Old school place in what used to be a house on a country road, close enough to Saratoga but far enough away to not suffer the Toga crowdedness. It's our go-to regular pizza place, but they also are consistently very, very good with their other menu items - Italian and American, variety without having an overwhelmingly large menu (I'd recommend the Chicken Abeel Pasta). For take-out they have a pizza & wings special - 8 cut with 10 wings (the garlic Parmesan are great) for $25. The pizza is legit NY style with an excellent crust. We had a a/b comparison with another of our favorite pizza joints in the other direction and Abeel's won largely due to the crust. Always great! read more

This restaurant is such an unknown gem! I have been seeing the signs for it for years and finally went to get away from the track crowds! Was not disappointed! Service and food were amazing! I had a delicious salmon dish served with rice and perfectly cooked vegis for 1/2 the price of what it would have been in town. And tasted way better. They have everything from burgers and pizza to full entrees. You can sit in the bar area or the dining room. Will definitely go back often!! read more

Deliciously off the beaten path. Wonderful food with no pretense. This is the type of place you hear about by word of mouth. The current owners have been there for 12 years and many local folk are still just discovering it. It has a very relaxed atmosphere and a welcoming warmth I'm sure, even when the circular fireplace in the middle of the dining room is not roaring. Entrance is through the small bar area unless you require handicap access directly to the dining room. There are a couple of more intimate nooks with tables, fireside tables, and a raised floor dining area to give more dimension and separation. You will notice almost immediately upon being seated how clean everything looks. I was quite surprised at the quality of the draft beer list even though it was brief. We ordered pints of Whale's Tale Pale Ale and Bell's Two Hearted Ale ($5.50/pt) after our server Julie offered us tastes of each. We then reviewed the specials with Julie and made our choices from both that menu and the regular menu. My wife was intrigued with the Fig, Bacon & Shrimp over Creamy Goat Cheese Quinoa appetizer ($9.99) from the Specials menu while I opted for the Empanada appetizer ($9.99) on the regular menu. The blend of flavors in the fig/shrimp appetizer was excellent. My wife said her preference would have been for the quinoa to have been cooked just a bit longer, but she was not at all disappointed, and I was more than pleased with the taste that she shared with me. My two empanadas came with dollops of avocado and salsa, and chopped tomato, lettuce, and sour cream. The pastry crust was very flaky and flavorful and the ground beef and sausage filling was equally delicious and tasty. The warm sliced bread that was served did not even need the butter that was provided. The accompanying salads were a nice mix of shredded greens, tomato and good dressings. For entrées we both went with the Special menu. My choice was the Stuffed Pork Loin ($21.99) with spinach, mushrooms, bacon, and feta cheese finished with a roasted tomato demi glaze. It also came with butternut squash and my choice of a potato pancake. While I thought the pork loin was cooked a bit more than I would have preferred, the demi glaze provided the additional moisture necessary for me to still enjoy the entire dish. The potato pancake was more like shredded home fries and quite enjoyable. The squash was cooked to the perfect tenderness. I really thought I was going to need a doggy bag, but I kept on wanting to enjoy all the flavors while they were hot. My wife's entrée was the House-made Lasagna with sausage and beef ($16.99). It came with garlic buttered roll halves that were likely made in-house just like the pasta. Once again, very enjoyable flavors but my wife thought the pasta was too mushy from over cooking and she thought the sauce to be average. The warmth of the adjacent fireplace kept us from rushing out into the snow covered parking lot, so we listened intently to Julie's description of the available desserts. Chocolate Cream Pie, Coconut Cream Pie, and Apple Crisp ala Mode. There may have been others, but those were the ones that kept repeating themselves in my head. There's only one best way to settle such a dilemma, especially when your wife says she is stuffed. Along with our coffee ($2 each) I ordered the hot Apple Crisp topped with cinnamon whipped cream ($5.59), two spoons, and wait for it..... a slice of each pie ($5.59 each) to go! What a wonderful ending to our meal and a delicious midnight snack of leftover lasagna and pies. Yes, the pies were really good. This is what "country dining" should be like. The warmth of both the fire and the staff, and the outright friendliness, encourage you to return. I hate to leave a glowing review because I want Abeels to myself, but the owners deserve accolades. Abeels is quaint, located 15 mins from downtown Saratoga. Having lived 8 minutes away for the last 18 yrs, I'm embarrassed that is wasn't until New Yrs Eve that we had our first inside meal here. We left that night saying it was one of the finer dining experiences we've had in yrs. Food, service and ambiance all top notch. I now visit almost weekly and will continue to do so. Very cute ambiance and clean restaurant. Service was excellent. Friendly and upbeat staff. Food presentation was creative. If you enjoy sitting at the bar it's rather large and offers quick draw. Veal was prepare the way it should be and the peanut encrusted chicken was out of this world, however both of our dishes that were extremely different shared the same vegetable combination. Found this restaurant by accident, and sooo glad I did..it is a hidden gem..the food was outstanding, as was the service...homemade bread and salad dressings..shepherds pie and turkey pot pie were both delicious and filling..my kids ordered home made mac and cheese with slices of filet ..for 16.00, this was a great deal..the food is very reasonably priced as are the cocktails. And they offer many signature drinks fir half the cost of other places. There is a wood stove that the waitresses continued to feed during the two hours we were there..if yiu are anywhere near this place, do yourself a favor and check it out..you will not be didappointed...fabulous place... read more

