You come here for the listening nights which as of late they have not been doing much of. My wife Sam and I went to 888 for my birthday and we both really liked it. The place has a great vibe with stylish décor, a super cool vinyl wall, and a DJ spinning vinyl records. We sat at the sushi bar, which I loved because it felt like we were right in the action but the regular bar and booths looked just as inviting. The staff was incredibly friendly. The cocktails were fantastic. Sam had the "Cheet Code," and I had the Matcha Mezcal Sour. The mezcal flavor really stood out, not so much the matcha, but it was still delicious. For appetizers, the yellowtail and jalapeño dish was hands down our favorite, I want to drink that sauce. So fresh and flavorful. The wagyu skewers and chicken skewers were good but skippable next time. I'd rather try their cucumbers or another veggie dish. We shared the whole branzino and it was beautifully cooked, perfectly seasoned, and served with a flavorful aioli. We also tried the hot salmon sushi, which was excellent. Honestly, these two are a must-try if you're ever in town! A little tip: the restaurant is a bit tricky to find--it's tucked on the corner of 8th and Clark. A nice touch/extra step they take with their quality is they state on their menu where they source their seafood directly from - Toyosu market in Tokyo, Japan. I have a hook up there so I got to extensively/exclusively tour the Toyosu market back in 2024. I can confirm - everything there is very fresh and first-rate. I really tasted the premium quality at 888 in their 888 roll; it combines multiple different kinds of fish and each one is sooo buttery soft. The green sauce that comes with the 888 roll on the side is amazing. Never tasted anything like it before; it has a nice kick to it. I asked for a whole side of it and dunked every piece of sushi in it as I went. We went during happy hour, which I recommend. Loved the tuna tataki so much that we had to order another round! I usually don't like eating ginger with my sushi/fish, but it was already rolled into each piece of tuna; no complaints! The flavor combo was excellent. I thought the surf and turf roll was interesting. I didn't taste much lobster, so that was slightly disappointing. David was our bartender/server. He was excellent! He made my friend's drink so good that she had to get another round. She said that was the best lemon drop she has ever had, hands down. I will say, the restaurant is VERY dark. When you walk into 888, the ambiance gives sophisticated, speakeasy-esque restaurant with a DJ playing records from their abundant collection. This was one of the things I liked best! They also had a sign on the table saying Happy Birthday and a signed card from some of the staff for my boyfriend's birthday. Our server Wyatt was SO knowledgeable about the menu and drinks, he was easily able to steer us in the direction we wanted to go regarding both drinks and food. He was attentive but not overbearing and knew the menu inside and out. We did the Premium Miyabi experience, which was a great way to try a lot of items on the menu you (at least I) would not normally have picked to try. The premium included items from the sushi menu that was not included from the normal Miyabi experience. Overall the food was good, but nothing was an absolute stand out. This restaurant is such a place! I love walking into a restaurant and it just feels like it's going to be a vibe. We just happen to stop in last minute and sat at the bar. I had the expresso martini and it had Ube I believe in it and it was pretty good. And my friend just told the bartender to just make her something light and refreshing and I think he made her some type of lychee martini and she liked it. And we just came from eating somewhere else but I don't know how we ended up ordering fried rice and it was actually pretty good. But I just really like the vibe and ambience in there. Birthday celebration for a friend at 888 sushi. We did the Premium Miyabi experience. For $115 you get some craft selections from the chef, and then various items from the regular and sushi menu. We all really enjoyed this experience. There are 3 levels to miyabe. Roughly a $85 option, $115 option and a $195 option. I don't know how anyone would have room for all the food with the $195 option, $115 seemed to be the sweet spot. The ambience of the restaurant is very dark, intimate but also upbeat? They have a DJ, not in the traditional sense but that picks vinyl records from the THOUSANDS and plays them during your meal. Ranging from old rock, grunge rock to modern rap, to chill relaxing tunes. First and foremost I think our servers name was Wyatt? Anywho, he was the most involved, menu knowledgeable server I think I have ever had. The pork wonton had an incredible mix of textures and flavors. The jalapeño salmon was good, very fresh and the jakoenos added a nice kick to the thin cut of salmon and saltiness from the roe. Edamame had a nice chile powder/glaze that is exactly the spice level I want for edamame. Cucumber salad is normally not for me at all, however I believe this cucumber had a slight pickled flavor/vineger and combined with the same chile powder from the edamame was really enjoyable. Next was the egg crème sandwich. I have never had anything like this before so I didn't know what to expect. It was very good, however the egg crème really didn't have much flavor, so it really tasted mostly like a buttered toast sandwhich (not a bad thing). The bone marrow was great, however my piece of the bone marrow had a texture issue that really freaked me out. Typically when I have had bone marrow it is like a jam or jelly and easily sliceable to portion. My bone marrow had the consistency of almost rubber? It was all in one piece and looked like a jellyfish (still tasted great, it just visually freaked me out lol.) Next was a crunchy tuna roll, kind of what you expect nothing stellar. The nigiri was fine about what you would expect from lean tuna and yellowtail. The fried rice with chicken, mushrooms and carrots was savory, had a slight sweetness from a poured in glaze and was delicious. However for the price it appears normally on the menu I don't think I would order again. Lastly the mango shaved ice and matcha cake were fantastic! The ONLY downside I would say to this whole experience was that everything was good, but nothing REALLY REALLY stood out (besides the service and attentiveness to our party.) read more

