Stopped here for dinner with family of five. We were seated promptly. Normally I understand being busy and understaffed however, we were seated well before a party of ten (About 10 mins), this party was served drinks and food right away. They were done, we were still waiting for food 40 mins later. Everyone at my table ate at different times. I was very disappointed didn't enjoy dinner even though the food was good. This really isn't a bistro given the menu and decor, but it is a nice place to enjoy a meal or to watch a game at the bar with a plasma TV.. The cooked food, such as the katsu don, fills a large bowl and your tummy. The portions for the sea bass and mackerel, are decent for the price. However, the rolls were mediocre for the price and size no matter how creative the "Manhattan" roll tried to be. Service is fast and friendly with frequent refills on water. The ambiance is bright and warm for a sit down meal. A complimentary dish was provided since it was meant for another table. Parking is ample in the lot. read more

Danville is oversaturated with sushi spots, and to be honest, I haven't tried them all. That is probably because we're perfectly happy with Akira when we don't want to venture out of town. I like good quality nigiri and a few rolls and some sake, and I've always been pleased with the quality and price of what Akira offers. Nothing particularly exotic, but it does the trick. My kids like the noodle and rice dishes as well, and they always come out super quick to tame the starving boys. There is ample parking in the back, and I've almost never had to wait for a table, even when popping in at 6:30p looking for a table of six last night. Service is usually friendly and fast. The fried calamari was a little spicy for my taste but it had a good flavor to it. They were pretty busy so as a result service was a bit slow. Incredibly friendly and accommodating wait staff, prompt service, great food, low key environment. I eat sushi here at least twice a month (probably more if I am truly being honest). Small parking lot but I would walk miles to get my favorite rolls here. Always fresh and cooked to perfection. The Golden Gate and Danville have become my staple rolls but I don't think you can go wrong with anything here. -Garlic Edamame: I request light garlic after I learned my lesson and had garlic breath for an entire day after (brushed my teeth 6 times that day lol fresh garlic will do that) -Avocado Ball: one of my favorites. I love avocado and spicy tuna and it's literally spicy tuna covered in a ball of avocado - Dinner combination are great proportions and served piping hot (favorites are sesame chicken, short ribs or chicken teriyaki) - Disclaimer* I am not a fan of crab so I tend to stay away from any roll with crab meat BUT the Danville roll is an exception.. MUST TRY - Golden Gate: any roll with unagi, spicy tuna and avocado is a roll for me and this taste the same every time I order it. Went here last night and there was an employee getting a to go order ready for the man in front of us when we walked in the door. She never acknowledged our presence not even with eye contact for a good five minutes. Then these three women come in the door behind us. She immediately walks up to them and super enthusiastically says "hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!" 30 seconds later she is standing right next to me and telling them she has a table for them and I have to step out of the way to let them through. She comes back and still doesn't even look at us and I said "Excuse me but we have been standing here for a long time and you just seated those women who just walked in the door behind us." She says "oh so sorry, so sorry I didn't know who got here first," which was a lie because she was looking that direction when they walked in and she walked straight to them and I told her this (except for calling her a liar straight out.) She finally seats us on the patio as we preferred. Someone brought us water right away but ten minutes went by and no one came out to take our order and when I saw those three women getting their order taken that was enough. Once you mess up you have an opportunity to make it up to the customer but continuing to make these other customers a priority when we had already waited over 20 minutes was adding insult to injury so we just got up and left. read more

I was contemplating to either go to this place or the one across the road. I ordered a salad, California rolls, chicken katsu dinner, yellowtail tuna, and spicy tuna rolls. Well, upon ordering, I begin to realize that I should have picked the other restaurant across the street lol. The salad was good to eat because it has served cold and crispy, which add the right way of eating salad on a summer night. So with my excellent taste experience from the salad, I was anticipating that the rest of the food would be excellent. Tho, it was disappointing when the rolls sort of bland because of the rice and vinegar blending was not right. Well, it seems to me the rating went down from there. Spending over $70 for some rolls may not be a good idea to spend it here. Perhaps they should put extra time on blending the rice for the rolls. Asians like me know how it's done. So maybe this place will be busy next time when they change the formulation on rice rolls. read more

