We originally was just going to have drinks. We saw all the delicious looking food around and couldn't resist. We were told that they would make anything we wanted. I check the area around the hotel, well holy crap if that establishment my overly nourished friend spoke of is only a short walk away. Hmmmm. In town to see baseball, cardinal nation travels well. Can we fit a stop in? I must...I mean those 3' scallops, right? Sundays game is early, gotta eat so here we are. Now the review. Geez, im a wordsmith i cant help it. Visiting from Los Angeles, CA we didn't know where to eat or what places were good. So we yelped and came across 4th Base after a Brewers game. Right off the bat, Sammy, the bar tender and Marco, the chef were GREAT! This place was very welcoming, the steaks were delicious and tender, the gelato was scrumptious, the beer selections was awesome, and the interior was fun to look at. This is a place that I would love to come back and visit again! BOTTOM LINE: do not pass up this place! read more

I ate here 4 of those days. This place is unique. They have a case with food in it, steak, shrimp, oysters, pork, chicken, veggies. They say pick what you want out the case and we will make it. I pause with a look of WTF...then I ask again what do I do? They say pick what you want out the case and we will do it. I'm like totally confused. I said eff it let's order. Two days I got NY Strip and Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Shrimp with Broccoli Other day I got Ribeye, Bacon Wrapped Stuff Shrimp and Stir Fry Veggies Last day I got BBQ Pork Chop, stuffed oysters and spinach I'm in love with this place. If you don't stop in you'll regret it. The atmosphere is classic wi grub bar with that comfortable friendly feel and the food is five star quality. It's like dive bar meets Michelin quality. The bacon wrapped scallops were perfectly cooked tender, huge, and juicy yet the bacon was crisp and flavorful. Try the shrimp they are cooked to the perfect temp. The steaks and crab look great in the glass and can't wait to come back n try them. The staff is friendly and attentive. Fantastic food!! Sports Bar Ambiance..friendly staff. We enjoyed the "if we have it, we'll make it" concept. Drinks were ok. Server suggested, based on what we like..fruity? Fizzy? Vodka? Whiskey? Etc. The concoction was good, but a bit weak. Prices-- the bill was higher than expected, until we considered the top notch fare. We couldn't stop talking about how good it was. My hubs claims he had just eaten "the best Parmesan garlic wings and breaded mushrooms of his life". In hindsight, when you order food at a Sports Bar, you have an expectation about the cost. Then you're served. You're blown away by the level of flavor and satisfaction.. Then your bill comes and and you can easily justify it with how good the food was and how full you are. Ughhhhhh....hate writing reviews that are not complimentary, but I hope this may help an owner/manager. Just moved to MKW and read good reviews about 4th base. When we sat down, the staff immediately apologized that the kitchen was understaffed due to the Brewers game. My wife, mother in law and I split one app and 3 meals. (Chicken fingers/fries for our 3 yr.old) Pros: Great Jalapeño poppers, great scallops, decent filet and amazing staff and decor Cons: Cold rice with scallops, shrimp linguine dish was very bland, literally inedible brussel sprouts with the filet (maybe frozen, shame because all of the great things restaurants are doing with them), $170 price tag/with 3 beers and 2 glasses of wine. Really hope it was just a bad night, but for the price all of it should always be spot on. read more

Not sure what I was expecting when my friend chose this place. I tried my best to find another establishment to eat at as it was my last day in Milwaukee but she insisted. Love the dive bar feel of the place and the sports memorabilia lined this place to the theme it held. Down to earth establishment, decor, clientele, service. Right away, we were approached and explained how the food worked here. No menus? What? Look at what fresh ingredients they have and make your own wish come true!? What a twist! I had pasta with garlic butter, steak, and steamed broccoli all cooked to perfection and just amazing! I wish there were better words as none of these could describe the decadent perfection of how they were cooked, prepared, flavored, and created. The service made us feel at home instantly with her warm demeanor and friendly attitude. Very knowledgeable on foods and how they could be prepared to make every bite enjoyable. What can I say? This is an updated review. Stopped here for brunch. Wow! What a treat! Fantastic food! I had the Crab Benedict and my friend the Chicken and Kielbasa skillet. We were both impressed! Perhaps the last time I was there, I should've mentioned I wasn't crazy about salt. This time we both mentioned "light on the salt" when we ordered, and everything was perfect. Cinnamon raisin toast came with our meals. Asparagus perfectly done garnished my entree. My hash browns had great flavor and were crisp, yet moist. The dining experience was superb. The server was friendly and attentive. The entire staff was great. I'm going to introduce a friend