If you're looking for an enjoyable dinner without having to deal with the crowds or parking hassles in downtown Saratoga Springs or on Front St. in Ballston Spa, consider Abeel's. It's got a casual atmosphere, great food, and really personal service. Oh, and I want that wood stove in the center of the dining room for my house! On a chilly evening, the hot mudslide - something I rarely see on a drink menu - looked appealing but I instead had a local brew, a Saratoga Red Tail Ale. That paired nicely with my dinner, even though I wound up waiting the better part of an hour, through soup, and salad, to make that happen. Which brings me to: CAVEAT #1: Don't come here if you're in a hurry. Be aware that the meals are prepared to order. Normally I would pace my drink by alternating with water, but that brings me to: CAVEAT #2: Don't drink the water. I don't know whether they get their tap water from a well or from the nearby Kaydeross Creek (I grew up a ways upstream near the Kaydeross; you could drink right out of it 40 years ago, not today). The water had a murky smell and taste. Likewise, I would not feel comfortable ordering coffee or tea. So get a fountain drink, or enjoy something from the bar, and have a drink of water when you get home. In the meantime, enjoy your meal. My soup, beans and greens, made me regret coming in for an earlier dinner, this soup, which also contained onions, red peppers, and sausage, is the kind that just gets better in the pot as the night progresses. Likewise the French onion soup is slow-cooked and refreshingly not salty. The turkey pot pie is listed under "medium plates," and is worth ordering not only if you love pot pie but more meat than vegetables. The chunks of turkey were large and plentiful. My harvest pork loin was accompanied by scalloped potatoes (something you don't often find on the menu) brussels sprouts, more greens, and juices I would have soaked into my dinner roll had I not already eaten it. We never made it to the dessert menu. I have to believe the desserts are equally good. There's lots more entrees I want to try on Abeel's menu, and they make it even more difficult to have more daily specials than I can remember as well. I'm so glad I finally got here. read more

Summary- Comfy local hidden spot delivers some good greasy pizza with a wide ranging menu with good beers. Food- 3.5 Stars Nothing that's gonna totally blow you away, but certainly doesn't disappoint. We started with an empanada, a special corn jalapeno fritter things, and an order of chicken livers. The empanada and fritters were both pretty awesome, the chicken livers were decent. We got 2 8 Cut pizzas to split for 5 people, which was too much food. The broccoli ricotta and buffalo chicken were both pretty solid although the buff chicken was a bit too greasy. Drinks- 4 Stars For a kinda homey place they had some good beers on tap both local and otherwise. Atmosphere- 4 Stars Definitely has that converted house kinda feel, in a good way. Like the bar area especially. The fireplace in the main dining area looked like it would be nice in the winter. Value- 4 Stars Good eats not too expensivo. I really like this place, although it's a bit out of the way. They make fresh dishes based on what's coming from the garden that day (not kidding!).. the mashed radish potatoes are unreal good. It's a bit pricey but absolutely worth it. A little older inside but it's kind of a country/intimate feel so I suppose that doesn't matter. All in all the food is excellent. If you don't mind the drive out of town, try it! They deserve some credibility since I really don't think a lot of people even know this little spot exists. read more

