Really good food, affordable prices, no wait. I'm a big fan of this place for lunch. You get a ton of food for very little money. Most dishes are served family style so it is best to bring a group, get a variety of items, and share. Get the table with a lazy Susan in the middle to make it easy to pass everything around. The place is almost always deserted, for some reason I don't understand.The food is almost identical in selection and quality to Asia Cafe, which is always packed at lunch. I often wonder how they stay in business without more customers, but it is nice that there is never a wait. The only con I can think of is that they don't take Amex and the waiters don't always know a whole lot of English, but you can usually get your point across without much trouble. The waitress who served our table was friendly, however, she was very short-handed. So we took ourselves hot tea, water, napkins, silverwares, and to go boxes. We ordered the beef noodle soup, fried noodle (lo mein) with shrimps, and Singaporean fried rice noodle. All of them tasted kind of salty for us. Especially the Singaporean fried rice noodle- they didn't blend the noodle well so some noodles especially the bottom ones tasted very salty. I really wanted to like A+A, especially after all of the Eater Austin love that was heaped on it earlier this year. Unfortunately, our dinner was not what foodie dreams are made of. We kept things simple by ordering sesame chicken, my husband's standard dish, and asking for a recommendation from the very friendly owner for a second item. She waxed on about the delicious twice cooked pork, so we followed her suggestion. The food arrived within 5 minutes of ordering, which seemed suspiciously fast. It was piping hot, so perhaps the kitchen was quiet and they were able to crank through our order quickly. I appreciated that the sesame chicken was white meat that was still m-o-i-s-t (I have a strong aversion to that word, so it pains me to even spell it!), but it tasted decidedly like a very mild orange chicken with a smattering of sesame seeds on top. The twice cooked pork was interesting. Some bites were pretty tender and tasty while others felt like we were gnawing on pork jerky. Unfortunately, the pork was swimming in oil. I know that Chinese food isn't exactly healthy, but we didn't need a pool of grease to remind us. Needless to say, I had a few bites but left the rest untouched. Perhaps we misordered and need to return with someone who knows their menu backward and forward, but for now we'll head to our old standby Asia Cafe when we have another hankering for Chinese food. read more

Don't let the bad reviews stop you from trying A+A out. We always take visiting friends and fam here (before the pandemic and before the location change), and they love it! Ambience - came in during the mid and they had half the store closed down with lights off and then a lighted smaller area for guests. The decor is pretty standard red and black painting with lots of Asian sculptures and paintings. At the plate where they place orders there is a really cool menu board made up of nothing but pictures. Which is nice since most Asian places don't have descriptions. Menu - Standard menu that you would find anywhere else with all the main favorites. There was a lot more menu items on this menu that I have never seen so that was nice. The menu is some white paper with black ink of the names of all the items. Pretty solid menu with some interesting names items and all the classics Service - i was greeted by an older Asian lady who told me to sit anywhere I like and she brought me a menu. I then see 2 older Asian gentlemen come from the dark side of the store wearing Jean shorts and regular tshirts. These guys are super laid back, hell yeah. They were obviously the cooks who were napping while waiting for something to do. My server was really sweet and had a some what typical Asian accent. I thought nothing of it till I heard her on the phone talking perfect English in a normal accent. I was like wtf just happened. Was this intentional to make it more authentic? Lol idk, but it was pretty funny. Anywho, service was good which I would hope so since I was the only one inside. Food - I ordered the Zhong dumplings and Ching Chong chicken. Having no idea what that was i was excited to see what i get. The dumplings i got were awesome. The dumplings were huge, most places they are pretty small, but these were nice and plump. They are basically steamed dumplings with hot chili oil. The stuffings in the dumplings had a nice meaty flavor and were delicious. With the oil added I made for a nice spicy blend. My chicken was definitely not what I expected but that's ok. It was a huge plate of fried chicken pieces with thai chilies and hot oil