Very convenient to VCU for a quick brunch/lunch! Small place, funky decorations with some interesting artwork hanging on walls for sale. Got table right away, friendly waitress brought menus and waters quickly. Lots of interesting choices to pick from! After we placed our orders we waited a bit longer than I expected since there were empty tables around but once food came it was all forgotten! Definitely have to try Nutella stuffed French toast that was so yummy! Bacon and Brie omelet - yummy, crispy chewy bacon pieces with melted Brie wrapped in thin egg omelet! I though it will be greasy but I was wrong! Comes with 2 sides I had turkey sausage and crispy potatoes! Large Greek salad - huge portion, fresh veggies and feta! Delish! Baked potato omelet was very tasty too, has smashed potato, cheese and bacon with sprinkled green onions and side of sour cream. Ordered it with biscuit that was huge and fluffy but maybe a bit dry. Will definitely come back when in the area, very charming spot. read more

This place was recommended to us so we went & sat at the bar. Service was meh...... like everyone hated their job. The beverage we got was delicious!! Ironically 821 is located at 825 w Main Street. I should've asked about the name but didn't think to. Anyway, after checking the menu I was definitely excited there were SO many options and their potatoes featured my absolute favorite herb, ROSEMARY (more on that later)! You have to get here right at opening if you want to be seated immediately. It was not even 9:45 when I arrived (they opened at 9) and the house was PACKED and there were 3 parties ahead of mine. The wait was about 20 minutes and it honestly only made me anticipate the food more! I order a guava mimosa that was pretty good. Nice portion for the price $7. I had the French toast platter and my counterpart had the western omelet. We waited at least 30 minutes for our food which seemed like a long time since they were crowded but most tables already had food. The French toast was soggy and not my favorite, scrambled eggs a little too hard. My counterpart enjoyed the omelet but the potatoes are truly the star. Perfectly crisp and seasoned to perfection. I feel like the French toast could be improved if they cooked it for the same amount of time on both sides. I didn't get a pic but French toast was completely white on one side read more

On our journey to try more plant-based foods I found 821 Cafe. I was pretty impressed with my PLNT burger as it was my first one ever. As a long time meat eater I can say that the burger tasted very beefy. The only taste difference was really from the cheese, which had that typical vegan cheese taste. To me, it taste too buttery almost. Regardless, I was blown away at how similar the vegan burger is to a regular burger. If you're ever curious, give it a try! My boyfriend tried their fried chicken sandwich and it had so much flavor from their sauce. Again, really impressed with how well it tasted. The only thing that I didn't care for was the vegan chili. It did lack quite a bit of flavor and tasted bland. But other than that, a fantastic place. read more

Cute, classic diner vibe with a homey feel, and great vegetarian/vegan options! Came here with a friend for weekend brunch and we shared the Vegan Breakfast Burrito and Lemon Curd French Toast. The burrito was more flavorful than I expected - hearty and filling, definitely spread the accompanying salsa on each bite for added deliciousness! The biscuit it came with was perfect and honestly I loved the simple bites of butter, Smucker's fruit jam, and the flaky biscuit. The star of the meal was the french toast - with the right amount of tang from the lemon, to the sweetness from the sugar, freshness from the fruit, and fluffy texture, it was a fave dish. Portions were pretty standard size, and I wish they had espresso coffee drink options, but all in all a good meal. Location is also great for walking around afterwards on a nice day! read more

November 2020 - COVID Review: Nice and quaint spot near VCU's campus! The space inside isn't too big - so during COVID times I would recommend ordering takeout or coming to dine in during off peak hours. Their menu is pretty diverse with a lot of options. I also liked that they had a lot of vegan menu items if you're vegan and/or like to eat that every so often. My husband and I got the philly sub and cuban sandwich to share a half of each. For vegans with non vegan families this is one of the best restaurants you can go to to please everyone. They have something for everybody. I highly recommended going for brunch, as they have great breakfast options. I haven't been able to find any other restaurant with vegan pancakes other than silver diner which is an investment. Can get pretty busy on the weekends, so I would go early. Overall, me and my bfs favorite restaurant :) read more

