This place is a small little bar restaurant that's just around the corner as soon as you get off the ferry. And today it was the only place open for eating and drinking because it was early in the season and the other places were just fixing up and prepping up for opening day. When we walked in the place it was a little crowded because it was the only place open and the bartender Rob was also the waiter and the cook but he sure kept the ball all rolling. The only thing I didn't see him do was washing the dishes, lol. One of the first restaurants you see once you get off the ferry at Ocean Beach on fire island, which is so convenient and one of the only places that has a warm lobster roll. Seriously, why do restaurants mostly serve cold lobster rolls?? Anyway, we got everything to go... the lobster roll was decent, definitely not the best, but fine for the price and lots of lobster meat. My hubby got the blackened mahi mahi sandwich and to say it was salty is an extreme understatement. We often share food because I love to try a variety of stuff and I took one bite of his sandwich and was done. Not even a bit enjoyable. Out of the many expensive restaurants in ocean beach this has to be one of the best ones I have visited so far. The French fries were very good and there honey mustard sauce definitely made the fries even more enjoyable. I ordered a drink, the waitress asked for my partner's id (remember this), she said I'll be back, comes back out and said I cannot give you back your ID because it's fake. My. Partner. Is. A. Whole. Thirty. Years. Old. She refused to give it back bc she had a "feeling" it was fake. Then asked for a second form of id from him. He never ordered a drink. I went inside after he gave her his global entry. This is what I see - 2 pretentious girls in a dark corner comparing 2 forms of government issued identification without a scanner of any sort. She said "it's better to be safe than sorry." So she based this purely on opinion. Again, he never ordered a drink, had a mask on (she said the id that was issued 10 yrs ago didn't look like him). I had to call an officer to get the id's back... She says she never said she wasn't giving us the ids back which is the first thing she said when she came back to the table "I can't give back your id bc it's fake and that's bar policy." Also a lie, under bar training in the US it is illegal to keep any govt issued identification. Anyways why would I EVER call the police if I could've gotten my id from the get go? I would've just left. I totally understand servers having a bad day or not giving the best services at all points in their careers (I've been in the industry), but to have to call law enforcement to get back our federal issued IDs is a serious crime (esp global entry) and just not something I never want to go through again in my life. Something was fishy from the start bc I was sat at the same time as another table and right before I ordered they brought out rounds to old middle aged white people without requesting any form of ID. There's like 5 other dark sports bars on the island that all serve the same thing. Maguires had great service and decent food - take your business there. This is a restaurant bar that we also stepped in for a beer while waiting for the Ferry. CJ's Restaurant & Bar serves food and has a full bar. But we were not there for any food. We did not stay long since they had Flat Screen TV's that were pleasing the customers with general TV shows instead of the Yankee game. So one drink and off we went to the next bar. Little dive bar with outdoor seating that seems like it's open pretty much year round which worked great for us coming out to the island on the off season. Nothing on tap but plenty of bottled options, and their famous pina colada style drink Rocket Fuel was delicious and strong! I wish I could rate this place 0 stars if I could. I am a New Jersey resident who is visiting some college friends in Long Island. My friend decided to take us to Fire Island to bar hop/beach for the day. For reference, we are all 22 years old. After going to multiple other bars with no issues, we decided to go into CJ's. The bartender, Amy, told me that she will not serve me because my ID is fake, which is not true. I told her that I am 22 and it is my real license and she responded by saying, "I know you're 22 but this ID is fake, I will give it back to you but it is not real. You can get the police if you want." My friend, who had already been served, jumped off her chair to do just that. The police said they could not do anything because they are not allowed to scan ID's. Don't you think a bartender on the island would know that already? Then, while my friend was outside talking to the police, Amy kept coming over to me and explaining how she knew my ID was fake. She told me that it was yellow, and no ID in the United States is yellow, which is not true. If you google a picture of a NJ ID you can CLEARLY see the yellow design. NJ is one state over, how does a bartender not know this??? I offered her other forms of identification and she refused to look at them. After my friend came back from talking to the cops, Amy refused to even look at us. My friends finished their drinks and we left the bar. Just a funny side note- when we talked to some other cops and told them what happened they said "Ew, why would you go to CJ's? Go to Sand Bar!" If you are from New Jersey and are over 21 go have fun at Sand Bar, don't bother dealing with CJ's. My friend, a local, will NEVER go back there! read more

