It was hot in here! But despite the temp, I dug the vibe, both inside and out. There's limited seating inside with additional seating outside. My husband got a cold brew which he said was okay. I got their Piloncillo cinnamon latte which I thought was great! The baristas were nice. We commented on their fridge artwork and chit chatted about that with them a bit because my son thought it was cool since he's currently reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I'd recommend this place.
Came around 8:30 am on a weekday and it wasn't too busy. Service was friendly and pretty quick. -Banana cream matcha (4/5): the banana cream was yummy and not overly sweet or artificial tasting, matcha was a good strength -Guava cream matcha (2/5): guava flavor was strong and fragrant but overpowered the matcha, I'm not the biggest fan of guava but wanted to try cause it was unique

Always a solid choice for coffee or matcha in the Bay! I don't always like a strawberry matcha, but theirs is super yummy! The strawberry compote is fresh and sweet. It pairs perfectly with their earthy matcha. They also offer up a nice selection of sweet and savory baked goods if you're in the mood for a quick bite. You really can't go wrong! Also, a huge fan of their branding. Digging the new cup design!
Our drinks took 15-20 minutes to come out. The coffee shop is nice and has nice door seating. My friend and I ordered the Vanilla Latte + Pandan Latte, both of which were not filled up all the way. Also, they lacked the difference in taste and we couldn't tell apart the difference in orders. The Vietnamese iced coffee was horrible. It was so dark and bitter and left a really strange aftertaste. Though I will say the matcha guava was really good. The cream top tasted like fresh guava, and it complemented the matcha very well. That was the only redeeming drink here.
First time coming to Academic Coffee, and it definitely won't be my last. I came before work on a recommendation from a friend, and I'm so glad I did. I ordered the Banana Matcha Latte, and it was hands down the best matcha latte I've ever had. The flavor was perfectly balanced, smooth, and incredibly delicious. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try more of their drinks. If this first visit is any indication, this place is a gem!
While visiting San Jose, I came across this coffee shop and I'm really glad I did. The coffee quality was excellent, the staff was very friendly, and the pastries were absolutely delicious. The shop itself is a bit small, so it may not be the easiest place to study for long periods, but it has a great atmosphere, good vibes, and a very welcoming environment. The outdoor seating was a huge plus, especially with nice weather -- it's the perfect spot to sit outside and enjoy your coffee. Parking in the area can be a little tricky and it is paid parking, but that's pretty common for most downtown areas. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely recommend this coffee shop to anyone looking for quality coffee and a nice atmosphere.
After a long workday, I needed a pick-me-up. My friend has already mentioned good things about Academic Coffee. I went to their location near Valley Fair, but was curious about their OG downtown location. I came during the afternoon on a weekend. I don't know why I expected it to be crowded, but I was one of the only customers. Service was super kind and quick, which was nice! The actual shop is quite small inside, with seating, and there are seats outside as well. I got the Matcha Banana Latte with Oat Milk. This is what my friend always hypes up. I can see the hype! It was so rich, creamy, and banana-like without any artificial flavor. The matcha was smooth and earthy. I'm a fan of their lattes and would come back for more! Academic Coffee is a must if you like caffeine. They have a couple of locations in San Jose. Drinks are consistent, although pricey. This location is off S 2nd St. with street parking around.
When it comes to matcha, THEY KNOW BALL lol I don't know what took me this long to finally try Academic, but my only regret is not visiting sooner. It may actually be a strong contender to dethrone my current #1 matcha spot in South Bay I arrived with the full intention of trying their coveted banana matcha latte, but had to pivot to try their seasonal melon matcha latte once I saw it on the menu. Amazinggg flavor! The matcha was creamy, earthy, and just strong enough. The melon flavor was so well executed in this drink and you definitely taste the melon notes right away, which was delightful. It was refreshing and fruity without being overpowering. Best way I can describe it is like a honeydew Melona ice cream bar melted into a matcha latte. My friend got the double matcha guava latte with a guava cream top, which was delicious and tropical, but we both agreed that the melon matcha latte was the standout by far. I'm already planning when I can go back for it before they switch out their seasonal drinks! We came on a weekday afternoon, so there wasn't much of a line at all. It's a relatively small space for a coffee shop with limited seating/tables inside, but they have a cute little outdoor seating area with benches. I presume it would get pretty cramped on busy weekends, so I'd say it isn't really an ideal study cafe, but you could definitely make it work for a little solo study sesh and they have free wifi. There are metered parking spots along the street that I didn't have an issue finding nearby. Important note: they don't take cash.
Ordered: Iced Banana Cream Espresso Latte (~$8) Iced Pistakio Cream Espresso Latte (~$8): salted Pistakio cream top with quinoa puffs in an espresso latte Stan's Yeasted Glazed Donut (~$4) Aya's take: Academic Coffee is doing specialty coffee drinks right! As soon as I saw the Iced Banana Cream Espresso Latte, I knew I had to have it. The banana cream tasted like they used fresh bananas (not artificial), creamy & fluffy, and not overly sweet yet balances out the latte even more once it's fully mixed. The Iced Pistakio Cream Espresso Latte was nutty, creamy, and balanced. Both cream tops were excellent and you probably can't go wrong with any variation of latte & cream top. We got Stan's Yeasted Glazed Donut for a quick snack and it was beyond airy, light, and fluffy. My only complaint was the cashier lacked basic hospitality & customer service you would expect. Good try, nonetheless!
Welcome to my favorite matcha spot in San Jose! Their banana matcha is hands down my favorite drink here, and it's the one I always recommend. The banana flavor is perfectly balanced with the matcha, making it creamy, refreshing, and not overly sweet. I also tried the guava matcha, but it didn't stand out as much, so I'd definitely stick with the banana matcha. They also have a great selection of breakfast pastries that pair perfectly with your drink, plus free wifi if you want to work or study. The store is a bit small but cozy and super cute. Just be prepared for a line on weekends, it may get busy, but it's absolutely worth the wait!

