I am totally blown away at how excellent this place is. Everything is so fresh and crispy and yummy. The salad dressings were incredibly good, ask for the lemon vinegrette. This brightly lit small restaurant is a delight and is just what is needed in this part of Marin. They just opened recently and I am very pleased to see it already popular. It was my first time here I was greeted by a friendly staff and saw that their menu was extensive. No greasy fried food just healthy and real. It was delicious and the portions were large. [non-vegetarian reviewer!] Delicious and full of flavors, plus a friendly staff. We shared the breakfast burrito and a quesadilla. Add the special sauce for $1~ it's a tahini~ish spice and delicious. I typically eat a lot of meat, but did not think the burrito was lacking at all. Rather than use a "meat substitute," they filled it with a variety of flavors and textures and it was fantastic and filling. Followed up with a milkshake. Most importantly this place has truly delicious food! Even better, there is something for everyone in our family which can be hard due to various food allergies. We sampled the kid's burrito, one of the bowls (I think it was called East/West), frozen yogurt and a smoothie. It was all great! The bowl was big enough that I could save a portion for lunch and it held up really well. The frozen yogurt was wonderful with four flavors (chocolate, vanilla, sea salt caramel & pomegranate raspberry) to choose from and toppings. Active Culture is one of my favorite places for lunch or breakfast in Marin. Each item is prepared with care, and the consistency is excellent! Ingredients are chopped to perfection. Whether I take it to go or sit in the beautiful patio, it's always a treat! read more

This place has the potential to be really great but doesn't quite get there. We really enjoyed breakfast here, with the free refills on good coffee, but the last couple of months we noticed a shift. A couple of times they didn't have milk or cream for the coffee (and there is a grocery store two doors down) and the last several weeks coffee was unavailable, the machine was broken. And the staff has also missed on orders a couple times. They are nice but seem to not care too much and lacking management. It seems others have also noticed...it's a beautiful Sunday morning and the place is mostly empty while the coffee shop next door has a line out the door. I hope they can do a little better, could be a really great breakfast spot. read more

Apparently, if you don't tip when you're placing a To Go order they will leave your food sitting on the counter and not call your name. The first time it happened I thought I just missed my name being called. The second time it happened I knew they had not called my name but figured it was a fluke. But the third time it happened I knew it was on purpose. I sat right across from the counter where the registers are and the food is placed. I sat and waited and waited and waited. Finally, I went up and asked if that was my food sitting on the counter. I was told it was. I asked why they didn't call my name and the girl said she did. But I told her I was sitting right across from the register, maybe 8 feet away and it was quiet as there wasn't many people in the restaurant and she got a funny look on her face and said," Oh I guess I should've said it louder." So be warned. On top of it, everything was very wet in my salad. It was like they washed the lettuce off in a bowl of water and just picked it up and put it in the to go container without drying it off. Very disappointed in the service and the food. read more

Really tasty and great to have some healthy options in Novato. I've been 3 times now and will be back again to try more. I've had 2 of the bowls which were really flavorful and filing and then had the huevos on another occasion, which was also very good. Will definitely be back to continue trying more on the menu. We lived on Active Culture in Laguna . But A.C. Novato is such a let down . The bowls are unreliable. One day they are passing, the next day they are bad, and never are they great. Your rice cooker should be retired. read more

My husband and I moved to the Bay Area from Laguna Beach last year. One of the saddest parts of leaving laguna was saying goodbye to our favorite dinner spot, Active Culture! We attempted multiple times to recreate their bowls at home with minor success. When they opened the Novato location we could not believe it!! We've made the 45 minute trek from Walnut Creek to Novato on multiple occasions for the Wholesome Bowl and LB Rice Bowl (I think it's called the Bay Bowl at this location). Soooo good! Great place-healthy yummy food and large portions. I love the kale salad. My child always orders the açaí bowl and it is really refreshing.
