We literally eat here once a week and I have yet to review! This is our favorite sushi spot in Danville. We love their salt and pepper calamari! It's the best calamari we have ever had. Something about the frying they do or breading makes it so tasty. We love the spicy garlic edamame, Tahoe roll, fried rice, house salad and seaweed salad! We honestly love everything. We tried the poke salad for the first time yesterday and it was good as well, but I wish there was a lot more seaweed salad included in it. Overall, a must-try if you're in the East Bay and craving some sushi! The only downside is that the waitresses don't attend to certain sections, they kind of just float the entire restaurant, so it's sometimes hard to get someone's attention or ask for things throughout the meal. Decent sushi spot in Danville. Parking was super easy! No need to worry about fighting for street parking or finding a spot in the Railroad Ave lots. My group of 4 had no problem getting seated on a Sunday during lunch. Service was quick, however everyone's dish came out at different times so that was a bit off.. My boyfriend and I shared a Golden Scallop roll, a Shogun roll, as well as Yaki Udon with chicken. Both rolls were fresh and tasty! The yaki udon was also good, maybe a bit too salty though. I would come back to Akira if I happen to be in the area, but I won't plan to make a trip out of it. read more

I didn't anticipate eating here, but was in the area getting professional photos of my newborn and had about an hour to kill. Although I wanted to try Forbes Mill Steakhouse, I ultimately wandered here because of the outdoor seating. 5 stars for the ambiance/decor and 2.5 stars for the food ... I mean we are in the Bay and there are so many really great sushi spots, right?!?! The restaurant is very modern, clean, has a full bar, and an outside patio. I chose to sit outside which was very nice and enjoyable. Service was very kind and attentive. I ordered the small lunch salad, the blossom roll, and the diablo roll. I found the rolls just to be OK. They were fresh, but not as tasty as I am used to. The blossom roll was bland with no real flavor. The diablo roll would have been acceptable, but the sauce on top tasted more like mayonnaise than anything else. I really couldn't get passed that while I was eating it so I picked most of the salmon and sauce off the top. Of course the salad was YUM and I wish that had come in a bowl twice the size! :-) All in all, I would come back and try other menu items ... but I'm in no hurry! read more

