Have been meaning to try this place for some time, and went in last night (Wednesday) and really enjoyed it. First off, the service was fantastic. Several people interacted with us at different points - never overbearing - and all were absolutely friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. A+ on the service. Second, the cocktail list is really modern and creative, while still somehow feeling very traditionally Mexican. My partner had the Una Vez en la Playa - a very refreshing concoction of Mezcal, watermelon, lime and fennel. I had the La Fogata - a smoky and warm cocktail of Mezcal, bourbon, cinnamon syrup and black walnut bitters. Sort of turning an Old Fashioned on its head. Very good. We went all-in on too many starters - hey it wasn't just a Wednesday, it was my partner's Birthday! We started with the Tortillas de Casa, four fresh housemate tortillas and an array of accompaniments; queso fresco, whole black beans, chipotle salsa, and this amazingly fruity, sweet and spicy gooseberry salsa. More tortillas, please. Next we went through some napkins while nibbling on the Costillas de Elote, little street corn 'ribs'. Delicious, messy, and worth it. Finally we indulged in cheese...because CHEESE...with the Panela a la Plancha, a nice portion of panela cheese seasoned and grilled, and topped with the star of the dish - tomatillo jam. A solid and indulgent start to the evening, and all paired well with our cocktails. For our entrees, my partner had the Callos Incrustados con Chicharron - chicharron crusted scallops with a roasted poblano creme and baby fennel. Delicious bites, especially with all elements together. I feel the scallops could have been soaked/cleaned a little better, as I found them to have some grit. But they were very tasty. I had the Pipan Rojo con Pato, the confit duck leg with red mole and a seared masa cake. Incredibly tender, flavorful, and well-executed dish. My only issue with this one is that the dish was garnished with some peas - which seemed to distract from the other elements and had a similar texture to the deeply-roasted baby carrots. Leave the peas off and maybe throw some fresh herbs or micro greens on there instead. Overall, a great experience that we both enjoyed. Will most definitely return again. read more

Drinks ordered - -La fogata - tastes mostly like whiskey with a tiny hint of other subtle flavors but they were too subtle. It needs stronger mexican flavors to make it unique. -El Milpero - nothing special. Same thing, nothing makes it unqiue or special. We had another cocktail as well, forgot the name, flavor is the same though, nothing special. Food ordered: -Corn - This was actually good! -Red lentil soup w/ jalapeno and spices- this was very good. Everyone enjoyed it. Warm and comforting. -Steak - dry and stiff. The sear and the seasoning used was nice. Need better quality meat though. Pet peeve of mine when I pay more for a steak in a nice restaurant but they give poor quality meat. -Duck - This was good, but just tastes like ordinary duck. Didn't taste much of the "mexican" to make it unique. (Do you notice a theme...) -Tacos - 3 al pastor tacos- good! Good meat, marinate, and we asked for salsa and they gave us habanero salsa which was very good as well (medium spicy/sweet, ) 1 crab tempura taco - didn't taste much crab. The tempura part was nicely fried. This taco cost $15. (-_-) Bone Marrow- not good enough, not creamy at all. Service-good service, waiter and waitress that came by were very nice and attentive. Ambiance - it's a nice place...a little small but it's decorated nice and the bar area also looks nice. Overall: Pricey and the food doesn't live up to it. We left without feeling like we ate mexican food. A lot of the foods/drinks didn't have much flavor. I wanted to love this restaurant - a family-run restaurant on the edge of East San José serving upscale Mexican cuisine. I left just liking it, bothered mostly by a menu that didn't quite distinguish which dishes contained dairy. I had my heart set on the duck, but it had to be modified because there still was dairy in the dairy-free dish. I would have ordered something else. I found this newer joint while scrolling through OpenTable and it did not disappoint. Immediately upon entering, the waitress knew who I was and that I had a reservation (impressive!). We were sat immediately and given a choice between two tables. It's not a large venue but the table was for 4 and gave us plenty of privacy. The interior was very clean, modern but tastefully decorated. Our waitstaff was attentive and very polite. My fiancé and I both had a bebida prohibida which our waitress told us was made with fresh passion fruit they grow on site! Great drink! My second drink was a beer mixed with tepache (I believe fermented pineapple) and that was super refreshing! It definitely tasted like a chavela with a little more sweetness from the tepache. Right up my alley! Now on to the best part, the food! The corn ribs and broiled oysters were our favorite. Both were amazing and we both wouldn't go back without ordering them. The bone marrow was good but nothing that set it over the top. My fiancé got the steak and I got the duck confit. Both were very good! The duck was tender, juicy and accompanied by pomegranate seeds, a chili and green sauce. All the flavors came