We have used AKB for a kitchen remodel (5 years ago), master bath remodel (2 years ago), and another bath remodel (this summer). For all three projects, we've had a positive experience working with the owner (Johans), lead designer (Michele), construction lead, and all of the other specialized workers. And in the end, the kitchen and two bathrooms look great and function well. As with many remodeling projects, there were some issues. However, AKB fixed everything to our satisfaction. Our only complaint would be how long our last project took. To be fair though, everyone we know who has remodeled their home in the past few years has had a similar complaint (and many other worse complaints!), due to the current labor shortage. We would definitely recommend AKB, and we would use them again if we do anymore remodeling in the future. My review comes over a year after the actual remodeling has been completed. What triggered my feedback was handling by AKB minor warranty issues that came up in the last 2 months. They handled it promptly and very well. Since my remodel over a year ago AKB has gone through a lot of changes. They had ownership change and also personnel changes. Going back to actual remodeling I want to highlight a few positive things. My experience with AKB was generally positive. They employ good people who are very respectful, friendly and especially skillful in trades. Its been over a year, but I still admire quality of work that was put in. I have done remodeling of the entire house from ceiling to floors. Bathrooms, Kitchen, plumbing, wall moving, wall texturing, paint entire house, door replacing, floors refinishing and more. All employees and subcontractors did a quality job. The only issue I had, was with the prior manager (Sean) due to work delays, cost overruns (due to change orders) and some forced payment schedule, but that's not new to any job of such a magnitude. We have resolved it amicably. Overall, I would recommend AKB and would work with them again. Very happy with our bathroom remodel Summary Excellent quality work. Competitive prices. Office staff and tradespeople are professional and responsive. My wife and I are delighted with the work they did for us and are glad we went with American Kitchen and Bath (AKB). The total cost of the job was within 8% of the originally quoted price, including allowance overages and unexpected additions. I recommend AKB as a company that does the job well and provides prompt service for a reasonable price. Read on if you want details. Scope of work We had two bathrooms remodeled at the same time. As part of the process, we had non-load bearing walls moved to make the master bath larger. Sinks and showers were moved. We also had the sewer pipe under the house replaced. Bid and contract I took bids from over 5 contractors, and there were wide variations in price and level of detail. Most bids were around the same price and one was ridiculously high (twice the others). AKB's estimate was the lowest of the bunch, but looked reasonable. After initial talks, the sales/estimating team prepared an extremely detailed bid--around 7 pages. The bid and contract included detailed descriptions of what the workers would do and not do. If there was an item that we questioned or wanted changes, the office staff was open to our suggestions and frequently made the changes we requested. Design and office We took time off from work to meet with the designer at their office/showroom in San Jose. The meeting took about an hour, and in that time, we chose floor tile, cabinets, wall tile, counter tops and paint colors. The designer understood that we wanted quality cabinets and fixtures, but that we didn't want to pay top dollar, and she was able to find suitable options for us. She was familiar with the product manufactures and was responsive whenever we had questions. She also stayed in frequent contact with us throughout the job to make sure that materials were ordered in time for installation. If we had changes to the materials we ordered, she accommodated us. Similar to the designer, the person from the office who managed the details of the contract was friendly, responsive, and did a good job helping to manage the project. The work Everything went pretty much to schedule. The job was estimated to take anywhere from eight to 12 weeks, and they got it mostly done in 9 and only need a few touchups after that. The two main tradesmen were meticulous, knowledgeable, punctual, hard working, respectful, and did a great job cleaning up at the end of each day. I really cannot say enough good things about them. They were comfortable showing me their progress and answering questions. It was clear that they took pride in their work. The main tradesman and the office did a good job setting my expectations for what work would be done when. There were only one or two times where I expected someone to be at the house when they weren't. Each of those times, a quick phone call cleared up the confusion. Overall, the company did a good job driving the work to completion. After demolition, the owner came by to assess the site and see if any additional, unplanned work was needed. I call this the "uh oh" time where the homeowner learns that the job is going to cost significantly more than planned because the demo revealed major problems. Not so... The owner pointed out a few unplanned items that needed to be added to the job, but it was all real stuff and the cost was reasonable. (subfloor had to be leveled, new supporting joists were needed above the ceiling, cold air return to furnace encroached on a cabinet) All the tradespeople who worked on the job were either really good at their job or terrific at it. We especially liked the carpenter who "over-engineered" (quote from the San Jose city inspector) the new wall where we converted a regular door to a pocket door. I had high hopes for this bathroom remodel but it fell short in almost every way. The job experience itself and the finished product are both a huge disappointment. Stop and read the other reviews. You will see AKB has two major weak points: excessive delays and shoddy workmanship. This should be a