I've been to both Academic Coffee locations and I think I enjoy the matcha flavor more in the downtown location, versus I enjoy the thick cream topping more in the other location by Valleyfair. We went today on a Sunday and the wait was about 40-45 minutes total from the line to the wait for the drink. If you love guava, this is the spot for you to try if you want to treat yourself. I am personally a bigger fan of their banana matcha. The guava matcha is $9, banana matcha is $8.5. Depending on the day/time you go too, you may have to account for street parking (meter). My partner, who's usually picky with finding a good deal/package, gave his stamp of approval due to the great quality of their drink. While the quality is top notch, it's definitely a splurge, a "good treat yourself" drink. Regardless, a huge shout out to the owner and the team for making these incredible drinks and being patient with the many customers! read more

Aesthetic coffee shop located in downtown San Jose. This review only consists of their matcha latte. Service was great, the wait was a little long on the weekends, and they have a corner of flyers/cards for local business events. The place has natural lighting, indoor/outdoor seating, offer pastries, etc. I asked the cashier if the matcha honey latte or the matcha vanilla latte was more popular - he said the matcha honey latte and I ordered that. I ended up ordering a regular matcha latte as well for my family member. Matcha Latte - not as sweet and I wish there was more matcha taste when I first sip it. Matcha Honey Latte - still not as sweet even with the honey and not much flavor. I wasn't entirely impressed with the drinks. read more

