A+A has always been on our to-eat list, but only now got to make the drive west to try it out. Definitely been missing out! They're currently still doing takeout only as of May 8, 2021, and their ordering process has been pretty straightforward with no issues with missing items. We ordered the Stir Fried Pork Intestines with Soft Tofu, Spicy Fish Filet, and Stir Fried Pea Leaves. All orders coming with a nice heaping box of rice. Overall, everything was delicious, and the sauces were super good with the rice. Notables include the fish filets, which were slightly crispy on the outside, and the snow pea leaves, which were addicting. Spice levels were on the low side. My tolerance of spice isn't great, but the spiciness of the sauces were easily manageable and a lot more mild than that at the other Sichuan restaurants in Austin. If you're a super fan of spice, I would definitely make a request for them to make it extra spicy, if possible. read more

Hands down one of the best AUTHENTIC Chinese restaurants in Austin. We've been coming here since they opened years ago; worth the drive from South Austin! I wish there were more restaurants like A+A because we don't have enough authentic Chinese food here. Their pork with mustard greens (雪里红肉丝) is probably my favorite dish. It's fragrant and we'll balanced with meat and veggies and mixes well with rice. I also love their fish fillet with sour mustard (酸菜鱼). It's a great soupy dish, warm and filling on cold winter days. The fish is plentiful and delicate. We also like their spicy fish fillet (水煮鱼). The restaurant recently moved to a new location that's smaller. I hope it's not a sign business is poor. The food was good and the portions were ample. It is located in a strip mall and is a fairly large place. The interior is decorated in Chinese motif, but you can tell it has seen better days and looks a little run down. There were cobwebs on the venetian blinds. So if atmosphere is important, you might want to skip this place. Everything for dinner was priced A la carte except the Moo Goo Gia Pan came with a side of white rice even though the menu didn't mention it. There must be 100 selections on the menu, all with just a Chinese name and no description or picture at all. Wasn't sure exactly what would come with each dish until it arrived. The soft drinks are sold in cans for $1.75 each, so no refills on soft drinks. I had Moo Goo Gia Pan and It was in a mild white sauce. The chicken slices were tender, the sauce seasoned well, and the vegetables were done to perfection. There was enough for lunch the next day. My wife had the Chicken lo Mein which she said was good as well. But the chicken appeared to be ground as it was in very small pieces. She also had enough for lunch the next day. We were there between 6 and 7 pm on Sunday evening. Only one other customer when we arrived who finished as soon as we got our food. We were there alone until we were almost done when one family came in. The service was adequate but not at all engaging. Although we were the loan customers through much of our meal, he never came back to see if we needed a drink refill. The waiter did check once with an "is everything OK" at the start of the meal. Had to beckon for a take out box and the check. I counted 5 staff there, so you would expect a little more attentiveness. This place is out of the way from our house, so we most likely will not eat here again. It's not bad if you're in the neighborhood and in the mood for Chinese food, but nothing to drive out of the way for. read more

This has been a solid takeout place. I love their packaging details to secure the food because Chinese Sizhuan food is oily and easy to spill. The generous amount of rice and short wait time are also some pluses. I love their mapo tofu. But the spicy fish fillet is different from what I usually get from other places. Theirs is more red oil based instead of soy sauce based. It's still good but it becomes very similar to the mapo tofu sauce. The food is usually oily so won't order too frequently for health purpose. But will for sure come back some time for more Chinese food! read more