Came down to VCU to visit our granddaughter and she recommended 821 for brunch which is right across from the parking deck which is right across from her dorm so she's already had experience there. For a small place they have a very expensive menu but Keila and I opted for all the calories. She had French toast stuff with Nutella and I had French toast stuff with lemon. Both of them were. Their lunch and dinner menus look awesome too. We have to try those on next visit! read more

Was recommended by airbnb host. Food was decent but took 45 min to come out. Waitress never checked on us or even walked by to refill coffee and water. Seems like the poor service is a common theme here based on other reviews. Again, food was pretty good, but did not outweigh the bad service. read more

Did not disappoint! Found this spot on social media via a post by Andersen Paak. And on a quick overnight trip on a Sunday, it was one of few spots that lent appeal, that was actually open. I read reviews about vegan options and although I'm not, I don't eat meat presently. I popped in, quick ride from my hotel. I was able to grab a seat. Customer service was great and staff were super attentive. I had a gin lemonade which was yummy and opted for the kimchi and cornmeal waffle with plant based fried chicken and scrambled eggs w/ cheese and rosemary home fries. YUM! Nothing, ya hear me. Nothing disappointed. Even the couple next to me was like that looks delicious. The waffle was amazing and the flavors of kimchi with pickled cucumber and the chicken was fried lovely with a delicious sauce. The sweetness of the syrup balanced the tang of the sauce. OMG, so good. Would've never thought of that combo. Eggs were great, not runny or hard. Just right, and the home fries were yummy too. Its hard to find traditional breakfast offerings like that and plant based. And they had a vegan bloody mary and quite a few other offerings. And its really a very casual and lowkey diner. It doesn't necessarily give off being as good as it is. Just goes to show, don't judge a book ...I got the vegan chocolate cake with ganache to go, and ended up eating at the bar of my hotel while working. Definitely one of those spots I can't miss next time I'm in town. read more

I live in the neighborhood and I've been going to 821 for years and really love this spot - but the last few times I've been in I've received such awful service - generally all of the servers are amazing but If im sat in this one particular servers spot I know that I shouldn't expect a check in after I've gotten my food - or If I ask for a refill on drinks she'll forget and be back on her phone or head out the back - I'd definitely be more understanding if they were busy but looking at all the other servers who are running food, bussing tables, bringing drinks, and the host especially is always Killing it and doing the most - I hate to see this one girl doing absolutely nothing while also being straight up rude to me and my friends. I think the managers of 821 should seriously consider doing something because there are several other reviews about poor service, and 821 is otherwise an amazing spot and I would love to keep coming in :/ read more

This place never disappoints. I normally get my favorite.. vegan chicken sandwich with fries. I have recently found out they now have boneless vegan wings. I didnt think they could improve on my chicken sandwich but these wings are THE TRUTH. so good, and the serving size is awesome. 12 big pieces with celery and ranch dressing. I got some potatoes on the side instead of fries too. The vegan cake is a huge slide of happiness too. Cute little (emphasis on little) restaurant with an large menu. They were out of several items so my meal was my third choice. Overall, the food was good for a to go order. I will say it would have likely been better if I had eaten at the restaurant. The biscuit was huge and dense. The best part of the meal was the potent mimosa, but they put ice in it which took away from the taste. Overall, a nice spot for a quick bite. read more

We eat here every time we see a show at the Altria Theater. It's close and convenient to parking and the theater. Get there early if there's a show! You can expect to wait up to an hour on those days. Food is mostly sandwich fare, but they offer a creative take and have LOTS of vegan/vegetarian options. I almost always end up with the black bean sweet potato burger, and I'm a carnivore!! read more