Glad to have a location close to my office. Parking location is kind stressful unless you go early in the morning because it's right by Valley Fair. Located next to a beautiful park though and lots of indoor space. Team is wonderful per usual which is consistent with the DT location. Drinks were also amazing which is again consistent with the original location. The Banana Cream matcha is worth the hype I fear. read more
Pleasantly surprised by this shop. I'd been wanting to stop in for a while and finally went early Sunday morning. The shop is quite small inside and minimal seating arrangements. I was able to park directly across and walk in. I was immediately greeted and surprised how many other people were in so early. I ordered the banana cream pie latte and a chocolate croissant. I really liked the banana cream pie latte and the banana and coffee flavor went well together. They use real banana so it's not an artificial flavor cream. I would love to come back and try the banana cream matcha next! read more
Final Thoughts: 3.11/5 Apparently there's a hype for this place, which is kind of interesting because I found my drink to be...normal...subpar...average...?? Experience overall was fine though. With any hype, I do have fairly high expectations, but unfortunately, they were not to my standard. Perhaps it was the drink I chose or the timing my friends and I went. That shouldn't be an excuse though. Their pastries do somewhat intrigue me, so maybe I will consider coming back for them at an earlier time. Drink: Pandan Latte: 2.4/5 First time trying pandan in a coffee drink I believe. The flavors work well together, so I didn't feel like both flavors were fighting against each other on my palate. This beverage appeared to just be milk though or mainly milk. It lacked a lot of flavor in general and I felt like it was missing a lot of elements. The flavor of pandan was only in the aftertaste and I had to really let that flavor marinade on my tongue to even get a hint of it in the aftertaste. Coffee flavor was so light and I had a feeling it was going to be like that due to the color of the drink itself being very light. Sweetness of the beverage was pretty good. For these beverages, I like a good balance of bitterness and sweetness, so the sweetness level for this was good for me. For some reason, I thought the consistency for this latte would be a little thicker and creamy. Definitely not the case here. It's very thin since the beverage is just stirred together in the cup without any excessive mixing or whipping. Aroma of the pandan was apparent. For me, it did smell like the leaves themselves mixed with some of the paste. There's this earthy and grassy tone to it, which makes me believe it's the leaves that are used here. Big plus if this is the case. Menu: Some of their flavors aren't something that you would see at your typical coffee shop. This is mostly referring to their specialties, which include flavors like pandan, pilochillo, and elderflower. Personally, I like trying new flavors or seeing different flavors on the menu mixed with your classic ones. Additional comments: Even though I was pretty disappointed with the drink, their pastries look like they could pair well with a drink. Not too many options from what I observed on other reviews, but a fair amount of pastries, donuts, and cookies. --------- Quality: Fast coffee They have an open counter where we can see what happens behind the scenes and I actually watched my drink being made. Syrup from a bottle, milk, and then a shot of coffee I believe. I'm aware that these are perhaps all of the components to it, but I feel like there's a lack of care that goes into making a drink at this price point. Perhaps I can understand this with a fast food place, but it's not actually something I would like to see at a coffee shop like this. Quality of the ingredients feels somewhat optimal though. Their milk substitutes are actually the branded ones, so that's always a plus. Price: Fair to expensive Fair in a sense that most other coffee spots will charge around the same price for a drink like this, but expensive is a sense that the quality of this coffee feels so suboptimal. Price range for the drinks here are $4 to $6 with a few outliers. There is also an upcharge of $0.50 for milk substitutes. They are an option though. Service: Happy energy They were quick and efficient today. There was a small crowd when we came in, but we were able to get our drinks within about 5 minutes. They appear very nice and I love the energy even for a late afternoon. Ambiance: This place has a vibe to it. Very rustic and earthy, which is calming. There's not much space inside. From what I recall, there's only seats that line the wall of the interior. Some standing space is available, but again, the café is quite small itself. Counter and display case create a border that blocks off most of the space, which makes sense. More of a grab and go shop for me rather than a place I would come to have a coffee date or study at. Parking plays a factor in this too. Location/Parking: Downtown SJ...enough said... If y'all know downtown San Jose area, then you know that it is not the most ideal spot for driving or parking. Never my preferred choice if I can help it. The shop stands in between 1st and 2nd street. Parking spots are available in front of the shop. Please read the signs for parking and pay accordingly. Most of the spots were available to us on a Friday during the late afternoon time. We were in and out of there within 7 to 10 minutes, so we just needed a few coins. These spots are diagonal and I believe reversing in is the way to go, given the orientation of their lines. read more

I stopped by a while back to try the matcha with banana cold foam and wow, I was surprised. I'm not usually a fan of banana but I actually really liked this drink. I still find myself craving it from time to time. Just a heads-up though, it's definitely on the sweeter side but it is not too much. The service was great but I gotta say, the workers are great. When something blows up on TikTok, the demand gets crazy. The cold foam takes time to make so they do sell out. Just be patient and kind to the staff because they're doing their best. They start selling this drink at 8 AM even though they open at 7, and it usually sells out before they close. If you don't live nearby, I'd recommend checking their Instagram to stay updated before making the drive. Also, a big bonus for me is that they carry Stan's Donuts. Which is my favorite donut shop. I'll definitely be back for another coffee and of course this matcha with banana cold foam. I tried their coffee years ago but don't really remember if I liked it so I'll have to give it another shot. read more

I came in this morning and it was decently busy! my drink came out quickly however and all the baristas were super sweet:) I got the banana cream pie latte and I think it's my few favorite coffee. I want to come by sometime this week and try the banana matcha!! looks delicious read more

BY FAR!!!! The best coffee spot in San Jose! It is the perfect place to study and do work, and the workers always play good music! The workers are by far the best part of it all, you can tell they all genuinely love their job and they always have conversations to strike up! I love that academic hosts community based events and invites other small owned businesses to come and host, it's rare to see places do that nowadays! Big shoutout to Marnie and Molly for always getting me right I usually get the Hojicha Latte, and I have never been to another place that can do it better than academic! Definitely have recommended this place to everyone I meet :))) if I could give this place a higher rating I most definitely would!!! read more

