I stop by here whenever i'm visiting a friend that lives in the area. I will say that the food here is so much better than whatever was served by the previous owner! I have never had Moroccan food before, and after coming here, I don't know how I made it through my life without it! I ordered the lamb shank and it was so tender and moist, absolutely perfect! The helping is more than enough for one person, but that didn't stop me from trying to eat the whole thing (I did end up boxing it up, which made delicious leftovers!). I was very impressed with how they poured my mint tea, which would have been amazing on its own, if the tea itself wasn't so delightful! AND THE COOKIES! I loved this place. One of the few places open on Christmas, but quiet as it is tucked out of the way on the north west corner of Alameda. Absolutely gorgeous view! The food was spot on. I had been to Morocco last Feb and tried a ton of amazing food. Theirs was just as awesome. Had the kefta sandwich which had sweet onions, warm tomatoes lettuce and well seasoned meatballs. The bread was also delish and I was told it was kosher. We also enjoyed traditional moroccan mint tea. The owner was extremely nice and told us about moroccan culture and we shared our experiences. Abigail's Cafe is one of Alameda's best kept treasures! Fatima, the owner is such a delight on every occasion and goes out of her way to make everyone feel like family. As for the food, I was blown away how fresh the eggplant and hummus were and my husband's lamb was beautifully cooked and fell right off the bone. I visited Abigail's for lunch and had the special which was braised lamb shanks braised in carrots and squash with fluffy cous cous. My friend had the Moroccan rice with eggplant. It was the best Moroccan food I've tasted! Don't forget to ask for the harissa to pair with everything. The owner was super helpful and patient and best of all she knew we were interested in the Moroccan tea and dessert and gave us a complimentary tasting. Will definitely be back on a Saturday for the prix fixe dinner, belly dancing, and wine with no corkage fee. This past Saturday night I had my mom's 60th birthday party at Abigail's Morrocan Cuisine! Abigail and her husband (the owners) took very good care of us! I felt at home in their restaurant. This is what I love most about Moroccan culture. We had ten guests and we had an amazing time. The belly dancer performed at 7:30pm- she was one of the best belly dancer I've ever seen. I've been belly dancing for years and she was just delightful. The food was excellent. I had the lamb. The couscous was the best I've ever had outside of Morocco. They also have free corkage which makes the bill very fair and reasonable! I also met their beautiful children. The restaurant only serves dinner on Saturday nights. They do offer lunch throughout the week. I admire a family who owns a restarant but makes their family/work life balanced. How wonderful!!! I love to support small family owned businesses! THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!! We were looking for Mediterranean and found them on Yelp. Nice combination of Mediterranean and Moroccan food. I got the Moroccan Kefta salad and he got a Kefta meal with rice (Kefta is basically Moroccan meatballs, spiced perfectly). Both were delicious and homemade. The hummus is great and probably homemade as well, it's got a great texture rather than just being creamy. The homemade hot sauce was SO GOOD. Abigail is a dream! I just got home from a fantastic meal at Abigail Cafe and Deli and am still basking in the afterglow of the delightful food and service. My boyfriend and I both had the special, Chicken Tagine with Saffron rice and Moroccan potato salad, and let me tell you, we couldn't have made a better choice. I could have sat there are inhaled the delectable smell of lemon and spices forever and been content, but the tenderness was worth every bite. The saffron rice was no side dish, the delicate flavors harmonized in perfect sync with the chicken Tagine. To finish we enjoyed some sweet Moroccan mint tea in an ornate tea kettle, very fitting. The owners are incredibly friendly and hospitable. There wasn't a thing I didn't feel I could ask for and they made us feel so welcome that we know we will be coming back again. They also told us about their plans to further develop the Moroccan feel of the restaurant and open for dinner, which I personally am very excited about. I teach at Mike's Paddle nearby and I love Abigail's! On weekdays, I'll pop in after a paddle for a vegetarian eggplant sandwich that is always warm and delicious. It's nice to splurge sometimes on their moroccan coffee which has a unique blend of spices and some sweetness. They also have a delicious mint lemonade and strong moroccan tea. We also partner with them to bring groups there for lunch after our Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga Retreats. They are amazing at satisfying our hungry group of 10-15 people. They provide us with a chicken or eggplant dish over rice and topped with caramelized onions and roasted red peppers