major wake up call, and instead of arguing with his yelp reviewers, the owner should fix the problem. Other reviewers say the same thing: Michele is the strong point, Johans is the weak point. Somebody should tell him his responses to the bad reviews are only compounding those statements, and he's embarrassing himself. Those replies are the kind of lip service you can expect from Johans if you have complaints or something goes wrong with your job. I have no doubt he'll try to excuse away my review, but all you have to do is look at my photos and ask yourself if this is the kind of quality you want in your home. This job went south in the very beginning when my foreman was pulled off and replaced with another. AKB has some quality people, and some not quality people working for them. Lead designer Michele is a no-nonsense, get things done powerhouse who I believe is the backbone of this company and the only person earns this AKB new business. The owner is a cheap BS artist who will try to feed you crap when the job goes south. Even his workers complain about him. This is the second time I have used AKB, so you can believe that my review is based on thorough experience with this firm. They did our kitchen two years ago, and while there were both hitches and delays in that job, it was completed to satisfaction. However I learned a dislike of the owner's cheapskate antics. The rumors of his retirement also mentioned by other reviewers are coming from inside his own house; and the first thing I asked Michele when I contacted her about this bathroom was if he'd retired yet because I'd found him so unpleasant the first time around. I should have known better, so in a way I have nobody but myself to blame. We hired AKB to renovate a master bathroom into the existing bedroom closet, and extend the hallway linen closet. Frankly, it was outrageous the way we were treated as a repeat customer. A project that was supposed to take 5-6 weeks took 10 weeks simply because workers didn't show up as promised, and so much bad work had to be fixed. Up until the very last day instructions were still not being followed and items were installed wrong. Michele creates a great book of all your appliance and material specs, but the workers ignore it. Most of them are simply hammer and nail guys with no design skills. (Note the drain photo) On the last day American Kitchen and bath were at our home, they installed our barn door rail backward, despite detailed written instructions. Apparently the difference between "left" and "right" is too complicated to discern. I'm quoting the final communication from Johans verbatim here: "First of all my apologies for the delays and setback we had during the remodel of the bathroom, and yes I am as frustrated as you are because we do take great pride in what we do and whatever could go wrong did, for many reasons." Yet the very next line is "We're not sending Ron back out to fix the incorrectly installed barn door, instead we'll credit you for the door we ruined." With all the delays and poor work being done, I would have thought they would try to fix the situation by hustling to get this job done, and done right. Instead, nobody showed up for three days and a driver came out to receive the city inspector. No surprise we failed our inspection because nobody bothered to read the inspector's correction notice from FIVE weeks earlier. So after this job was carried out with the finesse of the Three Stooges, there was never an increased level of "we screwed up again and again, let's get out there and bust ass to get this job done right." American Kitchen & Bath remodeled the kitchen and bathroom in both units of my duplex. The first project was completed in 2015 and the second in 2017. I continue to be satisfied with the results. I can't say that everything went exactly as planned, but few projects ever do. The jobs took a little longer than expected, but the owner, Johans, communicated well when issues arose and worked on getting things back on track quickly. Johans is committed to quality work and excellent service. He wants his customers to be satisfied and follows up to make that happen. After 3+ weeks of back and forth and multiple episodes of hunting her down, I received this email regarding the request of removing the $50 touch-up kit that AKB added (which was free elsewhere) for my $2000+ bathroom vanity: I'm sorry I have not been able to take your calls. I have decided to withdraw my cabinet proposal as I believe that American Kitchen and Bath will not meet your expectations. The most expensive cabinets can arrive with minor flaws that require job site touch-up, and often the installer makes little boo-boos that also need minor touch-up. Sometimes a cabinet arrives damaged from shipping and needs to be replaced completely (under warranty). I have never sold cabinets without touch-up material and never seen a job where it wasn't required. Best of luck with your project. I was looking to get a complete bathroom remodel for my hallway bathroom. I wanted it done right and everyone seems to rave about AKB, so I gave them a call. The woman that answered the phone....VERY condescending. Without even discussing my budget, she actually inserted in the conversation, "I don't know if you can afford us" which really was an eyebrow raiser. (How on earth does she know I can't afford them?) Nevertheless, I asked if I could schedule an estimate to have someone take a look. I believe the appointment was about a month out from my initial call (I was told they have only one estimator on staff at the time) but I was in no hurry. Unfortunately, some unforeseen circumstances arose and I called to cancel the appointment about a week before. I called a couple of weeks later to reschedule and the same condescending woman told me someone would call me back. Gave it a couple of weeks, called again and was told the same thing. NO ONE to this date has ever called me back. If you can't treat potential customers politely and respond back for a simple estimate, how on earth would the actual job go? I've since signed on with another reputable contractor that is proceeding with the project. read more

