Alana's had been on my list for a while now, at the recommendation of several friends... and boy, were they right! Alana's is excellent comfort brunch food served quickly and with a smile. There was a short line when we arrived on Saturday morning (there usually is), but we didn't wait more than 5-10 minutes. We ended up getting seated at the counter overlooking the kitchen area, giving us the chance to marvel at the speed of the cooks whipping up breakfast excellence! We ordered two Alana's combos, which is a pretty traditional sampler consisting of eggs, potatoes, toast, and choice of side. But they nailed all aspects of it, and the portion size was just right. But the true highlight of our order was the Swedish oatmeal pancakes. If you come here, you owe it to yourself to give these a shot. The menu itself calls them "famous" and "worth the wait" - and honestly, it's not wrong. They're large and fluffy, it's got a sweet, slightly nutty flavor, and a wonderful oaty texture. We ordered ours with the lingonberry compote, and it was truly the perfect complement to the delicious pancake. Top 3 pancake for sure... and that includes the chocolate chip pancakes my mom made for me growing up. Despite the crowded restaurant, my water and coffee cups were never empty once. It's pretty wild that I had never been here before because I grew up around here but I had my regular brunch places that I was loyal to. But I can totally understand why people love coming here. It's located in a nice area sitting in the park let was a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food tasted very home cooked for sure! the oatmeal pancakes were very ordinary. They were hot and made with oatmeal flour but nothing special. I would like fruit and nut pancakes but they dont offer that here (or anywhere for that matter). I also had orange juice that wasnt made fresh and tasted that way. Last time I came here, I put my name down for a party of two and bigger groups who came twenty minutes after me were seated two minutes after putting their names down. Came to Alana's Cafe this morning while waiting for my car to be serviced and was very impressed by both the quality and the service. I had always noticed Alana's to be busy on the weekends when I come for the farmers market and now I understand why! Began my meal with coffee - cause mornings. Alana's house coffee is pretty standard but I liked that I was topped off multiple times without asking. For my meal I opted for the Sonoma Scramble which comes with bacon, bell peppers, cheese, and a bit of guac ("avocado"). For toast, I opted for the coffee cake. Everything on the plate was really good! Potatoes were crispy on the outside but soft on the inside and seasoned really well. Eggs were fluffy, bacon was plenty (and not soggy), and each bite just worked! The coffee cake was definitely my favorite! It was so moist but chocked full of nuts and a lightly spiced flavor! Quick take: nice brunch spot Alana's never disappoints. My go-to dish is Huevos Rancheros. I ordered a couple of other dishes and hands down the HR is my favorite. I recently ordered the special huevos rancheros. Just the HR with chorizo. Equally yummy. The service is usually quick and friendly. If you really need to get in and out it's doable here. I came here for brunch on a Sunday, and I sat outside. I ordered the Swedish oatmeal pancakes with bacon, and they were pretty good! I really liked the oatmeal flavor in these pancakes. After I ate one pancake, I was cutting into the second pancake and saw that there was plastic in my pancake! I immediately gave my plate to the host, and she took my plate away without an apology or even a suggestion that they would re-make it. It's always customary to visit Alana's Cafe whenever I'm in SF and I was devastated to find out that they removed the street seatings which I know is the city's fault not Alana's but it's very sad to see. The only available seating was at the bar too which is always a tight squeeze however the friendliness of the staff always makes that part forgettable. Diner vibe with home-y feels, Alana's Cafe seems like the place to go to if you want to experience an authentic meal. From the minute I walked in, I was treated so well by every person on staff. I personally believe this is hard to find nowadays, because many restaurants seem to be on auto-pilot. Also, the menu is reasonably priced and you can fill up for a lot less than most places. There's plenty of seating both inside and out, and the cafe is situated on the main road with tons to do before or after a good meal. I opted for the cup of soup and 1/2 sandwich option, as well as a hot tea on this cold day. The soup of the day was curry lentil, which was delicately spiced and tasty, it comes with two pieces of soft focaccia bread, and you can choose between chicken or tuna salad for the sandwich. I went for the latter because it's a classic. It has capers in it, which I can't say I've ever tried in a tuna salad before, but gave the sandwich a nice salty crunch. It's literally oatmeal in pancake form and although it's technically not super healthy, at least I'm getting some fiber. We also ordered a couple other egg-based dishes, but nothing wildly amazing. Servers were friendly and there was plenty of outdoor seating to accommodate our pup. Also, if you ask for takeout boxes, they bring you paper plates and aluminum foil. This restaurant was refreshing to try out for the first time. The food was flavorful and different. I enjoyed the Alana's combo for my first order here, it's your typical breaky set up of carbs and protein. I was really thankful that they had non pork options for protein. The chicken apple sausage was very nice, did not taste artificial or too salty. The difference in this place would be the environment, service and "carb" option. The roasted potatoes they serve with their breakfast isn't your normal plain potatoes, they season them very well and crisped