Yes, I'm really giving Akira 5 stars and I reserve 5 stars for restaurants that go above and beyond. We really loved Akira! I mean so much that I pretty firmly can say, we've found our go to sushi place in the area. #1-It's beautifully decorated. It's open, fresh and modern, all without being pretentious or over the top. #2-The staff is really awesome. The owner greeted everyone at the door and came around and asked our names and shook our hands and thanked us multiple times for coming in. Scott W. will be happy to know they have done away with the crazy door buzzer. Eli the bartender was super cool and asked us our names and when he came back to check on us, remembered both of them. #3-They have a cool wine list. We tried an organic chardonnay from Chili. It was interesting...quite oakey, not my favorite, but a cool one to try. Eli asked us what our favorite wines were and if we'd like to see some of them on the wine list...so if you see Cupcake Chardonnay make it on the wine list, you can thank me. ;) #4-We felt they had an amazing selection of rolls. I will say that a lot of the specialty rolls have some form of tempura in them that while good, isn't so good for you. The specialty rolls are amazing but definitely not good for you. But in the main menu there is a full selection of traditional rolls along with sashimi, hand rolls, cooked fish and meats. #5-The fish was SO fresh and cut so thick. I've had sushi before where you feel like you're gnawing on a flank steak, trying to eat the cut of fish on top of the roll. Here you didn't even have to chew. Seriously, the fish just melted in your mouth. I don't normally like salmon rolls as they can be really fishy but this was the freshest salmon I have ever had at a sushi restaurant. We really could not get over how fresh the fish was. #6-The spicy tuna is REALLY spicy. I am so tired of sushi restaurants calling tuna, spicy tuna, when really, it's just tuna! Their spicy tuna, is really spicy. I'm not talking 5 alarm hot wings spicy, just a nice touch of spiciness left on your tongue. The Volcano roll had extra spicy tuna, which was a little too soft but super excellent tasting. #7-I felt the prices were very reasonable and on par with other sushi restaurants of the same caliber. Most of the standard rolls were about $6.95-$9.95 and the specialty rolls were all around $11.95-$13.95. But they are huge! I believe each roll has 8 generously sized pieces. #8-they didn't load the sushi with a ton of rice to make it appear bigger. There was just enough rice to roll it, but it was LOADED with fresh fish, avocado, tempura, etc... We ordered: ~Edamame ~Rainbow roll ~Raider roll (and it pained me to order this since I'm a big Niner fan but it is really tasty) ~Danville roll (when in Rome...also amazing, although I did have to laugh the the Danville roll was coated in tempura...don't they know the Danville roll should be the low-carb/low-fat roll ;) ) ~Volcano roll We loved every one and brought home a take out menu so that we can make sure we try different rolls next time because so many looked amazing! I loved Masala Indian Fusion that used to be here. I'm hoping this can also be a restaurant that we love. Just not sure yet. Yes, the restaurant is decorated lovely. Different than what it was before. I think it's funny that they turned the entry to the right instead of to the left like it used to be. I like that there are booths, sushi bar, and a high table. Such diverse seating. There is only low sodium soy sauce on the table. I ordered a hot tea. It wasn't very hot, but it did come in a cast iron pot with actual rice and leaves swelling with fragrance, which was great. We started with tuna tataki in the garlic ponzu sauce. Four small pieces. They were good, but not the best ever. Plus it was very cold, although it was supposed to be seared. I really enjoyed the thinly sliced onions, which very closely reminded me of something I ate in Tokyo. Although for $10.95, I'm not ordering that again. I followed it up with the Iron Horse roll, which according to the menu says contains crab, green onions, radishes, shrimp and spicy sauce. There were no green onions, which was part of the reason I got this roll because I was choosing between this and another that did not list green onions, but wasn't spicy. When I asked the server, she said that although the menu might list green onions, they aren't supposed to be in there. Um, well, how can I trust any of the other listed ingredients?! I didn't taste any radishes either, not that I cared about that. The shrimp was also tempura, and I could tell from that one piece that I wouldn't eat an order of tempura. The coating was thicker than I liked and didn't have any panko crunch. I suspected that the spicy sauce was straight up sriracha, which kept my mouth on fire. My guy had miso sea bass. Tasted fine, but the portions were a little small. I liked the fried green onions that they rested atop. We were both a little hungry after that, but the check came out so fast, we didn't order dessert and went elsewhere for a coffee and sweet. I'm feeling mixed about this place. One thing that bothered me was that some of the staff spoke Chinese. Overall the service was good and quick. I may come back for the lunch specials, but dinner seems a bit expensive. read more

We've had many meals here before however the vibe was definitely off last night - hamachi sashimi placed on plain plate without usual orchid and Japanese platter - so white on white visual. Servers seemed rushed, unhappy, and tired even though it was only 5:30pm. Even rice was clumpy and not fluffy. Hamachi Kama seemed smaller than usual. (everyone speaks chinese here). eventually the lone waitress directed me to a faraway table. handed menu(s) one had an whole page of rolls (hint, hint) another folded menu had donburi, dinner, and lunch specials on the lower right. flatscreen: news music: soft rock sampling: lunch special: chirashi (11.95) -miso soup, average, not too salty nor too tasty -salad had spring mix with lettuce and some dressing. salad fresh, lettuce mix-in no doubt to save $$ -chirashi: 2 suzuki, 2 hamachi, 3 tuna, 2 salmon. average sized, average freshness. salmon freshest. -scoop of nicely vinegared sushi rice -"dirt" of seafood bits with veggie bits. nice taste and crunchiness temaki: -noticed "soy sauce" in small porcelain pourers, tasted soy, salty, definitely not kikkoman soy which taste sweet. didn't see any green bottled soy anywheres (light sodium). didn't ask. -served only cold water, think tea is extra. didn't ask -special wasn't fulfilling. 2.5 stars -food quality is above average. portions are controlled. -pork ramen is 10.95 here.. -cost cutting obvious : mix of lettuce and cheaper soy sauce. read more

