This place is amazing because of the people and the atmosphere. My dad, brother and I came in from California to see a Brewers game and kind of stumbled into this place pre-game (and later followed it up with a post game brew). Adam, the bartender, is by far the most laid back yet attentive bartender I've ever met. Talk about a guy that makes you feel welcome! Horrible experience. I don't think I've ever left a restaurant where I, and everyone I was with, was so angry/disgusted. The "unique" way they do their food/ordering system is basically a scam. You look in a display case of food and order what you want. When we were doing this, my fiancee questioned the "waiter" about the prices. "It all depends on what you order," was his response. She pressed further and asked about a steak and potatoes- "$24," he said. So, we're all thinking that'll provide kind of a baseline, assuming steak is one of the most expensive options. Big mistake. We were horrified after we ate and were told what we owed- 1. A crab leg and side of brussel sprouts. The crab leg was apparently 1/2 lb. even though half of that was a giant knuckle which I/most don't eat. $36.00- $30 for the crab leg and $6 for the sprouts. 2. Chicken breast and a baked potato- $18. 3. Quinoa and mixed veggies- $18. 4. Bloodies- $12/each. Yes, the food was good. But that was the only redeeming part of the experience and is grossly overshadowed by how ripped off we felt. I've seen the managers responses to similar reviews... basically saying it's the customer's fault for not understanding their "unique" system. Standard victim blaming. Bad enough when people don't even know better than to ask considering they're in a dive bar and assume a decent priced or even average priced meal, but then there was us who actually questioned the pricing, etc. and weren't given a straight answer. A suggestion for the bar- if you want to do this concept of ordering, then you should have prices for each item listed so people can piece together a meal based on what they want to spend rather then arbitrarily making up prices after they have eaten. Kinda sad when you try to venture into a small, local business only to be screwed over. I'll stick to getting my 1.5lbs of King Crab legs from Wicked Hop for a CLEARLY ADVERTISED $20.00. read more

What a joke. No menu, no prices posted or listed any where. You have to walk to a glass case to select what you would like to eat. The meal was dripping in butter and over seasoned. Only after eating our meal, was i informed that my steak and side order of onion rings cost $74.00.and the funny thing is that a friend got the exact same meal and his bill came to $78.00. Love, love, love, love, love. Can you tell I am singing? I found the one place that I would place next to Christie's on the "Near and Dear to my Heart" restaurant list. I do not know many bars that have a display case showing their fresh produce and meats. I was blown away. You know exactly what you are getting here. There are so many wonderful menu options that I wished we were not going to the Brewers' game. I wanted to stay at 4th Base to eat. I had to dabble with the food. It was calling to me. We went with some cocktails--I, the ever fantastically brewed Lakefront IPA--and the homemade mozzarella sticks in chunky marinara. This is not your frozen variety in a pool of Ragu either. The stix had a thin batter that made for a good, crunchy exterior, and there was a rich [heavenly] dose of dense mozzarella inside. The marinara is made in-house, and tastes like the tomatoes came out of the garden, were seasoned and chopped, and tossed into the spiced sauce. D-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!!! Why do they not serve this version of mozzarella sticks at Summerfest and/or State Fair? Even if 4th base never makes it to the masses at the aforementioned food meccas, I will make this bar my home base any day. I will find a stool, happily whiling away the hours, sampling food and beer during many more visits to come. read more

This place is the best hidden gem in the Milwaukee area. Whether you want a superb burger or king crab or a big juicy steak, they have have it. And - they actually fix it the way you want it And you can pick what you want to go with it whether it's fresh veggies or whatever. We had King crab, we had bacon wrapped shrimp as appetizers which were the best I have ever had!!! We had garlic buttered grilled asparagus and broccoli. They gave us a plate of homemade onion straws which were just perfect!! I can't say enough good about this place. And - they also have omelets for breakfast that are just out of this world. Eat here now. Yes it's expensive. Yes it's a dive bar. The two mixed together are so much fun! We had food that was comparable to any fine dining restaurant I have ever been too! Plan ahead though there is no menu so come prepared with a cool dish in your head and they will prepare it. I recommend the bacon wrapped blue cheese stuffed tenderloin. Yup you heard me bacon-blue cheese-steak. Ahhhmazing. Can't wait to go again with friends! We weren't looking for the Sunday morning after church omelet place that everyone goes to. I'm happy to say I was not disappointed with our visit, food or service. My Bloody Mary was probably the best I have ever had. Our breakfast portions were enough to feed an army and the service was awesome. CJ the owner stopped by several times to make sure we were ok and had everything we needed and the bartender made sure our glasses were always full. Whoever is behind the food counter looked like an old burnt out alcoholic who mistreated us as only customers - as if we could not afford to eat there. Ok for pre game drinks and a burger but for what they charge for food from the counter would expect nicer treatment first of all, if unable to use chip credit card let customers know before ordering and also not treat customers rudely. If that was the owner behind the food counter - he needs to remember one thing, customer service and satisfaction and not to be rude no matter. Would not recommend to anyone not into high priced foods at a typical Milwaukee bar. It is not a 5 star restaurant and no 5 star restaurant would be so rude to customers. read more

