Lunch special three cut rolls - rice was dry and hard to chew. You can see from the photo how dry it is. While the price was good and the portion seemed great, you can't be serving dried out rice.

Came here for the $105 luxury omakase and honestly, it's worth considering for the amount of food you get. We had 21 courses, which was a lot. I was completely stuffed by the end. The progression had a nice mix of appetizers, hot dishes, and nigiri, and the overall fish quality was solid. Everything tasted fresh for the most part, though the uni leaned a bit bitter compared to the rest. I was especially excited about the chawanmushi (one of my favorites), and while it was included, the portion felt a little small. I definitely would've loved more of that. One feature I really enjoyed was the encore round at the end, where you can order an extra piece of your favorite. Some selections have a small $5 upcharge. Such a fun touch. Dessert was matcha ice cream, but the matcha flavor didn't really come through for me. The ambiance was nice and clean, making for a comfortable dining experience overall. Definitely a filling and satisfying omakase option.

Came here for dinner because I wanted to try the treasure box! The restaurant is very nicely decorated, and the main seating area is around the sushi bar. The treasure box is similar to a chirashi bowl, but with all of the ingredients cut into cubes. Overall, I enjoyed the dish, but I have to say that a lot of the cubed pieces were avocado. The uni shooters we ordered were also pretty good. It is not the best uni, but you get what you pay for with 2 shooters for just $18. The service here was excellent, the staff are very attentive and friendly.

My friend chose this place and it was a good choice. Some sushi pieces were a bit on the fishy side for us, but overall, my experience and the food were wonderful. The service was great. The staff was respectful and polite. The place was cozy and clean and not too busy. We both got the Luxury Omakase. It came with 21 courses. We weren't planning on eating that much food, but when the waiter told us about it, YOLO. Our bill for two people was $272.52. It included the Luxury Omakase x 2, two Cokes, and a 20% tip.

My friend and I frequent Akafuji for their omakase, and their quality remains unmatched. Reservations for dining at their sushi bar are a must! You can probably grab them the same day if you have just a party of two, but will obviously want to call ahead if you're coming with a big group. We usually order their starting tier for omakase and it's just the right amount of food. My favorites in the past have been their ootoro nigiri, blackened miso cod nigiri, A5 wagyu nigiri, and ootoro rice bowl. In the past, I've ordered their soft shell crab appetizer, but found it on the oilier side, and thus didn't enjoy it as much. At the end of the omakase, they also offer an "encore" where you get to choose the course you liked the most and receive it free of charge. This is the only restaurant I've ever seen that does something so generous, so big ups to them on their hospitality! The staff are very friendly and parking is generally available right in front of the restaurant, despite the lot being shared with multiple other restaurants. It's a quiet and quaint spot, which is an introvert's dream. I will say that the sushi chefs don't interact with you much compared to other omakase experiences I've had, so that's something to keep in mind if you're looking for that kind of meal. All in all, I will be returning and sharing this spot with all of my friends and family for years to come!

came here last night to celebrate my bf's birthday and we both loved it!!! We got the omakase luxury ($105 pp for 21 courses). The quality of the fish was great and fresh. My only critique would be that some of the dishes were brought out too fast and food began piling up at our table. The nigiri came out at a good pace but some of the other items kept coming out too fast. I am not sure if the dishes are supposed to come out in any particular order, but it was just kind of a weird pacing. We didn't really get to fully enjoy each item since new items kept being brought out and it felt a bit rushed. Besides that, we had a great experience and enjoyed every dish. I'm still giving this spot a 5/5 regardless because we were so happy with the meal. At the end, they ask you for your encore piece which you can get another complimentary piece (some pieces would have an up charge like toro/amaebi). We got another piece of scallop free of charge. This place is a hidden gem and so worth every penny! We were stuffed by the end. I will definitely be back, it's a great place for a nice treat or for any special occasion!

We made a reservation for their Valentines Day Omakase Special and was seated promptly! The atmosphere was quiet and welcoming, and the server was very attentive in clearing our tables or refilling sides/waters. I wasn't sure what to expect for my first omakase but this was a delightful meal! Every bite was well thought out and expertly made on the spot by the chefs. Whether it was the perfect smoky sear or buttery texture, each course was delicious and paired amazingly. There was a hiccup in our orders for the encore dishes (the wrong courses were ordered) but John came by to sort it out and we were pleasantly surprised by how accommodating they were!