that is delicious! They also offer greek salad with vegetarian lentil soup as an option. Recently she brought out her homemade hot sauce. I'm a hot sauce aficionado and this was incredibly delicious. Last Saturday night, we brought two couples for the dinner & belly dancing. You get a choice of lamb or chicken along with bread, an appetizer, and honey tea after the entree. All six of us thought the food was delicious. The owners charge only $25/person and it's BYOB with NO CORK CHARGE! Seems like a family affair, which adds to the experience, as the husband and wife were working between the kitchen and dining room service, and I saw at least one little girl and perhaps a relative or two nearby. The diners ranged from families with little kids to a cluster of young seniors to my 40-something group. The belly dancer was beautiful and very talented; she really lit up the place. This place is a hidden gem, and only blocks from my house. Why did it take me over a year to go? Who knows but I'll make up for it now that I know. I had the kefta sandwich but without the sandwich. I am gluten-sensitive so I ordered it without the bread and was not disappointed. They gave me a wonderful plate of greens, carrots, and onions with the kefta and a side of eggplant heaven. Yum. Simply the best meatball parmigiana sandwich I've ever had. A just-right crusty roll, soft and chewy inside but toasted and crisp outside, layered with a faint hint of garlic, plus tomato sauce and cheese and meatballs - oh those meatballs. These are not the meatballs you expect on a sub, and thank heavens. They are Moroccan meatballs on a NY Italian sub. Can you imagine? Genius! The Italian/Moroccan mix is fusion without the pretense. It's a rich, heady mixture of spices and flavors that will knock your socks off. Then there's also the eggplant parm, which is equally luscious - the eggplant is tender and succulent. Oh, and you should hope they have the chicken tagine special - a healthy portion of the chicken (mmm, preserved lemons), served with rice, potatoes, and vegetables. If I were you, I'd bring someone to share so you can get a sandwich (or two), and the special. You'll want to bring someone anyway, because this is a wonderful little spot for a romantic lunch. Sure, it's a cozy cafe and deli. But the beautiful ceramics and plants help create a lovely, comfortable ambiance - as do the wonderful and friendly owners (seriously, THE NICEST). I first discovered this place when I went to a nearby high school, and I have loved it since. Their Moroccan Kefta sandwich is my personal favorite entree, but I have loved everything I've tried. They often alternate between Moroccan potato salad (Fantastic), Moroccan cooked carrots (good), and Hummus (Homemade, and fantastic) as a side. Johnathon has always been helpful with accommodating my friends with dietary restrictions, and is very friendly and hospitable. I recently dropped by on a Thursday and was delighted to see that they had a traditional Moroccan chicken special which was delicious. It was a whole chicken leg that was perfectly seasoned and tender enough to be eaten easily with just a fork. The view of the bay and San Francisco is gorgeous. Overall, I just have two gripes with this places; they discontinued their delicious Abigail Juice, and their traditional Moroccan food tends to vary depending on the day because it has to be slow cooked. We had a birthday dinner party a few days ago. Let me tell you that everyone still tells us what a tremendous experience they had from the atmosphere with gorgeous views of the Bay, the friendly service, and delicious food. From the beginning; we asked if we can drop off the cake and balloons prior to dinner service and they didn't hesitate to tell us it wasn't a problem and treat it "like home". Even their daughter gave us some tips to us naive guys where we should place our birthday sign. Dinner service was fabulous. Everyone was raving about how the salad tasted "fresh" and even people who don't like beets were impressed. When you see many faces of reluctancy take a bite and it changes to a look of surprise and a smile; you know your food is a winner. The lamb shanks (fell off the bone) and caramelized plums was a perfect synergy of taste. A few of our friends who have visited Moracco (Rabat, Meknes) were so impressed by the authenticity of the dishes. On top of that; this is a family business meaning Jonathan is the waiter, Fatima is the cook, and their daughters run around to help them out. It's quite an amazing feat to do that. Add to the fact there is no cork fee or cake cutting fee. Yes, "like home"! On to another topic; we just had to respond to another review on her experience. 1. I've had a lots of beets (roasted beets, beetroot and coconut soup, canned beets, beats by Dre) and their salad certainly is NOT from the can. 2. Moraccan food isn't about nuts, fruits, chilling in pillows, and stuff. It is so much more than that which includes sharing great food with great people not single-seating. 