I didn't try it because I don't like fried chicken but she said it was really good. My girlfriend got the Shishido peppers and edamame. This edamame was the best edamame I've ever had. It was chili and garlic, and it was perfect. The Shishido peppers were also really interesting and had tempura flakes on it with scallions, again another win. Our server was so sweet. I do think it was dimmer than it needed to be, but I may just be getting old. We started off with cocktails (Escape to NY and Fuji Apple Fizz). Neither were mind-blowing but I enjoyed the NY sour with an Asian twist more than my wife did hers. The tallow fries and kushiyaki followed our drinks. Tallow fries had a great crunch on the outside while remaining soft on inside; pretty much a perfect fry. The kushiyaki tasted great but was unfortunately too salty for our tastes. The crab, noodles, mushrooms and caviar were great. The broth was a little too citrus and unbalanced. For dessert we got the basque matcha cheesecake. This might just be one of my favorite restaurants I've ever visited. While it was difficult to find the entrance, it was well worth it when you walk in. The vibes are immaculate, and you can tell everything has been picked with the ambiance in mind, the music was amazing, and the wait staff was seriously so friendly. I did feel a little underdressed when I showed up (I was in jeans shorts and a top) but no one made me feel like I didn't belong there which was an amazing feeling. Moving on to the food, the menu is limited and personally that's what I usually prefer, there were a handful of specialty items and they blew us away! I'm lucky to travel and eat at nice restaurants very consistently so that's saying something. Literally from start to finish, 888 was horrible. We dined as a group of 4, our friends having made the reservation. We were seated in an odd table right next to the kitchen pass through & bathrooms. Not many were dining at 5pm when we arrived but that's where they chose to seat us. From the start, our waitress didn't come over for a very long time. We ordered some of their ridiculously priced drinks ($18 a pop & small). Our first drinks took 20 mins or more to come out. Basically had to ask our waitress to go over the menu and again to finally order. We barely saw our waitress period. And she didn't have many tables. The food here... is bad. Offensively bad. The yellowtail starter I thought looked promising but was flavorless. Tuna tartare, forgettable & not fresh. Our friends got some rolls that were horrible and they stopped eating them. The hand rolls were so bad, my husband and I each took a bite and left them. Took an hour to get the nigiri we ordered. The Chu Toro (medium fat tuna) was one of the most repulsive things I've eaten in recent memory. It was inedible and so chewy and poor quality, I had to just swallow it as I didn't want to spit it out at the table. Toro is usually lovely and a favorite of mine, this was upsetting to be served. My husband shared the same feeling. We had another order that I was going to send back as soon as we saw our waitress. Also, the prices for this absolute trash food is outrageous. Waitress mentioned that they have fresh wasabi they could bring out..they finally brought a little dollop of it to us and I look today and they charged us $12 for the wasabi. Are you guys actually serious? We had to flag the waitress down nearly 2 hours later to tell her to cancel our remaining food (that still hadn't come out). I told her our toro nigiri was inedible and she simply said "ok" and took it away. Brought us our checks without an apology or explanation. We were appalled. Our waitress was named "Leah" from what I see on our check. I have a feeling this happens often as there was absolutely zero concern or hint of customer service. Truly, a horrible experience with horrible service. And not one of the managers came by to address the issue. $600 check for the worst meal the 4 of us have ever had. Btw, this waitress had the audacity to charge us for the toro we sent back and didn't eat. $24. This place was highly recommended by the locals so we decided to try it. It was a surprise the entrance since it didn't have the name upfront, so it's hidden on purpose. Once you enter it's a surprise and very inviting environment. The ambiance is relaxed, upscale and with a DJ at the sushi bar spinning old style LP's music. Super cool vibe. We came on a Wednesday and it was packed so we made reservations just in case. We ordered gor cocktail their signature Matcha Mezcal Sour. It was out of this world so light and refreshing. For food we ordered the Mushroom Gyoza, a few sashimis, Tiger Roll and 888 Roll and a Blue Crab Handroll. Everything was made so delicately and exquisite. Each bite melted in your mouth. Only high quality ingredients were used. Service was excellent but you have to be prepared to wait a bit for each dish. Definitely a place to celebrate something special and enjoy if you are here in Nashville and love excellent quality in sushi. Not your average place. $200 bill for two people. read more