all mounded together on a single plate served with a side of rice. Wow, their portion sizes are ridiculous. I love leftovers thou. So the chicken was something I did not expect. The seasonings and batter blend were absolutely delicious. I mean, this fried chicken could easily compete in a chicken fry contest. The blend of spices and the chicken were so good. Since it was made fresh and piping hot, the physical heat made the actual spice level go way up. The chicken was nice and tender and had a great flavor. I decided to put some soy on it and it was a great idea. The saltiness with the spices made the dish even better. Salty, spicy and yummy. I was completely blown away by this dish. I obviously couldn't eat all of the food so I got to enjoy it twice. So overall the food was great and the portion sizes were even better. For 15 smackers I definitely got my money's worth. Overall - glad I stumbled in here. The store is nice and clean, the service is good and the menu is very solid. The food I got was definitely not what I expected. Best old school (non fusion) Asian food in Austin, hands down. We had salt and pepper shrimp, combo lo mein, beef & broccoli and egg rolls. Everything was great quality, cooked perfectly, with fast and friendly service. We will be back, even though it's on the other side of town for us. Totally worth the drive. Asia Cafe is easily my favorite Chinese restaurant in Austin and it just so happens to be in my neighborhood. A+A is a great substitute, especially when needing delivery. According to a friend, the owners of both restaurants are the same or related, though I haven't confirmed. The food is delicious. Never overly salted, which can often happen at Chinese restaurants. They always seem to hit upon the right mix of ingredients. Getting your order in can sometimes be very slow, even with not many diners there. I do like that they bring your food out hot, as it's competed. Service is always friendly and warm. It's definitely a dive, but that's exactly the kind of places I love, especially when ethnic people frequent it. read more

Do you like Kung Pao, General Tso, Sesame, Sweet and Sour, or other American types of Chinese food? Awesome, but don't come here. This ain't Panda Express and if you take the effort to come to a restaurant that specializes in Sichuan food (as indicated by the name) and order any of the above listed foods...you've already failed. If you appreciate authentic, no excuses, not made for American palates Sichuan food...you've made a wise decision in coming here. There are number of great dishes ranging with a variety of protein choices from frog to lamb. There are a few standouts for me, but my absolute favorite is Dry Pot anything. The Dry Pot is a generously sized portion of your chosen protein (my faves are rabbit or lamb) with a moderate amount of vegetables and copious amounts of dried chiles and mouth numbing Sichuan peppercorns. Service has always been casual and friendly. They are happy to help the uninitiated navigate the menu. Prices are...well, they're cheap. Portions can easily food 2-3 people with normal appetites. I am well trained in the art of mastication and I have to take home half of my portions on a regular basis. So, if you want something that breaks the humdrum of Americanized Chinese food, do yourself a solid and stop in at A+A. ...and be a little adventurous. read more

My favorite Chinese Restaurant in Austin. I'm not a big fan of Americanized Chinese Food. Fried unidentified chunks of meet in a goopy syrupy sauce, no thanks. Maybe a couple times a year, but it's just not my thing. I couldn't tell you much of nothing about Sichuan cooking version other Chinese varieties and methods. One day, I'll learn. But for now, I'll take great pleasure in dining at A+A. So far, everything I've ordered has been a well crafted, flavorful success. First, grab some Zhong dumplings. Miles ahead of the overly chewy lumps with that odd B.O. smell you find at places that Kevin Arnold used to deliver for. The soft dough is similar to what I associate with chicken and dumplings, with a tender meatball inside. Excellent. I could eat these things until I puked, then have a couple more. Pork with Flower Chive is seemingly simple, but there is an underlying complexity that I find fascinating. Rich but not too heavy with a slight hint citrus and even floral notes. Absolutely delicious. The Beef in Cumin Sauce is my newest favorite. If you handed it to me out of context, I'd think it was Latin American in origin. Tender strips of beef with a spicy cumin sauce and sauteed cabbage. Not to hot,but prickly on the tongue. Also? The leftovers are fantastic the next day as tacos on corn tortillas with a little homemade slaw (olive oil, red wine or apple cider vinegar, cabbage). Which brings me to the next part. Portions are generous. Entrees could easily feed two people. We often take half the order home in go boxes. read more

