This place was a ton better before it closed and got remodeled and came under new management but its still pretty rad. The beer is a good price and the food is amazing. The interior is cheezy but when ur drunk it doesn't really matter. The only thing that is weird is that they have a deck or patio for smoking but you cant take your beer out there. Even though a native of LB, and the fact that both my husband and I graduated from CSULB, neither of us had ever been to this famous landmark. Now that my old friend Tracy Johnston Kittinger owns it, we just had to stop in and visit her. We're so glad we did! I only drink DosXX Dark (last beer I had was 6 yrs. ago!) and my husband only drinks IPA. What a surprise that Tracy had both for us. Great job. We came with my dearest friend and had a wonderful time, very "Cheers" like. Janice and I gabbed away the night and caught up with Tracy, while our husbands played pool. We all had burgers, which were tasty and well-seasoned. Everyone here is very friendly and welcoming, every seat was taken, and all were having a raucous time. 49er Tavern is the new spot. Long forgotten but back with a new spirit. When I came in I was greeted by the bartender Christina. The place was medium to capacity. The clientele was friendly, had a few hellos after sitting down. Christina told me about the special, a pint and a cheese burger which I might say was rather delicious. If you have been here before in the past and had a lack luster experience I would encourage you to give it another try. New management, great beers and beautiful bartenders. read more

Went here early on a Friday night. The boyfriend wanted to watch the Lakers game, I wanted good food so I picked this place based upon other Yelp reviews which were pretty spot on. The burgers were GOOOOOOD! I got a 'Frisco and the BF got a Bacon Burger. The PBR was nice and cold and the service was excellent. Yes the old men have their little spot at the bar and are kind of territorial, but we weren't out to pick fights with old men so we had no problems. Best Burgers in Long Beach? ehh I dunno about that one. But is deff. one of the better bars that serve food. The burger was awesome I will admit, and the Giant PBR schooner for $3 for sure made my day that much better. They grill all their burgers in the back made to order and comes with a bag of chips and a pickle.. mmm pickles. Anyways it is deffintly one of those places that you have to go to in order to call yourself a local of LB. New owner is awful!!!! Don't be fooled by the good reviews based on the past greatness! We go to the 49er before a Long Beach State basketball game to grab a beer and some food. We heard there was a new owner, but figured it could not change that much. We have always loved this place for a beer and a burger. The owner introduces himself, and takes our order. He comes back with the beer and has short poured everyone's schooners by about 2 inches, then when you are ready for a new beer he fills up a plastic cup and dumps it into your warm schooner (again short poured.) I also noticed he has reduced his taps down from 8-10 to 4 and now empty spigots sit where specialty beer use to come out. The owner tries to make conversation and immediately starts badmouthing the previous owners about how he sued them and made them lose their house and such....sorry but keep your dirty laundry to yourself.....not the customers problem (not to mention not something to brag about!) Before there was a barrel of peanuts for customers to munch on. Now, he is charging 2 bucks for a tiny bag with about 5 peanuts in it. Signs say "Must charge for peanuts, due to previous embezzlement"...again keep the dirty laundry to yourself! Weird. So sad to see a great local establishment have such a moron run it into the ground. read more

I was In there last Saturday night and watched the new owner kick over a transvestite that was stripping near the juke box. It was totally awesome until the tranny got up and gave the owner a firece slap to the face! THis place was wild and fun! Damn good burgers! I mean -- I'm salivating just thinking about all that grilled, garlicy, worcestershire-y goodness! YUM! My husband always complains about their lack of french fries (his suggestion was for them to get one of those table top "air fryers") but personally, I don't care. I'm always so wrapped up in my burger that I'm FULL by the time I realize there's no fries. They have a fine selection of booze - no problems there. I've NEVER had bad service here -- some bars have bartenders that make you feel like you don't belong. But despite the rough appearance of this place, it's always very friendly here. My only complaint (and it's not enough to ding them on stars) is that when we went last time they had different buns on the burgers. They were more kaiser-roll-like & I prefered the old classic sesame bun they'd had before. I hope they switched back. Hmmmm maybe I'll eat here tomorrow.... read more

The Niner is back in business and as amazing as I remember it. I used to frequent the place at least once a week, and then after the ownership thing was saddened, but now it's back open and still amazing. I was scared for a short while that there weren't going to keep making burgers, but their back and as good as ever. Yes they're made on a hot plate, but they still taste amazing! Anyone who is talking negative about the niner is just an old timer (or close to being one) that loves to complain about "The Good Ol Days were better"... well news flash, the world is always changing, get with it and embrace it. The bartendars are as friendly as ever, the place doesn't smell funny, the prices are about the same, and the general bunch that frequent it are about the same as before. We love going here but only during the day when the employee care about their job and guest. Rick is wonderful but we went on a weekend when he was not there. We walked in and no one even realize we were there now if you ever been there they see you right when you walk in, there was two couple and the older man seem like he was so busy. We waited for him to say something to us but nothing so we decided to get up and go to the bar to order our beer. We order a large Coors lite and a IPA and he went and pour the C.Lite and came back and ask what did you order. Then my husband sat down I told him to stay there and get the beer. We were going to order lunch but since the two beers seems like to much for him we decided not to eat there, since we did not see another person there and DID NOT WANT HIM TO COOK THEM. There is a guy during the day during the week who makes the burgers awesome and really seems to care about what he is giving you, but when he is not there watch out, the other cook does not warm the bun, the burger comes out well done and burned not juicy, also he just throw together the lettuce and tomato it falls everywhere. Now just let me say we have been there alot of times and only during the day do they knowledge that you are there any other time they act like it is a bother that we came in. I wish they would work on their customer serves and we would go all the time. /since we live down the street. We will be back but just want to let you know. read more

Bar tender was very unfriendly, never smiled and never came back to see if we wanted another drink ever though I sat with an empty glass in front of me for at least 15 minutes. He did seem to be friendly to those he knew but I guess he doesn't feel they need any other regulars. We have been going here for burgers for quite a while now. We have been through several owners there as well. We have told MANY, MANY people to come here for the burgers...they always said "really?, the 49er?" The burgers used to be, bar none (no pun intended), the BEST burgers in Long Beach. Well, a slow decline has been happening over the past few months. The last burger we had there was the worst we have had. Nothing special about it any more. The service (blonde girl) was actually really bad. Couldn't get a refill or the tab. We have seen families with children there as well. The new owner (very nice and helpful) has made it child friendly. They even have root beer on tap! We are very disappointed about the steady decline in the burgers. Like I said, we told EVERYONE, all the time, to go there and get the burgers. My husband is headed there right now for one last try. Hopefully this post will make a turnaround to the days of old for that rockin burger. We will keep you posted..... read more