I was drawn to the smoked salmon BLT. I never tried this combo but you have to try it. It was so good! By no means is this healthy. The sandwich was packed with salty smoked salmon and sweet bacon. Very good breakfast. Packed when we got there around 11 am. I had 2 fried eggs/vegan sausage/white toast and Iced coffee. The wife had myo (make your own) omelette w/spinach,onions and mushrooms and reg coffee with soy milk. Food came out pretty quickly, perfectly made as ordered and our server was great (she was very busy and very patient with everyone-I didn't get her name.) Food: 10/10 My go to for breakfast option anywhere is the breakfast burrito and the 821 Cafe breakfast burrito did not disappoint! It was incredible from start to finish. One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to burritos is when the ingredients are sectioned off within the tortilla so each bite is entirely 1 ingredient. 821 cafe did a phenomenal job of spreading everything out so each bit was a bit of everything. The potatoes, fruit and biscuits are to die for as well. They have unique mimosa options that we definitely took advantage of and they come in VERY generous portions, you won't be disappointed! Service: 9/10 Absolutely attentive and prompt service! Just not as personable as we expected a bartender to be, which is definitely a plus to some! Ambiance: local and hip The indoor space is not large by any means but they make the most of it and don't make it feel too crowded. They also offer outdoor seating which is super cute and fun! read more

So, so good!! They have a bunch of options for EVERYONE. I love breakfast food but I don't eat pork or beef so finding a place that had biscuits and gravy and vegetarian breakfast meat that is actually yummy is exciting. And my partner hates breakfast so he ordered a Philly steak sub and ~he's very picky~ LOVED it. I only took a star off because my $10 coffee cocktail was disappointing. It was VERY watered down. Also because this place is moderately pricey for a cafe. I think our bill was over $50 for 2 meals, 2 drinks (one tea and one cocktail) and one extra side. read more

This place holds a special place in my heart as it is in the middle of the undergrad VCU campus. You'll get a mixed crowd of college kids and hipsters alike in this small place. Honestly, not the best brunch in Richmond in terms of innovative dishes, but a pretty good spot for staple brunch items for decently cheap with a laid back vibe. Extra amazing though if you're vegetarian or vegan - they have a ton of options and are super accommodating. Try: Nutella French toast, the Big Fancy, anything on the specials menu! read more

Sigh. This place used to be good during my days at VCU. Im starting to think it was maybe my poor student taste buds with lack of good experiences. The service was kind of slow there too. The food is just alright. The potatoes were salty to the point we needed refills after refills (which didn't really come much). The burritos lacked a but of flavor and the omelettes were too overdone. read more

Very nicely done. The salad with home ranch was dressed nicely and the dressing was light. The scallops were cooked well and perhaps my only criticism is that the corn purée was better in concept than execution. I can't say enough about the staff. We were two people on a Sunday night crazy enough to dine in a downpour. The staff never made us feel like they wanted to punch out, embraced us being outside and were creative in waiting on us with umbrellas to keep the food from getting wet. It would have been understandable for them to limit the trips to check on us, but they persevered and made us feel welcome. My only tip is that you think hard before deciding to eat on the patios if it's cold and windy, the umbrellas will attempt to fly away. It can also get chili on a brisk day. No parking lot but plenty of street parking.

My daughter and I stopped in here the other day for a late breakfast. I'd seen the reviews before and was tempted. And since it was in the neighborhood - we stopped in. I went with the simple works bagel plate - it was fresh and quite good. My daughter ordered one of their breakfast bowls. It was a nice sized serving and also quite good. I got an iced latte with vanilla bean and my partner ordered an iced coffee with brown sugar cinnamon. 10/10 on both. Seriously. One of the best lattes I've had in this area and the prices were LOW compared to other cafes. My 12 oz latte was under $6 and so was my partners coffee. The people were nice who work here as well and seemed to know what they were doing.