I went here last night for the first time. I only chose this place at first because my friend wanted to meet somewhere on National Avenue. I looked up places to eat nearby and I saw this one came up with a menu containing a large Seafood selection. It was a bit confusing because I knew this was a bar, but I was not expecting to see what I saw on the menu. Anyway I walked in... saw sports memorabilia all over the place, Dean Martin music playing, and I got to choose fresh steaks or seafood like I was at a sushi joint. It was so weird.. it's cool. They don't have menus, more like ideas of how you would like your food prepared. Just like in a high-class restaurant, the prices match the freshness...but the experience is worth the bill. Two customers at the bar that night greeted us, told us that "this place is awesome" and went about their way. We were also greeted by the bartender and the chefs ( No, not Cooks, like in a real bar with bar food, but chefs in their cap and gown.) Whenever our family comes into town, they always love going out for steak. Since we were going to the Billy Joel concert, we thought this would be the perfect place to go. We were right! They were blasting Billy Joel songs to get everyone there pumped for the show. The entire staff was running their tails off, weaving between people all night long, and providing exceptional service. They have no menu. The food was good. But super overpriced. I ordered 12 wings and a basket of fries. That is $26 right there. $8 for each shrimp. $4 for every mozzarella stick. We stopped in this past Saturday, the 29th, for a couple of burgers and a beer. Our server, Jennifer was awesome to say the least. Our first time to eat in the bar area and were told to tell the chef what we wanted since there are no menus. My wife and I ordered the same, bacon cheeseburgers and fries. The burgers were perfectly done, the fries were scrumptious, and the Miller was nice and cold. Jennifer had stopped by several times asking if we needed anything. All was great. Then we got the bill, it was $50 for the -2- burgers, fries, -3- beers and a coke. A bit surprised, burgers were great, but not $50 great. Recommend. In Milwaukee for a few days and went here based on a tip from friends in our neighborhood (in Georgia!). Glad we did. It's like fine dining in a bar basically. Wear what you want, watch a game, drink a beer, and order what you want - like whatever you want. You look in a big case and pick what you want, have it cooked however you want, in any qty you want. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and ended up at 4th base. We had some time to kill between our brewery tour and the start of the Brewers/Marlins game. While at 4th base my wife ordered a filet cooked to her discretion/perfection. I got the Walleye with a cognac sauce that was outstanding! Broccoli with bacon for me and my wife had some very delicious fries as our sides. A guy at the bar over heard that it was our anniversary and bought us a shot. We got to talking and ended up walking to the game with him since he was going to the game too. I chose 4th Base because I'd read how great the food was, and as a single diner, I thought it'd be a fun place to watch and/or interact with people prior to a Brewers game. The bartender was very welcoming and engaging. We chatted about beer and he explained the premise of the restaurant, - no menus, choose your protein from the case to be prepared as requested. I expressed interest in the tuna and salmon and I inquired about a recommendation for preparation and took his suggestion. The salmon was blackened and topped with BBQ sauce and served with rice pilaf. The rice was nothing special and tasted much like something I'd make from a box at home, the fish was adequate. In hindsight, I should've ordered the fish prepared simply, so I suppose that's on me. It's not that the food is bad, just that it feels overpriced by about 30% for the quality. I spent a similar amount of $ at the Noble recently it was incredibly delicious! Sure did like the ambiance, and I may go back for drinks. If you're planning to eat there make sure you ask for pricing in advance - I felt ripped off. read more

I was there for the first time this past weekend. The atmosphere is very casual but the food and drinks are exceptional. I had one of the best Bloody Marys ever, followed by a 16 ounce beer chaser of my choice. The food situation is different- no menu. You go to the deli counter and pick what you want to eat. There is steak, lobster, scallops, pork and fresh vegetables. Your food is custom ordered and it was fantastic. To top it all off, they play great music. My husband and I were very disappointed when we went there tonight. No menus; just specials on a chalkboard. He ordered pork bolonaise and chili. The waitress came back over 10 minutes later and told him there was no chili tonight even thou it was on the specials board. When are meals came out the waitress told my husband the cook made a Sicilian pork chop instead for him. Didn't even ask if it was ok. Both our pastas were undercooked! I have to say I have been to the bar many of times. The staff there are awesome. I love to see CJ the owner, Jamie, and Patrick who are bartenders. Marco and Brian are awesome cooks any questions you have they have no problems explaining it to you. It is a different kind of bar there might be no menus but that's how you make it your own. The food is amazing I have had so many different types of meals and I have never been let down not once. I love the atmosphere there it's like cheers. To me it's very homey and being from buffalo I love the fact that my teams helmet is right in there. Some people say oh its a dive bar I don't think so it is what you make it and things aren't always what they seem. 4th base has great food and great people and every time I go I am never disappointed and I always have a blast. We paid 119.00+tip for 4 Bloody Mary's and 2 Cajun seafood omelets, with hash browns and sausage (kielbasa sliced on the diagonal). I should have known when there wasn't a menu that it would be ridiculously overpriced. Food was good, service was friendly. * *After reading the response from CJ, he is right, I should have commented on their prices while there, but we were kind of sticker shocked. We did each have a Bloody Mary with a full chaser, but most places don't charge for the chaser or if they do, they tell you. When we ordered the Bloody Mary's the bartender just enthusiastically said, "you get a full size chaser with that". The four of us did share two sea food omelets, but most places do tell you when there is a splitting charge. But all of this goes along with the no menu approach, it gives the establishment wide latitude on charging.... for example our party was the only one in 4th Base the entire time we were there, I get it, you need to make money to stay open. So if you look at it like he does the four of us were out we each had two drinks and good food, we enjoyed the place, $30+tip a person. We didn't have a lot of food, that omelet was of regular size. Just depends on how you look a things, I apologize for not questioning the prices while there and for that I'll give it another star. read more
