My wife and I hired A SMART MOVE for our family relocation after receiving explicit verbal and written estimates from their sales rep, Tony. We even walked through our entire home on FaceTime to show them every item, including our kids' cribs and a Murphy bed, which they assured us they would assemble. The actual move day was an absolute disaster: Unannounced & Fraudulent Charges: They hit us with thousands in undisclosed "Double Drive Time" and transit labor fees. The crew spent nearly 4 hours stuck in traffic and pulled over by law enforcement, and they billed us for all of it. Operations Coordinator LJ admitted on a recorded line that these travel fees were omitted from our initial disclosures, yet management refused to fix the bill. Post-Move Portal Editing: Once we raised a dispute, the company retroactively edited their dynamic online portal to add "Double Drive Time" language that wasn't there when we signed. Unfinished Job & Abandoned Belongings: The crew walked off the job, leaving our children's cribs incorrectly put together in the wrong rooms, recliner chairs unfinished, and our Murphy bed in pieces on the floor. No-Showed After Promising a Fix: They gave us a written promise to return on Friday at 2:00 PM to finish assembling our furniture, then completely ghosted us, leaving us without beds for our young kids over the weekend. *edit 4/18 - The company was quick to reply to my review suggesting that I reach out to customer service. I did, and got an email back from COO Hayden Curtis. I was told that even though I was proactive about the challenges at the destination, the move and charges are what they are. I wished them the best, and hopefully my negative review remains an outlier.* I want to start by saying that I explained to A Smart Move that I would be leaving a poor review based on my experience with their pricing. I was told that they understood and would share my feedback internally. I was quoted just under $2k for a 3 bedroom move 5 miles (about 15min drive) away. The destination address is on a steep hill, and I made sure to send pictures and ask questions before the move. I was told that it would be no problem at all. The move was rough. They started at 8am and were loaded by around 1pm. At 2pm (includes a lunch break) they arrived at the destination and decided on the spot not to use the driveway and to cart my items up the steep driveway by hand. It ran long, and I was told around 4pm that they would be calling an extra two people to help at a cost of $135/hr. I was told I did not have a choice in this. They arrived at 4:30pm, and we were all finished at 5:10pm. So, doing the math, we had $2,000 for the move, $135 x 2 which we will round up to $300, and I added insurance the day before for $300. Our total due should be roughly $2,600, minus the $200 deposit I already gave them, for $2,400. The evening of the move they attempted to charge me $4,109.58, which was luckily declined. Over the following day or two I had several calls with them. They explained that they were already discounting the rate, and that the weight of items moved was higher than their initial estimate and made more work. I get that estimates can be wrong, but they actually moved LESS items than what was estimated due to me doing numerous van loads before move day. Additionally, at the destination, all I asked them to do was put the furniture in the correct rooms and leave the boxes outside the garage door for me to put away. Anyway, at the end of the day, I ended up paying a total of $3,312.78. Not including the insurance costs, that's just over a grand in additional fees, or an added 50% of the total cost to move. The excess really stretched us financially. I charged it to a credit card only to be told that there would be additional fees now for credit card usage. This was right after we got a $25 credit for having to clean up trash that they left in my front yard. We didn't even mention that the bathroom in our new place was peed all over, which was a delight to clean. My wife and I have mobility issues, so we really needed the help on this move, and it was incredibly frustrating to have this experience. All of this said, the movers themselves worked extremely hard. We bought them lunch between the loading/unloading, offered water throughout the day, and tipped them in cash. read more