whose favorite meal is brunch to this place in a few weeks. The prices are not quite as high as the place on the lake, and it doesn't have its view, but parking's free, and the food is great in a much friendlier, relaxed atmosphere. We started visiting this place when it was still in Pigsville. We followed it to National Ave. and forgot about it after I left the neighborhood. Based on my latest experience, I'll visit at least a few times a year for the friendly service, great food in a relaxed atmosphere, and to catch up on the latest additions of sports memorabilia. Oh, and to listen to the great tunes played over the muted TVs showing various sports. And no matter how great the food and drink, the only way this place has a chance of getting 5 stars from me is if they have a menu which lists prices. That is the only consistent gripe I hear about this place. I have read a lot of reviews concerning no set prices, you are paying for quality and fresh food and it's not like they give you paper napkins, they give you cloth napkins, I work part time for a dry cleaners in my hometown and we furnish lines to a lot of local restaurants and bars and they are not cheap by any means. Don't let this steer you away from visiing 4th base bar, you want quality food in a great atmosphere and this is exactly what you get... it was the night before the brewers opening day 3-27-2019 when I visited 4th base bar, there a few people in there, I was greeted warmly by I think the bartenders name was mirage? I told her I was from out of town, and like to try local craft beer from the area I'm visiting she recommended lakefront brewery's river west stein and it's an amber lager and of course I had to mark out, and have a miller lite at the bar like they did when filming major league in 1988. after I ordered my food which I'm a wing person I saw a gentleman over talking to a lady I asked are you cj he replied yes he was, I said I had seen the tv spot about major league and 4th base bar, he told me how he prepares their wings I said that was fine I usually like mine tossed in sauce, which he offered to do, but I wanted them in his establishments purest form, I'm glad I didn't get them tossed in sauce, he uses a Cajun dry rub which is not to over powering and the had a nice crisp taste to them, I had already eaten a few hours earlier but I finishes off the rest of the wings that night at my hotel, cj and mirage and everyone else in 4th base made an outsider from west virgina feel at home, I loved the fact that it's a family business which cj's dad started 42 years ago, it is covered in sports memorabilia, I loved that place, don't let the no prices or set menu full you if they have the ingredients and food they will make what you want, whenever I come back to Milwaukee I will be back at 4th base, when you are in Milwaukee you should check it out also! read more

I have been on a search for a "hidden gem" type restaurant for months now. I wanted great food, but didn't want you typical Wards, carnevor or Mr B's. Those places are great, but I wanted the unexpected type meal, a place you would never expect and that is exactly what we got. When we walked in I had to ask the waitress if we were at 4th Base because I heard it was a restaurant, but my wife, daughter and I walked into a bar? The waitress promptly said, do you want to sit in the dining room and we're lead to a super cool sports type room with a steak house feel. After telling our waitress, who was awesome by the way, we had not been the before she explained how it worked, there were no menus, we talk directly to the chef and he will make us exactly what we want. We were then lead to the steak and seafood display where we spoke to the chef and decided on our dinner, he also told us some prices as we had our 13 year old daughter and he said I don't want you to pay too much for her meal. My wife mentioned she wanted a brussel sprout au'gratin if that was possible and without breadcrumbs due to a no carb diet, he said don't worry, I understand. Our drinks were amazing, my wife said her margaritas were better than she has had in any Mexican restaurant and my gimlet was strong and smooth. My daughter had the moz sticks and said they were tied with her favorite ever (she gets them everywhere). When our food came out, I was very impressed with the presentation and more so the flavor. With our carb free diet the chef prepared my scallops with the most flavorful zucchini noodles with shaved carrots and delivered my wife's brussel sprouts au'gratin with fresh made parmesan chips instead of breadcrumbs (seriously? Very impressed at the thoughtfulness). Truthfully, the scallops were hands down the best I have ever had, Mr B's originally had my vote for the best. The chef actually came out to our table before he actually cooked our food and again during our meal to check in! Lastly, he came out at the end and lifted our to go box and said, I just want to see how I did, haha. It was a bit pricey, but if I would have been at carnevor, the food maybe would have been the same, but I wouldn't have thought it was pricey. So enjoy the atmosphere for what it is and enjoy the food even more. Don't expect classy, just expect to be suprised, we'll be back for sure. read more