Hidden gem and super affordable omakase. Lunch omakase was just only 60 and had a lot of different courses. The fish was fresh and great and we both loved the Japanese Uni. The service was great and we loved the restaurant. Great place to date and enjoy the omakase together.

    Victoria G.

Akafuji was delicious, and the sushi tasted incredibly fresh. I ordered a few hand rolls, some bluefin sushi, and a couple of rolls, and everything was well prepared and full of flavor. The quality of the fish really stood out, and you can definitely tell they use fresh ingredients. Overall, it was a great dining experience, and I'll definitely be coming back.

Wow. Found a new hidden gem! Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Ambiance 5/5 Store is clean, restroom clean and smell good, food and service is top notch. Price and value 5/5 I did the $105.00 omakase "luxury omakase" worth every dollar honestly. 16 courses; 20+ plates and bowls. I was in food heaven. Here is what I got today: Miso soup Salad Cucumber salad Yellowtail belly sashimi Oyster with caviar and abalone with intestine paste Monk fish liver *All courses are great and no dip required! None of the fishes taste too cold to the touch, smooth and full of natural flavors. Tuna sushi Japanese steamed egg (mushroom, mild to taste) Black cod sushi (fatty, buttery, torchy, melts in mouth ;best piece) Sea bream sushi A5 wagyu sushi (torched, fatty, full flavors) Dungeoness crab and bay crab Halibut sushi (bouncy, soft, velvet texture) Kanpachi sushi (Japanese amberjack; but more crunchy than the halibut; mild, clean flavors) Scallop sushi (unlike cooked scallop, flavor is mild and Gentle) Otoro sushi (super creamy and melts in the mouth feel and full of flavors of tuna; one of the best pieces) Uni half hand roll (super full creamy buttery flavor topped on rice and it is a perfect bite) Mixed tempura (kabocha squash, shosito pepper, shrimp, hand crafted, freshly fried; so good!) Blue crab hand roll (full of flavor; deep rich handrolp to end your meal) Encore sushi (pick of your choice!) I got Uni Fish soup! Rich in fish flavors, chopped green onion pieces gives it fresh and crunch, very hot! Must wait a few mins before drinking. Seasoned just RIGHT, it's a hit even though it's soup. Cheese cake dessert Tamago dessert Thank you John for all of your service, answers and food recommendations, I felt like I dined at a Michelin grade restaurant today! You all are amazing! This is not just "another" basic sushi restaurant. Come try!!

    Jiahui G.

I usually leave omakase feeling hungry, but this 21 course experience was surprisingly filling. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared, from the fresh sashimi and generous uni hand roll to the perfectly seasoned nigiri. The black cod was tender and flavorful, and the oyster was incredibly fresh. The progression of courses was balanced and satisfying. We walked in expecting a light meal and left completely stuffed. Definitely worth trying.

    Katie T.

WOW what an amazing omakase experience. The outside of the restaurant looks unassuming and the plaza it is located in is a little eerie especially late at night but don't let that fool you. We opted for the omakase luxury menu- the quality of fish you get for the price is a steal! Each piece is thoughtfully prepared, seasoned perfectly and the chef goes at your pace (I'm a really slow eater compared to my partner and the rate at which my courses came out was adjusted accordingly). Service was great and the ambiance in the restaurant is a little bit small and cozy but there is still enough room between each party for an intimate experience. I also love the lighting which was perfect for taking photos of your omakase experience. I would happily go out of my way to dine here again.

How much for the 21 pcs omakase? 15 pcs is $105

    $105 per person

Hi, could you please let me know if reservations are accepted for the omakase bar seating, or is it strictly walk-in only?

    Yes they take reservations!

Can I order a take out?

    Hi yes you can !

If I want to do omakase do I have to make reservations?

No you do not need a reservation for omakase.

This place is marked as having outdoor seating. Is it still available?

Yes, there is a small space outside that is covered, although more seating is in inside I believe. I honestly prefer sitting at the island counter and getting sushi directly from the chef. 😊

If one or more party members has an allergy do we let them know in the reservation or when seated?

You can let the restaurant know, but usually sushi will say you're on your own when you take raw fishes because it has bacteria

Do they still have their HH menu?

    No Happy Hours here

For the omakase, does the nigiri get served one at a time?

    Yes

    Do they have AYCE?

    No, they don't.

What time are you open? And menu?

