3.5 stars but rounding down since the service was so so and I didn't love a lot of the dishes.
We made reservations for a party of 6 on a Saturday night, and the restaurant was packed when we arrived at 7:00pm, which was expected. However, our table wasn't ready when we arrived, which wasn't expected! We had to wait for 10-15 minutes, which was pretty annoying. When we were finally seated, we ordered:
-Burrata w/Olive Oil, Sea Salt, Crostini ($12, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a-16-san-francisco?select=tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A#tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A): Pretty good, but not amazing. I didn't like the crostini they served with it, and preferred eating the burrata with the complimentary bread.
-Braised Octopus w/Fingerling Potatoes, Green Olives, Celery, Frisee, Roasted Garlic ($16, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a-16-san-francisco?select=tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A#pTDlMh-bE6Y3nu6g6KPKqQ): Just ok. There were too many components in the salad and the braised octopus got lost amidst all the other flavors. Skip!
-Salsiccia (Mozzarella, Fennel Sausage, Roasted Broccoli Rabe, Grana Padano, Garlic, Chiles, Olive Oil, $19 + $2 for Arugula, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a-16-san-francisco?select=tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A#hIT0FiURSlu8NgknP9sEpw): Too salty. I didn't like the combination of ingredients, and wouldn't order this again.
-Bianca (Mozzarella, Grana Padano, Green Olives, Basil, Chiles, Garlic, Olive Oil, $17 + $2 for Arugula, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a-16-san-francisco?select=tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A#hIT0FiURSlu8NgknP9sEpw): Yum! I liked how the flavors of the different cheeses worked together. Recommended!
-Squid Ink Tonnarelli w/Fort Bragg Sea Urchin, Cherry Tomatoes, Fennel, Fried Bread Crumbs ($22, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a-16-san-francisco?select=tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A#sb4C5-Sk_Ml6AJ8ZHunZBQ): Yum! The bottom of the uni got a little cooked from the hot pasta, but I liked the contrast of the briny uni and sweet squid ink tonnarelli. Recommended!
-Maccaronara w/Ragu Napoletana, House-Made Ricotta Salata ($18): Just ok.. I had high expectations for this dish, which was on the 2011 7x7 Big Eat list. The maccaronara had a nice chewiness, but the ragu was on the bland side. Skip!
-Nettle and Ricotta Gnocchi w/Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, Green Garlic, Olio Nuovo, Grana Padano ($21, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a-16-san-francisco?select=tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A#p9ri4c7piZFC6vj450S-3g): Just ok, but I've never been a huge fan of gnocchi so if you really like gnocchi, you may like this.
-Roasted Anson Mills Polenta ($7, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a-16-san-francisco?select=tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A#weD_Cd-tJ-5Mq88zkdAWoA): Eh, very bland/tasteless. I didn't like their version of polenta at all, and would not pay $7 for it again. Skip!
-Chocolate Budino Tart w/Sea Salt, Extra Virgin Olive Oil ($9, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a-16-san-francisco?select=tDuBmXLL5PPINF_d2pn43A#zDryzlyXBirG7xT4hNtMqQ): Yum! The chocolate was nice and dark, and went really well with the sea salt and olive oil. I can see why everyone raves about this dessert. Recommended!
This was my second time to A16, although a few dishes were pretty good, there wasn't anything that I'm in a hurry to come back for. I feel like A16 is a solid restaurant to go to for a good meal, but not somewhere you necessarily rave about. It's also really loud in the restaurant, so this isn't a good place to have an intimate conversation. Our server also seemed stretched thin, and it was hard to grab her if we needed something. Parking in this area is usually pretty tough to find, but A16 is towards the outskirts of the Marina, so there should be street parking nearby that is available. read more