I only really go here for their matcha lattes. This is a cute and quiet coffee shop with decent seating inside and plenty seating outside for chitchat and studying! The Matcha Latte never fails to impress me and is just right. As you can tell from the green shade, it does provide the matcha flavor any matcha lover seeks. The only downside is you will have to find some street parking in the nearby neighborhood to avoid fees, otherwise you will have to pay the parking meter to avoid getting a ticket. read more

Small, clean, hip, well lit, cafe on the south side of downtown. Friendly service and good quality coffee and pastries. At 7:40 am, I ordered a drip coffee and a pastry on a Sunday. The coffee, while a delish light blend, was not piping hot. Tasted like it's been in an air pot for a good hour. I chalk that up to bad timing on my part, I guess? Otherwise I enjoyed the flavor profile of the Joe. Had one of the best pastries in recent years that morning, an Everything Croissant. It was a square of buttery flakey croissant pastry, layered thick on top and bottom with Everything Bagel Seasoning, and stuffed with cream cheese and green onions. I don't know where they source their pastries, but this one hot all the marks for me. Perfect! read more

I love academic coffee, I used to go here a lot during college however I haven't been lately because I hate the parking. The place is fairly small; wouldn't be ideal for studying, it's good for a grab and go. Lines can get long. The staff is nice - it's a vibe. I went again to try their banana cream matcha and it was so good!! The cream top was delicious and that's where the banana flavor obviously is, the matcha itself was also good i would say 8/10. I also got an everything croissant which was a 10/10 i love it when coffee places have them cause it's my favorite. Anyways I can't wait to come back and try their hojicha next! read more
I stopped by earlier in the week to grab a drink and I ordered the hojicha brown sugar latte and ube coconut snickerdoodle. My order was prepared pretty quickly and I liked my drink a lot, as the brown sugar added sweetness without overpowering the nuttiness of the hojicha. The ube coconut snickerdoodle was HUGE which was a bonus. I was able to secure street parking fairly easy on a Monday morning, but parking looks like it could be challenging if all the spots are taken. I would like to return in the future to try other drinks. read more

I ordered the banana matcha today for $9.75 and was disappointed. I could barely taste any matcha -- the ripe banana flavor completely overpowered it. For the price, I expected a more balanced drink with noticeable matcha taste. Honestly, if I just wanted a banana drink, I could go to Bobaguy for something similar at a much lower price. I've heard a lot about this place and wanted to give it a try. I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I ordered the seasonal banana cream pie latte. The banana flavor was good, and the drink itself was ok. I also tried the chai latte, which had a strong spice flavor but was pretty watered down. I will say, the drinks aren't sweet. So if you like sweet beverages like me, I wouldn't recommend. The chocolate croissant was just ok. There was not a lot of chocolate inside. Inside is small, but pretty cute. The menu isn't displayed on the wall, it's at the counter. As a first timer this made it difficult to order, as I didn't see the menu until getting to the front of the line. 4.5/5 My friends love Academic so I finally visited. Their go-to drink is the iced matcha latte. I ordered the Iced Matcha Honey latte and it was pretty good! The sweetness was just right. I do think it's not made very consistent. I think some baristas do make it better than others. I recently went on their last day of Pumpkin Spice season and got their Pumpkin Spice Hojicha latte. That drink was phenomenal. It was the perfect amount of sweetness and should be THE holiday season drink. It's so delightful and the lightness of the tea was amazing. I was terribly disappointed in myself for not trying it sooner. My friends have been hyping up that drink for the longest time so I pushed myself to make to drive to get it. I'm very glad I did. Until next year I guess! I like how there's an indoor and outdoor seating area. Parking is also not too difficult thankfully but when it gets busy, it does get busy. Besides the drinks, I've ordered Christine's cookies for pickup here. Her cookies are amazing! But she's moving to SF so no more pick up here unfortunately. read more

Stopped by today for some morning coffee. I saw a long line outside. I found out that today there was a new year celebration out in front. After I made my way in ,I was able to purchase a pandam latte,and a red boat latte,also the banana latte. The last two are seasonal. The red boat has a rich salted caramel flavor. Definitely a flavor that should be in their normal rotation. read more