When your building/restaurant is a dive bar, you cannot serve gourmet food without any indication of price. We had no idea that two steaks, Brussel sprouts, a mushroom cap and a side salad would be $171. Another $12 for an Old Fashioned. The glasses of water were free... I think. There was a guy at the bar and one other table while we were there. We were the only people eating a full dinner. At $183 it makes sense! The food was excellent. However, If we wanted to spend a few hours savoring a nice expensive meal, we would plan for it, expect some wine, nice music, a TABLECLOTH, etc. You are NOT Chicago Cut Steakhouse. Yet your prices are right there with them. $65 per steak? Wow. (Their bone in ribeye is $69) On Yelp, Chicago Cut is listed as $$$$.4th base $$ Very misleading! Walking across your bar to choose a meal to be prepared and charging premium for the experience is like me going to a Walk In Nail Salon, being offered a facial and then being charged $200 for it because the Koehler Spa charges $215 for their facial and spa experience. Lesson learned ... shared this story verbatim with quite a few people tonight and their reaction was incredulous. read more

I really want to give this place five stars! I had one of the best steaks and fries ever here today! It was amazing! However, if it's your first time here don't count on a menu. I sat at the bar. I asked the bartender for a menu and he pointed and grunted towards the deli case. I was taken aback by his not so friendly demeanor. Ohhhhhhkkkkkk. I went to the Deli case. Stuff in the deli case looked amazing! Huge steaks! Fish and lobster options! I saw a server and said hey can you help me figure out what to order? I said the steaks look good in the deli case. She said absolutely. I can help. I said even if I'm sitting at the bar? She said yes. She came over after a few minutes and suggested the filet loaded with peppers, onions and mushrooms. I also wanted fries and she mentioned they are excellent. They are sprinkled with Parmesan. My friend ordered three shrimp in a cocktail sauce. You have to tell them how many shrimp you want. The food was absolute heaven. However the bill was $35 for the fillet $8 for the fries. $18 for three huge shrimp with cocktail sauce. Plus a beer, a white claw, and a couple diet cokes. $84 was the total for two people with one person just having a shrimp cocktail. This is fine dining prices for Milwaukee in a very down and dirty quirky sports bar and the food was definitely incredible. It's just when your spending that kind of money. I would want the surly bartender to be a little more polite and offer suggestions since I have no idea what they have to offer food wise. I had to look around and ask fellow customers what they ordered to figure out what I wanted since bartender refused to help. I also saw salads and a lot of bacon wrapped shrimp when I was looking and walking around. Next time I will go to a table and get a server since they are more helpful with the newbies. The food? Damm so good! I am cool with no menu bartender dude! But then be a little nicer to the newbies and give us the scoop about your quirky joint. Offer suggestions! Help us out! Husband and I stopped by here while passing thru milwaukee, thought it was going to be a TOTAL dive bar with cheap drinks and even cheaper greasy food....Boy was I wrong!! This place is awesome, food is phenomenal! The chef said pick a meat and I'll cook how you like, I was kinda skeptical about the scallops but they were soooooo delicious, big guys not the skimpy wimpy little things, and cooked perfectly! This may be my favorite place in Milwaukee after just 1 trip. 4th Base was recommended to me by a coworker who said it is his favorite place to go in Milwaukee. We had a group of 25 people that were going to come in for drinks and dinner so we called ahead. The bartender who answered the phone was super excited. I guess this place isn't very busy when the Brewers aren't in town. We get in a little after 6 oclock on a Saturday. There is a table of 4 and the rest of the place is dead. To say this place is a dive is an understatement. It is a whole in the wall filled with sports memorabilia, great craft beers, and the most delicious food ever. Everyone jumps right in like we have all been there before, but we have no idea what we are doing. "Can I have a menu?" I heard someone ask... it was met with a moment of silence then the bartender said we have a cooler over there. It is your menu, and there is a chalkboard with some specials on it. I walked to the cooler, and the light was like the end of pulp fiction when they open the briefcase, but this time you get to actually see whats in the case. I didn't know where to start I was totally overwhelmed. Bacon wrapped scallops, filet, salmon, tuna, biggest jumbo shrimp I have ever seen (oh they have them wrapped in bacon too), even bigger crab legs, and an array of fresh vegetables. I had to have a beer just to get my head straight. Luckily for me this allowed some other people to begin ordering. I tried turkey meatballs (terrific with just the right amount of seasoning and spice), blackened salmon (a little peppery for my taste but still delicious), italian sausage (pretty good), onion straws (delicious), brussel sprouts (unbelievably fresh), filet (always great), and scallops (my favorite). I finally ordered... can I get 3 no wait 4 bacon wrapped scallops with a side of rice, a bowl of steak chili, and a ribeye sandwich for my buddy. $75... While a little expensive, the food was definitely worth it. I could barely finish the scallops and only had 2 or 3 bites of the rice. Same with the chili. My buddy finished the ribeye sandwich before I even had the chance to see it, so I guess it was good. We had a great time, and I think the bartenders/servers did too. We ate here today for the first time. It was early evening on a Monday and the place was completely dead. First off, I like the idea that you can order pretty much whatever you want because the kitchen if flexible but I think they failed terribly in delivering on everything we ordered. There are no prices for anything. You have no idea what it will cost and they pretty much size you up depending on how your dressed (this became apparent as the waiter was asking what we did for a living). We opted to do what they described as a "Tasting Menu" type of dinner (we thought it would be sort of like Tapas fashion as it was described as small plates of different chef choices). The waiter mentioned that we could try 6 or 7 things and get a real feel for the food, the menu and what the chef had up his sleeve. Well, we only had 3 things and had to exchange one of them because it was brought out raw and cold. Although it was promptly replaced by another dish of our choice, I am really glad we didn't have the mentioed 6-7 small plates. For 3 shared plates and 3 mix drinks (total) our bill was $100. Had we had 6-7, we would have had a $300 bill. The food was not impressive at all. I have the benefit of travelling for work very frequently so I do get spoiled with trying new great restaurants around the world but $100 for food served in a grubby baseball bar is insane. The Cajun shrimp were terrible and overcooked, the Seafood pasta was good but the Salmon was overcooked. The Bacon Wrapped Scallops were good and I would have them again, less the lumpy alfredo sauce and pasta they were served with. Most everything that we saw come out of the kitchen was heavy on Pasta which is a Cop-Out at the prices they are charging. I would recommend going to a more formal place if you want good seafood and better service and aren't into getting Sticker Shock at the end. I don't mind spending money and often times spend in upwards of 100 per person with (with wine) for a nice dinner but $115 with tip for something that was never described to you is a complete and total rip off. Major fail on their part. FYI (as I have heard the prices always change) Scallops wrapped in bacon $12 Small bowl of Pasta with lumpy Alfredo - $7 Small bowl of Pasta with overcooked Salmon - $22 4 Shrimp in a described Cajun sauce $18 Had there not been tomatoes in the red sauce on the salmon the only vegetable we would have had were the limes and cherries in our drink.... Don't waste your time or money. Support a restaurant that has their act together. I know numerous restaurants in town that are willing to whip up something if it's not on the menu. This place is not special for that..... Lastly, I ordered an Old Fashioned and it was $10. Even downtown you don't pay $10. The food is excellent. Period. Some of the best food in memory. Don't approach the Fourth Base like normal business. Expect to spend some hard-earned money here. If you have to ask, you can't afford it. Really. They don't specify prices, and the bill isn't itemized. That's the way it rolls, so expect and accept the situation or don't go. And it's expensive. There is no menu. Order what you want from a list of available ingredients. Order what you want and how you want it. The chef will make it all, just for you, exactly how you like it. Horrible people total scam artists! Stay clear from this place, a dive bar that charges $18 for a steak sandwich that was anything but good. Basically ton of onions, mushrooms and a tiny piece of steak cooked in gravy master on a huge roll, and yes it cost me $18. By first impression, Fourth Base looks the same as just about any other small bar in the Milwaukee area... but then if you wander back behind the bar, a secret treasure trove of meats and veggies sits in a glass case, waiting for you to make your selection. What's good? Well, there is no menu... you literally point at things and tell the chef how you want it made. For instance: "Give me three of those baseball-sized scallops... and wrap them in bacon." A little while later, you get three hot and buttery bacon-wrapped scallops. The same theory applies to anything from fillet to lobster to salmon to broccoli. You want a portabella mushroom? Stuffed with veggies? No, stuffed with cheese? Whatever you want. You literally create your own menu items as you go. They'll do it entrée style, or you can get it appetizer style to share with a group (I think this is best). It's a somewhat bizarre experience, but I found it to be fun. While waiting for the rest of our food, we were brought some AMAZING bread (I hate to say it, but the best thing we had that night?), and were tended to attentively by Coleen, the bartender. All of the staff