This is a great casual spot with lots of options for Japanese food. My go-to is the Dream Come True, which packs in lots of fresh fish in a massive roll for a reasonable price. We also enjoyed the crispy, non-oily mixed/combo tempura appetizer. The tempura is predominately vegetable with 2 pieces of shrimp, so we'd recommend the other tempura options if you're looking for more meat. The curry pork katsu was nothing special and could've benefitted from a stronger curry flavor. The portion of katsu could've been increased to match the overwhelming amount of rice and curry. Service is fast, friendly, and attentive. There are 2 TV screens for additional entertainment. Overall, a solid place for couples and families alike. read more

Overall, akebono is a solid choice. We had the sushi boat B and it was good. Presentation 9/10. Sushi rolls 8/10. Each roll did have a ton of rice so that is why I rated it lower. Next time I would order rolls separately. My favorite is the dream come true. read more

Since I already reviewed this place I'll make it quick Katsu curry: it was a gigantic plate. The picture doesnt do it justice. You might think its little food but its just compared to the plate its looks little. It still beat me up, I couldnt finish it. They gave you spoon, and chopsticks was already there before. Katsu was crispy, nice crunch to it. It was long and thin. Me likey. Curry was curry. Rice was japanese rice. The normal stuff I like. The carrot just a little interesting difference, so they were huge, like the potatoes and they only gave you 2 of each. Carrots were cooked to like the between of raw and cooked. Has mostly the texture of cooked carrot but also a subtle texture and taste of what a raw carrot would taste like. I thought it was unique and not bad at all. Its rare to see this kinda texture. I didnt try the potato, i planned to eat it last and I couldnt finish the dish. Enjoyed the Agedashi Tofu Don the first time I came here and had to try again when I was in the area. Still so good and will always be my favorite from this place. This time also tried the tako sunomono and the spicy tuna and unagi temaki (hand rolls). Enjoyed everything and will definitely come back for the sashimi which I wanted to try, but passed on it this time around. Would like to also try the rolls. There is a nice open dining area when you enter and there are more tables in the back. Busy when visited, but service was fast and great. They keep checking on you and make sure your water is filled. I come to this restaurant every time I come to Sacramento. WTF? Hispanic women behind sushi bar working. Can't speak English and absolutely no idea how to make traditional sushi!! This has been my go-to mom and pop Japanese restaurant. Lately, their sushi has dropped in quality and increasing in price. However, I suppose this is a sign of the times. My favorites are their kitchen entrees and appetizers. They serve big portions that you'll have trouble finishing. Their bento boxes, lunch or dinner, really shine. Now, the fish is DRY, discolored, drenched in sauce to mask it all. The establishment is filthy, and sewage smell is pungent through the hall way. Okay, this is what you call a hidden gem. It's not the flashiest sushi spot, but it's been a long time favorite by many. I don't know why I took so long to eat at this place. I loved everything I ate here. The miso soup was flavorful. The Gyudon was cooked really well. The tempura was cooked to perfection. I also really enjoyed the sushi roll. I've been coming to Akebono since I moved to Sacramento 15 years ago and what I love about coming here is I know what I will get. I know I will be provided with friendly service and good food. Their menu is extensive and their rolls are unique. We came here the other night and ordered the challenge ramen, bento combo with chicken katsu and spicy chicken, and the fire salmon roll. My fiancé had wished the ramen was more spicy for him but his spice level is on a different universe. So I'm guessing it's probably spicy enough for the average person--at least I thought it was. The katsu is my comfort zone and I've always loved it. While the salmon roll was also a hit. We had the nicest server who took care of us well, even on this busy night. It might not be the most romantic spot, but Akebono gets the job done to get you fed. read more

Terrible Service Again!!! We will NEVER go back. We've been going to this restaurant for years, and the service has steadily declined over the past few years. Unfortunately, our Christmas Eve dinner was the final straw. Our family of 11 had the worst service we have ever experienced. The pacing was beyond unacceptable -- my husband finished his entire meal before my brother was even served. We repeatedly asked where the rest of the food was, and every time we were brushed off with a lazy "we'll check on it." No follow-up, no urgency, no apology. The staff clearly couldn't care less. What made it even worse was the attitude. It felt like from the very beginning they knew they didn't have to try. At the end of the meal, we requested that the service fee be discounted at the very least, since we essentially received no service at all. Despite acknowledging the issues, they still charged us the full service fee. It took some back forth with the manager for him to agree to give a 10% discount. No accountability. No professionalism. No respect for long-time customers. After years of loyalty, we will NEVER go back. Save your time, money and sanity, and go elsewhere. read more