I have mixed feeling for A+A. They deliver outstanding fishes and not so awesome ones. The two dishes we absolutely love are Spicy Fish Fillet (水煮魚) and Twice Cooked Pork (回鍋肉). If I was giving a review just on those two dishes, it'd be a 4.5 star review and they 90% of the time would not mess those up. We'd order these weekly/biweekly for the last two months. Ok dishes would be Szechuan stir fried chicken with chili (四川辣子雞), Young Chou fried rice (揚州炒飯), homemade dumplings(considered okay but would not order again unless there's no other food for the little one to eat), pork with dried bean curd (香干肉絲), and fried chicken wings(炸雞翅). Dishes that are very different from my expectations (the ones I avoid now) are: sweet and sour pork chop (糖醋排骨), stir fried pea leaves (炒豆苗, this was way overcooked when we ordered it), and teppan beef (鐵板香辣牛肉). The temperature has been dropping past couple of days and with that I've gotten a craving for Ma Po Tofu. Decided to order delivery from here and check out their version of the dish. Food arrived very fast and was still nice and warm upon opening. Immediately the heat levels were exactly what I was hoping for. Spicy with the slightly numbing Szechuan peppercorn, yum! I am so excited to find a local Szechuan place that uses Szechuan peppercorn. The tofu and pork were both cooked to perfection and all the other seasonings combined made this dish stand out on this cold day. Rice was cooked well and was a nice addition to the tofu. Not as good as the first time...I order here through GrubHub or maybe it is because after I ordered from Hunan 620 it was better and I just cannot compare the two. I cannot speak much on the customer service since I have never dined in, but typically when I pick up it is not busy, there is hardly anyone ever there. So I am not sure when their busy times are. I ordered General Tso extra spicy... The food was soggy, I found gristles in my chicken... The various pieces of meat where at times questionable.... the Veggie Eggrolls were once frozen and chewy by the time that I got them. Just not....appetizing. It is sitting in my refrigerator. Can't say anything about delivery but I can say that both times I've gotten food from here it has been amazing. The first time my friends and I tried this place, we were honestly almost scared off by the appearance and the fact that we were the only ones inside. I'm so glad we stayed to try it, however as I found my new favorite chinese food place near Parmer. We shared the eggplant with garlic sauce which was AMAZING. I had the sesame chicken which was also very tasty. I don't remember what other dishes we tried, but we left feeling very full and happy. This most recent time, I got take out and ordered over the phone. We got the egg drop soup and spicy fish fillet at the recommendations of another friend and I tried the garlic pork. The soup was a bit on the bland side, and honestly not that impressive. But the fish... The fish was SO GOOD. Both the garlic pork and the fish were well seasoned, saucy, and just tasted great. I'm drooling now just thinking about it haha! For having it as take out and for the price, I feel like they really do give ample portions. Overall I am very happy with my experience here so far. A+A is the grade I would give the food at this Sichuan restaurant. Mapo tofu is a cauldron of spicy, tongue-numbing, radioactive red waves lapping against homey cubes of silky tofu and power nugs of ground pork. It's like the sloppy joe mess that we all should've grown up with as opposed to Hamburger Helper. Next: Cold dishes are a gateway to the delicious unknown. This section of the menu, so far, is really all about that oily, peppercorny, chile-suffused sauce whether it be dunking shreds of chicken and mung bean noodles or slices of cartilaginous pig ear. Ok ya'll, now for the real deal: DRY POT. This is...oh my god...this is where you want to plant your flag. Don't know where to begin or how to describe this magical dish. You can get it with any protein, even rabbit. I went with the chicken. I'm going to say it only once: Go with BONE-IN. Bone brings vital flavor. A+A's dry pot chicken is somewhat fried, and comes with a tangle of cilantro, celery, potato slices, woodear mushrooms, this sauce that you'd stab someone near and dear for a spoonful of. GO to this place. And don't get all uptight about the weird smells in