Mexi-Can Acopio is a phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes story, as this building was the original home of Lorena's Taqueria before a terrible fire in 2012 forced them to relocate to their new digs on N. 13th St. Wisely, the family held onto the property for years before their chef-trained daughter, and the restaurant's namesake, Lorena, decided to repurpose it into a contemporary, elevated Mexican restaurant, along with her also chef-trained brother and a few others whose combined oeuvre of experience includes Michelin-starred Chez TJ, Alexander's-by-the-Sea, and Naschmarkt, to name a few. The Good: * A small private lot, as well as street parking, is available. * Reservations via their website * Outdoor, dog-friendly seating * Great bar program with signature cocktails and a nice selection of local brews on tap * Small, curated menu that changes seasonally * Great service from our server, Jayleen * Costillas de Elote (aka corn ribs) may seem like a nothing dish, but man, it was bursting with flavor and was one of the (many) highlights of the night * The Carne en su Jugo was a great riff on a classic French cassoulet, but with a Mexi kick in flavor * I couldn't resist the Duck Mole dish, as it featured two of my favorite foods in one savory and delicious plate. The confit duck leg was fantastic and fell off the bone, and the sweet and savory chocolate mole was the perfect foil. However, to me, the unheralded star of the dish was the fried masa brick, done up like a classic potato pavé, which deserves a special shoutout * For dessert, their rendition of Tres Leches cake was fantastic! The crispy turulete (corn-based cookie) on top gave a nice crunch to go along with the sweet cake, and the tart notes from the green apples really tied it all together for a complex and delicious dessert The Meh: * Happy Hour (Wed-Sat, 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m., and all day on Sun) menu and drinks are limited to the bar area only * Only open for dinner * As many have noted, the neighborhood is a little sus, but honestly, it's not that bad. Just lock your car (as you should everywhere these days), and you'll be fine--I promise The Ugly: * The number of people I know--or have seen online--who hate on elevated Mexican cuisine is kinda crazy. As if only French or American cuisines are allowed to be fancy--it's honestly a bunch of bullshit. Saw Acopio on Apple Map's best SJ restaurant guide for some time now, always wanted to give them a try. The right time has some because we are celebrating our anniversary so we picked a quiet time and book a table to enjoy our dinner. To my surprise, the restaurant is not too big and it was pretty crowded when we arrived, I am so glad we booked a table or we might have to wait for sometime. They have a small lot in the back for parking but it can easily fill up. You are able to find street parking near by if their lot is filled. Their restaurant is on the smaller side. I wouldn't recommend coming with a large group unless you have a reservation. I ordered the duck and was high surprised at how delicious it was. Was looking for a happy hour place close by while our son was in golf lessons at Rancho del Pueblo in San Jose. Happen to find this local spot that was remodeled into an upscale Mexican restaurant. Happy hour is every day 5pm-6:30pm at the bar. The modern decor was lovely and the ambiance was friendly and inviting. We ordered a couple drinks that were very delicious, although still a bit expensive for happy hour. The elote was uniquely made but very tasty. I had Acopio bookmarked for months and nearly forgot about it until I started thinking hard about where to take a guest from out of town. Acopio looked very appealing, but I didn't expect that a Mexican-fusion restaurant on the east side of San Jose would be Michelin-worthy. Acopio's space is very well-kept and designed both festive and elegant. The service was attentive and clearly a point of pride, a stark contrast from my heartbreaking experience at True Laurel in SF last weekend where I waited for 30 minutes before a server came back to check on me. Each dish was artful, despite the simplicity of a dish such as Tacos Al Pastor, which consisted of pork confit, charred pineapple and fresh tortillas. The pork belly was marinated and seared to perfection. Together with a bit of tomatillo salsa, it was a unique elevated interpretation of Tacos Al Pastor that I'm already craving again. Each ingredient was meticulously marinated, charred and presented. The Tacos de Cachete was an interestingly textured dish, with pickled white onion pedals and beef cheek. A bit mushy but flavorful. On a second subsequent