Definitely had better. I will say this: I'm not a Sushi guy; I go for the teriyaki chicken! My wife and I came in and asked to moved to a table with chairs as the booth was real cramped. When we moved, they took our menu's away and didn't check in our table for almost 10 minutes. We had to flag a waiter down to order some Edamame. My wife ordered the Danville, and our friend ordered the Manhattan. They both finished, said nothing special. I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken dinner, which came with 2 sliced chicken breasts smothered in sauce and a bowl of brown rice (for $1 extra). The chicken was a bit dry, and the sauce tasted very generic. I had to drip the sauce off each piece as I ate it. The side salad it came with was caked in dressing as well... not typically what I have seen in other restaurants. Definitely wont be back for the Teriyaki Chicken. My wife didn't seem to mind the sushi. Nice atmosphere, 2 TV's. read more

I found this place on Groupon. Unfortunately I came one day and they were closed. I think I came at 3pm and they open at 5pm. I had busy month and before I could return back my groupon just expired. It expired on 11/15 and I came to try this restaurant on 11/18. I asked the server if they would still except it. I knew it was only expired 3 days but it was my fault for not catching the expiration date sooner. Lesson learned. My server hesitated but than approved the groupon. This shows great customer service on her part. She didn't have to do it. I would except whatever she could do. I'm not the kind of customer who is fishing for deals. I'm a sushi lover and genuinely wanted to try this place. I'm glad I did. I love chirashi and it's hard to find a good restaurant that will make good chirashi. The fish was excellent and the presentation was great too. I eat sushi 3-5x a week and will definitely come back. Thank you! read more

My honey has been hiding this place from me for the last 3 years! Had dinner here for our last date night and i loved everything we ordered. This is located in downtown Danville. Started off with the Butterfish, Ami Ebi (they fry the shrimp head for you), Grilled Seabass (flaky and cooked perfectly! Also a steal at $12.95.) & Salmon Skin roll. All were delicious! Then we shared a Lion King Roll- (oozing with salmon & unagi goodness...and the roll was a good size). Also had the Teriayki Beef & Tempura Bento (tempura comes with two shrimps & veggies)- Miso Soup & Salad. Don't forget to include some hot sake with your meal, it will liven up your night! =) I'm glad there is another good Japanese restaurant in the East Bay! read more

This is fine. Nothing special, but it was much better than we had hoped for. This was literally our third choice after finding Chow and La Boulange totally packed. Disappointing as we were really looking forward to finally trying Chow for lunch. This place was not crowded at all. The kids had a Onayaki Donburi and it was a large portion and very good. I can't remember what my husband and I ate. But I remember being pleased enough with both the price, quality and portion size. I don't think I tried the sushi though. read more

Well well well, I'd have to say I'm impressed with the quality of Sushi my Man and I shared here last night. We have become snobbish about our sushi after eating some amazing dishes at Nobu in NYC and Katsuya's in Encino. We've been searching for something local that would fill our sushi urges (without having to hop on a plane) and this might just be the place. This location has been a few different places, and I hope Akira catches on. The interior is light and airy and they have some outdoor seating too. We a lovely Miso Salmon (they also have a Miso Sea Bass and Hamachi) , and a wonderful spider roll as well as very large Unagi. Our California roll was made with "fresh Crab" as the menu states and really firm and delicious. But the stand out item of our meal was the Blue Fin Tuna served in a garlic ponzo sauce, that was "melt in your mouth" amazing.....mmmmmmmm. It was really hard to choose, because the menu was filled with so many wonderful sounding items. Now for those of you who love those monster rolls, they have a special menu of those too. To me they just have too much going on and you lose out on the unique flavors of the good fresh fish, but that's just my opinion and I did see a few go by and they looked very nice. We washed down our meal with a nice cold bottle of Saki and my husband chased that with a Sapporo. Service was great and prompt, we did go early on a Thursday but all in all they had people streaming in. I think once people find out about this secret it's gonna be the new "hot spot" for really great Sushi. We will definately be back, and are happy to have good quality Sushi close by! read more