It had eggs to order, choice of meat, red potatoes, and homemade biscuit which was light and fluffy. Coffee was good and strong. Husband had the the big city breakfast. It had eggs, 2 choice of meats, choice of potatoes or apples and toast. Hubby said it was all good. Staff was on top of refills and friendly. Place was clean. Will be back.

I had been telling my Dad for a while about how fun this place is, how nice everyone usually is, and how much I thought he would enjoy it. We were finally able to come together today, and he was genuinely excited to see the inside and have breakfast here for the first time. As expected, we were told the wait would be about 45-50 minutes. Fine. The place was busy, as it usually is, and we had absolutely no problem waiting. I spent years working as a server and hostess. I understand busy restaurants, long waits, and tables that don't turn as quickly as expected. After waiting about 40 minutes, I went to the host stand to simply ask for an update. We had watched people leave and groups continue to be seated during our wait, so I wanted to see where we stood. The young man at the host stand told me it would be ANOTHER 40-50 minutes. I genuinely thought he had confused our name with someone else's, so I explained that we had already been waiting for 40 minutes. He told me our names were "at the bottom of the list" and that people inside were moving very slowly. No apology. No double-checking the list. No attempt to figure out how a quoted 45-50 minute wait had suddenly turned into an hour and a half. He didn't ask if we were willing to sit inside, offer another seating option, or even suggest placing a to-go order. Nothing. He was completely dismissive. So I handed him the menu and my Dad and I left. Then, just 20 MINUTES later--not the additional 40-50 minutes we had literally just been told--I received a call saying our table was ready. I tried to explain that we were no longer there and WHY we had left. The second I said we had "left," I was HUNG UP ON. Honestly, that was it for me. Before that phone call, I was actually sitting in the car telling my Dad that maybe we could try again another day. Despite being embarrassed and disappointed after talking this place up to him so much, I was still willing to chalk it up to a bad interaction with one host. Getting hung up on completely sealed the deal. I'm not angry because the restaurant was busy. I'm angry because we were treated like we didn't matter. I'm angry because we waited patiently for 40 minutes, politely asked one question, and were dismissed with inaccurate information instead of someone taking 30 seconds to double-check. I'm angry because when I tried to explain what had happened, I wasn't even given the basic courtesy of finishing a sentence before someone hung up on me. My Dad and I have lived in Lakeside for over 30 years. We weren't asking to skip the line. We weren't demanding a table. We weren't rude to anyone. We were two local customers who were excited to have breakfast together at a place I had genuinely loved and recommended to other people. We will NEVER be back. And yes, we will absolutely be telling our friends, family, and neighbors about how we were treated and recommending that they go somewhere else unless they want to risk being dismissed, given completely inaccurate wait information, and hung up on when they try to explain why they left. Apparently this place is busy enough that treating people with basic courtesy no longer matters. That's fine. There are plenty of other restaurants that will happily take our money and, at the very least, treat my Dad and me like human beings. What was supposed to be a fun breakfast with my Dad turned into one of the worst customer service experiences I've had in a long time. I went from genuinely loving and recommending this place to never wanting to step foot inside again. Congratulations. You lost two longtime local customers in less than an hour.

Mimi opted to try "Grilled Chicken Club: Sliced grilled chicken, ham, bacon, Swiss, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on rye ( the rye bread was amazing, the sandwich as a whole was filling but could've used more seasoning (ideally the bacon/ham would give the salty factor but a tad more on the actual chicken would've made it a good sando 3.4/5), her fries were cold so we can't in fairness rate them but we didn't bother to send them back as we had so much food between the two of us. I ordered three gimlets and he had two gimlets (at $9 each). For food, I ordered the mozzarella logs to share plus the Franklin Clucker with plant-based chicken and (real) bacon. Added a side of ranch for my fries. My boyfriend ordered 12 jumbo wings and somehow ate them all; it was quite the feat. All told we spent about $120 for everything, which isn't terrible these days. Service was prompt, and everything tasted good. It took me three days to finish my sandwich, so I'd say that I got my money's worth.