trip, I tried the Molé Poblano con Pierna de Pato & Chile Relleno. The duck was tender and perfectly seasoned. The molé was tangy and brighter than other molés that I have tried but it went well with the other components of the dish. The most impressive part was the Chile Relleno, which was made with a dried Pasilla chile that had a great chewy texture which was a pleasant surprise. It seemed more artfully crafted, would love to find out how they achieved that texture. The Coctel de Camarones had an unexpectedly familiar taste. Thai-style Tom Kha coconut and tomatillo broth with jicama and freshly peeled and de-veined prawns. Fantastic fusion dish. Finally, the chocolate churros and house-made Mexican chocolate ice cream also had a chili sauce on the ice cream with a nice kick to it. Acopio may be one of the finest restaurants in San Jose. We went with a mix of smaller plates and a large one to share family-style: - 1/2 dozen oysters: Pure buttery bliss. - Aguachile de callo de nacha: A MUST if you love scallops. It was so fresh and beautifully presented. - Tostada de Kampachi: Can skip. I'd probably go for their Tostada de Ceviche Colimense next time. - Costillas de Elote (Corn Ribs): YES. I'd order this every time. - Arroz Moreno con Mariscos: This was a surprise favorite. The rice reminds me of Korean nurungee with a seafood twist, and the cilantro herbs gave it that perfect blend. - Churros for dessert: The seasonal raspberry & lime sorbet on the side was the perfect touch. Churros were beautifully decorated and tasted like fruity pebbles. - For drinks: My friend enjoyed their Chardonnay Chenin Blanc, and I went for their zero-proof Corazon de Melon (cantaloupe-base with citrus mixed with their l'apertivo floreale made it the perfect summery beverage). Went here as a date night spot and thoroughly enjoyed our experience! Food (4.5/5): A bit on the more expensive side but super fresh and great quality. It's definitely a more modern take on Mexican food which was fun to try! The apps shined more brightly than the mains for me. My partner loved the lamb pasta and I loved the ceviche and chicharrones. The cocktails/mocktails were also super yummy. Service (5/5): Small but mighty restaurant staff! There were only a couple people working the floor but we felt well taken care of. Our waiter was able to answer all of our questions and give us recs to other spots he liked. I enjoyed the intimate experience! Ambiance (5/5): Small restaurant that's not good for groups bigger than 4. They can probably seat 20 people in total in the whole restaurant. While I've been here a couple times with my friends and enjoyed the atmosphere so I decided to surprise my man by treating him out to a place he hasn't been. While everything started off fine, we fell short of service and when the food came I was less impressed. After this experience. I think I'll be cooking at home from now on for our special occasion. We came for Valentine's Day for a pre-fixed menu at 6pm and didn't get out until 8pm. We even were sat 10 minutes early since we showed up early/on-time. Not sure what took so long when everything I'm sure was made ahead and of time. The salad was a great start. The farro risotto was just ok for me but my boyfriend really enjoyed it. The One scallop that took a while to come out was my least favorite. I didn't enjoy the texture and waited a while for the dishes to come after our rice which made me NOT enjoy the prefixed menu since we had to be on their time and they seem to have been falling behind . If they did have to make one thing, it may have been the scallop but how long does that even take?! Everything seemed like it took longer than expected and for over $100 a plate I will not come back after this experience unfortunately. Our dishes just didn't seem like it was worth the money. Each picture was more than $20 if you add everything, including the cup of corn water and NO drinks. Went here for Valentine's Day for their special Valentine's Day menu. The restaurant itself is located in an older area in downtown but they've remodeled the place and it looks great inside. We were promptly seated and our drink orders were taken. Cocktails came out relatively quickly and they were all good. We ordered the set menu with wine pairings. The meal started with 3 small bites - all pretty yummy and high end. The oyster was well cooked and having a little caviar was a nice start - but after the first course things started falling apart. Second course was a soggy, overcooked grilled cabbage. They managed to make it soggy and burnt at the same time. Wierd. Wine pairings came late and only after we asked for it. The final course was a mess. I ordered the duck confit chile relleno. The chile itself was burnt to a crisp - literally charred and inedible. The bits of duck inside dry. When I told the server he just sighed and took the plate - WOW! The steak course was supposed to be med-rare. It came out grey and overcooked. Again wine pairings came after the entrees. We were in a rush for a show - so didn't have time to let the restaurant remake the food. Left hungry, frustrated, and annoyed. I understand it was Valentine's Day- but they should have staffed better, and with the limited menu at least been able to cook the food properly. read more

