Everytime I have come in the past 3 years I get fajita tacos and everytime they have come out cold. They've always remade it and they would be warm. But it's always a disappointment knowing I have to wait twice as long for two tacos to be warm. Most of the time the meat and tortillas are always freezing to the touch. The plate is always hot but the tacos feel like they sit there while everything else is prepared. Hopefully the manager I talked to today gets it fixed. We read good reviews so showed up here Sunday at 1:00 (prime brunch time) while driving from Colorado back to Austin with our dog. We had no reservation and they obviously had a line. Not only that but their Patio where dogs can sit is only served Friday through Saturday. The host was SO nice and recommended we order food to go at the bar and simply sit and enjoy the patio. We did just that, the bar tender was great too. The food was wonderful and the staff was just so nice and accommodating even as busy as they were at the time. read more

Was always a huge fan of this Abuelo's, in fact my husband and I ate in the bar area for lunch pretty much once a week over the last 10 or so years until this past year. We never stopped eating out but sadly had to drop Abuelo's off our lunch list due to their price increases. I totally get it but we eat out A LOT and although I have noticed price increases across the board Abuelo's prices seemed to have gone up quite a bit more than the others. Decided yesterday to splurge for lunch and drop in again. It all started bad when I sat myself in the bar area like I had always done-over half the tables were empty in that area and no one was waiting for a table in the lobby so I seated myself and proceeded to wait for my husband to join me. After 7-8 minutes I was told that there was no open seating in the bar area and I needed to return to the hostess stand. OK, so I did that and was told it would be a 5-10 min wait (for the same table I was sitting at). This made absolutely no sense to me but whatever- after about 10 minutes they re-seated me at the table I had been at-yep, ok, whatever. So dumb. I saw they did this same thing to others as well and they looked just as confused. So disappointed to see that one of my favorite menu items, Tilapia Vera Cruz was no longer available at lunch prices (right at $11before) and would cost pretty much $20, I mean, I love it but just not going to do that for lunch. Sigh. Settled for 2 chicken enchiladas with green sauce and was told they no longer had the green sauce, double sigh. Everything we got food wise was fine, nothing special. We try to keep our lunch ticket to $25 or below before tip but just can't really do that there. With tea our total was right at $30 which is what I expected and would be fine with for a splurge lunch if we didn't have to drink out of nasty glasses and have to ask for a new basket of chips since ours were cold (like out of the refrigerator cold). & nasty glasses are a BIG FAT no for me. The Lubbock location is okay, located in an easy to get to strip mall, which is a little blah, but it was clean inside and even on a Sunday night was full and lively. The same consistently good food experience I've come to expect. Definitely nicer than the Abilene location. Will be back when in the area. read more

Not sure why this place has such a low rating. We really enjoyed everything we ate. The tomatillo salsa with pineapples was really good as was the guacamole and queso. I had the pork medallions with mixed veggies and chili reinos. It was cooked perfectly ... the sauce is a kicker be prepared for sweet and HOT. My son had the beef fajitas. He said they were juicy and fall apart tender. The rest of the table did well with shrimp and tilapia plates. My only negative is the service was a little slow but not her fault. CARBS ... and came up with an awesome recommendation. Vegan Fajitas with Romaine Lettuce and a side of Mojo Con Ajo sauce. The flavor was outstanding. It was so good just dipping by he vegetables in the sauce that I forgot to wrap up my veggies into fajitas! I would definitely come again and have that again I'm allergic to carrots. Love this chain!! Food is always consistent and yummy! The papas are A-mazing!!! The service at this location is top notch! Bartenders are on point! Drinks are strong and cheap! I love the bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer!! The fajitas are always perfect! I love the build your own enchiladas selection paired with sauce choices! I wish more restaurants offered such an option. Customer service is horrendous. David was very uncaring and not open to discussion about an overcharge for some queso. I paid $21 for an order of queso and was expecting a quart. When I got home I had two - 1/2 pints. David, a manager basically said I got what I ordered...truly not, but he refused to help. So I paid $21 bucks for a PINT of queso. TOTAL RIP-OFF. I have always had a pleasant experience and good food at Abuelos ( all over the state) in past years, however our experience at the Lubbock location in Dec of '21 was not too good. I had the chicken chimichanga, the "cubed chicken" was fire grilled??? not too tasty and a little rubbery. You think a "pulled" chicken might have been a better choice??? I think it just came out of the "bag" , complaimed to the waiter, his response was " just eat some more it will get better" . Really?? you should be taught to handle issues not just give a "flip" response!!!!!!!! That was the "straw" for me . my wife was completely satisfied with her meal. Usually my friend and I go to chuys to split fajitas but one of my friends recommended this place so we went and tried it. I will definitely say they just forced me to stop going to chuys. We got the fajitas trio and it was delicious. For the price of a mix fajita combo for two at chuys, we got the trio at Abuelos and it came with shrimp!! I was excited. I also ordered queso (not pictured) but it was also very good. However for the price of the queso, I do feel like it came with very little amount. Other than that, I'm sold on this restaurant. Abuelo's is a Lubbock standard. Been around a while, everyone knows it. Still popular. They have remodeled, and it looks better, while maintaining its familiarity. Hostess was ok. (Not too friendly, though. And they should be, as the first face customers see.) Our waiter was competent, and efficient on a busy weekend night. Food was ok. Timing seems to be an issue as the enchiladas were warm, while fajitas were warmer. Where is the sizzling show? The salsa and chips were, frankly the tastiest part of the meal. It was ok. Had called to inquire if they could handle a large party on a Saturday night. We were told they did not have reservations but if we were willing to wait they could accommodate us. Upon arrival we were told the wait would be 60-90 minutes. We didn't mind the wait as this was one of our favorite restaurants and willing to wait and we were visiting from out of town and used that time to talk and catch up. After waiting for an hour or so we asked how long it might be before we were seated and we were very rudely told it would be another hour to hour and a half. Yes, 5 stars. There are so many BAD restaurants and so few good ones in Lubbock, anybody who can pull off good food at decent prices in a comfortable place deserves 5 stars -- at least. first -- this is NOT Mexican food. If you took 90% of this menu to Mexico -- they wouldn't recognize it. This is Tex-Mex and New Mexico style food. Lot's of traditional New Mexico Reds-chili powder and purees used here, as well as the green chilis. Besides the normal Tex-Mex menu of enchiladas, fajitas, quesadillas, tamales, tacos and rice/beans, there are many excellent seafood/chicken/steak options; and their excellent potato and spinach side dishes are well worth asking for. Many of the menu choices also now come with yummy steamed veggies -- which is good for adding a healthy side to any meal. Try the stacked enchilada with eggs over-easy -- this is my favorite nostalgia meal of all time. It reminds me of eating at the table of friends when I was in school. And all their dip appetizers are serious guilty pleasures so don't just order the guacamole without checking all the choices! they make a couple of really yummy soups as well -- I'm always a big fan and can hardly pass them by.