So in the last six months, I have discovered TWO actually authentic Chinese restaurants. Asia Cafe and A+A Sichaun Garden. Sadly, both are located inconveniently north for me, but hey, it's a nice treat. This is pretty much the experience you'll get from a little place in Dengfeng or an average what-we-would-call-a-cafe in a bigger city like Beijing (Elise K is right on the money). You walk up to the counter, tell them here or to-go, order, and sit down. It's pretty self-serve, almost cafeteria style - grab your own canned or bottled beverage, and do shit yourself. What, you think they run a restaurant so they can bring you a Coke, gweilo? No, they do it to cook! Anyway, the menu is extensive, and those looking for Americanized Chinese food will find a bit of familiarity; beef with vegetables is present, as is orange chicken and General Tso's, and you'll even find *shudder* sweet and sour pork. However, the standouts really are the more unusual dishes (for those not used to authentic Szechuan cooking) - subtleties like the squid with black bean sauce, for example (which is effing excellent). Lots of the daily specials - and more "exotic" (to continental American tastes, anyway) - are up on the wall above the counter, with pictures and prices. If you can push your Panda Express palette a little bit, I'd really recommend a clay pot or maybe the crispy whole fish (watch out for the bones). Prices are a little higher than I'm used to for dinner (average is probably $9.75 for a dish), but the portions are large, and there's lots of $6.99 lunch items. Soda and drinks are by the individual can or bottle, and you'll get charged for every refill, so watch for that. I don't think there's booze, but it was lunch on a Monday so I didn't look. A+A is worth the trek north when you're craving Sichuan. The food is not quite as good as Asia Cafe, but it's never as long of a wait or as crowded, and I enjoy the atmosphere of a quiet restaurant, so I usually pick A+A over Asia Cafe. I'll never understand people who go to Chinese restaurants, order something Americanized like sesame chicken, and wonder why it's not good. You're at a Sichuan restaurant for cryin' out loud; order something Sichuan. If you're not a fan of spicy, you might as well go somewhere else. They can tone down the spicy dishes for you, and of course not EVERY dish is hot, but the whole point of the style is that it's bold and spicy. A few basics if you're completely lost: - Eggplant with Garlic Sauce - Mango [chicken, shrimp, etc.] - Salt and Pepper [pork, shrimp, etc.] - Mustard greens [w/ bean curd, pork, etc.] - Mapo Tofu - Pretty much anything and everything. Some reviews have complained about the service, but it has always been extremely friendly, fast, and competent when I go. (I've always been for dinner service, never lunch) I have hit no language barrier. I have only experienced deliciousness and the accompanying bliss of a well-deserved food high. read more

We decided to lunch here because - amazingly - this restaurant is No. 1 on a list of Best Chinese restaurants in Austin. (Which says something about Yelpers or about the quality of Chinese restaurants in Austin!:) First test - for appetizers, we ordered the potstickers. An authentic Sichuan restaurant does potstickers 2 ways - pan fried or steamed. What came out of the kitchen were doughy, chew almost gnocchi-like dumplings with a hard core of filling, while the "pan fried" ones were actually deep fried and heavy. Our lunches were OK. I would say a Panda Express offers more consistency and quality than what we ate here. A stir fried beef and broccoli was not stir fried - more like it was flash-deep-fried in oil. The cooking was one step above deep fried bobo balls. A shrimp dish looked and tasted as if it was cooked in the same oil from the beef dish. There are better restaurants in Chinatown on Lamar, Shanghai as well as Din Ho. And Pao's in Lakeway is definitely worth the drive. read more

I've only made one trip, but A+A is the best Chinese I've had in Austin. The portions are very generous, so we thought we wouldn't make a dent in it. But then a strange thing happened: we could NOT stop eating. Miraculously, we ended up with very little food left - almost as if we went into a dining trance. We had to force ourselves to finally put our chopsticks down because the restaurant was closing and we were the last patrons left. Everything was just so tasty, and because the food isn't heavy, you never feel uncomfortably full. Recommendations: the ma po tofu and pork with flower chive. The ma po tofu could have been a little spicier, so we will ask for extra heat next time (but it was still pleasantly spicy). The tofu itself was perfectly done and very flavorful. The garlic in the pork, while just a small component, was fantastic - we ate some of it separately out of the dish to enjoy its flavor. We'll definitely be going back soon. read more