3. This is a family-owned restaurant with a cozy feel who will try their very best to make you feel at home. I'm not sure the point of comparing to another high-end establishment (which I have went and also recommend) whose price is more than 50% more expensive plus a cork fee (which I remember as I did pay for it). It was a wonderful surprise to find them open at 10:30 am. on Saturday morning, while walking and enjoying the spectacular views of SF from Ballena Isle. I quenched my thirst with their excellent Moroccan Mint Lemonade. (My wife combined a cup of their hot Mint Tea with the lemonade + lots of ice, and it was also fabulous.) What a gem of a find Abigail's is! It's located on the Ballena Bay peninsula in Alameda overlooking the inner SF bay and the naval museum making for spectacular sunsets if you are there at the right time. We made reservations since we had a party of 5 and I recommend you do the same because everything was ready for us the minute we sat down. The salads came right away followed by the main course. You get three options and we all had the roasted lamb shank that was fall off the bone perfection. The belly dancer was great! She had everyone participating and was very entertaining. The owner may seem a little intimidating at first and you get the sense that you may have a "No soup for you" type of experience but nothing could be further from that assumption. This guy takes his establishment very seriously and is extremely intent on making sure you have a wonderful experience. He even introduces you to his wonderful wife who is the amazing chef and I think his daughter helps out in the dining area. A family affair that you wont soon forget. After he hugged us all good bye we realized we found a place that we will continue to go to for the foreseeable future. And why not! ABIGAIL'S MOROCCAN CUISINE is a small restaurant located at one of the marinas on Alameda Island, CA. This is the marina located near the west end of Webster Street. The dining room has about a dozen tables, and there are one or two tables on the front porch for outside dining. The cuisine is tasty and fresh. Lunch is inexpensive, and the selections include sandwiches, eggplant, feta cheese, and lentil soup. Dinner is a more serious affair, and what is available includes eggplant, lamb, chicken, and couscous. On about five occasions, I've been to Abigail's for lunch. With my sandwich, I ordered cappuccino. With every passing year, the decor at Abigail's gets more involved and more "middle eastern" or perhaps more accurately, more "north African." I am more an out-of-doors type than a foodie type, and so it is the case that the aspect of Abigail's that I enjoy the most is the view from the tables by the front window. The view takes the form of San Francisco Bay and any sailboats that happen to be in viewing distance. The view from the window does not include any buildings, houses, parking lots, or any other trace of humanity. Instead, what the diner will see in the foreground is a little meadow, where ground squirrels romp and run, almost resembling a clown act. On the other side of Abigail's is a marina, where I have spent an hour in the past, with a sketch pad and pencil, drawing the boats. Great little Moroccan cafe that serves delicious traditional homemade Moroccan food as well as East Coast style sandwiches. We had the eggplant and pepper salad, which was a soooo good, a Moroccan sampler of sorts with olives, peppers, eggplant etc. Also the Chicken Parmigana sandwich was great, with a good crusty roll. The atmosphere is simple but nice and the food is AMAZING! The owners seem to cook, serve and clean up! They were so nice to come out and introduce themselves and provided candles and plates for the cake we brought. The only thing that fell short for our group was that there was no high chair so our little wiggle worm had to be held throughout dinner which was a little tough on us. We just had dinner there and I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. It may very well be the adjustments post-covid, and I hope that is the case since there are so many other positive reviews. There is no table service. You order from a menu above the counter and there is also a special menu for $25 per person, which included chicken or lamb shank, couscous, salad, mint tea and cookies. The counter person said they were serving the specials but that we could order from the regular menu- a bit confusing, but we ordered the lamb and the chicken specials. I asked her how the lamb was prepared and she said it was cooked for a few hours and then cooked some more. I asked her how it was prepared, and she said with onions and Moroccan spice. I love Moroccan food, so I figured it would be great. Unfortunately, both the chicken and the lamb were very bland and my partner and I could not taste any seasoning. It seemed the meat had been boiled- very tender but no taste, so we asked for salt and hot sauce, which helped, but did not make a huge difference. The propositions were huge, so if you like mild/bland food and are super hungry, you will probably like it. I hope it was just an off night, but probably won't go back. read more