We used AKB 10 years ago, and they did a fantastic job installing a new shower/bath and new custom-made cabinetry. This year, we wanted a partial remodel for our two bathrooms and they did not disappoint! The job was done in a timely manner, and they were so accommodating when we had to delay the project twice, due to COVID illnesses. They make sure their employees are safe and do not push to send them into dangerous situations to get the jobs completed. Luis was the gentleman who worked primarily on our project. He was polite, funny, and so talented! We trusted him and his team to work without us present, and we love the end result of the bathrooms. Crystal, Lori, and Ron were all fabulous to work with! They were excellent communicators and always answered our questions. We recently used AKB for remodeling two bathrooms. These guys are great! Marcos is a knowledgeable, creative, responsive and attentive design guy who helped us navigate the myriad floor and tile choices to create two wonderful rooms. The construction crew is amazingly talented; I would even call some of them artistes. AKB takes great care to minimize remodeling disruption and left our home nearly cleaner than when they started. As for responsive...shortly after they completed the bathrooms we discovered damage from a couple of roof leaks that required minor drywall repair. Johans was responsive and flexible. He replied to my Saturday email on Sunday and had his drywall guy out Tuesday. The painter followed two days later, everything is done and looking great. Thanks, AKB! read more

I have worked with Joey and her team on one project in particular. I referred them to my Dads house as they needed a company to re-do there Kitchen. Joey Kim was the designer and came up with a plan and design that my parents really liked. Joey's team was very knowledgeable, clean, and respectful to my parents home and left it clean every day they were done. The design included a new island, exhaust system, wall refrigerator, sink, cabinets, and pantry. My parents had AKB redo both of their bathrooms, so when we bought our first house and were ready to remodel they were the top of our list. I've never been involved in a remodel before but am obsessed with HGTV reno shows so I was very excited to get stared on our master bath. I came in with a very specific vision, and Marco, the design guru, not only encouraged my creative freedom for the project, but also gently suggested some alternative ideas for my vision. He even picked out our shower door, which is stunning. In the end, the final product was even better than I had envisioned. What really impressed me with AKB was their customer service. Our foreman, Jeff, was very personable and a delight to have at our home working on the project. He was always so sweet to our baby girl and dogs (even when they tried to escape one day while he was working) and very easy to talk to. It meant a lot to have someone we could trust in and out of our house every day. He even found some silly 80s pictures in the attic the old owner's left behind and brought them down for a laugh. I also appreciate that the owner, Hans, was very accessible. He was easy to reach via phone if need be, and even came by a few times to say "hi" and check on the project. I noticed some of the other reviewers were upset with the timeliness of their projects. Since I had never done any Reno before I was unaware of how lengthy the project could be. But it was all worth it in the end, because AKB didn't stop until the bathroom was completely up to our standards. Overall, hiring AKB is the single worst customer service experience of my life. We hired American Kitchen and Bath (AKB) to renovate a small bathroom in our 1950s modern ranch. AKB took months longer than they said they would, and charged us thousands of dollars more than they had quoted, and to top it all off, their finished work is inconsistent. Overall I am pleased with the look of our new bathroom but very disappointed with AKB. The only experience I've had that's even close to this bad, is years ago during college, I sublet my apartment to a young Harvard student who turned out to be a junkie. When I came back from my semester abroad, for weeks afterward, I was finding used hypodermic needles hidden around the apartment. Imagine my surprise, when I opened my coffee maker and found a used needle inside the filter cone! I can honestly say, based on my personal experience, hiring AKB is actually WORSE than subletting to a junkie. We had to work for MONTHS to earn the money we paid to AKB... and for all intents and purposes, they were LIVING in our house the entire time. At least the junkie was paying me rent. AKB seems like a disorganized company, which does sloppy work, and slowly. We found out the owner is retiring, maybe the company is falling apart. Of the 10 AKB employees we had in our house over the last 6 months, only one of them seemed really good at his job... and he quit halfway through, apologetic and embarrassed for everything we had to put up with (he mentioned it wasn't any better being an employee than a customer). So, if this is how AKB does business, perhaps the company should just go out of business. Both its employees and their customers could do better elsewhere. Hopefully this review will cause AKB to improve their unprofessional performance, and help other families avoid the horrible experience we had with American Kitchen and Bath. read more