just right. The atmosphere gave me Gilmore Girl vibes, very cozy and super cute. There is seating outside and inside... If it's blazing hot, outside would be best. The foot traffic here is not as bad compared to the other places on the Avenue. I think this allows the servers to be very attentive and interactive with all their customers. They have options for bread, scones and I believe a coffee cake? It may differ per day but that was different to be offered those choices. Everyone there was super friendly and accommodating and although it was very busy, they immediately cleared a table that was accessible near the front door. In Burlingame tthis past weekend to spend time with family. It was around brunch time and decided to stop at Alana's. We didn't have to wait long for a table. Most must've wanted outdoor tables since it was such a nice day. We opted to sit inside as it was available. Our waitress was very friendly and checked on us often. Water came straight away. We ordered: 1) Swedish oatmeal pancakes - mom shared these with us. Good sized pancakes. Thought they were sweet enough without needing to use the syrup. Also really liked the texture of the pancakes. Yummy! 2) Can't remember which omelette dad ordered but he liked them. Mom was excited because there was a choice between toast or coffee cake. She really wanted to try the coffee cake as well as the pancakes, and this way she got to try both. She was happy. 3) Chicken salad sandwich - kiddo liked her sandwich and the side of Mac salad that came with it. 4) Quiche w/ green salad - two options during our visit and I decided on the bacon and onion one. First of all, the quiche slice was pretty big. Moist and not dry at all. Also very flavorful. Chose the poppy seed dressing to go with my salad. I miss Alana's cafe when they used to have the house in Redwood City. Itwas one of my favorite places to come to visit on a weekend for brunch. I had to drop someone off at the airport and decided why not, I hadn't visited the Burlingame location before so I decided to pay this place a visit. We got there shortly after 9 a.m. on a rainy weekend and was seated immediately at a two top. Our server asked me as I sat down if I wanted coffee which I replied yes, please. She gave a us a few minutes to go over the menu and also told me about the special of the day Chilaquiles w/ Chorizo. I am always in the mood for Chilaquiles. I ordered that, my son ordered the Mediterranean Omelet w/ Chicken Sausage, and we got a stack of the Swedish pancakes to share. The food came out shortly after. I love their delicious scones, which vary from weekend to weekend. On this day they had a Fig Almond scone, which I had to try. It tasted wonderful. The ambiance was very busy with alot of servers walking around making sure everyone had coffee or water and were satisfied with their dishes. Was doing some shopping with my mother in downtown Burlingame. We became hungry and decided to try this restaurant. They do have some outdoor seating but it was a little cool out on this particular Saturday. They had available seating at the counter, this is where we sat. I ordered the Mediterranean Tuna sandwich. This is not something I would normally order but they had me at capers & olives, I love green olives ( and capers) in sandwiches so I decided to give it a go. The sandwich was very flavorful and the bread was toasted just right and not overbearing. This also came with side of pasta salad. I didn't expect much but I was pleasantly surprised. The bow tie pasta was very flavorful and included fresh tomatoes. My mom had the Chinese chicken salad, she said it was good. I didn't think she was going to finish the salad but she did! Great gem of a breakfast spot about 10 minutes away from SFO. We stopped after flying in and had a feast. So delicious! There is indoor and outdoor seating, the patio has a lot of tree and umbrella shade so it's not too hot. I didn't see many kids or dogs out but it was a weekday morning. We had 4 very different and very excellent plates. 1- oatmeal pancakes- we shared a plate for 3 people which worked out to 1 pancake per person. It was amazing! The oatmeal adds a nuttiness that compliments the lingonberries so well. Big hit, would order again. Seriously, I'm considering putting oats in my home pancake recipe now. 2- the quiche of the day- there were two options, one with meat and one vegetarian, I picked the veg and it was amazing. A good quiche is hard to find and this certainly lived up to the Yelp hype for me. The cheese was meaty, creamy, gooey, and amazing. The veg content was good, not too much or too little. Eggs so fluffy and the crust was crisp but not hard, and the perfect thickness (on the thinner side). You can apparently order a whole quiche a day in advance and let me tell you if I lived near here I would do that for any brunch party for the rest of my life. 3- the huevos rancheros - really great salsa, crispy but not dry or hard potatoes, eggs on the harder than softer side. Also with guacamole and refried beans, very hearty and filling! 4- Thai beef salad. The peanut sauce!!! The stuff of dreams. It was tangy, sweet, and nutty. The salad had carrots, cucumber, and a lot of leaves. Very good size. The beef was tasty, a little on the dry side but very good all the same. Also had a side of sour dough because when you're in SF area you MUST eat sour dough. This prompted a lot of googling about why SF sour dough is better, the short answer is they have a different bacteria population that makes it more tangy and anyway this bread was tangy and delicious!!!!! Service was quick and attentive. My water was never empty for long and I go through a lot in a meal. We had frequent check ins and lots of coffee refills. Really great service. Such a great spot! I can't wait to come back the next time I'm in the area. Of note, it felt like a steal for this quality of breakfast in the Bay Area, cost per plate ranged from about $13-20.