We ate at A + A Sichuan Garden earlier in the week and were very impressed. Their menu features some of the standard dishes you typically see on Chinese Food menus, but also features a lot of things you don't normally see. For our visit we didn't get too adventurous. We went with the Zhong Dumplings, Kung Pao Chicken and General Tso's Chicken. The prices were very reasonable. There was 8 full sized dumplings and they were only $4.99. I see them in other places for $2-3 more. The portions were very large, but food quality didn't suffer. The General Tso's chicken was the best I've had in years. The pieces of chicken were battered in lotus flour and had that nice, soft crunch on the outside, but were moist and tender inside. The sauce was thick, tangy, sweet and a bit spicy, but not too much of any of those qualities. Very good. The Kung Pao Chicken was equally good, very garlicky, but I like that. So it was a little bit strange that my husband and I were the only ones eating at A+A, but it was the night after Thanksgiving, and I guess the rest of Austin was at home trying to get through pounds of leftover Turkey. This place is apparently a reliably good Chinese restaurant. We ordered vegetable fried rice with egg, a plate of fried dumplings, and cumin beef. The food didn't take long to arrive at our table and everything tasted good. As you would (or should) expect from a Sichuan restaurant, the beef was spicy! I was served the spoiled beef for the lunch special Hunan Beef and darken deep fry egg roll. First I complained the egg roll about the color (either re-fry or oil not fresh) , the server also the owner would not replace the egg roll. I ate few piece of beef, I am 100% sure the meat is spoiled and the server tasted tiny piece and said it's good meat. I left most my meal untouched. I should have taken the meal back and reported the health department. The owner refused any discount of my meal. I did not think about taking the bad meal home for the evidence of reporting to health department. I will not go back this restaurant again. This is my first review on Yelp. read more

So I had to find a new Chinese place close to the new casa. Read the reviews and decided to give this place a try. Hmm is this a restaurant or take out place? So I walk in and I hear from somewhere "Help you?" I look around the place and spot a lady behind the counter. Then after I walk up she hands me a menu then tells me to sit somewhere then come back to the counter to order. Umm ok???? So I ordered eggrolls, won ton soup, Hunan Beef. They have no fountain sodas(not a surprise in a Chinese restaurant) but no Ice Tea? Oh they have hot water you can stick a tea bag in (Never seen that before in a Chinese restaurant). So $1.35 can, CAN of Pepsi. Why is there a tip line on the receipt? Tips are for service. So far it appears to be the fast food version of Chinese. You have to get your own silverware and hot water. To the reviewer who said she liked that, explain why that's a good thing again. Why would I tip before I get my food? How do I know how much to tip? So I decided the safety of my food rides on this so I tip the standard 20%. Not to worry they earned that money after I left. More on that later I told you what I ordered so you can better picture me being served. Cook comes out of the kitchen with my eggrolls. Cook goes back to kitchen. Cook comes right back out with my Hunan Beef. Cook goes back into kitchen. Can you guess what's coming next? If you said cook brings my soup you'd be wrong. So I slide my entree across the table to wait for my soup. The lady behind the counter comes over to my table to see what's wrong. Because she watches me the whole time I'm there. That was a little uncomfortable. I tell her nothing I'm just waiting for my soup. She begins to explain that the soup takes longer to prepare. What???? So I explain that soup comes first and please take back everything back until after I get my soup. I get my soup. Now it is one big bowl of soup I'll give that to them. That's where the good things end. I had to dump soy sauce in there to give it some taste. The lady brings my eggrolls back. One of them of course was deep fried too long. And finally I asked her for my entree back. Now at the least I would have expected it to have been sitting under a heat lamp. Alas I was wrong. I have nothing really good or bad to say about this dish as I was being adventurous and ordering something new. I can tell you this dish was not spicy as