I went here on a saturday with three friends. We had a reservation so we were seated pretty quickly. It is a small restaurant so I am not sure what the wait is like if you come in without reserving. I liked the size of the restaurant though because it gave it an intimate cozy ambience, especially with the yellow lights. Would be a really cute date location. There is a parking lot in the back, which is very nice, but it is a bit small so make sure to come early for parking. Food was alright to me. They were definitely unique and presentation was beautiful but some dishes were better than others. All of LOVED the pork tacos (TACOS de pancita al pastor) . Definitely would recommend. The icecream desserts were also very yummy and smooth. They weren't overly sweet and had very unique flavors. We let our waitress picked out the flavors and she did amazing! Other dishes were pretty good as well but we tried so many, and those were the two that stood out to me. The other dishes I wasn't too impressed with were the steak tacos and the appetizer (Tazón Botanero). A good verify of drinks on the menu, definitely a place to go for happy hour and small eats (or something larger if you're more hungry). The larger plates read out as imaginative and a beautiful blend of inclusion. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable on the food and gave a welcome in depth description of the dishes and ingredients involved. They also made accommodations to alter plates as necessary (ex. SUPER CUTE. What a total hidden gem! A friend of mine had recommended this place and I was so excited to check it out! Acopio has awesome service, great food, and is quite a lovely restaurant. To my surprise, the location is right next to downtown San Jose. (which am not the biggest fan of btw BUT..) Acopio makes you FEEL like you are in lovely area similar to Los Gatos. I especially like how they have their own personal parking lot that has automatic lights that turn on at night time that makes the area feel very safe, secure, and clean. We had called for last minute reservations and surprisingly they had lots of openings available. One of the first things I noticed was that the design of the restaurant is very pristine, modern, clean, and trendy. They also have a very interesting colorful bar right when you walk in. Very cool! All of the servers we had were so super kind, caring, and nice. They also gave us a little background story on the restaurant and how long it's been here. Very nice! We decided to order lots of different dishes in order to get an idea/feel for the restaurant. We ordered the Costillas De Elote (Corn Ribs), Tortillas de casa, Ceviche Tostadas, and Al Pastor (pork) tacos. OMG! I am so absolutely in love with the Al Pastor tacos. They were literally so delicious and amazing! I really love how they added in unique toppings like pineapple, jalapeños, and unique garnishes that brought the whole dish together. These are legitimately some of the BEST tacos that I have ever had. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I also was super excited to try out the Costillas De Elote (Corn Ribs) as well because I had noticed the beautiful photos from their Yelp page and this really caught me eye. This dish is great as well. It features a twist on Mexican street corn that is sliced up to make a unique and classy design. All of the dishes were beautifully placed and put together in unique fashion. Bonus points for aesthetics as well as great taste! lol. I loved the Ceviche as well. It was absolutely delicious and super yummy. The taste is unique and light. My only complaint would be that the ceviche was basically a tostada cut in half where other restaurants usually have a big bowl of ceviche as a starter to dip into. So keep in mind that this is a tiny appetizer when ordering. The Tortillas de casa were honestly very skippable. I'm not sure if we were supposed to add something to it? but it only came with beans, salsa, and queso fresco. I'm guessing maybe we were supposed to add something? But there was no add one or