We hired AKB to do bathroom remodeling. Michelle is very nice to work with, provides good suggestions, designs well and is very friendly. Their contractors then come in and do a good job, albeit some minor communication issues and mis understanding of designs they will have on the project. But the bigger problem is their owner Johans, who will keep slipping in change orders at you, Nit-picking every additional dollar that he can get out of you. He will admit to his mistakes, but you still have to pay, he will talk well as long as you can write a check, he will listen patiently to your arguments until you agree to pay, if not he will threaten collection agencies. So be wary of these situations. Any remodeling will have unexpected change orders, but make sure to pen it down and approve it. We have used American Kitchen & Bath for 2 major home improvement projects and have been nothing but impressed with their service and the quality of work. In 2016 we used them to do a complete kitchen remodel and we stressed the importance of getting this project done in a timely manner and it was done in 6 weeks. In 2018 we used AKB to refresh the rest of our house (new carpet, doors, floors, baseboard, paint, overhead lighting) and were equally as impressed as we were in 2016. I highly recommend AKB for anyone looking to do a small to a major project. We hired AKB in November 2014 to remodel our kitchen and worked with Michelle to design the new kitchen. She walked us through the materials selection process, and knowing that we had three young children (5 and under), she helped to make sure that we made selections in a timely manner to most efficiently take advantage of the order/delivery schedule. We also received assurances that since our job was "easy" (e.g., no re-wiring, no re-configuring appliance locations, minimal painting, etc.), they could finish the job in five to six weeks. In the end, we put in a contingency in the contract that we would get $1000 back if they failed to meet the schedule, so they were financially motivated to stay on track. Construction started two weeks before Thanksgiving. They taped up a heavy-duty tarp to separate our kitchen and Great Room to minimize dust spreading. There were workers on site nearly every day, though not usually for full days. Our job manager, John, was good about keeping us informed of any problems or schedule changes, which were minimal. I would say, overall, the process went quite smoothly. Their staff, from full-time to sub-contractors, were all very nice and professional. They finished the job on time and on budget (for the most part) and the quality of work was excellent. We did encounter a few problems, however. From the very beginning, we discussed not removing or altering the soffits (the section between the top of the cabinets & the ceiling), as that would add time and expense to our project. We were told they could order crown molding similar in size to our existing ones. However, what was ordered was at least 2-2.5x the size of our old molding. Don't get me wrong, it was beautiful, but immediately, I was concerned that this meant they had to install the cabinets lower than our previous cabinets to accommodate the larger crown molding (thus decreasing the space between the upper cabinets and the countertop (and potentially making it impossible to keep my KitchenAid stand mixer under the cabinets). Thankfully, that was not the case. However, it did contribute to our soffit issue, which the next problem also exacerbated. Michelle suggested a corner cabinet to maximize a corner where we used to have an L-shaped cabinet. This was a great addition as it gave us a lot more storage space, but she forgot to factor in that it would mean having to build out our L-shaped soffit. Additionally, she ordered a larger upper cabinet for one section, which also meant they needed to build out the soffit there to match the cabinet. According to AKB, our soffits would have had to have been built out anyway, because of some building issues, which is not usually something you can figure out until new cabinets have been installed. I'm not sure how much of that is true, given that the previous, thinner molding fit around the soffit just fine. Given that most of the issue was caused by their mis-ordering and mis-calculating, we felt that we shouldn't have to pay for the soffit work. They did build out the soffit (which was 2-3 days of work), but the communication around the cost for it could have been better. We did end up paying for some of it, because we were pleased with the majority of the work. The third problem was our accent tiles. We had ordered 11 sheets of fairly expensive mix-material tiles for the backsplash. Once the tile backsplash had been completed, I did a quick mental calculation and determined that they had used 5 sheets (if they were really judicious with the cutting) and at most 6 sheets. When I mentioned it to AKB, they assured me that all the sheets were used. I let it go for a few days, but it really didn't make sense to me. So, I pulled out my measuring tape and did more concise calculations and sent them a very detailed email. Finally, they admitted that their tile guy threw away the rest of my accent tile sheets because they were damaged by water (it was raining on the day they installed the backsplash). I was really disappointed that 1) their staff was careless enough to leave tile out in the rain to get ruined and 2) I had to really press them to get the truth. I did get the cost of those sheets taken off my bill, thankfully. All in all, I am still very pleased with AKB and would consider working with them again. We had a fully functional kitchen by the end of 5 weeks, and it took another week to complete all the finishing touches. read more