advertised. So I get a togo box near the silverware. But I have to ask for a container for my left over soup. I told you it was a big bowl. The lady brings me a styrofoam cup. Why do you have styrofoam cups? You don't have drinks to put in there. So now I keep imagining the delivery fiascos with spilled soup all over their driver's car. Haha. Now picture me trying to pour soup out of this huge bowl into this cup. And that's how she earned her tip. Haha Needless to say the search for a new Chinese food place continues.... As others have mentioned, A+A Sichuan is basically a clone of Asia Cafe. This means A+A offers a staggering selection of Sichuan-style entrees not familiar to the average Western palate. There is a heavy emphasis on spicy foods, and also intestines. Innards notwithstanding, you can also find more mildly-flavored items, as well as things not made out of organ meats. As an additional bonus, A+A (and Asia Cafe) uses a counter-order model instead of a waiter that comes to your table, so you spend much less on tip, and you can refill your drink as you please. Where A+A differs from Asia Cafe is the superior service and environment. Asia Cafe is popular enough so that it's usually hopping at all hours. At AC, you have to wait not only for your food, but also in line to order your food, which can add up to over 30 minutes. A+A, by contrast, is still relatively unknown, so you can order immediately and receive your piping-hot meal within a few minutes. Also, A+A is more pleasantly decorated compared to the drab, utilitarian Asia Cafe. Finally, although A+A's food is almost identical to Asia Cafe's, some dishes are slightly better-executed. For example, the ma-po tofu is laden with fiery, tingly Sichuan peppercorns just like AC's, but is less drenched in oil. Based on the crowds I've seen, A+A hasn't been "discovered" yet due to its remote location near 183 and Anderson Mill. That's a shame in light of the unique, delicious food and prompt service. As a long-time fan of Asia Market Cafe, I was excited to try A+A when I heard that it was opened with the old chef from Asia Market. The menu is almost identical, so I knew right away what to order. We had the garlic green beans, the pork with flower chive and the Zhong dumplings. We also got egg rolls because it's now a goal to find the kind of egg rolls that The Man and I both like in Austin (you know, old school with bubbly, doughy wrappers and yummy, porky, cabbagey, sprouty insides?). The egg rolls were the closest we've found so far in Austin, but still not quite right, but I digress, you don't come to A+A for egg rolls. Everything we ate was top notch and reminiscent of my first meal at Asia Market. Hunger meets Anger - Worst combo! I drove 25 mins to check this place out based on all the reviews from yelp. I ended up getting a Hot & Spicy Jumbo Shrimp and my wife ordered Vegetable Lo Mein. When we reached home, I got the table all ready and I have never been so pumped to try a new Chinese restaurant. After opening the lid, the steam coming from the beautiful shrimp has never been so appealing. Yet as they say looks can be very deceiving, indeed this was one of those times. I feel they did accidentally give me the shrimp with garlic sauce instead of what I ordered. It was so bad, that I took it upon myself to put some sriracha sauce to try and make it a little bit more flavorful before I threw it away. Yet I tried and tried, and it was still terrible. I felt bad throwing away all that food. I wouldn't even give this food to the homeless. I did try my wife's Lo Mein and it was awful. I would consider myself a foodie. I love trying new cuisines. Coming from an Indian ethnic background, I would consider I have various taste buds. I feel this review could've been worse if I wrote this on an empty stomach. We came here on a whim one day after having a short un-satisfying stint at Taco Cabana. We were still hungry and were craving Chinese food. The place was pretty empty on a week day so we got pretty good service. We ordered one entree - the Pork with Garlic sauce and it was more than enough to share! What was nice was that it came with lots of veggies and we had enough to have several more meals when we brought it home. The pork was pretty fatty and the sauce was greasy but the flavor was decent. This is definitely a good value for your buck but it wasn't the best thing I'd ever had. Atmosphere: I dunno what the ^@$% is happening inside this restaurant lol. It's very odd. They have some asian inspired things strung about, but the chairs and tables look more befitting of a Cheddars than an asian restaurant. They have a fish tank with like 2 fish.....the layout is odd and seems like half the restaurant isn't even used. Service: Awful. I've only been here the