recommendations. This dish was a little confusing and plain.. lol. For dessert we got the Tres leches cake. It was beyond amazing. Sadly I totally forgot to take a photo of it because it was so it looked absolutely PERFECT lol. The desert was so creamy and beautifully made. It wasn't overpowering and you could definitely taste the high-quality ingredients that went into making it. (&This is saying A LOT because I usually am not too crazy about Tres Leches cakes. lol.) The food is elevated cuisine. Clever, tasty and nicely presented. I had their duck leg confit with mole sauce and stuffed pepper. Very pretty and quite tasty. The restaurant is quite noisy due to the floors, tables and sound reflecting hard surfaces, which hindered the service. I ordered a bottle of wine and 4 glasses, instead they delivered 4 glass of wine and no bottle. Corrected but it took time away from eating and chatting. They did make an attempt to make up for it by giving us some Mezcal on the house, thoughtful, but we were not really the best audience for it. Friendly staff however, despite a few dropped balls. The red wine we did get was a varietal I'd never had before. Italian grape I believe, a 'Nebbiolo' which was hands down the best Mexican red wine I've ever had! This was my first time here and I came during happy hour. I sat at the bar and was served immediately. The drinks were great. They have wine, beer, cocktails, nonalcoholic drinks, and juegos. The food came out fast and we're visually spectacular! I think I ordered everything on the happy hour menu and could barely snap a photo before digging in. There is a small parking lot and outdoor seating . The restaurant is in an unassuming neighborhood. When you walk into the restaurant you are instantly transported into a five star restaurant! My wife and I came here for a date night. Sat at a nice cozy table by the kitchen. Although not a big fan of the high chairs, the location of the table was perfect and not directly in the dining room. A huge bonus for having a private parking lot - otherwise 50/50 I would have came here being it is downtown SJ. Staff was friendly and offered explanations of menu items to us. We ordered the sopes, corn ribs, potatoes, beef sugo and pork tacos. Everything was well seasoned, flavorful and very clean. The beef sugo was extremely flavorful and delicious. All in all, we were very happy with the food. For the prices on the menu - I have a few detailed comments about the food and garnishes but these are my personal observations. I will reserve those to myself, and keep it positive. In addition to the food, we had three alcoholic drinks and they were just okay - two paloma's and a margarita. Considerably too much ice in my opinion, which made the drink even less strong and more watery. It's possible we will be back. We are so disappointed. We just got back from a Valentine's Day prix fixe meal at this place. Two years ago, we were here for a Valentine's Day meal as well and were quite satisfied, which is why we returned. But Acopio is not what it used to be. It was always expensive but this time, we paid a little over $300 for a mostly small portioned, low protein, low cost ingredient, almost entirely plant-based meal. It was touted as a six course meal, but the courses were very small. As an example, the corn consommé was a warm half cup of water boiled with a little bit of salt and corn perhaps. Nothing else that we could taste or see. Our server told us it was a palate cleanser (though that was not mentioned in the menu). The one beef tamal was very dry and tasteless with teeny tiny strings of beef. There was a sauce but it wasn't very tasty. The second course was a nettle and Farro cup. Just all carb. The opening salad was spears of endive, with 2 small slices of grapefruit or orange(?), some dressing and pumpkin seeds for us to share. Too much endive and it needed something else. The highlights were the single scallop with sauce and a little bit of chorizo as well as as the pink guava Pavlova dessert (dessert was the best part). We did order a $16 House margarita which was in a small standard dessert wine glass that was nothing special and underwhelming. Acopio was very busy so we understand why the service was slow. Our seating took almost 2 hours. We came home still hungry and are eating again. We are so sad that Acopio has come to this. read more