AKB remodeled our kitchen for us in 2013. Working with Michele was a great experience, so much so that when we decided to finish of the rest of the house - master bathroom, living room, and floors in the house, we worked with them again in 2015. It's 2017, and after some wear and tear on the house, we had a couple minor fixes that needed to be made, and Michele and Johans were very accommodating about getting things fixed up properly. We joke that they must know that we'll probably be moving and renovating again before too long, but really, I think they just stand behind their work. A++. read more

We did both a kitchen remodel and a bathroom remodel. Kitchen was completely gutted and we removed existing walls around what was originally a nook for a washer/dryer. In bathroom, new shower, floor, toilet, fixtures and vanity counter top and light fixtures. Basically everything except existing cabinet for vanity. We were very pleased with all the design help and advice we received. Marco and Buffy sat with us and did CAD drawings and we discussed some of the things we wanted and they made suggestions on configuration and materials. Marco even went shopping with us for some items like tile, counter tops and lighting fixtures and gave us names of places to shop for other items. They kept us well informed along the way and even when we hit a glitch when removing the walls in the kitchen. We discovered that one wall was load bearing. They gave us an estimate of the additional cost and an estimate on how much of a delay in the project we could expect. We had a deadline of Thanksgiving for at least a functional kitchen and even with the change order for the load bearing wall, they managed to get us a functioning kitchen on the Tue. before Thanksgiving by having workers here on both the Sat. and Sun. before Thanksgiving. We were pleased enough with the work on the kitchen and the final result that we contracted with AKB to remodel our master bath. We gave them some ideas of the kind of look we wanted and they helped us pick out a tile scheme that met with our vision. It turned out extremely well and we are very pleased with the result. They were always very responsive and kept us informed as to what to expect and when. And they stayed very close to their original time estimates. We recently moved back into our house following a whole-house remodel by Wise Builders, who referred me to Michele C., Lead Designer/Estimator at American Kitchen and Bath to help me in selecting cabinets we needed in our new kitchen and master bath. I liked that the cabinets were made in the USA, and was impressed with the quality. However, I would not have been able to make the myriad of choices needed were it not for Michele's professional services. I arrived pretty overwhelmed by the many decisions and deadlines, with fears of making choices that would not function well for me as everything about the kitchen was changed. Communication with Michele was calming and helpful as she patiently asked questions, answered mine, and offered input without pressure or defensiveness so I was able to compare the options to my needs and wants in order to make decisions. She has a wonderful eye for scale, color, and style, so we were able to narrow down choices of style and finishes on the cabinets after finishing decisions on drawer and shelf options that went into the layout she designed. Using that same design eye, she found countertops in their showroom for the island and perimeter cabinets that matched the picture I carried in my mind and looked great with the cabinet colors/finishes. I'm very pleased with the resulting kitchen and bath, which reflect Michele's design skills applied to my tastes and preferences. read more