the bathroom b/c who the f cares. Just pee at home. Dinner expected between 630-640 and then after no updates or communication I have an offer to feed my kids at 930 pm. And of course GrubHub will do nothing but cancel my $70 order. So now no dinner. This place is the middle child of the sichuan places in Austin to me with its older more refined brother Szechuan House, and its younger brother Asia cafe. To put this analogy into perspective, Asia Cafe is the young sibling. He cares mostly about price (its cheap), and is a growing boy (food quantity is very large) and quality is an afterthought (though don't take this the wrong way as Asia cafe is still really good). Szechuan house meanwhile has realized with age comes refinement (i.e. people willing to pay more for less food, but the quality is really really good for what he eats). A+A is the median: price in between the three, quantity in between the three and quality in between the three. Just like my current state in life after college, hopping into working life but not quite "old." Anyways, we got three baseline dishes to compare to other places and then adventured outwards: mapo tofu, spicy fish and water spinach. Water spinach is fresh, cooked the way i'm used to, but i didn't see any slivers of garlic (*tear); ah well, it was still the palate cleaner I craved. Mapo tofu here is extra fiery but that's the way I like it. Spicy fish here reminds me more of Asia cafe in the glory days when it was higher quality and lots of it: more fish here, not as spicy but clean not greasy flavors. Branching out, we got shredded pork in garlic sauce, a vegetable and minced pork meddley and salt and pepper squid (though I have yet to ever have something salt and pepper and not enjoy it :]). Last item was pork belly in garlic sauce, which was my favorite: cold boiled pork belly with chili oil and garlic sauce: its like Schezuan house's except tamer on the heat and a lot more pork belly. The combination of spicy, savory with the pork belly's large reserves of tender fat make it the an unforgettable experience. Rice of course is on the house. Also of note is that they serve boba here. The tea is fantastic (almond and honeydew are my favorites), but the pearls themselves fail to impress. I'd stick away from those unless you really like squashy tapioca and or exploding boba (though we might have gotten a bad batch as it was near closing). Out of the three Sichuanese children in Austin, I wouldn't hesitate to go to any of the three, but for those to compromise and get some of the best of all possible worlds, definitely come here. This place and Asia Cafe are the two premier Chinese restaurants in Austin. They totally trump Din Ho, Ho Ho, First Chinese BBQ, TJ's Seafood and all of the other well reviewed top Chinese establishments. The decor and table lay out are frankly terrible ... but you are here for the food. And if you want American Chinese (General Tso's Chicken or take out noodles) go to P F Changs. This is a palace for adventurous eaters. This is a place for all of the parts of the pig including the parts you can't even get at Barley Swine. This is where you go for Sea Cucumber and Frog Legs. And yes, their preparation of the parts of the pig and fish you usually eat are fine too. What is the difference between this place and Asia Cafe? Asia Cafe can be exquisite - or it can miss. A+A is always reliable - although does not always hit the first ecstatic taste peaks that Asia Cafe hits when it hits. Asia Cafe is blazingly hot - and the dominant flavor is often chili oil. A+A works off of a more restrained and subtle flavor pallette. Asia Cafe usually runs out of the exotic specials - but their normal food is so good that who the heck cares. A+A has the exotic specials in stock. Asia Cafe has a far nicer ambience than does A + A. (A + A really really really needs a redecoration and tables that are not in a strange size.) That said, I am always happy when I leave A+ A. I can be ecstatic when I leave Asia Cafe ... or I can be ... "boy that dish was a struggle." A + A is more reliable, Asia Cafe offers dangerous thrills. Between the two of them, why eat Chinese anywhere else? (Unless you want American Chinese which is a completely legitimate cuisine. In that case P F Changs or Bamboo Garden are perfectly respectable calls.) But for Chinese Chinese ... one of the big two definitely. read more