In general, I would absolutely like to praise the cocktails/bar and variety of options on that front. I loved my drink and I now know they have a solid spicy margarita! They make their own jalapeño syrup in house. I had a cocktail made with mezcal, which is usually not a liquor I go for, but it was so well done and dynamic/memorable. The space itself is very clean and modern, with its own small private parking lot. In terms of food, overall, I do think that there is room for improvement. I ordered the pork belly tacos ($15 for 3 small tacos). Maybe it was just that day, but the pork was pretty dry and not as salty as I'd expect. The tacos came already dressed in a very light green salsa and with some cut up citrus, but were just pretty plain. I think adding a side of chips and salsa or even the ability to mix and match tacos in an order, or add a side of rice-- might be a nice improvement. Our group shared the elote and potatoes as appetizers-- I tried just the corn and it was good. Seems like they have changed the presentation slightly from photos a while back on here to more recently (July 2024). Our group also ordered and shared the tres leches cake that looked very nice, but is probably best for sharing with two people max. My partner ordered the fried chicken cutlet and was happy with the portion size, but did not realize that it would not come with much else in terms of sides-- all would have had to be ordered a la carte (i.e. tortillas, rice perhaps). Again, "plain" was the lasting impression. The food leaves something more to be desired, so for that reason I am rating this place 3 stars after my first visit. read more

Loved the service we received. The waitress showed great enthusiasm towards how passionate the owners and staff were to making and presentation of the food. The ambience was fine, but we arrived maybe about an hour after they opened, so things hadn't really started up being busy at that point. By the time we were finishing our Tres Leches dessert (which was beyond amazing....highly recommended!!!) people were starting to fill the place up. I imagine that it gets pretty loud once the restaurant gets over half filled. If you prefer a more chill atmosphere, probably look to get there once they're just opened up for the night. We returned here last night for a pre Valentines dinner. We arrived early and had a nice lingering dinner since we haven't gotten out much this past year. The food was perfection- there is so much love and thoughtfulness in each plate. We ordered: A few cocktails- my favorite was the Oaxaca Old Fashioned- if you love Mezcal and tequila, this is the drink to order. Smokey but light and a great sipping cocktail to accompany the meal. Half dozen oysters- fresh and bright, so delicious and a perfect starter Papas doradas- the chorizo was light and perfectly paired with the fried potatoes (which weren't heavy fried, but just toasty and crunchy enough) Arroz moreno con mariscos- a full and hearty plate in the tradition of paella but lighter. The octopus was cooked perfectly. Milanesa ala Cesar- this was a different take on the cesar salad-- it was so delicious and filling! The chicken cutlet was juicy but thin enough to not overpower the texture of the lettuce. And the anchovies added just enough saltiness and umami flavor. I'm usually not a fan of dill, but the dill on this salad/cutlet was perfectly paired with the lettuce and the amazing poblano sauce that served as the dressing (on side). It's not the traditional cesar salad-- in my opinion, this was such an elevated take on it. Desert: The Milohas-- OMG this was so decadent and light at the same time. If you love guava and creamy cheesy sweet flavors, this is the desert for you. It was a big serving so definitely enough for two. The Vibes: The best part of dining here is the wide variety of folks who come in. Last night it got pretty packed given the Valentines holiday vibes, but in general, when we've eaten here we've been surrounded different folks- families, couples, and small parties. We saw one young couple walk in from the surrounding neighborhood and they sat next two a group of elderly women who were dropped off in an uber and clearly out for a Galentines type dinner (Yes, I'm a people watcher). Although the place is small, it doesn't feel loud or busy or chaotic. We made some recommendations to the family sitting next to us when the teens were eyeballing our deserts and it was a great conversation starter. But we also continue to return to this restaurant because it offers an important and rich culinary experience in a neighborhood that is dear to my heart. No matter where folks live, we all deserve a gathering place that offers balanced and delicious plates and an aesthetically pleasing, beautiful space that is welcoming of all people. It is also special that this restaurant offers a dining experience grounded in the culinary traditions of Mexico, offering new flavors and recipes with traditional ingredients. The plates are prideful and rich, but also new and different. This restaurant is not out of place- it is exactly where is should be. I hope you can visit at least once and bring a friend. The wait staff is generous and thoughtful and you will definitely feel like coming back after your first visit. We gotta protect gems like this because our communities deserve them. read more