I hired American Kitchen and Bath to remodel our dated kitchen. I should start with the good news-- at the end of the day, I think their quality seemed pretty good (certainly not shoddy). I'm not really versed enough in Kitchen Remodels to say whether it was an "A" or "B" job, but it certainly looks pretty good on completion. I'd give them 2 and 1/2 stars if I could give out half stars. The bad news was the process it took to get there. I hired them to do our kitchen remodel starting a scant two weeks after our fourth child was born (my wife was on maternity leave and as difficult as it was to do a kitchen remodel with a new baby it would even be more difficult once she got back to work.) I bid it out to four different companies, and while AKB was the most expensive bid (though all were fairly similar), I decided to use them. With four young children in the house, I was very concerned about the time it would take to do the job. Our lives were chaotic enough without adding in a long remodel. The clincher for me in going in with AKB was their owner coming in for the final bid in which he pronounced would take two weeks (complete with a schedule) and that "he couldn't see any reason" it would go beyond 2 and 1/2 weeks. I indicated to them the extreme importance of sticking to the schedule and they agreed to put in a provision in the contract saying workmen (plural) would be at the site every day from 8:00-4:00. The kitchen project ended up taking five weeks (despite the fact that we had zero change orders and no complications that were discovered midway through the job.) These were five really uncomfortable weeks where we had no access to our kitchen and in many cases had to go outside the house to go from one half of our house to the other, since the only route is through the kitchen. There was frequently only one worker on the job (not the "workmen" mentioned in the contract) and while they sometimes put in a full day, sometimes they only put in 1/2 or 2/3 of a day. I was immediately on the case as soon as I saw the schedule slipping, at which point I was given a detailed fake schedule that AKB had to know was in no way based in reality. I get that remodeling projects frequently run late, but I had made a huge point of the schedule up front, and the project ended up taking 2 and 1/2 times the length of time promised. I was offered a variety of excuses but the bottom line is that I am confident that they accepted this job knowing there was no way they could complete it in the promised timeframe. I made clear to them throughout the job that their delays were a huge hardship to my family and asked that they needed to make this up somehow (a discount on the job would have seemed the most natural way--I run a small hospitality business and on the rare occasions when I fundamentally let down a customer, I make it up to them financially in a significant way.) AKB seemed uninterested in giving me any kind of discount, to which I can only conclude that they thought their level of service was acceptable--which it most certainly wasn't. I wasn't going to press the issue, because for me it was more about the recognition that they had been less than forthright and seriously inconvenienced a customer than it was about the money. In any case, there are certainly others who have had a good experience with this provider, but I was very frustrated and disappointed with mine. I didn't feel they were honest with me, and they finished the job inexcusably behind schedule, causing my family a good deal of hardship at a time at which we really didn't need our lives being complicated. read more

We hired American Kitchen and Bath to remodel our entire house. We had been wanting to remodel for years but were hesitant because of all the horror stories we heard about remodels. AKB made us very comfortable and were very professional from the beginning to the end. We had no idea what to expect but Shawn explained the entire process before we started. We worked with the designer Michelle T. who was extremely helpful. She listened to what we wanted and gave us great ideas all the way through the project. Our lead foreman on the job was Robert who was very knowledgeable and did an excellent job. AKB did most of the work and had subcontractors for the jobs they didn't do. The planning took 3 months and the work took 4 months which we were very happy about since we lived in the house while the work went on. We highly recommended AKB for any remodel job. read more