I randomly discovered Academic Coffee because of its location, which is close to SJSU's campus, and I'm definitely coming back for more. There's indoor and outdoor seating, and most people come here to study or socialize with their friends. The ambience is perfect for that. The staff is VERY attentive and personable and they make you actually want to come back. The cashier wrote my name on the cup & dotted the "i" with a heart & it literally made my day haha. (It's the little things haha) Banana Cream Pie Matcha Latte: I visited this place before "Banana Cream Lattes" started trending on social media and I loved it. I am obsessed with matcha and I've never had anything like this before. The balance between the banana flavor and the matcha is perfected here and I'm definitely coming back for more! The only downside of this place is it closes around 3-4pm! read more

I went on Thursday with my best friend at around 2pm. I had heard from my sister that lives nearby that the matcha there is good and worth giving a try. Not only was there matcha, but there was banana cream matcha! My best friend and I got the banana cream pie latte and I the banana cream matcha latte. Both iced. I wanted to try a pastry from there, but everything was sold out and we had gotten there at 2pm, two hours before closing, so plan accordingly! It's most likely because the coffee shop isn't too far from SJSU, so college kids gotta eat! For my drink, I would give it a 8.5/10. Only reason being is that the banana cream is what makes the drink sweet. If you drink it with a straw the matcha, you will taste the bitterness. However, if you give the drink a little swish and swirl it around and mix everything, the perfection. The sweetness was not overbearing and it was just right. I would definitely come back here again! + the shop being on the corner was really cute! :) read more

I had a dream that I had a matcha latte with oatmilk so I told myself that I think I need to fulfill that dream. It just so happened was in the neighborhood one morning and noticed Academic Coffee was nearby. I'm hardly in downtown, so I thought I'd make my morning eventful and decided to have a matcha latte. The gentleman at the cashier was beaming with energy at 8am which is exactly the kind of energy you need early in the morning. He was wearing a cardigan with flowers on it. Sad I didn't get the name, but he's great! Matcha latte was great. They don't carry soymilk if anyone was curious. The temperature could be hotter in my opinion, but otherwise, it was delicious! read more

Academic Coffee is such a gem in downtown San Jose. The coffee is always great and you're greeted by their friendly staff . I'd recommend the pandan latte, but their new addition of the banana latte is climbing the charts. If you're a matcha lover the banana matcha latte is also really good. read more

Order: Honey Matcha Latte-whole milk, less ice Horjicha latte- whole milk, less ice 10/10 perfect Both drinks were so good! The honey matcha was so well balanced! I could really taste the honey and the matcha. It's hard to get a good matcha right but they did. It didn't taste too milky or diluted. Way better than the mango matcha latte that just tasted like mango. The horjicha was the same. I'm most places that I get good horjicha the ice would take up more than half of the space even after I ask for less ice. I felt like I finally got a whole cup of horjicha here. It was flavorful, maybe even dark, but I like it that way. Not milky or diluted. read more

I took my friend around SJ and stopped by for a caffeine boost. I got the matcha latte with oat milk and honey and it was a solid matcha. My friend got a regular matcha latte and it tasted more like milk than matcha (milk substitute absolutely matters!) I really wanted to try their banana matcha but they didn't have it on their menu when I went, but I'm really excited to try it when it returns! read more

Came in on a Saturday morning and they were busy which is not surprising. Nevertheless the worker at the front was very friendly and convinced me to get an old fashioned donut lol. The donut was honestly pretty good but I just wish it was a bit crispier. I got the iced chai latte with oatmilk (they don't charge extra for alt milk btw!) which tasted good. I prefer it to taste a bit stronger, but that's because I typically like a dirty chai. I also tried the piloncillo latte which was really good! It was a good balance of sweetness imo and thought it tasted better than the chai. The seating area inside is a bit lacking. Seating outdoor was nice but there's not much to see. Still, a nice place to get coffee, eat some pastries, and sit at for a little bit. read more

Is there a way to mobile order?

No there is only street parking. The lot next to the building belongs to the hotel.

Is this place really dog friendly? I did not see any outdoor seating in the pictures. Can we bring small dogs inside?
We've got a large patio with 9 tables outside. Dogs are welcome in the patio but unfortunately health codes do not allow dogs inside unless they are a service animal.
What kind of pastries do you guys still serve?
We serve mochi donuts and custard cakes from Third Culture Bakery. Plain croissants, almond croissants, and ham & cheese croissants from Alexander’s Patisserie. We also serve cookies, madeleines and canales from Stained Wheat.
Does this place still serve the matcha croissant?
Sorry we no longer have the matcha croissant but we have a matcha mochi donut and a matcha cake.
Is this a good place to study at night?
We think so! We close at 7pm but it’s pretty quiet between 5-7pm.
