What a surprise. We were on the road and needed to stop off for lunch. We usually go for the diners/ma and pa places. I saw we were going by an A&W and decided to give it a try and my husband was so impressed with the food. We do stop by every time we drive through town to get a growler of root beer. Note: We stopped by on a road trip and got our growler (glass jug) filled and our cap was missing. They found a plastic milk jug cap that worked. Apparently they do not sell the glass jugs for refill anymore but they will fill your container. Again we had burgers (double cheese and Swiss/mushroom along with coney dog, fries and onion rings. I love the summer hours, so I can enjoy the warmth and fresh air from the breeze while sitting outside at the drive-in Each item on the menu are very tasty and excellent. My favorite snacks are "melt in my mouth" cheese curds and the onion rings that are lightly deep-fried and crispy. I love washing it all down with my Root Beer Cream Freeze! read more

So, so good! Service was wonderful, the runners may be young but they do not slack when it comes to customer service. I've never been to an A&W where you pull in and order (like Sonic). This was a fun stop for an out of towner! I even got to learn how your food is delivered to your rolled-down window, how fun! The root beer floats are quite literally the best, especially paired with cheese curds. The curds are easily on my top 2 favorites of all time. My coney dog was okay, I think they slacked on the type of cheese they used but it was still good. Happy we stopped here for dinner. read more

Service was awful! After seeing many others get waited on and served we asked for manager. They completely forgot or order! We asked for manager and we're told there wasn't any. We asked for refund and we're told that was not there policy. We had waited over 35 min along with another couple who had waited longer and we only offered a 10% discount on our next visit! Everything is done the old fashioned way! Car hops the root beer is made in house. It's delicious and who can say no to a frosty mug. The onion rings are off the hook! I always grab a bacon cheeseburger with rings and a root beer. The service is some of the best in the fast food industry. We stopped here after a day at Jordan Lake, thinking it would be cool to eat at a drive -in to complete the experience. The three of us ordered the #6 cheeseburger combo, upgraded fries to cheese curds, and got a root beer float instead of just an A&W root beer thst came with the, mini corn dogs & fries, and the #7 double burger combo. The staff was very friendly and efficient with taking our orders. The orders arrived shortly thereafter. The root beer float was a frosty treat, bubbly root beer topped with a soft swirl of ice cream. The fries were comparable to a small size fries from a fast food chain. The corn dogs tasted like they had been in the freezer for too long, the burger patties also tasted like old, stale, mystery meat. The burgers were completely unremarkable. It contained cheese that had no form, as the liquid tan off of the burger, two pickles, and ketchup. To summarize: AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!! WE GOT FOOD POISONING that night and felt miserable to say the least. If you must go, stick with the chiller menu and fries, skip everything else because you will get sick! read more

I had the Papa Burger with cheese curds- it was awesome! It was clean and the staff was friendly. I liked drinking the root beer float out of a glass mug. It is a drive-in, but there are also tables outside. The restaurant is right next to the Wisconsin river. It is worth it to walk across the street and walk along the levy after you eat! read more

This A&W is the best. It doesn't even compare to any other ones. They do something that no one else does with their floats and root beer. You can't go through portage without going to the A&W. It is so good that it should be on the Drive diner & Dives TV show. It is so good that I can't go to any other A&W anywhere. The customer service is awesome and the Owners are fantastic. We stopped on a Fri at 12:30 and they were very busy. It's a traditional A&W drive in, so you order in your car or on the patio. Because they were so busy, it took a while to get our food, but when they brought it out, it was hot and very good. Service gals were very efficient and pleasant. I used to go here as a child in the 80s. All these years later, the Root Beer Stand is still there! I've never had their food, but the root beer off the tap is unbelievably good. And now they have root beer soft serve *all the time*! Natives remember getting a gallon of root beer and a dollar bag from the Popcorn Stand--no more Popcorn Man, but the root beer and ice cream here is still the greatest thing around. read more

I'm a local and have eaten here a number of times. The service is always awesome. The food is good fast food. I like their cheese curds better than Culver's (and I like Culver's!) And how many places around can you eat as a drive in? The experience alone for the kids is worth it, but I've always found the food decent as well. read more
