Yes, it's a lot more cleaned up than the way it used to be, but they've done a nice job on sprucing up the joint. The beer was great for the price But the server only seemed interested in sitting down texting with her friends. We waited across the bar just staring at her to come over for a good 10mins. Until my boyfriend had to walk over to her to ASK her if we can get service for another beer. How ridiculous. Not only was she rude and uninterested but didnt even seem to care if we left a tip or not. Typically people would say "heres ur change have a nice day" No not here she just set the Change down on the counter and walked away to talk to her friends. So pathetic. Oh the Tavern how you hold a special place in my heart. The beer and burgers are just as good as it was when I used to go here every Thursday night during my undergrad at CSULB 12 years ago. You cant beat a pitcher of frosty Newcastle for $12. I like that the bathrooms are upgraded from the tiny space they used to be in. I do feel a little sad about the upgraded jukebox (call me nostalgic) but who cares when the beer is cheap and the burgers are fantastic. I also think the service is good and the staff are always friendly. I read some other reviews where people complained about the service and I completely disagree. Was going here for 3 years straight while i was a student at CSULB. I loved the staff, loved the bouncers. Unfortunately they do not have the old staff or bouncers anymore so if you are wild and crazy be careful. Over the years I have met and became friends with great people here, however, you also get some bad seeds here. I would say 85% of the time you will have a great experience. Now that the bouncers are gone I do not feel safe, anything can happen and some people are shady. Keep that in mind when you go here. All in all I think the owner has kept it great since she changed the management back but it doesn't feel the same. Iv seen some things go down here and now that the bouncers are gone, there isn't much the bartender can do to help you if you are in trouble. I love you guys but the security is needed. Also, this is the bar they filmed 'baseketball' at. Look up the bar scene. Love this place, just needs more security. Edit: going to add some more details: the new bartenders are great, the owner's family is great and i know them from over the years of stopping by, bathrooms are always clean, love the decorations, Wednesday is still trivia night (dont go unless you know 70's+ trivia). beer is always fresh, food is good (get the nachos ((amazing)) just be careful. read more

We're here from Salt Lake City, UT. We were looking for a cool, local place and found this joint. Drinks and food are great. Service is fantastic and has a great vibe. Love the multiple TV screens, creating an awesome sports bar. You can even smell your burger cooking out on the grill. Definitely a great stop and is highly recommended. read more

I believe the Best Burgers in Long Beach claim. I live in San Diego-- and yes, dare I say it, their burgers are better than Rocky's. My boyfriend and I make it a stop for all of our trips north-- don't expect ambiance, but their beer is a better selection than your average dive and their staff is really friendly. read more

I am a regular at this place and for good cause. It is definitely a neighborhood bar and if you go enough you will make friends that you will see time and time again. They recently raised their beer prices without any sign or warning and that kinda pissed me off, but the beer is still pretty damn cheap. Pool tournaments are held here but know that their are some pool sharks amongst the patrons, so beware before you throw your hat in the ring (it costs money.) Don't go here if you're expecting any sort of service. We stopped in hoping to get a drink while out running errands. Another patron generously offered to move over to allow my partner and I to sit together. We waited at the bar hoping to even be acknowledged by the bartender with no luck. He seemed very busy serving everyone but us. After waiting over 20 minutes the bartender approached the two gentleman who had JUST walked up to the bar. The 49'rs Tavern has a limited food menu, burgers and dogs cooked on a gas grill behind the bar. I had the Ortega Burger and it had just the right amount of heat. Burger came with an ortega chili, jalapenos, pepper jack cheese and a spicy mustard. I don't remember the taste of the mustard but overall a good tasting burger. Though i think the burger is some preformed partially cooked costco burger but was still tasty. Someone ordered dogs while I was there and they also looked just average. I didn't see it on their menu except there was a foot long dog also being served. Looked like one of those that came from Costco also. Overall experience, just average. But a good place to just hang with friends when you are not looking for the noise and bustle of bars on 2nd street. read more

It's just a normal beer bar with pool tables and lots of TV showing tons of shows at the same time. If you like sports, this is the bar for you. You can watch basketball and baseball and hockey and the News all at the same friggin time. The food was good but my boyfriend got heartburn from the chili dog. Very avarage. I think they had good amount of choice of beer but I don't like beer so I don't remember. I had buffalo wings. They were normal. Laid back dive bar. I'm visiting from out of state and needed a more laid back and cheaper (because let's be honest CA is expensive as hell) place to eat and have a drink. Found this place on here (yelp) and it was close so we decided to give it a try. First sight I loved it, because I was looking for a dive, not a dirty dive though. This place is clean. We ordered a couple beers and decided to try a burger. I asked what the best seller was and Lance, the bartender, suggested the 'God's Own'. It was a California burger with swiss cheese and a side of 1000 island dressing. That's what I settled on and let me tell you, it was nothing short of amazing! I ate every bite! I'm stuffed, but it was worth it. Also Lance, (the bartender) was so great!! Super friendly! Definitely an asset to the place. He made our night and experience that much better. P.s.