Sashimi to nigiri ooishi desu! It was refreshing to find a sushi place that specializes in more than rolls. Ordered the salmon sashimi lunch which had slices that were generously thick and nicely plated (forgot to take pic though). My mom ordered the salmon nigiri which was also great (though their sushi rice was tad sweet for my taste but still good. I live in folsom and would seriously consider driving here (it was that good). Bottom line: if you're looking for rolls go elsewhere but if you want proper sushi, this place is a strong recommend. read more

We went on the monday of memorial weekend for lunch and parking was available. It had a decent amount of people but we went with a pretty big group so we got seated right away at the back area which didnt have anyone there. The wait time for the food was pretty average, not too long or fast. I ordered the tan tan mien and was disappointed because it only came with jus noodles and ground pork. Like there weren't any other toppings like other ramen places provide but oh well. The flavor wasn't bad but not super flavorful also not that spicy. I also tried the california tolls which is made with real crab and it kinda was all just mushy to me so i wasnt a fan. The teriyaki beef rice bowl was also like 90% rice, the later of meat you see is all you get lol. But the food was all just pretty mid from what people in my group ordered. Overall place is mid, service was normal food was mid and prices were average i guess? But seemed like portions were getting smaller from other times people in my group have been but im not completely sure. Akebono is a favorite of my family's, and a frequent place for us to visit all together. They're a great place for authentic Japanese food. Portions are very big, and you're sure to have leftovers at the end of your meal. They have tons of options but I usually get a combination plate as I love to mix and match the different entree options. The staff is also very accommodating for substitutions, especially with the tempura if you only like certain ones. I highly recommend akebono! read more

This place is a lot larger inside than it looks from the outside. Good place to have a small gathering or private party. The chefs spoke Japanese; that is always a good sign of authenticity. Came here at 11:30am on a Saturday afternoon, right when they opened. It was empty when we walked in but, it got busy pretty quick. They have two dining areas, one in the front and one in the back where you can have a small private party. Be careful which door you walk in, as it is in very close proximity to the restaurant next door and you can easily walk into the wrong restaurant if you are not paying attention. We were a party of four so we ordered quite a bit. Deluxe sashimi combo, Shoyu Ramen, Spicy Miso Ramen, Yakisoba, Salmon blossom, and Uni, The salmon blossom is basically like the pepper fin but with salmon. The fish was fresh and the flavor was good. I could have eaten a few orders of that. Deluxe sashimi combo was also very fresh and delicious. I typically prefer the Shoyu ramen over the spicy miso ramen but the spicy miso ramen here was pretty good; I thought it had more flavor than the Shoyu ramen, but both were not bad. I didn't really care for the Yakisoba, I thought it really lack any flavor even though it was drenched in soy sauce. In fact, that may have been the issue, all I tasted was soy sauce. The uni was fresh and delicious! This is definitely a good go to spot to get your sushi fix. Prices are average and reasonable. Friendly staff, plenty of space in the dining room and they have their own private parking lot. read more

Been craving for sushi for the last few months and this definitely hit the spot. Located in the same plaza at Rite-Aid, it's hard to miss. Parking can be busy during lunch time, but there's usually a parking spot. People who shop at the Oyo Market parks in the same lot. This place is larger than expected. They have front of the house seating area and it seems like they expanded throughout their time in business. We sat in the back, which was weird because not many people were in the front and only one table seated in the back. Oh well, didn't really matter. The staff were attentive and quick to serve us. I couldn't decide because I wanted everything, but I ended up getting the salmon lovers. I cannot remember what my friend got, but it looked like a Nancy's roll. Salmon lovers was the perfect name. I loved every piece of it! The Ichiro roll was light and tasty, maybe a little too much rice on certain pieces but I'm just picky. Seared tuna and avocado on the inside topped with more salmon! 5 pieces of salmon sashimi was thick and fresh. How I missed having sashimi! I was really stuffed by the last piece. Love, love this establishment. Cute decor, warm interior, and quick service. It felt so inviting to sit down and be greeted with a very extensive menu. The food. Wow, the Kaizen ramen my girlfriend and I got was very full of seafood flavor. It had so much scallop, shrimp, squid, and seaweed. So fresh and well made. I barely tasted any ocean-y flavor from the broth, so I'm very impressed. Rolls were great! I reccomend the Nancy Roll. Full of unagi (eel) and that mayo and unagi sauce. Full of flavor. I do say some of the rolls have quite a bit of rice on them, so maybe if they came with less rice, that would make the fish shine more. Came here for a late lunch with family. I got here around 1:40 pm on a Saturday and it was just after lunch rush. There were still a few customers here finishing up their lunch. I was greeted by a waitress and let her know it was a table for 6. She brought me to a back room that can accommodate bigger crowds. We all ordered a different variety of items and they were all good. I got the chicken Katsu curry since it's my favorite Japanese dish. My siblings all got various noodles and ramen. Service was good. They refilled our waters once or twice. The restaurant looked clean and had lots of seating. Costumers were still coming in when we were getting ready to Leave around 3 pm. Only con is the parking lot, which is shared with other shops and it goes up fast. Parking spaces are also really small. Decent shop overall. read more