Undisclosed Double Drive Time (DDT) is illegal, not a "miscommunication." California regulation requires DDT to be explicitly disclosed in the contract prior to the move. Billed DDT wasn't a clarity issue--it was an undisclosed fee. Operations Coordinator LJ explicitly admitted on a recorded call on July 8 that this fee was omitted from our disclosures. 2. Conveniently Omitting the 4-Hour Delay: The company completely ignored why the move took extra time: their crew spent nearly 4 hours stuck in traffic and pulled over by law enforcement. Attempting to bill clients hourly for carrier transit delays and police stops is unacceptable. 3. "Gesture of Goodwill" vs. Abandoned Job: Assembling furniture we paid to have assembled isn't a "gesture of goodwill"--it is fulfilling a contract. The crew walked off-site leaving a Murphy bed in pieces on the floor and cribs assembled incorrectly in the wrong rooms. They only returned on July 16 to finish the job after an official state regulatory complaint was filed. 4. Billed Labor for Their Own Drywall Damage: They also failed to address that their crew spent billable moving hours patching drywall damage they caused to our walls, charging us hourly rates for their own mistake. 5. Dynamic Portal Alterations: Updating text on a dynamic online client portal post-move after a dispute begins is not standard accounting--it is altering records after the fact. 6. Misleading "Walkthrough" Claims: Saying "we are leaving" as the crew packs up to walk out the door is NOT a final walkthrough or an approval of completed work. Claiming we signed off on abandoned, half-assembled furniture in the wrong rooms is simply untrue. WARNING TO FUTURE CUSTOMERS: Be aware that even if you complete a full video walkthrough of every single item in your home prior to booking, this company will severely underestimate the hours required. Despite their marketing promise to "Calm Your Chaos," they created nothing but challenges from start to finish. The Good: The San Diego pickup crew worked hard, and our driver Shaun was communicative and professional. The Bad - Everything Else: Delivery Day Disaster: The Texas delivery team arrived 3 hours late. We received only two text updates well after they were already behind schedule. When I was told to start calling the crew myself to get updates, I knew we were in trouble. Understaffed and Unprepared: Despite our contract specifying 6 team members, only 5 showed up - including two extremely young, inexperienced workers who couldn't handle basic tasks. My husband and I ended up moving our own furniture and reassembling pieces ourselves because the crew was so ineffective. Significant Damage: They damaged an antique desk (that we were told they would treat with ultimate care), knocked a ceiling fan from its mount (exposing dangerous wires), gouged our stairwell, and broke an electrical outlet cover. Multiple smaller items were also damaged. Dishonest Claims Process: The real nightmare began with the claims process. After waiting nearly 4 months, and spending countless hours on documentation, they offered $60 to repair an antique desk. They claimed they never received photos, The final settlement offer came with a gag order prohibiting any negative reviews. Broken Promises: Ultimately, the upfront promises turned to gaslighting and customer shaming once we moved in to the claims process. The Worst Part: A pattern of hoping customers will just accept subpar service and minimal compensation rather than speak up. The gag clause in their settlement agreement suggests this isn't isolated and may be why their current online review schema is so high. read more

I was present for the delivery with A Smart Move, and I was shocked. The delivery team arrived three hours late and immediately started rushing to make up time. I watched grown men running up and down stairs cases with belongings, which was both unprofessional and concerning. What was especially frustrating was the crew composition. The cost reflected professional movers but A Smart Move sent two teenagers who couldn't handle anything much heavier than a lamp. Even in my 70's I found myself carrying heavy furniture past these "professionals" who were standing around waiting for someone else to tell them what to do. The sloppiness reached a dangerous level when they knocked a ceiling fan loose from its mount while carrying furniture over their shoulders, exposing electrical wires. The crew member's casual response was "every move has some damages" - not exactly the accountability you expect from professionals. The whole experience was poorly managed from start to finish. The team seemed unprepared and overwhelmed. For what we paid, this was completely unacceptable. I'd strongly recommend looking elsewhere for your moving needs. read more

I hired Smart Move for a two-day move: packing art and fragile items on Friday and moving everything on Saturday. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. The movers did not complete packing on Friday because they were called away to another job. While the crew worked hard, there were frequent moments of unprofessionalism (foul language and inappropriate innuendos). Communication between movers was often inappropriate and made me feel uncomfortable, and on move day my lead mover disappeared for over three hours. When we arrived at the new home, two movers got into a physical altercation that resulted in injuries. Hayden, who was onsite, had to step in, separate the fight, and fire both movers. This left me with only two movers to unload two full trucks. More concerning, I discovered that personal items left in my nightstand drawer -- including passports and a bag -- went missing. I fully acknowledge it was my responsibility to secure those items beforehand, but I waited until every single box was unpacked, hoping they might turn up. They never did. I reached out to Hayden, who referred me to the insurance representative to file a claim, but that does not resolve the gravity of the situation. Overall, while a few individuals worked hard, the disorganization, lack of professionalism, inappropriate behavior, and missing personal items made this move extremely stressful. The movers were great! Hence the 3 star review. The estimate however kept going up and up and I kept finding random expenses. The final bill was 2k higher than the quote. They charge you for weight tickets (military) be advised. We had a few broken glasses and the packers missed three full cabinets. I left a tip for Chris and Mikey the movers were great if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have left a tip. Communication can be improved on the dates and estimated time of arrival and departure. I was referred to this company by a moving company I used about a month or so ago to help my 75-year-old Mom move from a 2-bedroom condo to a converted garage rental property. The move distance was only 2.6 miles down the street. My mom had acquired quite a lot in her time there so it took more than one day. The original moving company did not have enough people to extend the move an additional day so they referred me to a smart move, to move the remaining guest room materials and partial kitchen belongings. I was contacted multiple times by a variety of different phone numbers through calls and text, all stating that they worked for a smart move and fulfilled a different role in the moving process. Despite that confusion, after everything was scheduled and a very expensive quote was sent over, I reluctantly confirmed and paid the deposit because the move needed to get done within a couple days. I was told by one of the employees that the movers would show up at 8:00 am. Nobody showed up until around noon. The movers called me to ask which unit number it was even though that information was already provided. They walked in, looked around, and said they needed to go grab some supplies from their truck. A few minutes later I get a phone call from yet a different phone number claiming to be the CEO of the company, some lady with a British accent, who proceeded to insult my mom and stated that the movers were not prepared for so much stuff and stated that she thinks that my mom is a hoarder. She was not even on site. She stated that the movers did not bring enough supplies to handle such a difficult move and said they would need to reschedule and provide a different quote with more materials and additional personnel to handle such a hoarding situation. I asked her if she seriously thought it was cost effective to have two movers and a truck leave a site and have a different crew report on a different day. She stated that the movers had already left the site because they had other jobs to attend to. Nobody came back up to inform my mom of this change. I immediately asked her to cancel the move and refund my deposit and made it clear that it is not appropriate to speak to customers in the way that she did. She said thank you and hung up before I could even respond. What a massive disappointment. I would strongly not recommend using this company for any moving needs. Horrible customer service and the multi-number contact approach felt like a scam even though I did receive a refund within a couple days, only after being text by another different number. Zip ties made it hard for me to unpack. I understand why you use them. But being 5 minutes from my previous resident was frustrating.