Food and service were excellent! Some of our favorite dishes were the corns ribs, lamb ragu and pavlova (dessert). As a person who doesn't really eat lamb, I found myself scooping more on my plate. There was one negative of the night - our churro was undercooked. The dough was still raw. We tried telling our server but it didn't seem like he understood so we left it. I'm pretty disappointed that my favorite dish--mushroom tacos--at Acopio has changed. It used to be build your own taco with a generous portion of roasted mushrooms. Now, the portions are a lot less. I would prefer to just pay more to build my own tacos. read more

This is the kind of elevated food with really thoughtful ingredients and presentation that you find in Mexico City and Los Angeles. San Jose needs more beautiful places like this for us to enjoy a thrilling and unique experience. They also have a terrific happy hour from five to 6:30 PM with a full bar. And while it's a busy street they have plenty of offstreet parking. Please make sure you try the duck with mole. I also really enjoyed the flan. Acopio is such a gem! We made a same-day reservation for Friday evening, but probably didn't need one because every time slot was available. When we arrived at 6PM, the restaurant was mostly empty, but quickly got busier as the night went on. The interior was modern and stylish, with a beautiful bar and cool lighting fixtures. They also had some (dog friendly) outdoor seating by the entrance. For drinks, I chose the Xicaru and my friend got the Alebrije. I loved the Xicaru so much! It wasn't too sweet and you could really taste the jalapeño, but it didn't overpower the cocktail. The Alebrije was great too, but my friend ended up switching to the Xicaru for his second round. For food, we ordered a bunch of items to share - the Costillas de Elote (a MUST order), Ostiones Asadas (absolutely delicious), Pipian Verde con Pato (also a must, such great flavors), and Al Pastor de Camaron (probably the most forgettable dish, but still tasty). I was genuinely blown away by the quality of the food, and the beautiful presentation. The menu was also small, so I felt like I got to try everything. For dessert, we shared the Tarta Agria, which I was also obsessed with. I generally love lemon tarts, but this one was like a cross between a lemon tart and creme brûlée - so tasty! Acopio is a jewel that deserves to be recognized widely and celebrated! Clearly a labor of love by the wonderful Lorena and family who also own Taqueria Lorena, Acopio serves Michelin quality food without the pretentiousness or the exorbitant prices of such. From the moment you walk in, you know you are in a special place that belies the more humble surroundings. The decor is bright, warm and modern. You can also sit outside and do Al Fresco dining if you please. Marshall, the ex-Alexander's steakhouse chef has been inspired by the modern Mexican food served at world renowned Pujol and Quintonil in Mexico City who consistently make the worlds best restaurant list. We get to benefit from his passion because his food is inspired, surprising both in both looks and taste and... is delicious. Same with the drinks. Everything we had was delectable and rave worthy. My new favorite restaurant in the area, I will be coming back on a regular basis and introducing it to friends and family alike. Please go and enjoy this passion project of Lorena and Marshall. Acopio is truly a Bay Area gem and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves for the delicious food, creative drinks, stunning decor, lovely staff, and awesome vibes. First off, the food was incredible (mushroom tacos were an unexpected favorite and you have to order the Pastel De Tres Leches De Fresas for dessert). As a group of four, we ordered and loved: - Tostada De Kanpanchi (kanpachi tartare with delicious toppings, definitely a must try) - Costillas De Elote (corn ribs, my friend who doesn't like corn loved these) - Mole Poblano Con Pato (duck with an incredible chocolate chile mole) - Breaded Pork Cutlet (this thing was HUGE) - Tacos De Champignones (mushroom tacos and these were a surprise find! I usually go for meat dishes but ordered these on a whim, highly recommend). - Pastel De Tres Leches De Fresas (the prettiest and best dessert I've had at a restaurant in a while.