Akebono is always consistent with quality of food, service and ambiance! My last review in 2018 shows how things have not changed in 6 years-how's that for consistency!! There is always a crowd awaiting seating but you really don't have to wait more than 5-10 minutes as patrons are quickly serviced and exit in an even flow. Once you place your order it is served to you within 10 minutes, hot, delicious and in generous portions. Sushi is fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. The assorted bento boxes with favorites of tempura, tonkatsu, Saba, etc. are a "whole meal deal" but you can also order the items individually and expect to get a take home box as the portions are generous. It is great to know you can always go to Akebonos for delicious, freshly made Japanese cuisine! read more

Nice beer and saki selection, very good miso soup, eatamami, mixed tempura and little salads to start. The Nigiri was impressive: large melt in your mouth yellowtail, salmon. The scallop (chopped w/mayo which we asked for specifically) was delicious and huge. After reading many yelp reviews, we planned to order 5 rolls for the table. Luckily we started with 3 rolls. I haven't been to Akebono in years and it definitely deserves an updated review and upgraded star count. I woke up craving cold noodles, and most of the places close to home were closed until dinner time. Thank goodness for all day open hours at Akebono on the weekends to satisfy this preggo's cravings!! I didn't remember them having such a variety on their menu but I wanted to order one of EVERYTHING. I restrained myself and picked two appetizers to go with my cold noodles, but I'll be back soon for the ramen, gyudon, and curry. The ebi sunomono was a refreshing start to our meal but I wish the sunomono had a stronger pickled flavor. It was perfect to add onto my noodles though. The takoyaki was delicious, and I'm glad it wasn't burning hot inside so I could actually enjoy it. On to my main dish, the hayashi chuka. I had trouble deciding between all of the cold noodles since soba also sounded good, but this one was the closest to the one I was craving at another restaurant and I'm glad I chose it! It comes on this huge platter and it was so yummy. Perfect amount of sauce without being too drenched. I wish it came with some kind of chili or hot mustard or something but I added the wasabi that came with my husband's meal and that made it all come together! The toppings are pretty generous too. I could've probably ate it all but would've regretted it so I split it into half to enjoy for later. Service was pretty good, and all of our food came out super fast, as expected since we only had one cooked dish technically. The service was great. We were promptly seated upon arrival. Our server was very affable. We received our food, to go containers, and the check in a timely manner. We didn't get our drinks until after receiving the main dishes. We had to remind our server as we were fairly thirsty. I love the ambiance. There were an abundance of Japanese art, which was really pleasant to look at. For our appetizers, we ordered the geso and the tempura, which I enjoyed. The fire salmon roll was just okay. I could not taste the salmon. The roll had too much teriyaki sauce. What I enjoyed the most is the black garlic tonkatsu ramen. The broth was very flavorful. The chasu was so good...it was melt in my mouth tender and deliciously flavored. The noodle was soft and chewy. I would prefer a soft boiled egg instead of a hard boiled egg. This Japanese restaurant has earned high regards in our family circle. Whenever Joe K's relatives come to visit, Akebono is on our specialty list of places to meet and eat! The food is always top notch, prepared to perfection, and has the ability to satisfy your sushi cravings. Our party of eight ordered a multitude of sushi dishes that I lost track of the names for some. We also had several other non sushi dishes, such as edamame, cucumber salad, shrimp & vegetable tempura, Ramen with tofu, miso soup, steamed rice and green salad with a tasty dressing. But lets just say, everything was a work of art and so delicious! There were no left overs! I couldn't help myself and ordered a bottle of Hana Awaka sake to try. It had a sweet, sparkling peach flavor that I enjoyed immensely. A few other family members shared a bottle of unfiltered sake called Nigori. The wait staff did an amazing job at keeping everyone comfortable and happy. Including Joe's mother who dislikes seafood!