one time but the service was awful. They brought out everyone's dishes out at different times which is a pet peeve of mine when dining out. It was slow. My boyfriend was about 10 minutes into his meal and my roommate was about 5 minutes into his before I even saw my food. Also slow on the refills. Food: I had high hopes because people raved about this place since it's being run [or owned?] by the same people that did the original Asia Cafe [which I didn't like either, go figure]. Since most of their dishes are hot or spicy, I was a bit limited as to what I could get, so I lamed out and got the Sesame Chicken. Wow...it was the same quality as a low grade asian restaurant....think Panda Express. The sauce was very very strong, could hardly taste the chicken. The chicken was chewy and full of fail. I ate about 5 pieces of the sesame chicken when i decided to stop trying to fool myself into thinking it was my imagination at how blah the experience was. Overall: I will never go here again. This place is great. I mostly consider this identical to Asia Cafe. They are just down the road from each other and both serve authentic Chinese food. I would go to whichever restaurant is closer to you. Since it is newer it is currently cleaner than Asia Cafe which is a big plus since you get dirty bowls and silverware at both but that's a small price to pay for the authentic food. read more

Yesterday we decided to order from this place: mostly because they were one of the few places open on the 4th of July. First of all, the person answering the phone spoke so little English we couldn't order unless we read the numbers off the menu. Now, don't get me wrong: ESL is usually a good sign when ordering non-American cuisine, but SOMEONE in your restaurant needs to speak enough English they can operate with customers. This, of course, meant you couldn't customize your order AT ALL, because unless you said the number on the menu, they didn't know what you wanted to order. Also, we live in a new subdivision in Austin (we just moved in about a week ago), and we KNOW our street isn't on all GPS services yet. So we tried to tell them the cross street we lived on incase our exact street didn't come up on their delivery GPS. Well, you can imagine if they can't understand "Shrimp & Scallops in Garlic Sauce" they aren't going to understand directions. But we checked Google and out house was showing up, so we hoped for the best. We were told it would be about 45 minutes. And hour and 15 minutes later, we called, fully expecting the driver to be lost. But no, out food hadn't even left the restaurant yet! Really? This was a relatively small order, too. About another half-hour later we get a call, and of course they can't find us. But once again, we can't TELL THEM where we are, because they couldn't speak to us at all in English. Literally, they told us because we weren't showing up on their GPS we HAD TO COME INTO THE RESTAURANT AND PICK UP OUR FOOD if we wanted it. Needless to say, we told them to shove it and asked for our money back. Which the lady answering the phones didn't know how to do. She literally asked ME how she was supposed to reverse the charge on our card. She must have eventually talked to her manager or something, because she had to call back and get our card number to them. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Don't go for Hot Pot! We love hot pot, but there are much better options in town. - Way too much MSG, I was still thirsty 2 hours after dinner, and that rarely happens to me - The price of the hot pot on the website is $29.50, which is incorrect. I was misled by the price online only to find that they have raised the price to $38.50 when I arrived at the restaurant. The food you get is not worth the increased price. - I was given beef that's pink in color, treated with baking soda. You only do this to subpar beef to make it tender but it ruins the texture and the taste of the beef. This is never acceptable beef for hot pot. For $40, I would expect better quality beef than this. I tried hot pot at SHABU and thought it was quite good but a bit pricy, but now that we've had hot pot here, we are going back to SHABU next time. For a bit more, you get much better quality meat and you can order exactly what you want instead of getting a combo of meat and vegetables that you might not like. I was very excited when I went and I felt cheated on both price and quality when I left, so hopefully others won't make the same mistake I did by going there for hot pot. read more

Ordered spicy wanton and Taiwan fried noodles. Taken surprise by the former since I expect dry or only spicy oil instead of soup based. But loved the Mala as it numbs my tongue. Yummy. Noodles was average. Overall I can't finished my food. read more