together beautifully! We shared the candied winter squash for dessert. It was very different but in a good way! It's not your usual overly sweet, cloying, sugar bomb that American fare lends itself to. The winter squash was fresh and paired well with a creamy yogurt. My favorite part was the pumpkin seed brittle! Very good. We've been here twice now and it's incredible. From the service to unique delicious dishes and drinks. I recommend the chipotle butter broiled oysters, corn ribs, duck confit, vegetable tacos, and the steak--which was expertly prepared. Also the entire restaurant is naturally gluten free except for one of the battered tempura tacos. It's our favorite restaurant that we've been to in San Jose, tucked into a unique local neighborhood not far from downtown. Easy parking behind the restaurant is also a nice bonus. San Jose is so lucky to have Acopio. Everything from the service to the food/drink were perfect for our anniversary / birthday dinner. The owners, Ralph and Lorena, stopped by to say hello and make sure everything was going well. They put so much care into designing a space with a modern yet cozy vibe. We were down in a neighborhood in San Jose we didn't know at all to pick up the kid, so decided to find a local restaurant to try out. Acopio is an upscale modern Mexican restaurant that might seem a little out of place in the area, but its owners have lifelong ties to the neighborhood. The food... Costillas de Elote - "Corn Ribs" is what they're called and yeah that's what it's like. Imagine corn on the cob cut into quarters such that you nibble the kernels off the quarter-cob. Okay, that's quirky, but this new take on street corn is yummy, if a little messy to eat. Panela a la Plancha - Grilled panela cheese with tomatillo jam. I'm a sucker for grilled cheese. Escabeche - House pickles are a nice simple munchable. Ceviche de Cameron - Pretty good shrimp ceviche. Salmon Aguachile - Very pretty dish made with salmon, cucumber, trout roe. They're nice bites but not terribly exciting and not that much food. Pipian Verde con Pato - Duck confit done adobo style. Well cooked and constructed plate, probably the best thing I ate this night. Capirotada - Coffee and chocolate bread pudding. Excellent flavor, but we found the inclusion of whole coffee beans in the pudding to not be the best choice. They had inconsistent textures and detracted a bit from the overall experience. Still delish though. Overall, the food was very good. But not quite great. There's a lot here to like, and if I lived nearby I'm sure I'd be heading back to experience their growth. read more

We heard about this restaurant on Instagram. We've had our eye to come in and finally had the opportunity to do so and celebrate our Anniversary. Immediately when we walked in we were greeted and asked if we had a reservation and we didn't and that wasn't a problem as we were the only ones there at the moment. Also tip (go as soon as the open) we noticed a lot of consumers walking in shortly after we were done. The oysters were AMAZING & the side salt cucumber garnish was DELICIOUS! Funny thing is we were only coming for drinks but saw other people ordering Tacos Arabe and OMG, they smelled so good so we ordered one each and let me just say WOW! We were so excited to find this new family-owned restaurant in East Side San Jose. They just opened early January and are the same owners as Lorena's Taqueria. They built the restaurant at the same location where the original Lorena's used to be as this particular location is very meaningful to their family. A modern twist to Mexican cuisine. Affordable fine dining. Casual, yet upscale. I really love the concept of the restaurant. It has an open dining room that's very welcoming. The ambiance takes me away to Mexico City. My favorite things from the menu are: - Aguachile: I normally have shrimp aguachile, so I was very intrigued this was made of scallops. I can't even explain the flavor, but after one bite, I found myself salivating from the red chile liquid. The marinaded cucumbers, serrano pepper, pickled onion, roe added to a perfect bite. I only wish there was more of this. - Mole de pato: The duck is cooked so well, it fell off the bone. I'm not a mole person :( but I really enjoyed the pistachio mole. And that masa cake - wow, so soft. - Bone Marrow: This comes with two bone marrows and two homemade tortilla with a side salad. You scrape the marrow into the tortilla, add the salad, roll it up, and eat! It's really different but the tortilla pairs so well with the butteriness of the marrow and the salad gives it a refreshing flavor. Used to love this place but the owner seems determined to ruin it. They've entirely done away with or changed the recipes to some of the best items on their menu, rendering much of the food bland and flavor-less, increased prices and reduced portions, and instituted a truly insufferable comedy night on Thursdays (getting heckled while going to a restaurant to eat dinner is rarely going to make people return.) Please be cautious about this restaurant. The service was absolutely terrible and outright hostile and aggressive. I have never had this type of an experience anywhere before. Three key issues: 1. We ordered appetizers. We asked for an extra blue Tortilla with one of the appetizers (not for free) and they said that the Chef would not do it. We had to order an extra dish just to get extra Tortillas. Very inflexible. 