I use to love the food. I don't think the cooks are on point. Today I had the avocado toast with bacon and a sunny side up egg. The toast one burnt on one side, the bacon was delicious, the egg was way over cooked from sunny side to a fried egg. The avocado was okay. It was at the point of not quite ripe to ripe so was hard in the middle. I didn't eat much of the avocado. I haven't been here in months because of the inconsistency with the food. And now I don't think I'll be back in a while as well. Things have not changed in the kitchen. Ambience is nice. read more

There's something wrong with their reservation system here and they are understaffed. I wasn't planning on leaving a negative review until I received the same bad experience again. Food is pretty good and prices are decent. I come here because they are dog friendly. However, getting a seat is a different story. I can't recall which occasion it was for but I made reservations for something like Father's Day on Open Table a few months back. Upon arriving for my reservation, the restaurant was closed. It was listed as opened online and they even allowed me to make reservations. Being that it was a holiday, I couldn't go anywhere else without an extreme wait time. Yesterday, I had planned a lunch with family here. I had made reservations and upon arriving, the hostess told me that they weren't honoring any reservations during the weekends. What?! How can you not honor reservations? I've never heard of such a thing. Unprofessional. If they don't want to honor reservations, they need to stop taking reservations on Open Table. read more

I came here expecting a simple hot coffee, but unfortunately my experience was very disappointing. Mackenzie helped me with my order, but she made me an cold coffee that didn't taste good, even though I asked for a hot coffee. When I went back to ask why it was cold, she apologized and told me the hot coffee machine was broken. A few minutes later, she spoke with her manager and told him that I wanted a refund because I didn't like the taste of the coffee. That wasn't true. My issue was that I ordered a hot coffee and was served a cold one. When I explained the situation to the manager, it turned out the coffee machine wasn't broken at all. That made the whole experience even more frustrating because I felt I wasn't being given an honest explanation. Mistakes happen, but being given inconsistent information and having my concern misrepresented made this a very disappointing visit. read more

I ordered the wedge salad and it came with crispy bacon and really creamy dressing. It was an A+. I also had to get a side of the shoe string fries and they were perfect. I loved the ranch dressing for dipping! Also, they have a really yummy tropical iced tea that was perfect on a warm day. There were so many great items on the menu. My first time dining in at 59th & Lex Cafe located inside Bloomingdale's. After some shopping, I decided to grab lunch. My stomach was growling. Needed some nutrients in my body. Restaurant looked appealing, therefore gave it a try. I'm always walking past it every time visiting Newport Fashion Island curious if it's good or not. Service wasn't the best as I walked in. Barely any greeting with no attentive of me strolling in. I took the initiative acknowledging the staff first. Totally opposite, but had to be kind so I can get seated. Bri was my server who took care of me. So service improved. I ordered the Ribeye steak sandwich with house salad on the side. Sandwich was just a little dry with no sauce. I kindly asked for some truffle garlic sauce to be added. Boom! Made the sandwich exploded in my mouth! It was that good! Couldn't finish it all, so I saved the other half for dinner. After my meal, had to wash it down with an espresso martini. Not the best, but I had better. Overall, my experience went well and I will continue to visit. read more

Surprising little find inside a Bloomingdale's. Definitely thought that this would be a mall trap, but actually shaped up to be one of the better eateries at Fashion Island. Good food options. Decent portion size. Great for kids. Priced fairly. No wait or crowd on a Saturday lunchtime. I would recommend sitting in the patio area if you can. The space inside feels a little cramp, more like a cozy cafe. Servers were really friendly. Many of the other customers were regulars. read more

Maybe the great food and service last times was a fluke. Today'a service was absolutely horrible - the worst I have had in years. The burger came out VERY pink when ordered medium well. All the food was bland. I could have ignored that but the service wow. He took the order, never came back until food was ready (which took a while). We had to get bread from someone else's server. The host brought us drinks. It wasn't even busy but our server just disappeared. Finally brought us food, and never saw him again for probably 30-45 minutes. I had to ask someone else for refils and the check. The host let me know he asked the server for the check twice now and so finally I went inside and jokingly said if I can't pay in 5 minutes I'm going to leave because I'm done begging to pay lol. I told them about our experience. They laughed with me and a girl printed our ticket and let me pay. She was very friendly and attentive to her tables near us. I asked for a manager and they said there wasn't one in today he called out. I would like a refund but nobody was there to authorize anything or even help out. That was also crazy to me. For my final lunch of Restaurant Week 2023, I decided to go to Fashion Island. It worked out since there were also some other things going on at the mall during that day, so this was a convenient spot. Sadly, the food did not quite live up to my expectations, especially considering this was in Bloomingdales. For $25 you got to pick one appetizer and one entree. One nice thing I will say is that the meal came with complimentary bread and this was the only place (besides chips at a Mexican restaurant) that gave me free bread, so that was a nice surprise. Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus with Caper Remoulade - This sounded good in concept, but the execution is a different story. To my knowledge, I have never had a remoulade sauce before, but from a search, it is usually a bit more orange in color. What I got instead was a very white sauce that tasted like ranch. And I don't mind ranch, but there was so much that it was overwhelming and I tried my best to avoid it. The asparagus and prosciutto were okay, but not too flavorful. Salmon Scampi - All of the entrees I got to choose from sounded really good, but I chose the salmon since I had not had salmon all week and it is my favorite fish. And overall, I did like this dish, but it definitely felt like a step down compared to everything else I had been eating this week. The mushrooms were a bit slimy for my liking, but I enjoyed the mashed potatoes and fish. While I might not be going back, the service at this place was excellent and they were very attentive. As a side I took the ceasar's salad which had too much dressing. The goat cheese salad was very good too albeit a little small. I met up with an old high school buddy of mine to catch up and since it was a nice sunny weekday I decided this place would be perfect on a mild winter day. The weather was nice however the service left something to be desired. Our server was nice but seemed forgetful and possibly too overwhelmed...maybe. The place is not huge but it was full of patrons. I got the tuna sandwich along with their steak fries and a latte (side note: server forgot about my latte and I was able to finally get it after 45 min) - all pretty good (7.5/10)- and my friend got their steak, medium rare, but it came out way more rare. He attempted for quite some time to send it back but we could not find our server. We did end up asking another server who said he would get our guy but that took another 10-15 minutes. Luckily we weren't in a rush so we just caught up, talked about our respective lives and businesses in a fairly nice atmosphere. Oh, I forgot to mention that I ordered a side of ranch dressing for my fries that never showed up either. I would give this restaurant another chance but I'm not in any rush to go back as well. Had another amazing lunch here at 59th and Lex Cafe! Love their wide selection of foods to choose from. Very healthy choices and generous portions. I got the Salmon Honey Walnut and Veggie special. It was amazing! Great taste, clean, fresh and perfect portion size. Also got the Tuna Sandwich on Sour Dough for a later meal. Also great sandwich that went perfect with my side Cesar Salad. There are so many great choices here I always have a hard time deciding what to get. This place has great food and service. Derrick gave me excellent service and was very knowledgeable of the menu. This is the MOST friendly and especially DOG friendly restaurant that exists. Not only did MOST the staff come say hello to me and my animal, their service is a cut above the rest of the fashion island restaurants. I'm a regular here, and 99.9% of the time the people who complain are just Ass hole, who will complain about anything. TRUTH. This is Newport Beach after all.