We hired AKB to remodel a kitchen and two bathrooms. We have kept notes of our time together and hopefully we can provide some feedback We sought bids from 6 contractors and AKB was mid range. We went with AKB b/c of the comprehensive nature of the estimate and specifically Michele. As others have commented, she is the rock of the place. Meticulous and quick to respond, even to early morning emails. She has obviously a lot of experience, and dedication to her craft and job. The consummate professional. Here's a breakdown: POSITIVE - Professional and polite. All who came to work always introduced themselves and seemed to enjoy their work and interacted well together. - As mentioned, the estimate was comprehensive - The team was always responsive to emails and texts, including with any changes. notable exception: our repeated inquiries about delays. - AKB did try their best to rectify problems that arose (see below), as nothing goes as planned when remodeling! - Care of our home. For the most part everyone kept it neat and tidy. Some exceptions below NEGATIVES - The most negative: delays. We were told the project would take 4-6 weeks, and this is in the contract. We knew to expect delays to this estimate. However, the project ended up taking 4 months. We even left for vacation for 3 weeks and had hoped the majority of the project would be done then. but very little had been completed during that time. One lesson for those seeking to remodel-- have a contract with incentives or delay clauses. We had many days where no one showed up, or various other delays. These delays to our project had nothing to do with us changing plans, as we had emailed AKB our final plans 2 weeks after signing the contract. - Note that AKB does upcharge 10% on materials. All the other contractors we discussed had told us we would get materials at the contractor price without an upcharge (i.e. wholesale) so we assumed the same with AKB. However AKB charges 10% above the retail (non-contractor) price. - One concern we had about this is that AKB may order too much supply and we are left with overpaying for the extra material. This did happen with the marble ordered, which was possibly 25-30% more than was needed. Fortunately we were able to return the excess in this instance (but not in others). We recommend others who spend time like we did in visiting all the stores ourselves and selecting materials to order them yourself to avoid the 10%; often the stores will give contractor pricing also. Or negotiate with AKB on this as part of the estimate. - Errors were made in calculating the necessary material needed for the kitchen countertops. This required return and re-order, causing more delays. AKB reimbursed us some for this, but we would rather have avoided delays. - We would often get urgent emails or texts from the project manager saying we needed to make decisions that same day, so often my wife and I had to interrupt work, often to come home, so as to make decisions that we felt could have been asked of us earlier. - Quality of work. Probably 2.5/5. Some were excellent, as the countertop installation went very well. Others were mediocre-- the electricians being the worst. They overcharged for their labor and often did poorly. They shorted the electrical to our upstairs chandelier and then tried to charge us later to fix it; they removed an old light chandelier that we wanted to replace and ended up throwing it away (we had wanted it kept). they left one day without turning on the breakers so the fridge was out. Other notable issues that arose: someone managed to affect our sprinkler system twice so a patch of our lawn died. A large amount of paint or saw dust were thrown into our lawn (and never cleaned up). - the bath marble installer damaged one of the tiles during installation, and didn't properly assess the tile consistency so had to fix the latter (though the broken tile was never fixed and we can still see it to this day). - The team forgot to arrange for a final inspection with the city and we almost didn't get permit accreditation. We only did b/c the city notified us of the error - Accounting. At times received duplicate invoices and in one instance they missed that we had sent a $4000 check, and in another we were overcharged $150. - we advise to negotiate all remodeling costs upfront. After signing the contract we asked cost to replace hinges on 20 doors and was quoted $4000. We ended up doing it all ourselves and it took 1 day and $200. In retrospect we think the following from AKB would have improved the overall experience: - fewer delays - a timeline of the project, with detailed plans for what to be done on which day. This was provided to us, but not til 2.5 months into the project - a bi-weekly update on progress and issues - better fit and finish (and electrical contractors!) - cutting out the 10% upcharge and materials at wholesale like other contractors read more

American Kitchen & Bath completely remodeled two of our bathrooms, one in 2005 and the other in 2014. We continue to be extremely satisfied with the results. Although I can't deny that there were a few mishaps along the way, and the jobs took longer than we expected, what makes this company special is the owner, Johans, and the quality of the people that work for him. Johans is committed to high quality and excellent service. He wants his customers to be completely satisfied and goes out of his way to make sure that they are. He cares about his workers, and they in turn are very loyal to him. After listening to several of our friends describe their unfortunate experiences with unscrupulous contractors who did shoddy work and then disappeared, I'm very happy that we had the good fortune to meet Johans and that we put our trust in him. read more

Drove my mother to this location to inquire about the kitchen she is currently remodeling. A few seconds later she walked out apparently she walked in asking for a show room she wanted to see examples of what they had to offer. She then told me that once she asked about the show room some angry lady proceeded to rudely yell at her regarding the show room. My mother seemed pretty upset but jokes on them. We went with a much friendly and professional company whose currently redoing her whole kitchen. Rude people don't do well in sells hopefully management takes notes. read more

I had an emergency on Friday afternoon- our shower door hinge had broken. I called him up and right away he said he would take care of it. An Update on AKB's service. We recently had our attic inspected. The inspector told me that our exhaust fan was not vented. I immediately contacted AKB and explained that despite the fact that we are past the warranty period, I expected them to correct this. They were very responsive. Work was scheduled within 3 days of my first email and completed to our satisfaction. We are still very pleased with AKB and would not hesitate to call them again if we do any other projects. read more

AKB is a great company to deal with. Michele Crawford, the designer is wonderful and worked with my wife on the project. Two complete bathroom redos, master closet, hallway cabinets, master bedroom, etc. AKB has specialists for each element of the project-electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, demo, etc. Mike Pera and Michele are real pros! The work started as scheduled and went a little over which is expected. As in any remodel it is up to the homeowner to stay involved and get to know the workers. That is what I did and had a fun time, especially on Fridays when I brought in donuts, a little thing that was much appreciated. I wouldn't hesitate using AKB again. read more