I have been to Akira many times over the years. Tonight's dinner was abysmal. We ordered chicken teriyaki and miso salmon. The chicken was so tough as to be inedible and the salmon was overcooked, dry and tasteless. Pretty pricey for what we got...it all went in the garbage. read more

I was there in November when my girls school Comet Fund Committee told us that this restaurant will contribute to the school. By supporting the school, our family tried that out. But that experience was totally disappointing. First of all, if they agreed to contribute to a school, why isn't there a menu for kids? We ended up ordered a full tonkatsu meal for my two young girls. Second, food is very pricy. My husband ordered a 5pc nigiri and 6pc cal roll dinner and cost $15!!! Where in the world can we find these expensive sushi like them? They are no rare raw fish, just tuna, salmon, eel, and shrimp, didn't taste super good and definitely does not worth it at all!!! Think about a grown up man, that serving size is not enough for him, he needed to have a share from the girls! Third, we had been waited too long to have the server to take our bill, they passed by our table several times and saw our credit card is placed on the table, but had no intension to pick it up! I had that idea of just put away my credit card and leave!! What kind of service are we getting there? Poor! Fourth, we calculated how much their contribution will be from us. $3!!! For we spent $60+ at their restaurant, they only willing to contribute $3??? Comparing to other restaurants that also contributing to the school (20% average), this amount is totally unacceptable! Believe it or not, I will never go back for any reason, even their sashimi salad (my order) was very fresh and good. My impression to this restaurant is none! read more

Beautifully plated food in a very nice looking Japanese restaurant. Not to mention free parking in their own lot. I'll have to say that the food was delicious, but I guess I am used to paying a little less since I get the same food in the city for much cheaper, but on less attractive plates. Nonetheless, my company made the meal much more enjoyable than the food itself. So I'll just say the food was just okay. Always liked the place, but oddly enough, a few hours after dining their last night, I got a fraud alert and my credit card had 5 attempted charges at an asian streetwear clothing brand and 1 charge to some random asian website. Hadn't used my credit card for weeks before and this was the only time I used it. So if you want some halfway decent sushi and sake, and a few hundred $ in random charges on your credit card, go here. YAY! I love this place. To me, this is one of the best japanese restaurants in the Danville area. I have come here (and taken out) probably more than 6 times, which is pretty good for only being home for college for about 6 weeks in the past 4 months. So most importantly, I have always experience fresh sushi when coming here. Of course some days are fresher than others, but every experience has been a positive one. In terms of entrees, my two favorite dishes are the tonkatsu and the teriyaki kobe beef. They are both to die for and totally worth getting. The katsu don is bad either except it comes with lots of unnecessary vegetables (in my opinion) and distracts from the art of the tonkatsu. As for service, always friendly and nice. Wiling to help and serve. Atmosphere: could be improved upon but overall is very clean and fairly modern. Definitely, like most definitely, a place to give a chance. read more

I had sushi at Akira with my boyfriend on July 21, 2010. It is a new establishment and you can see that they really care about trying to make their new clients happy. The restaurant has a very nice, open atmosphere. It has a elegant feel about it, with the over hanging oriental umbrellas, stylish lighting and orchids. The staff are attentive to anyone that walks through the door. The waitress that served us was very nice and friendly. The sushi was not bad. The fish was cut thicker than normal. The portions were generous. I ordered the soft shell crab roll. It was so big that I really needed to deconstruct it to eat it. I also ordered agedashi tofu. The tofu they used was too soft. I couldn't pick it up without it falling to shreds. The waitress noticed that the tofu was half eaten and completely destroyed. She asked me what was wrong with it and when I said I couldn't pick it up, she took it off the bill. The hot tea was very good. It was green rice tea. It was very strong and fragrant. They do not serve unsweetened ice tea. Overall the restaurant is nice and the staff seems nice. I think they can make improvements on their sushi but it is a good start.