I've used A SMART MOVE for my last two moves and I'll never go back to traditional boxes again. In the past, I've spent a lot of money on packing supplies (boxes, tape, etc.) only to turn around and recycle everything immediately after the move. It was wasteful. THIS is the better solution! A SMART MOVE delivers reusable plastic bins to your door, up to one week prior to your move. You have a total of 7 days to pack // unpack before the bins are picked up. They even come with dollies making it easy to stack and transport your belongings. The timeline helped me to unpack quickly (I don't know about you, but I've been known to wait up to a year to unpack the last few boxes in the corner of a room... just sayin' ;-). The bins come with cable ties and dry erase markers to label the outside. My movers knew exactly where to unload. Nice touch! Final note - Lindsay Curtis from A SMART MOVE in San Diego is the best! These are a must for your next move. The containers are durable, stackable and can hold a good amount. We ordered 35 for a 2BR 980sqf and probably could've used a few more. It's easy to order (reserve) online and pick your delivery date. Definitely worth the money as they're reasonably priced. What's also great, is you get to have them for a week giving you plenty of time to unpack but also giving you a little incentive to get the unpacking done. They pick up the containers and done. There's no hassle of building boxes or breaking down boxes. 100% worth it. read more

Bri, Ariana, Jose, Manny, and the other two folks who helped us with our pack and move did an excellent job - I would happily hire them again (forgetting the other two names but they all deserve kudos!). The crew was efficient, thorough, friendly, communicative, and careful with our items. I highly recommend obtaining your own materials (e.g. bubble wrap, paper, boxes), as the materials they provide come with quite mark-up, but we knew that in advance and were ok with paying for the convenience of using the provided materials. There was a little discrepancy between the proposed charges on the day of and our initial agreed upon minimum, but this was easily sorted out by calling Hayden, who was the very communicative manager I worked with. Just a minor inconvenience. It's also a little odd that they charge credit card fees (which add up depending on the size of your job!) but don't allow alternative forms of payment such as cash or check. read more

What I mean is, all the positives... well, you've probably heard them all. I really liked the process and the built in motivation to unpack. Only thing was, and it didn't bother me but perhaps would someone, they didn't schedule pick up of the boxes as they had thought. This lead to a delay in them picking up. Again, NOT a big deal, but I can imagine if you moved into a small place, and they're in your way, that might be bothersome. Generally, 4.5/5... rounding up to 5, because, come on... I HATE moving BUT having the crates from A Smart Move made a HUGE difference! We just moved our offices and having these crates made my job so much easier. I didn't have to build boxes, break down boxes or figure out what to do with them after. Everything was uniform in size and the dollies made moving them so easy. When I ran out of boxes (always more junk than you think!) I was able to call and get more delivered right away and I didn't have to slow down. The color made them really easy to spot so I knew what needed to still be unpacked. Having the removable labels come with the crates saved me from having to get one more thing. Both the owner and her delivery person were super nice and provided great customer service. I still don't like to move but if (and when) I have to move the next time I'm definitely using A Smart Move for crates! read more

We had an amazing moving experience with A Smart Move. Mikey, Chris, Manny and Anthony went out of their way to make it a smooth experience, in what was a very hectic day due to circumstances outside of our control. The actual move (packing, loading, and unloading) was the highlight of the day and who says that ever about moving?!?! It was actually the only thing that went smoothly that day and I am so thankful for our moving crew. We had everything loaded (they must be expert Tetris players the way they loaded the truck) and were headed to the destination, only to find out there was a hiccup in closing and we had no keys and no place to unload our stuff. The crew was the absolute best through this stressful process and stayed cool, calm and collected. We found a solution and they made it work, again using their Tetris skills! :) They stayed with us until the end and were so supportive of making sure we were happy with everything. I love the idea of A Smart Move! We needed boxes to move our stuff when we replaced our flooring. The boxes from A Smart Move came in handy. Ordering was easy, and it was easy to extend the rental period too. What I like, in particular, is that we did not need to assemble and collapse cardboard boxes and, of course, there was no waste.
