We come here for the customer service, and while all of the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, Bruce and Brennan have been my go-to team as the final check to make sure I am not DIY-ing a disaster. I am sure that they have prevented me from hours and hundreds of dollars spent on stupid mistakes. They are what keeps me turning right to go to Ace (rather than left to go to Home Depot). To start, the prices were expensive. I recently moved into a new home with my amazing wife and two daughters & noticed two lightbulbs in our general-room were no 'working' despite my efforts to repair them. When I arrived at Ace Hardware I was greeted by a young-man, Gavin. He offered to help me find the items I needed. I showed the young-man my non-functional 'OSRAM 8029' lightbulb (picture attached below I found online). I was then lead upon a wild-goose chase to the light-bulb section of the store to find what I needed... The young-man tried his best to locate my exact model I required. He was unable to locate the model, despite this store being a 'hardware' store they did not have what I needed. The boy did however find me a "suitable" alternative, though the color-matching was noticeably much more yellow, very much not the "same"... Very poor experience with Alamo ace hardware last weekend. When a paid advertisement on google indicated that it was in stock, I drove all the way out from San Leandro to pick up a red wagon. Inquired to the product when we got there and they offered to order one, as the "in stock" item was the display and the manager wasn't willing to take the time to get it down for us. This lack of service is why in-person retail is dying. I was willing to spend $70 more for the item if I could get it today... instead I went home and got it the next day from Amazon without the nasty attitude and high price. If you're not willing to sell what's in store, why even have it listed as "in stock" or available for pickup that day?? read more

I have lived in Danville since 1994 and never been into Ace Hardware. Today I went and wow. I have never been to a store with such incredible service. Someone (I can't remember the name, but he had a white beard and white hair) greeted me and asked me what I needed. He copied my key right away and I was out the door in 15 minutes. Welp, i placed an order on their website and i paid for it, got the confirmation and everything and then about an hour later i get two emails telling me my order had been canceled. Only no reason why, no information whatsoever. So i call the store and am greeted by a recorded message saying yes, they are indeed open. However after trying every extension on their phone tree, no one answered the phone and there was no opportunity to leave a voicemail. Is this what our local community hardware stores have come to these days? If i wanted a cold lack of customer service, i can turn to Amazon any day. Only with Amazon I am much more likely to actually receive the product I ordered. Henceforth, I will "remember the Alamo" Ace and not return there. read more

Every time I come here I never have a problem getting help (unlike the big box stores). Today I had a project that required very small machine screws and acorn cap nuts. I didn't have much hope that such a specialty item could be found let alone finding it in the store even if they did carry it. I was helped by a kind gentleman named Bruce. Might as well be closed. Plenty of merchandise, but you can't get to it. Carts can't go in nursery, so you have to hand-carry everything. Line is 15+ people long, only one cashier. THEY WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO PAY FIR PLANTS inside!!! The reason? "We don't know the price" and when I said it's ACE MERCHANDISE IN AN ACE STORE, what do you mean you don't know the price?" Her answer? So glad "Ace" didn't go away! I mean a few years back this used to be Yardbirds, and I think Ace bought them out, but we loved having this local hardware close by. This "old style feel" hardware has a little of everything, tools, supplies, plants, even toys...and then there's "the kitchen"!!!! Love the Kitchen- lots of great kitchen items that make beautiful gifts, and around the corner cool wooden inspirational signs and lovely baby room decor. Had some real issues with the Christmas tree lot at Alamo Ace hardware this year. I wish that I could very honestly leave two reviews since the inside store is always a great place to shop so 5/5 for that, but the experience I had this year in the garden center tree lot was very poor compared to past years and is 100% deserving of being reviewed. They had a great selection of trees this year which all seemed very fresh (which was a huge plus), but honestly the whole experience otherwise was a bit of a let down. In the prior years that my family and I had come here everyone working seemed to be very knowledgeable about the trees and the lot was very clean and had a great atmosphere, this year however it couldn't have been any more different. The staff member helping us ended up taking about 30 minutes to tie our tree to the top of our car. 30 minutes would've been perfectly fine had the tree actually been tied on tight and correctly. Even with 2 lines over the top of the tree, (that were for some reason tied through the interior and around the interior column in our car??), the tree came very very close to rolling off on the way home. We ended up having to pull over and I redid the loosely tied lines that they threw on there. The guy helping us and his fellow staff members obviously had no idea what they were doing. Not a great feeling having the tree you just paid upwards of $100 hanging off the side of your car while you're driving through town. I'm not sure if we came on an off day or if their staff is really just this bad and inexperienced at helping with Christmas trees this year (maybe because of Covid?) but I would definitely steer clear of this place this year! I must say I haven't used this place as much as I should and I forget that it is so close to home! I recently purchased a table and had it sent to the location because I didn't want to pay for shipping They have everything from smoker pellets , plants, lighting, DIY self project starts to finish and more! The staff are so unbelievably friendly and so kid friendly which is nice. I always remember great experiences with this store because the employees will go above and beyond my expectations! A couple years ago, I bought a screw for my license plate and the gentleman came outside and did it for me. A couple weeks ago, I had lost my keys. I thought I had lost my original key and the gentleman offered to make me a whole new set. I explained I may have left the keys there and he found them and set them aside. I've been shopping at the Alamo store since it was Yardbirds -- and then Home Depot -- and now Alamo Ace Hardware. Service has always been outstanding, the prices are competitive--although not always as low as Lowe's or Home Depot (although they make up for it with a military-and-veterans discount year-round and frequent "rewards" coupons), parking is spacious, and the staff are VERY knowledgeable about what they've got in stock and where to find it in the store. I've never had a problem with returning an item that didn't work out (although I admit I almost always pay with a credit card, so they've got a record of my purchase even if I don't have the receipt). One staff member always greets me with the question "What are you looking for, doctor?" -- and it took me a few visits before I realized he didn't actually know I AM a doctor: he greets almost everyone with the same question. The company now has four locations (Alamo, Danville/Blackhawk, San Ramon, and Dublin). I visited the Crow Canyon store, which is a lot larger (a 38,000-square-foot multi-level hardware and home-goods superstore), and the only thing I missed was a garden center like Alamo has. The selection of live plants in Alamo can't match the variety at Sloat, Lowe's in Concord, or HD, but I'm generally in a plant-shopping mode only a couple of times a year. For most of my small household projects, I like the convenience of the Alamo location because I don't have to make a 20-to-30-mile roundtrip drive to HD or Lowe's (which can take up to 45-60 minutes most weekdays on 680). I HIGHLY recommend shopping at this local family-owned store! read more