It seems to be a homely place. . .the traffic path is FUBAR, along with the bar design. But let's move to menu which is one of the most important aspects. The menu had all different ideas hodged podge into some new england-liberal-artsy dishes. . .it makes no sense and after tasting the quality, I can see why. They used poor quality ingredients along with putting the good idea fairy as the chef instead of locked in the basement where he belongs. They put a poor quality chimichuri spread on steak sandwich which threw the flavor off so bad. The new york strip was at least 50 percent gristle. Overcooked the shrimp, that was supposed to be scamp style, but looked boiled. They served parsnips as a vegetable dish, which I have never seen before. Definitely not my cup of tea. The food was luke warm. The French fries were fresh. The ginger ale had a good mix. I dunno, maybe it will taste better tomorrow. The waitress/bartender was nice, but bordering on incompetant. Seems like she was giving out reserved tables to walk ins, and allowing more people to enter, over capacity. So. . .the bar seems be stocked, but steer clear of those 2 dishes. read more

We were excited to try this restaurant, as we live close by and every road in the area has a blue sign indicating the direction of the restaurant. The food was ok, portions are disappointing, but most importantly service was extremely slow (with literally only TWO other parties in the dining room) and the staff were not very accommodating toward our young toddler, who patiently waited for 45 minutes for the appetizer we ordered for him. This is NOT a child-friendly restaurant, despite what the yelp profile states. Probably will not be heading back. read more

They're apparently known for their pizza (I'll try it the next time I go!) but I had the fish and chips, which was quite good. I tried their wings as well which, actually, were better than some places that specialize in wings. My only complaint was that the bathroom stall had one of those old fashion wild-west style swinging doors that offered very little privacy. A minor quibble, but one I hope they'll address. Not from the area, tried this place for the seafood and variety of other menu items. Didn't get to the restaurant until 9:20 and they close at 10. Service was still great and the food was even better! I got lobster bisque and jumbo shrimp and scallops dinner. Scallops were cooked perfect. Jumbo shrimp were a little tough and I'm not a fan when shrimp is in a cream sauce and the tails are left on but everything else was so delicious I did not even care. This place is a little out of the way but totally worth finding it. We had a great dinner. Appetizers,salad, dinner, and dessert. All were delicious. We will definitely be visiting this place again and next time bringing friends. The dining room and warm and inviting and our waitress was very sweet. They have a full bar. The cocktails are a little pricey so ask the price before you order a special drink. My drink was $12. Everything we had was totally homemade and try the balsamic dressing for the salad. I don't know what coffee they brew there but it was amazing, especially since coffee is not the focus of the restaurant. I also enjoyed the pizza, which was recommended to me before by a foodie friend. The dessert was delicious too! We went to this restaurant after visiting family in the area on Travers Day. Granted this is probably one of the busiest days of the year we were able to sit down almost immediately without reservations. One thing we noticed was there were several tables that were not cleaned before we arrived and after we left but they might have been short staffed. The food was amazing but I expected more for my 23 dollar beef stew entree. It was so small that my wife offered me some of her Abeel's pasta. Salad and wings were good and pizza looked good (will be back for that) but will not be ordering the overpriced beef stew again! read more

I ordered a chicken parmasian sandwich and mozzarella sticks for take out what i got was a soggy mess and old chicken it was so bad i could not bite through the chicken it was disgusting i brought it back and their response was (the chicken has been coming in that way lately WTF!!!!!!For those of us that cook we know that tough chicken is old going bad chicken no apology no attempt to recover my business . I am scared of what tonight will bring (hope i don't get sick never again ). The manager should check the kitchen to see what is no longer fresh. read more

Love this place. It's off the beaten path but a true gem . The food is fresh and delicious. My husband and I go once a week and always look forward to this special treat. We are kind of picky as we both love to cook. So when we go out we want the best and Abeel's does not disappoint. The atmosphere is cozy and feels like home. Great out of the way spot. The waitress was very professional and helpful. She cheerfully brought me a taste of the red house wine to try. I did not like their house wine but they had some good wines by the bottle. Not too expensive either. The clams were great. Good variety of items on the menu.