This place is awful if you order a roll it's a super thin thin slice of fish on top. So thin it is translucent. Obviously this place isn't true to the fish called sushi originally from Japan. So please tell me why anyone would just make it a bad name for sushi? Annoying and they have a very cheap attitude with their mess ups. We came here for my husband's birthday lunch the day after we made a 13 hour drive from Phoenix. Japanese food (especially sushi) is his favorite cuisine and we had wanted to try this place even though I am still in a bit of mourning over the loss of Masala. We walked in to a very loud restaurant. This was due to some kind of celebration taking place with a mix of people aging in range from what looked like 50's-80's! We were seated in a booth and service was slow due to the amount of people already in the restaurant. I am assuming there are still a few kinks they need to work out here, but I will say that the food was really good. The restaurant looks completely different than Masala did. There is of course the sushi bar and there is also another bar for drinks. Lots of seating, dark hardwoods and well, read the other reviews about the decor. We all had tea and it was served in a small cast iron pot. The dishes they used were pretty and the chopsticks were made out of real dark wood and are the kind that are reused. We all shared edamame and a dragon roll. They have lunch specials during the week that are very reasonable. For $7.95, I had chicken teriyaki (chicken breast meat) that came with rice, salad and miso soup. The daughter had salmon teriyaki and the husband a Chirashi bowl that came with the chef's selection. It was beautifully presented and he ate everything including a super spicy salmon poke that he only ate because he said it would have been rude not to finish. With the plethora of sushi places here in downtown Danville, we will see if this one lasts and which ones go out if this place succeeds (which we hope they do). Parking might be a bit of a problem the busier this place gets but I am glad I read Alexis M's review while on vacation so I didn't have to work real hard at finding a good place to take my husband for his special day! read more

The only thing I've found to be Japanese is the beer. There is nothing authentic about this place. If you just want sushi and beer, this might be for you. Otherwise, don't go here. VERY fresh sushi. A nice toro sushi special with 4 different types. My favorite was the fatty tuna but the Hamachi the night I was there (Wednesday, 1/25/2017) was a very close 2nd. Nice environment. I sat at the sushi bar and the only reason I did not give 5 stars is that the service was good but not great that night. It was busy but. It overwhelmingly so, but only 2 sushi chefs so not a lot of attention for me and I was sitting alone that night at the sushi bar. I am probably spoiled where I live, but since I travel for work I go to many different sushi bars and have had a little more attention sitting alone. I decided to give Akira Bistro another shot and I am really glad that I did. Akira is a solid 5 star restaurant for both lunch and dinner. There is so much to like about Akira: * Delicious and generously apportioned sushi rolls, entrees, and noodle dishes. * Friendly service that is helpful and not a distraction to conversation. * Prices are reasonable and comparable to Dublin's Amakara restaurant. * Terrific location just on the cusp of Danville's glorious downtown. Akira also has gorgeous decor with a Japanese chic motif and elegant yet comfortably designed furniture. The flatware that Akira boasts is top of the line with a sophisticated and yet imaginative flair that foodies that are fans of both traditional and fusion style restaurants will enjoy. Akira also offers plenty of seating with varied options such as at the sushi bar, on high stools, standalone tables, booths, and an outdoor patio with heaters that will be perfect during the spring and summer. So how about the food? For starters, Akira has a tasty miso soup that is just right for the chilly winter day that we visited. The high quality toasted rice green tea was also a welcomed addition to our meal. I recommend the Rainbow Roll for the fresh and delicious walu, salmon, hamachi, fresh crab, and avocado. The Yaki Soba is also an absolute delight with tasty buckwheat noodles and stir fried chicken and choice veggies that are prepared in a fashion similar to chow mein. Akira boasts a full bar and hi-def wall-mounted flat screen television that are both perfect for happy hour. Although I didn't get a chance to try their beverages during my first visit, I do plan to give Akira's happy hour a shot down the road. This place made me realize how good sushi is supposed to be. It's a pretty new restaurant. The ambiance is great(classy and nicely decorated). The portions were very satisfying especially for the price. I tried the Kobe beef and a few different rolls so far, it was absolutely delicious. The beef was tender, and the rolls were perfect temperature. The only difficult thing was figuring out what to order because there are so many things to choose from the menu. The environment is kind of hard to explain, something you would have to experience for yourself. Very comfortable, clean, and friendly - not really what I expect from a sushi house. I think it's because it's not just an in and out sushi bar. It's more of a place to dine and enjoy your evening. Also, the owner is very friendly. He walked around the tables and made sure people were having a pleasant time. The staff and the bartender are very courteous as well. Akira has recently opened in same location of the former Masala Indian Fusion restaurant. Mrs Coot and I arrived shortly after opening one Thursday evening and the place was already half-full; impressive for a restaurant that has been open only a couple weeks. The menu is a trifold, packed with appetizers, sushi, meals, more and more. The selection of lunch and dinner items are so large there is a supplemental menu just for the couple dozen or so unique, local rolls. While trying to make it through the huge menu we were greeted by the Owner. While he has been in the restaurant business for many years, this is his first sushi place. The fish is fresh and the tempura not heavy with batter. The variety or rolls are wonderful, unique and named after local points of interest. The rolls are very large, so don't let your eyes do the ordering. One must admit that there seems to be a sushi place on every corner in Danville/San Ramon (and we've been to many), but Akira is a cut above. Its a keeper for us and will be one of our regular places. read more

