In a word: overrated. I give it 5 starts for decor 2 stars for price 3 stars for service. 2.5 stars for taste. Had the biscuits and gravy. For the price, it was a good portion, however, the biscuit was lacking in moisture. It left a lot to be wanted. The gravy was good. However, I had just ordered the same dish at the Turnaround Cafe in Turner two days earlier. The dish was twice as good there and a couple dollars cheaper. And the service was impeccable. Came in on a Saturday morning. Despite lots of staff in the place, and not all that many customers, the service was surprisingly inefficient. Forgot our sticky bun (and disappointingly, this was selected from the too-tightly wrapped buns at the counter). Served the cocktail almost at the same time as the main meal. The chicken and waffles was nice, if not inspired. The maple syrup was just maple flavored corn syrup (yeah, I know how rare it is to get the real thing in a restaurant, but coming from maple syrup country originally, I still get let down by cheap substitutes). (Chicken and waffles at Hash House a Go Go are garnished with rosemary, papers, deep fried leeks, and a sprinkle of soy barbecue sauce. These were just plain.). The special was berry crepes filled with flavored yogurt. The crepes were okay but very thick, portion huge. Again, nothing out of the ordinary. Overall, this is an expensive alternative to other Salem breakfast places. Try Word of Mouth instead. But we will probably come back sometime for lunch or dinner to see what we think. We're especially curious to try their homemade ice cream. read more

I ordered the Loco Moco, and being a local girl from Hawaii, I was excited when our server brought my food to the table. Every single bite I took, the rice was so crunchy, and old, as if the cook had scraped it from off the bottom of the pot. We told our server, who was kind enough to bring me another portion of rice, however by that time I had already eaten all of the beef patty and eggs (I was starving). The server admitted to us that the cook did indeed scrape the bottom of the rice pot, while they could have given me fresh rice in the first place. His exact words were "he didn't want to get the fresh rice." I felt it was ironic that they served a Hawaiian girl old crunchy rice scraped from the bottom of the rice pot. This was our first time to Acme, I was hoping it would be our new spot! I want to specify that our service was awesome, and in no way does my review reflect the quality of service. Our server, who I found out is also from Hawaii, looked like he felt bad about the Loco Moco, and we appreciated his help in remedying the issue. read more

Darian is the absolute worst server ever!!! I used my please and thank you when being served by him, but he just hates his job...I guess! He didn't check on our meals, didn't ask for refills, seemed like he didn't care about my experience there, had a grumpy look and was just plain rude!!! Food was really good, but our server seemed irritated that we were there, she did not even say hello, she just came up with the notepad and pen, I guess that was our cue to tell her our order. She brought us our food, then never came back, another server had to get us our bill and take our plates. WAY overpriced for what it was. Ordered a skillet. Potatoes were gigantic overcooked chunks, eggs were scrambled(no choice offered) and way overcooked. Very little gravy. And they never did bring my toast. Coffee was weak and a tiny little cup. Hubby's eggs benedict came with two eggs that were hard in the center and Hollandaise that was very bland. Was going to try and eat last Friday but the parking lot was full and it looked like it was very busy. From the reviews it looks like a good place to eat and try a new place. Want to see for my self why some people were giving low reviews. With what I work it may be hard to find the time to try it with their hour. Maybe in time they will have better hours that's why I and giving it 3 stars for now. This was our second visit to Acme. An informed and attentive waitress tended our table. We each had red-fish....one Parmesan coated and the other sauteed, both excellent. The jalapeno, cheddar potato pancake accompaniment was really tasty. They are working on an outdoor experience under the shade of a magnificent Douglas Fir. read more

The food here is amazing. We ordered the pastrami cheese fries as a starter and wish we would have ordered two more as our entree. The service is fantastic and match the style. It doesn't look like much on the outside and the name was a turnoff for me but thankfully my husband persuaded me to try it. The food is wonderful. Not a lot of options on the menu, but they do an excellent job with what there is. We had the BLT's. I had potato salad with mine and my husband had their cole slaw. Excellent thick, crispy bacon, fresh lettuce and perfectly ripe tomato on a homemade hoagie roll. They also make the potato salad and cole slaw fresh daily. And to top it all off, they have homemade ice cream too, with amazing flavor options. We will definitely be back! I would give it a five star, however, we sat in the outside dining area ( charming area), and the service was really slow because they were in the middle of changing shifts. So I definitely have enjoyed the breakfasts much better than the two dinners I've had at Acme. Last weekend I enjoyed the sourdough pancakes today I ordered the pumpkin pecan pancakes and the insides were completely raw and in liquid form! When I told the waitress she looked at me with disgust and then said "OK..." As if she was asking me what I would like her to do about it so I told her that I would have something else (yes I had to actually ask her to take the plate away I think she thought I was just giving her a critique but that I would proceed to eat the raw pancakes) I noticed that she had an attitude about it and considering it took 40 minutes for us to get our breakfast and it really wasn't that busy this morning I thought she should've been a little bit more courteous and checked her attitude at the door :/ read more