2. Two of us ordered a vegetarian dish each and they brought the two orders together in one bowl. They claim they serve everything community style but they never told us. I wonder if they are just trying to save money by giving smaller portions and calling that family style. The manager came to our table to aggressively tell us that this is how they serve. I guess she felt that she was setting us straight! 3. After this, the hostess came and told us that we had to leave in 15 minutes since there was another customer coming for the same table. THis was in spite of the restaurant not being half full. I have never ever had a restaurant tell me that I have to leave in a set time. 4. The more I tried to get the manager to see that they are really being inhospitable the more argumentative she got. I don't think they understand what customer service means and that the customer should be treated well. Something not quite ok about them. They seem to get lots of local latinos and I noticed they were nice to them. I think they noticed that perhaps we were not local or Latino and did not care about us at all. Truly shocking experience. I am usually very careful not to write negative reviews of restaurants as I know that these are small business owners who are working hard to build their business. It's cool to see Mexican food presented so upscale, minimalistic and using various culinary techniques. You're seeing this at Luna, Puesto, Zazil. My question for this restaurant is why they decided to place this location in a neighborhood where down the street you can get authentic Mexican at Super Taqueria for half the price, as opposed to the wealthier sides of town like the other restaurants I listed. Granted you don't get the level of attention to the ingredients and preparation - but how do you expect the surrounding area to enjoy your food when you're pricing them out? The star of the what we ordered were the tacos. We tried one of each of the offerings and they were definitely very unique and had great flavor. The vegetal is definitely the most unique, with the instant, yet subtle mushroom flavor the second you bite into it. We must have ate all the foods! MANDA BEAR literally ordered all the menu (I don't eat dessert or salad at a restaurant, at least I don't order it myself)! Costillas de Elote - Fried corn 'ribs' topped with mayo, queso, chile salt, salsa mache - I like it enough to order second one.... Very good, but I don't need the extra SALT! Lobster Taco - Puerto Nuevo style lobster tail, smashed beans, charred cabbage slaw - perfectly grilled, big chunk of lobster (o don't need the smashed beans).. ask for that SPICY sauce, hot AF goodness! I LICKED THE BOWL! No shame! Mushroom Taco - Marinated hibiscus and mushroom with chile aioli, cilantro and pepita pesto, queso - I enjoyed this VEGETARIAN TACO a lot! So much flavor and texture! Another VALUABLE dish! Hangar Steak - Chile salt rubbed flat iron steak served over smashed papas and grilled chayote, topped with salsa verde and charred lime - perfectly cooked MED RARE, love the chayote (a veggies that Vietnamese people often cook in soul, but never grilled!) I thought that was a nice touch, something the main stream folks don't see it on the menu, almost ever in my dining-out experience! DO NOT CHANGE this :-) Lamb Birria - Slow braised birria marinated lamb shank served in consume, topped with onions, pickled onions and cilantro. Served with house tortillas. I suck on that bone food! The broth was perfect, wish I had some bread or rice to SOAK UP that sauce! A solid cocktail list around $14 each. Might be high for this part of town, but good quality of drinks! LA EX cocktail - Blanco, Pineapple, Jalapeno, Cilantro was solid. Glenlivet 12 for $12, a lot of beer, 1 Mexican wine, corkage fee allowed! Soft opening, hiccup services, long wait on food, but this was a very IMPRESSIVE for soft-opening, give them a month or 2, I bet things will only get better! Minimalist decor, small bar, TV to watch ball games, NO RESERVATION! You order the food, take a number, and sit down to wait for the servers to drop off the food... It might be a turn off for some family pants folks! It can get chaotic, because you can't really order the food if no table to sit down! I hope the will work this out logistically! I love the patio for Al fresco dining, the rain kind of get in the way this week but I'm sure in the future, it would be awesome! This is probably 1 of the handful nicest restaurants/bars in the East Side SJ. They have their private parking lot, which is cool! It's dark in this area at night, so drive safe! Lyft/Uber is always an option if you drink! Dog friendly outdoor if it's not raining and when the weather is nicer, no heater yet! Come for the food! This was our first visit to Acopio. We enjoyed all the food we tried and were able to speak with Lorena (the owner). Items tried Costillas de elote. Basically Mexican street corn flavor with a great red spicy salsa. It was a favorite of the night. Ostiones asados. Well prepared, maybe a bit more heat would be good, but no complaints. Ensalada de tomate. This was excellent. We loved the taste of the heirloom tomatoes with the dressing, pumpkin seeds, and the goat cheese. Carnitas. This was the highlight for me. I love carnitas and these were super tasty pork belly carnitas with the freshly made tortillas. So good. Pipián verde con pato. For me, this was not that great but my wife loved it. The sweetness of the raspberry gastrique threw me off, but it hit as a home run for my wife. We are definitely coming back. read more