We contracted with AKB to do a complete makeover of the two dated bathrooms in our condominium unit based on online reviews . We were fortunate to work with Michele Crawford, who was wonderful. She was professional, punctual, and on top of things throughout the process. Plus her design ideas and recommendations were outstanding and it was a joy to work with her. Our project was on time and the quality of the work seems excellent. This was our first remodeling experience so we were learning as we went along, which is also why we appreciated the design input from Michele. We have some built in cabinets that required custom doors made to match the new vanities but Michele helped us through this without a hitch. Their price was in the upper half of our other bids it was still in the mid-range. We also remodeled our kitchen at the same time using another contractor we met through Home Depot. This job was of a similar magnitude but it was much more disjointed. It started before the bathroom work, and it is still not done. It is also having issues passing inspection which was not an issue for AKB. We should have gone with AKB for all the work! We would definitely consider hiring them again. There are always unexpected things that pop up in any remodeling job so you have to expect this to a certain extent. But in our case it minimal and overall it was a very positive experience. The quality timeliness of the workmanship was excellent but we honestly felt that Michele's personal touch is what made it truly positive experience. Our combined job costed about $45,000, which was not cheap but in line with and less than some of the other bids we had done. read more

We located AKB by looking for the highest rated company with great reviews. We were not disappointed at all and are very glad to have found them. We had them remodel a kitchen and two bathrooms for us. They have a really good designer, Michele, who worked with us to first understand our styles and tastes. She then created a design and helped us select tiles to use for the floor, backsplash, and bathroom walls. Michele showed us lots of granite and tiles that worked together to make a beautiful kitchen and bathrooms. We picked high quality cabinets that are the highest that we have seen and we are very happy with the ones we selected. The people doing the work are craftsmen who really care about their work. There were specialists for certain areas, like laying tile, and also generalists who worked in many areas. We were very happy with them all and found them to be hard workers. They always arrived promptly each morning to work that day and at the end of the day would clean inside and out before leaving. This major remodel ran smoothly and we would select AKB again for any other job we may have. read more

We hired American Kitchen & Bath a few years ago to remodel our guest bathroom. We were so pleased with the results we decided to use them again to design and install a new kitchen. Michele listened to our ideas and created a new design that is much more efficient using the existing space. She also guided us through the decision making process to select the best materials within our budget to create a beautiful kitchen of which we are proud. All of the crew working on the project were professional and courteous. They were receptive to any minor concerns we had and worked to satisfy. Any issues that arose, such as discovery of a scratched back splash tile, were promptly addressed once we notified Johans. The tile was replaced the next day. The work was completed within the time estimated. The project required replacing the old kitchen top to bottom and installing a new out door electrical circuit breaker panel to upgrade power delivery by PG&E. We hired AKB for a partial kitchen remodel consisting of some demolition, framing, flooring, appliances, and new cabinetry/granite to match existing. The project cost roughly $20k, and in the end, 25% of the work is excellent, 50% is satisfactory, and 25% is unacceptable. After the project took more than double the promised amount of time, my husband and I decided to just be done with it. The main issue these guys have is communication. Before the work started, we had a long meeting with the designer, project manager, cabinet maker, and owner to pin down exactly what we wanted done, how the cabinets should look, etc. Despite this, morning after morning their workers showed up, unclear on what to do. My husband spent at least a half hour almost daily to update their guys on the project and they still made mistakes: some small and easily fixed, some not so much. My biggest disappointment is the drawer fronts on our new cabinet. The cabinet maker I originally spoke to subcontracted to his buddy and failed to communicate one important detail: no drawer pulls. When they installed the new cabinet, the work was lovely, but did not match what we had and what I had requested. We waited over 2 additional weeks for the replacement drawer fronts, and when they finally arrived, they were a different design which the owner claimed is "standard." That might be the case in somebody else's kitchen, but they still don't match mine. In addition to communication, it is clear that they are accepting more business than they can manage. This is one of the reasons that the project took so much longer than promised - there were many days where no one showed up to do any work, or their guys only worked half days. I got the impression both the communication and work-load issues are known problems and the owner (Johans) is working to resolve them, but the efforts came too late for our project. I would not work with these guys again. read more

He provided an accurate estimate and let us know whenever our choices would cause a variance in the budget so that there were no surprises as the end. It was so painful even getting any contractors to respond to our inquiry for a bid, but Johans was responsive from day one and the level of service did not change after the contract was signed.
