I'd tried the Brooklyn location of 5ive spice for delivery once, and had such a good impression of their pho that I recommended their new Nolita version for a weeknight dinner catch up with a friend. They don't take reservations, so we showed up at 6:30 on a Thursday night without one. We were able to be seated at one of their outdoor tables immediately. My friend and I ordered the green mango salad to share and both had different variations of the bun for our mains. The food was presented not long after ordering, and everything was fresh and delicious. I liked that they had a low carb option for the bun, allowing me to have it with just salad. I visited this place on a Wednesday night and was promptly seated by our waiter, Alex. He was very attentive and visited often to refill our water. We got the spring rolls, rooster wings, short rib pho, and shaking beef vermicelli (I think it was called angus cubes on the menu?). Spring rolls ($8)- 5/5. These were crispy, wrapped in rice paper, and had pork/mushroom/vermicelli. They were delicious and came just the right amount of crunchy and flavor. Make sure to check in on Yelp to get these for free! Rooster wings ($10)- 4.5/5. These wings are very crispy on the outside and tender in the middle. They were cooked to perfection and super moist. They were sticky and mostly sweet with very little to no spice. I think I would have preferred them if they were saltier but no complaints here. Beef Cubes Vermicelli ($16)- 3/5. Meh. This was definitely overpriced and came with very little beef. There was a sauce that I poured over, but the flavor was definitely lacking. It wasn't bad, but for the price, I'd definitely opt for something else. Pho Shortrib ($17)- 5/5. Delicious! This was a great take on classic Vietnamese pho that I'm used to in Chinatown. It was very light and didn't have the classic "dirty" taste (dirtier the tastier though ;)). The noodles were very moist and soft; they were much chewier than the rice noodles in classic pho. The short rib was also fall off the bone delicious. It was the right amount of fatty, juicy, and tender. Would highly recommend this! Overall, I would definitely come back to 5ive Spice! So I was excited to try the Viet tacos. Sadly they didn't live up to the hype. The pork filling was good but the taco shells was soggy. Overall it felt like something was missing. The bahn mi was probably the best part of the meal. The bread was good without cutting your mouth and it had the same yummy pork filling that the tacos had. The mango salad was decent and quite big. What's even better about the LES spot is that the interior is much more spacious and allows for a more comfortable dining experience once indoor seating resumes. The combination of Mexican and Vietnamese cuisine left my tastebuds delighted as the flavors actually complimented each other. For my visit, I ordered several dishes: Loaded Fries with Dip (side), 5ive Special (Pho), Shaking Beef (Vermicelli), and Beer Battered Fish Tacos. Foremost, the pho at this restaurant was truly exceptional. The broth was rich and savory with a pleasant hint of cinnamon. It came with plentiful slices of tender beef and a reasonably sized piece of boneless short rib. The short rib itself was cooked nicely and was topped with a delicious, tangy garnish. The size of the bowl is a bit on the smaller side when compared with other restaurants that serve an "Extra Large Bowl" option. However, it is important to note that the menu did not provide any sizing information for this item. The Loaded Fries was a delicious side. It came with several morsels of angus beef briskey and was seasoned with a blend of Mexican spices and Vietnamese sauces. Although the Shaking Beef was a fresh and savory dish, it was less appealing than the 5ive Special. The shredded pickled carrots and radish were delicious and added a nice texture to dish along with the lettuce and pickled mustard greens. However, the portion of the beef was a bit upsetting. The beef itself was tender and flavorful, but it seems that the amount of vegetables overwhelmed the dish. Lastly, the Beer Battered Fish Tacos was a mouthwatering fusion of Mexican and Vietnamese cuisine, as the flavors perfectly complimented each other. The tacos were served with a side of salsa and fish sauce. The tacos itself was topped with cilantro and shredded pickled carrots and radish. The flavor of this dish was truly distinctive, as it felt like I had taken a bite out of a "breadless" banh mi that was in the form of a taco. The fish was also well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Moreover, the taco shells (coconut rice crepe) also had a distinctive texture that really helped bind the dish together. Overall, the ambiance of the restaurant was also charming, with a nice modern, bar-like décor that created an inviting atmosphere. The service