I want to preface this by saying that the service was great and I have no complaints about the waitstaff at all. They were so friendly and helpful. I think this place is a victim of instagram hype, unfortunately. The pricing and the food did not match up in terms of taste/quality. We were left semi-full but unsatisfied after we left. Outdoor seating is not recommended at all. It's in the middle of a neighborhood with auto shops around the corner. The street is very busy with buses, angry drivers honking, and cars spewing exhaust. Parking was impossible on a Friday night. We parked about two and a half blocks down the road. The pork belly taco was mediocre. The pork belly was room temperature and dry, with very minimal seasoning, and a single piece of orange on each taco. No sides included. The flan was very bad. The texture was rubbery and it was overwhelmed with rum. The churro fell apart as we picked it up. It was undercooked and very mushy. (We got this one comped). It's in a neighborhood where so many authentic Mexican restaurants are around, that it's hard not to long for the real thing. It comes off as very pretentious and it seems like gentrification starting to creep in. read more

We had walked into a random restaurant while strolling the area. El Alto closed down, so by the looks of it, the food seemed ok. we ordered: shrimp taco corn appetizer fresh oysters steak 12oz menu cocktails glass of wine beer Food: Overall, the food was not too bad. The first tortilla that came with the shrimp was a bit crispy and hard but charging 30 bucks for 4 pieces of regular shrimp. and i asked for salsa which they charged extra for. (which is fine but, they could have mentioned it) Corn was awesome. Try it. Oysters were fresh better than kings fish. Succulent, big, yummy! Steak- a bit dry. tough on the meat. I do think potatoes would be better. I ordered extra salsa .. what mexican does not have good legit salsa.. pico de gallo? no? which came with a side of tortillas (happened to be softer than the actual tortilla that came with the shrimp tacos...) I did not ask for tortillas but just salsa, so I was like what ever. But then the order came out to be charged for the salsa on the side and for the salsas and the tortillas for ten dollars.. That was okay. Didn't mind it too much. But then, I ordered the margarita. you cannot skip the margarita at a mexican restaurant! I asked the server for a skinny margarita which the bartender did not know what it was or didn't know how to make it. I would have expected them to ask the type of tequila prior to the order. But 20 dollars for a casa amigos margarita? I paid 25 dollars to make a margarita with don julio reposado at flemmings. The cocktail price should have been notified, but overall, it was ok. I was just a little confused about where some of the pricing comes from. Salsa should be noted to be extra on the menu. A reply back with "most restaurants with sour cream charge extra too." isnt the best response. Ambience is good. Bathrooms does not have paper towels. read more

Acopio is a revamped location by the same owners of Lorena's Taqueria. This Mexican gourmand Eastside restaurant is a gem with craft cocktails and an exquisite menu. We sampled their broiled oysters with butter, lime & chipotle and house made corn tortillas for starters. The tortillas come with four dressings: salsa, queso fresca, refried beans & spicy guacamole. For entrees we went with the duck confit leg with pistachio mole and masa cake. Slow cooked duck was melt in your mouth accented by a mild pistachio mole. Definitely a highlight. I tried their Lebanese lamb taco and their seafood taco. The lamb taco was a nice surprise. The seafood taco was tart, but overly spicy with bbq shrimp. Don't forget to try their craft cocktails. I had a balanced bourbon tamarind drink that I could've stayed with for the evening. Upscale Mexican dining on the Eastside? What a concept! Highly recommended! . read more

This cozy restaurant offers a small but high quality selection of dishes. Everything was great but the standouts were the Al pastor and the scallops. Both items went well with their tortillas. Also excellent selection of cocktails to choose from. The staff was super friendly and attentive despite the busy period. We never felt rushed. Restaurant is loud if that matters to you. A unique standout amongst the myriad of Mexican options. It isn't your typical cheap fare but the quality of food and service makes up for it. Food and service was pretty good. This restaurant was in our neighborhood so we were excited to try it. I think they could definitely improve their cocktails. Also the menu was in tiny font size and the menu options were a little too restrictive. That being said we enjoyed all our starters. 2 of us had the steak for mains which was average at best. Place is a little bright and noisy for my liking. So wanted to like this new neighborhood restaurant but it did not live up to my expectations read more