If you spend over a specific amount, they will build and deliver the grill for free, which made this amazing birthday surprise so much easier!! We moved to the area about a year and a half ago and come to Alamo Hardware and Garden all the time. Everyone that works there is friendly and helpful. I want to send a shout out to three people in particular. First, to Sam. Thank you! On two occasions she helped us, most recently with a purchase yesterday. She was gracious and made sure she got us someone to help us with a bunch of questions. She also offered us a gracious discount and helped ring us up quickly. There was a young gentleman who helped us try a few different umbrellas, each time taking his time and helping us see different products, colors, all with a courteous smile. Visit on 6/13/17: Came here to get some keys cut. The employee was clearly annoyed at having to help me, super hasty about it, and cut on the wrong side. Therefore, keys did not work and I returned two days later to get them recut. The next guy attempted and finally said, "We can't copy your model." Well, two stars because he was good about refunding and referred me to a locksmith. Beyond rival customer service! I bought a Gozney Pizza Dome a few weeks after they stocked them. The manager had already tested out the floor model and was able to give me advice on how to use it. They hadn't gotten all the accessories yet. They called in to another store and one of the missing accessories. They had it ready when I picked it up the pizza oven. They weren't able to get the door accessory until the following week. The manager called me when they had it and drove off at my house in Pleasant Hill. read more

I came to this Ace Hardware location with my Husband and his Dad to pick up a few trees that we special ordered for our yard and to look around for other plants because their nursery carries a good plant selection that you will be hard pressed to find elsewhere. And they do special orders. We didn't get to go inside the main store, but it looks huge and seems to carry everything. They even have one side of the store dedicated to just kitchen and housewares. Cool! The parking lot is large and easy to navigate and has a Starbucks on one end of it. Nice. The garden section itself is rather large and has a ton of quality plants to choose from. They have 6 packs and annuals out front on one side along with a small selection of sod, and more seasonal items on the other side out front. Inside the nursery there is a smallish indoor area with fertilizer and chemicals as well as indoor plants and pots. Outside you will find all the trees, shrubs, flowers, ferns, etc. as well as a nice sized section filled with cacti and succulents. The employees were friendly and helpful and it was nice to see that they had 2-3 working on a Saturday morning to help the customers coming in. Everything was organized and well taken care of so I had no problem spending my money here. Alamo is a small town with the cheapest house going for $1.2 million, but the prices of the plants were still reasonable and the same prices that I would find back home. I will be back. read more

Thank Goodness we have Alamo Ace Hardware within a few miles from us. Home Depot is too far and doesn't have the staff to help. I go in several times a year (more than 10) for paint samples because I'm constantly re-painting our rooms. The employees are helpful, friendly and very patient. (sorry I can't decide on paint colors). They have a lot of fun items like art supplies, foodie supplies, plants, and decor that makes shopping fun. It's not just your typical hardware store. They will also fix your screens that the cat messes up so you don't have to buy new ones. Lots of parking which is a bonus. read more

Wow, I rarely write reviews but I was so blown away by Sam and Tommy. Sam was so patient while my family and I tried to match a sun umbrella with the patio set we were purchasing. I seem to need something at ace at least once a week between inside and outside the house, and the people helping customers have always been great. But today I had such an extraordinary experience I have to write about it. I'm staining my deck, and I started out this morning at Kelly Moore in San ramon. I walked out, I'll never go there again. They were rude, arrogant and entirely unhelpful, I guess they only like the professional painters there. Besides that, their prices were double those at Ace (i so appreciate the many discounts they give). In contrast, when I went to Ace, the paint people were super friendly and helpful and I felt like a real person again, thank you Ace! In particular, both Marty and Michael were incredibly knowledgeable and got me exactly what I wanted. I love how they always have people there to help. There is an Ace Hardware closer to me but I would absolutely drive the extra miles to go to this one. The staff are all so unbelievably helpful and went above and beyond their way to make sure they had the product in stock and ready to go when I arrived at the store. They also helped me load the incredibly heavy grill into my van with a forklift. I was desperate to get my favorite 60 year old beautiful blue lamp fixed. I tried 4 other lamp repair stores in Walnut Creek and Mt Pleasant. I finally stopped at Ace Hardware in Alamo on my way home - thinking no one was going to be able to fix it. It was 5:30 and everyone was going home after working all day and 3 men took an interest in it at different times and they all ended up working an extra hour to get my lamp fixed!!!!! Unbelievable!!! I have bought over $1000. Worth of plants here. I had 2 Italian Cypress plants out of eight that did not survive. I take great care with my yard and garden. I brought the 2 back for refund or exchange. The buyer, garden department manager gave me a 10 minute questioning on my watering practices. Treated me like a criminal. Never been treated like this anywhere. Extremely disappointed in this experience. I have always driven by Home Depot, Lowe's another Ace and 2 nursery's to buy my plants and hardware.