We're open Tuesday-Sunday 5pm-9pm and Friday-Sunday 11:30am-2pm. You can check out our menu through the Yelp pictures or on our website, https://akafujirestaurant.com/

5/5, vegan review included:…read more Vegans & vegetarians this one is for you!! I was shocked to discover Hanamaru served both meat eaters and the plant based crew, and could not believe my eyes when I saw they had a vegan menu on Yelp, but call me astounded when I realized that it was several PAGES long. It reminded me a little of Huntington Ramen in Fullerton, and the similarities make sense since they are sister restaurants, as noted by previous Yelpers. We visited on a Saturday night to celebrate some birthdays, and realized that they had a pretty full crowd. We waited a little to be seated, but afterwards, service was both kind and attentive. I struggled to make up my mind on what to order, because everything on the vegan menu had pictures and looked absolutely phenomenal. I wound up just asking for a recommendation for the most popular roll, and landed on the vegan volcano roll, while my friend ordered the non-vegan volcano roll. We also ordered several small plates: baked mussels for my friend, and vegan inari bomb and vegan tofu karaage for us to share. While we waited, the server brought out two crispy rice--one vegan and one not vegan for us on the house. They were simply delicious, and I will need to order that the next time I'm dining here. Everything we ordered came quickly, and tasted as good as the pictures. My friend tried one of my vegan rolls, and she said it was just as good as her non vegan rolls. They're super flavorful but manage to taste very clean and light, perhaps from the cucumbers. She might just order from the vegan menu next time too! Of the small plates, I liked the tofu karaage more, but only because the flavors on the inari bomb resembled that of the rolls I ordered. I've been to many vegan sushi places over the years, and this is one of my favorite spots, despite it being catered to both meat eaters and vegans alike. After we finished, they also served us one vegan and nonvegan ice cream on the house. While we didn't tell them we were celebrating birthdays, their extremely kind service made us feel exceptionally well taken care of. It was ~$70 after tip and I tipped higher for the great service we received, so pre-tip prices are not unreasonable. This will definitely be my go to spot for whenever I'm craving vegan sushi.

First Visit (Thursday - Essentials AYCE): We came with friends and tried a wide range of appetizers, ramen (good), and sushi, including all the limited premium selections. The shrimp tempura and dipping was very bland, and the soft-shell crab lacked crunch, but the salmon & yellowtail collars were excellent. Fish was fresh. All items were generously portioned and their generous cuts of fish was impressive. We also liked the grab-and-go drinks and desserts (though no Coke Zero). The restaurant filled up quickly after 6pm, so arriving early helped. Service by Sue was friendly and attentive. Second Visit (Friday - Signature AYCE): The Signature upgrade includes an omakase starter, unlimited bluefin tuna, plus everything on the Essentials menu. The unlimited bluefin tuna was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and worth the $15 upgrade. We mainly focused on sushi this time - blue fin, yellow tail, limited premium (scallops were amazing) items, avocado cut rolls, and carpaccios. The shrimp tempura was bland again (strike two) but the shishito peppers were a nice surprise. Finishing with Coke Zero (yay!) and ice cream was perfect. Chelsea, our waitress, was very attentive and engaging. Overall: Fresh fish, generous cuts and portions, and the Signature AYCE upgrade make this spot a gem. They also offer fresh-frozen wasabi which is a plus for me. Not everything hits the mark (tempura!), but the variety, attentive service, and value keep us coming back. Glad to have found a local Japanese restaurant with AYCE options nearby.

It feels much larger than it appears, and the layout is really well done. I also liked how the restaurant manages to feel open while still giving each table a sense of privacy. Even with other diners around, it never felt crowded or too exposed, which made the whole experience more comfortable. The lighting is on the dimmer side, and I actually appreciated that. It creates a relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy your meal and conversation without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. The staff is also easy to get ahold of whenever you need something, which made the service feel attentive without being intrusive. As for the food, this is where Arigatto really stands out. A lot of AYCE sushi places focus more on quantity and consistency across the menu, but here it feels like the chefs genuinely care about the details. The presentation, the balance of flavors, and the way each item is prepared all show a level of attention that you don't always find at an "all you can eat" spot. If you come during peak hours, you may wait a little longer for some dishes to arrive, but honestly, it never bothered me. Once the food hits the table, the quality and care that went into it make the wait feel completely worth it. For an AYCE sushi restaurant, Arigatto delivers an experience that feels a little more thoughtful and elevated than most, and that's what keeps this place very impressive.