was also attentive and friendly, adding to the overall positive experience. In conclusion, this Vietnamese-Mexican fusion restaurant exceeded my expectations with its flavorful and delicious pho and creative fusion dishes. I had lunch here with my girlfriend to celebrate Valentine's Day. The return of indoor dining has been exciting, and they take it very seriously here: employees wear masks and gloves, temperatures are checked, and hand sanitizer is widely available. I felt safe and secure at my table. The menu has lots of interesting items for a Vietnamese fusion vibe. You can get a staple, like a banh mi, or something unusual, like tacos. I ordered the regular beef pho, while my girlfriend went in a more adventurous route, opting for the short rib pho. My food was delicious, a big bowl of flavorful broth with a fair portion of noodles and several pieces each of brisket and round. I added in all the cilantro, Jalapeños, and bean sprouts, then stirred everything together. This is a solid bowl of pho, superior to what I've had at some of the more popular places in the city. My girlfriend's short rib pho was also outstanding. The meat was delicious, tender and properly seasoned, and plenty of it. The broth is a variation on the normal recipe with exciting flavors from different sources. We wholeheartedly recommend. Despite there being a few mixups with our order, staff was attentive, stayed super polite the whole time, and never rushed us to leave (we came and stayed pretty close till closing time). From the crackly bread that seems to be made in house, or I'm hoping, to the sweet and sour carrots and the bitterness of the cilantro, it all works magically to create this flavor bomb of a sandwich. The atmosphere seemed nice and not too bright or too dim.it was a very inviting place to go into and we were seated quickly. We got the 5ive special and the loaded fries The loaded fries themselves were done to a decently crispy texture and the brisket was cooked to a perfect doneness. The problem is that the flavors just wasn't that great. The meat had a citrus sourness which worked well with the meat but it didn't fit a flavor that worked that well with fries. The fries also came out overfilling their container so you couldn't really mix the meat and fries together without just eating half the meat first (which I felt was okay to me since it wasn't that enjoyable mixed for me). The dip that came with it was very weak in flavor. It tastes very watery as if you just poured water onto a steak and called it dip. The 5ive special noodles is their take on pho. I would say it didn't hit the spot compared to a normal bowl of pho. It came out barely hot enough to be considered warm and was a much smaller portion than I would expect for a $21 bowl of pho. The short rib in it was perfect, great flavor and texture, but because of how lukewarm the dish was, it felt lacking. The beef balls in it also didn't feel tender due to temperature of the soup. The flavor of the broth felt too heavy and not as nice and clean as most vietnamese noodle soups such as pho. The broth had a strong clove or cinnamon flavor in it that might be the main flavor that I didn't enjoy too much. In the end I think I might come back and try something else but I would not return again for the same dishes. read more

I visited the restaurant with a friend on a Saturday night and there was a 20ish minute wait for a seat indoors. The menus were retrieved through QR codes on the table and there were so many yummy things to choose from but we decided on: - lychee punch: sweet and light, I was drinking on an empty stomach prior to getting there so my assessment of how strong it was wont be accurate but it was delicious - braised short rib: ohmygodd. Literally fell off the bone, sooo tender. There was a thick layer of fat (which I'm a fan of) and the entire thing melted like butter in your mouth - brussel sprouts: I actually hate brussel sprouts and was pouting at my friend for ordering it, but they come in a bowl with crispy shallots of top so I decided to give it a try and it was probably one of my favorite things of the night. They have a sweet and smoky taste and once you have one, you cannot stop eating. I would just want extra fried shallots but that's because I like the texture of the crunch - spring rolls: they were okay. Crunchy, super hot, and nice to eat but I'm not daydreaming about them - bun bo hue: satisfying, not as spicy as I was expecting, not a ton of noodles but it was a nice soup I would definitely return for the brussel sprouts. Had to check this place out after seeing it on Mike Chen's video. Came here on a Friday night around 8 PM and was able to get a walk-in table right away. They have a Yelp check-in offer that gives you free dumplings/rolls, but they won't add the discount to your check until you leave a Yelp review.