Had dinner here for the first time a week ago. I wanted to like this place. Ambience: Hip and creative, if not a little cold (lots of hard surfaces). The lights were flickering unnervingly in the back dining room. When I asked about it the waitress said that it was because they were overloading their electrical system (!). It was noticeable and gave me a bit of a headache. Service: The waitress was nice. However, she kept referring to the restaurant as "they" instead of "we" (as in "They have good ice cream here."). My wife was the mood for Prime Rib, so we decided to try Acme's. Have been here numerous times before, with no complaints. Tonight was totally different. When we arrived, the restaurant was about half full, but we had to wait while a table was cleared. After being seated, we watched two other tables seated. Both tables had their orders taken, while no one came to check on our table. We even told a server that we were ready to order, but on one came back. We decided that after almost 20 minutes with no attention, that they did not want our business. Will have to think long and hard before going there again. read more

From the get-go, it's a battle for service. A complete chore in flagging down the wait staff. No refills on drinks, and by the ten minute mark our experience was pretty much ruined. Needless to say, we won't be returning. Food was mediocre, doused in salt, with items forgotten. I'm guessing at this rate, their business will soon also be forgotten. read more

The service was very so-so. Like she really could care less if we were there or not. We had the special. A steak wrapped in bacon. I strongly suspect it was a microwave special. Best biscuits and gravy ever. I grew up in the south and good southern food can be hard to find in the Pacific Northwest. I grew up eating my grandmother's biscuits and gravy. If you want a step up from IHOP/Shari's it can be hard to find. I remember the first time I visited Bernie's on Alberta in Portland. What a disappointment. ACME gets it right. The gravy is hearty without being too gelatinous. The biscuits are yeasty and cake-like instead of the typical mealy, pasty version. I made every person at my table take a bite and everyone loved them. I ate every bit of a full order and never felt like I'd overdone it. Just writing about it is making me hungry for more. Good restaurant food can be hard to find in Salem. ACME is a breath of fresh air. read more

This place has a comfortable and clean feel. The food was not very expensive. The sausage gravy and biscuits is claimed to be the best in town, but it has a somewhat peculiar flavor that we couldn't exactly identify. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy it. The waitress was a bit slow refilling our beverages even though it wasn't too busy and we sat right next to the open kitchen area. I would probably try lunch another time but I can't recommend it too highly. read more

In other words, great food at comparable prices. Instead, Acme Cafe appears to be aiming to be a cut above the Rock and Rogers down the street. Went in tonight with an open mind. I'd read both positive and negative reviews on this establishment. Were seated quickly enough. Hostess came and took a drink order which I thought was great, so far go good. Took longer than it should have for delivery of drink order. I ordered the Blackberry Mojito, it was AWFUL. Tasted like lime!! Was garnished with lemon and lime and was just weird. I two a couple of sips, passed it to my husband and he agreed, not good. I communicated to the waitress, she apologized and I ordered another drink, red wine this time. I figured you can't mess that up. Waited quite a while to place our dinner order and waited even longer for it to be delivered. We were on a birthday dinner so believe me, we weren't in a rush and it really seemed like forever for the food to come. I ordered the Parmesan Rockfish it was dry and had the crust uncooked on the sides. The smashed potatoes were bland and easily enough seasoned but I'd expected more from the reviews I'd read. The entree is supposed to come with two sides and a roll. Never got the roll but my husband did with his dish and didn't bother asking for one because it was pretty hard. I will say the good things were my sons shrimp and chips and my daughters chicken nuggets but really, who can't whip that out. Had to flag the waitress down to get the check and found she charged me for the drink I didn't drink. Oh well, I'm not one to make a fuss, I'll just never go back again and I'd caution those to want to try it out to be prepared. read more

Just finished a great lunch at a hopping NY Diner - oh wait it was ACME Cafe! Perfect, fresh food, great atmosphere and, according to Ron, a terrific Bloody Mary! This is truly Americana - the perfect, real diner - a bit of everything with friendly service and a fun time! This could easily become a hangout! After the new year, I see a field trip for deviled eggs, hot wings and martinis! In reading other reviews - I can only say wow- It is ok to sit near other people - you actually talk to them and be friendly - everyone was great to us!