This place has some excellent Chinese food. It is authentic, delicious, and fresh. The decor and feel of the place leave a lot to be desired though. And the service... well, it's okay, but not too great. Every time I ask for some hot mustard you'd think that I'd asked them for ketchup (like the oddest condiment one could ever ask for in a Chinese place). Anyway, we usually get the twice-cooked fish, which is awesome (probably the best thing we order). I have had noodle dishes (good), the salt and pepper squid (pretty tasty), and some pork dish w/ hot peppers (yummy). If you don't expect good service and love Sichuan food, this place is good. They are not busy and you can get your food quickly. The rice is so-so, but the non-Americanized dishes are flavorful, and the spices will make your mouth sing. I love the combination of Sichuan peppercorns and whole dried red peppers. My favorite dish here is the stir fried frog legs. Other dishes are okay and similar to Asia Cafe down the road. Overall, this is a good place to get inexpensive Chinese food. read more

I dig this place. I've been here twice now, and I love the soups (both egg drop and hot and sour). Most recently, I tried the "salt and pepper fish fillet". It was a lot of food, and it was tasty. The seasoning blend reminded me of a similar dish I used to get at T&S Seafood (before they closed). I am sadly changing my rating for this place based on my last visit. And it's not based on the food. The food is fantastic. The shredded chicken with garlic sauce is delicious and the salt and pepper fish is outstanding. Like, seriously the best fried fish I've ever had. It's also not based on price or portion sizes which are both good. It's the experience of eating at A + A that is not so good. We arrived at a fairly busy time on a Friday night. The restaurant was indeed busy, but not crowded. There were plenty of empty tables and booths. On our first visit, we had been seated, given menus, and had our order taken. We quickly learned that that is not the norm for this place! This time we were shown a table and that was it. We realized that we would need to get menus, place our order at the counter, get our silverware, etc.... That was fine. No big deal. But it's not really clear that this is what's required, so it's a bit confusing to new patrons. So we placed our order and waited. We noticed that the place had been freshly painted (it still smelled a bit of paint) and looked much nicer than our first visit. We chatted. We got hungry. 30-40 minutes later, we got our appetizer. There were four of us at the table and it was eaten in less than 2 minutes. So, we waited some more. The table next to us (who arrived after us) started getting multiple dishes of food. I was starting to getting annoyed. We still waited. Another 30+ minutes went by, and one of our 3 entrees finally arrived along with only 2 of our 4 bowls of rice. We dispatched it pretty quickly because we were starving and it was delicious. Time passed. Finally, well over an hour after ordering, the rest of food arrived. It was great. We loved it. We would have loved to have gotten all of our entrees at the same time, however. And all of it in a more timely manner. The table behind us was having a similar experience. They did what we didn't do. They complained. The lady working the front (who, honestly, I can't say if she was nice or not. She seemed nice, but there was also an undertone of something...some exasperated "I don't give a shit! We're busy!" sort of tone or something) told them that they were busy and that was just how they did things in the kitchen (cooking/sending one thing at a time). It was a bit of an uncomfortable exchange. We finished our food and got up to leave. As we passed the same lady on the way out my husband, ever friendly, smiled and thanked her. And she said, "You've been watching us." I have no idea what the heck that meant. None of us did. We just smiled and headed to the car. It was a strange, frustrating experience. The food made up for it somewhat which is why I'm still giving A + A 3 stars. I will probably go back again. Hopefully to have a less annoying experience and just have awesome, awesome food. read more

Really empty on a Wednesday night and it shouldn't have been. This place is delicious! We ordered a lot and shared. I can say the curry rice was the best, great orange chicken, and huge homemade pan fried dumplings. Add a little salt to the wonton soup and it is great. Make sure you get a side of chilly oil. It begins with a dated and modest dining room. The tables and booths very typical of a low end strip center Asian restaurant, which A+A is also typical. The dinner menu is extensive, but the lunch menu is very narrow. As usual you choose the main dish, soup (hot and sour and egg drop only) with egg roll. Quickly out comes the hot and sour and it is very hot and fabulous with a nice spicy kick. Now we are excited. Even more quickly while we are still nursing our soup, out comes the main dish and it is massive. (That would be the last we see of our server for quite some time.) The egg roll crust is very thick and doughy. The main dishes are okay but the sauce to the pork garlic is very thick. This "spicy" dish is far from it with no texture and very little flavor. The fried rice is flavorless and obviously prepared some time ago. My wife thought the curry chicken was just okay. Well four tables later and a take out order, and our server is well behind. Bowls and dirty dishes sit in front of us for over 30 minutes as we wait for our check. Our conclusion, we won't be back. Gotta go, chinese food you know. read more

Not unpleasant, but not pleasant either. Before eating here I read a few Yelp reviews, both the bad and good, but decided to give A+A a chance anyways. The restaurant wasn't busy at all so the service was quick. Pricing was fairly decent, under $10 per person for the lunch special. The food was fresh and that's about all I can say about the positives of A+A. The waitress took mine and my father's order by memory and delivered it to the chef. One of the dishes we received back was wrong and had chicken rather than beef. Now given that I've worked in food service for some time, I'd say that I'm pretty understanding and forgiving about mistakes regarding orders because things just happen sometimes, but the main reason I most likely would not return to A+A is their customer service. If any mistake has been made by the business, an automatic response by the staff should be, "I apologize for my mistake, may I get you another plate/drink/etc." The response I received when I notified the waitress about the mistake was, "But can you still eat it?". This definitely rubbed me the wrong way. I mean I can eat anything, but it's not what I ordered. In the end I paid for the incorrect plate at a discounted price (because I touched it) and full price for the food I ordered. read more

Went for lunch mid afternoon, so was not real busy. Had the Crispy Duck, eggrolls and Combination fried rice. The duck was perfect, and came with sliced carrots, broccoli crowns, snow peas, water chestnuts, and an interesting flat thin mushroom. The egg rolls were not 80% cabbage, as I find in most Asian restaurants. Lot's of ground pork. The mustard and sweet-sour sauces appeared to be homemade, and had nice flavor. The Combo Fried rice had shrimp, chicken and pork, with ample egg, and green onion and white onion pieces. You can taste a well seasoned wok flavor, and was not greasy.