was friendly, and my guests and I had a great time. They were from out of town, so we asked if we could buy pint glasses. We were told we could, so they decided to get two. For no stated reason, they said they'd give us a third for free. Sweet! The only damper on the experience was getting the bill... we had tried a handful of dishes, had a number of drinks, and bought souvenirs. After tip, we got out at almost exactly $300. Ouch. Most people would murder the review for that... Instant 1-star. That is extremely expensive for this "class" of establishment. You could easily pop into Eddie Martini's and spend less... but you probably wouldn't have the same experience. Fourth Base isn't a high-end establishment, but it does provide a unique experience that (at least from what I've seen so far of this city) is unmatched in style. It's weird, it's informal, and it's FUN. And, the quality of the food was excellent. For the experience it provided, I can't give this any less than a 4-star review. I might not visit often, if ever again, but I in no way regret the experience. It was well worth it. read more

Certainly a novelty that you can go to a bar and order essentially whatever you are hungry for... What isn't novel is the fact that there is no pricing or a menu to order off of...so imagine your surprise when you get the lunch check for a steak sandwich and discover that its $30...YIKES. Yes, it was good, but for that price I could have been enjoying a lunch at Eddie Martinis and not having to deal with a dingy smoky bar. read more

So my last review was a tip, but I've been to this place multiple times and this place deserves way way way more than just a tip. Great place with great history be a great atmosphere. You don't have to be a drinker to go here and that's what I love about this place. The ambiance is fantastic and it has a small town feel with very friendly people and just all around goodness. I have recommended other places, and as you know from my recommendations, I place service at a premium and this place is literally the best service ever. So sure you may have to pay an extra $1 for the same item next door or down the street but there is no better atmosphere that 4th base. Next time you are in town and don't visit. Happened onto this place after reading the reviews. Fresh cooked food after you chose what you want from the ingredients in a cooler!! Great taste! Able to accommodate special dietary needs! Fun place, but it is expensive. Very generous drinks. We sat at the bar and had a great time before a recent Brewers game. Crab legs and bacon wrapped scallops were expertly prepared. Will come back again next time I'm in town. read more

I've been meaning to post a review on here for awhile. My wife and I and another couple went to 4th Base for NYE. Just like everyone else says we were a tad taken back by the prices because we didn't ask and went in blindly. After receiving the bill the four of us discussed the bill and came to the conclusion that we had one of the better unique and fun dinning experiences and we quickly did the math to justify what we had just spent and guess what I think the pricing was just right. First off I want to say that I had been in the bar before but it was just for a drink before a game and did not eat there before so I knew what to expect when walking in. An old school sports bar with memorabilia EVERYWHERE! The other couple we went with were giving the look of "what the hell?" Haha. Right away we were greeted by everyone the waitress, bartender and chefs. A+ Right away that feeling of this is a laid back place set in. Drinks made right away. We then sit down at the table and right off the bat our waitress explains how the ordering process works and takes us to the case. She did tell us that the prices were listed and if we wanted to know what they were to just ask. We didn't want to waste time asking once the chef started to explain what was in the case and how they could prepare it for us. Then we got to pick out appetizers to share. No need to order a specific amount. I got the ribeye (medium) and it was perfect. Great flavor, tender. I got the mushrooms with the steak and they were great too. My wife picked out a couple bacon wrapped scallops and some shrimp. We shared a side of asparagus which may have been the best asparagus I have ever had at a restaurant (no exaggerating). If you compare this restaurant to other restaurants with this quality of food you will find that your pricing will be in the same ballpark with anyone. The fact that you get to see everything before it is made and get to speak with the chef is something that not too many places will offer. I truly think that people have an issue because of the atmosphere of the restaurant. It's more of a sports bar so they expect Champps pricing. Sorry but this food is in a whole other spectrum than Champps. I personally love the atmosphere because I just do not like to dress up so this is a perfect restaraunt for me. With all this said my wife and I have been back twice since NYE. Once for my parents birthdays and once for her birthday. We have been just as happy all three times. Five Stars will remain unless I have a bad experience which I do not foresee happening here. read more