I was considering ordering a larger portion, but they actually talked me out of it because they knew I wouldn't finish it. They were right. That small gesture showed me they cared more about giving me a great experience than squeezing a few extra dollars out of my wallet. That kind of customer service is rare these days. What makes this experience even more memorable is that I had just come from X Fish Izakaya, where I spent nearly an hour waiting to be seated while watching people who arrived after me get seated first. I left feeling frustrated and completely overlooked. Walking into Chubby Sushi was the exact opposite experience. Here, I felt welcomed, appreciated, and genuinely taken care of from the moment I walked through the door. As if the food and service weren't enough, on my way out I met a well-known food reviewer and even got the chance to hold a giant tuna head that Chubby Sushi had on display for a photo. It was one of those unexpected moments that made an already great night unforgettable. Sometimes a bad experience leads you exactly where you're supposed to be. I'm genuinely glad X Fish Izakaya dropped the ball because it led me to discover Chubby Sushi. This wasn't just a great meal--it was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time and one I'll remember for years to come. I'll definitely be back. Chubby Sushi didn't just earn my business--they earned a customer for life.

Ordered takeout from here and had an overall good experience. The rolls are a good size/portion and…read morefilled me up quickly. The spicy tuna crispy rice is good but I think it would be better fresh at the establishment because it got a little soggy, which can be expected when ordering takeout. I had a cali roll with salmon on top. The fish was amazing, very fresh and the lemon on top really set everything over the edge. The spicy tuna crispy rice was good, a little soggy but I believe that is due to it being a takeout order. It did taste a little too oily for my liking though. As for the pricing... This place is a little more expensive than what I usually am willing to spend for good sushi. The takeout packaging is very nice, not your typical cheap to go containers. I enjoyed this food and would definitely try it again (maybe at the actual establishment next time) but would recommend if you are in the area!

Made reservations to take my husband to dinner for Father's Day since we've not been to Azabu's in…read moreyears now that we live in Long Beach. This had to be a special occasion to make the drive. Aaaand yes! It was still worth the drive. Still looked the way i remembered. Service was great as well. Christine was our waitress. She was attentive and sweet. Despite that my lobster tail took a while to come out ( and if it wasn't for Christine being so helpful and nice I'm sure this would be a totally different review) Everything was so delicious. Started off with the spicy edamame which I could literally drink the sauce they make them in. We also had the crab hand rolls. Those were so warm and tasty! Followed by the yummy rolls. Queen roll with the strawberry on top was my fav! Azabu crunchy roll had a perfect crunch and gives you a mouthful of deliciousness (2nd fav) Then the rock n roll rocked our world! That was a party in my mouth with all the flavors. (3rd fav) We got the keto roll and the only reason it was my least favorite is because we felt the cucumber overpowered the sushi and mango. Both me and my husband ate just what was in the inside of the cucumber it was way better. We didn't eat the cucumber. When the lobster finally came luckily it was worth the wait!!! I highly recommend the lobster tail! Full of flavor! The butter my flavoring was mouth watering. Truly enjoyed every bite! Last but not least our dessert. I ordered the chocolate cake roll! Wow!!! It truly hit the spot. Christine also brought a berry ice cream for the long wait of my lobster tail. It was so good! I thought I was full but it was so good I kept on eating it. This was a great way to celebrate my husband for Father's Day. Thank you Azabu's and Christine!

My husband and I visited Azabu for our anniversary date and had a very enjoyable experience…read more We started with the Tuna Roll, which was fresh, flavorful, and a great way to begin our meal. We then shared the Seafood Ceviche, which featured fresh fish, mango salsa, avocado, micro cilantro, leche de tigre, and macha sauce. It was definitely on the spicy side, so if you're sensitive to heat, I would recommend asking for the macha sauce to be removed or served on the side. The flavors were fresh, vibrant, and well balanced, with the avocado adding a nice creamy contrast to the spice. The presentation of the ceviche was especially well done and made the dish even more enjoyable. I paired my meal with a glass of Strev Moscato, while my husband enjoyed a 22 oz bottle of Asahi. The atmosphere was welcoming and made for a nice anniversary dinner. The presentation of the dishes was beautiful, and the overall vibe was perfect for a date night. After our visit, we noticed what appeared to be a billing error on our check. We called the restaurant, and the manager was very helpful and quickly resolved the issue by issuing a refund. Mistakes can happen anywhere, but I truly appreciated how professionally and promptly they handled the situation. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, appreciated the excellent customer service, and would happily return.