I love Sushi and I had high hopes for this place, however, it was just Ok! Some rolls were up to par and some were not good at all comparing the same rolls to other sushi restaurants. The miso soup tasted odd, as if it had chlorine added to it .... must have been the water! They also allow dogs in the restaurant, on the booth, which is absolutely against the FDA regulations. The dog was a small fluffy mix. I would have understood if it were a guide dog, but that was not the case. This place rocks! From the time that you walk in, you have a great experience. We were initially greeted by the owner of the restaurant and he seated us. The waiters and waitresses came over very quickly to help us through the menu. We ordered a bottle of wine, which was brought over by Eli, the bartender. He asked us our names and then asked us what we thought of the wine list and if there was anything we would like to see in the future. We gave him our feedback and he was very thankful for it. The food was great! Unlike other sushi places that serve dry or rubbery fish, this sushi melts in your mouth. It's fabulous! Plus, at a lot of other sushi places, they make the sushi with way too much rice. Here, they put in just the right amount. Here, you feel like you're getting more of the fish than the rice, which is a good tasteful experience. Lastly, I liked the fact that the rolls advertised as "spicy" were, in fact, spicy. I feel like too many places advertise a spicy tuna roll and when you take your first bite, you're like, "where's the spice?" Here, you can taste the spice, but it's not too much. It's just enough to give it a really nice flavor. So, as we're leaving Eli and the owner, but thanked us by name, which summarized the entire experience. The people at Akira take the time not only with their food, but with their patrons. Great overall experience and we will definitely be back! read more

I have to start off by asking: how do you mess up miso soup?! The soup somehow lacked flavor and yet was gross at the same time. The main courses came out suspiciously fast, which made me wonder if all the rolls and the teriyaki were pre-made. The taste confirmed my suspicions: 1. The Spicy Tuna roll: no flavor, horrible texture, not spicy 2. The Rock'n'roll: no flavor, sticky and hard to chew - we could not even finish this roll the eel was so bad 3. The Tempura roll: not bad, but certainly not memorable and wouldn't bring us back 4. The Beef Teriyaki: so tough and possibly harder to chew than jerky To top it all off the horrible food was overpriced, the servers were rude, and when you asked them questions like, "Is this the miso that comes with the teriyaki?," they could not answer since they did not speak English. Don't waste your money or your time - I have never had Japanese food/rolls that I could not eat! We considered leaving in the middle of the meal and going to get dinner elsewhere, which says something. read more

I stumbled across this place a few weeks ago with a girlfriend and the whole experience was FANTASTIC! The decor is beautiful, the sushi bar itself is gorgeous but more importantly the sushi chef there, Ricky, is THE BEST..i knew him from a prior sushi place I frequented years ago and was thrilled to see him here as I have been bouncing around looking for another high quality and affordable new favorite place. But the # 1 reason this place is so great is the fresh, generous portions of sushi not to mention the wonderful various array of rolls as well as a complete japanese food menu and the specials are outstanding too. I have had the assorted sashimi platter, the Dublin roll, the Diablo roll, the fresh oysters, uni, tako salad, and a baked scallop roll I don't recall the name but everything surpassed my expectations... wow.