I didn't expect much coming into this place. Of course, it is pricey like most places by any beach area. This is a typical American restaurant with burgers, seafood/lobster options, etc. I specifically had the Coney Island burger. It wasn't too bad. The buns were like NYC pretzels from the stands except smaller. The burger had the meat and hot dog inside with nacho cheese. Overall, nice combo! It is served with fries. Served with a toasted(but burnt black) roll. Not busy at 2PM but too busy for the bar tender to have limes for Gin and Tonics. BLT wrap was very good. Another sandwich had a Small portion of paper thin chicken on grilled chicken sandwich. Star of the show were crispy, hot fries both sweet potato and regular. Featured cocktail is Rocket Fuel. This is the second time I've been to CJ's for lunch on Fire Island. My girlfriend and I each ordered wraps, Grilled Chicken Caesar wrap and I got a Turkey Club. Both were fresh and very good. Service was great again, our server was very attentive to our table. Didn't have to ask for our water to be refilled or if we wanted another drink. (Obviously we had some Rocket Fuels, if you never had one, GET ONE) Later that day after the beach / showering for dinner, we stopped at CJ's again for Happy Hour. Before my visit to Fire Island a few friends told me I must try the islands drink Rocket Fuel. Since this is the place that invented we decided to come here to see what all the hype was about. I didn't try any of the food just came to have this drink. We got a high table by the bar and walked to the bar to order our drinks. The Rocket Fuel is pretty much a piña colada with Bacardi 151. The drink was good and very strong which I enjoyed. This place threw me off a little since it has a very mix décor. half of it is juts like a pub and the other trendy restaurant. I think this place is more of a bar by their drinks and music so maybe they should stick to that theme. read more

Took my college friends who are all 22 to fire island for a fun day trip. We started bar hopping and had no problems with our IDs until cjs. The bartender said my friend's New Jersey ID was fake. We tried to explain that she is 22 and this is a real ID but her response was "I believe you that your 22 but this is a fake ID". She continued to say that if I wanted to I can go get the police, so that's just what I did. The police said they can not do anything or even scan her ID, don't you think a bartender who probably lives on fire island would already know that? While I was dealing with the police she kept explaining to my friends why it was fake and refused to let my friend show any other identification. After I came back she seemed to stay nicely far away from us until we left. So if anyone with a New Jersey ID finds themselves at cjs stay clear of the bartender Amy. read more

I visited this restaurant this past Saturday w/ friends. (There were about 11 of us). The ambiance is nice, the seating was chic. There is not enough space to maneuver from one side to the other of the bar unless no one is standing/sitting around the hump of the bar. It's much easier to go around by leaving the venue and re-entering the other set of doors. The food was delicious, everyone enjoyed and I heard no complaints. I got the fish and chips while others got the skirt steak or burger or a salad. I, personally, did not feel good after returning home. I got the chills and puked up dinner for a good 2 hours. The fish tasted fresh except for one small part was more fishy than the rest of it, but nothing was putrid. The rocket fuel was a hip drink. We asked what the happy hour / half off specials were on drinks. Our server said that it was everything on the triangular plastic thingy on the tables. We were led to believe that Rocket Fuel was included in the deal, but when we got the tab, it was fuller than full price! They charged us $14.00 when it was listed as $12.00 and we were under the impression that it was $6.00 per round. The manager came out and greeted us which was kind. He was very cheerful. Bathrooms were decent. They're both unisex = faster people flow. They look small from where you're waiting, but when you go in, they're quite spacious. Music was the best. They had been playing a lot of 90's music, which we all reminisced in. They had large screen TV's around, and because of the horse races, they blasted the volume when it was peak in the race for the clientele who were interested in it. But they forgot to turn it down and we had to send someone to the bar to have it muted. We could barely speak over the sounds from the loud music and the TV. We had asked our waitress 3x but apparently she forgot 3x. ---- Later on, in the evening around 10PM CJ's transformed into a night club playing Latina music. It was hopping. read more

We went for lunch before catching the ferry home. There were only several tables and it took over an hour to get our meal. When the meal finally came, I had ordered regular fries while someone else ordered sweet potato fries. The other meals came out first and the person who got the regular fries had already eaten most of his. The waitress came out and noted that they made a mistake and she would bring a plate so I can scoop off the other member's fries onto my plate. I am pregnant and not sharing food off other's plates. I kindly explained this and asked, since it was their mistake, can I just have the plain fries on the side. She said the owner will say I have to pay for them. I was very surprised about this as it was their error, and she spoke to the owner who said if I want the plain fries I ordered, despite his error, I need to pay for them. I was happily willing to send back the mistaken fries which they wouldn't take. During the time we were there, he also came and yelled loudly at the bartender. To top it off, the burger was disgusting. I'd recommend any other place over this because of the quality of food, but even more, the horrible customer service and nasty attitude of the wonder. It takes a lot for me to write a bad review, but kindness goes a long way, even more than the caliber of food. Side note: waitress was lovely AND kind. I just came here five minutes ago to get drinks and food. I watched my sister ask if there was happy hour special. The bartender wearing white and a bandana responded "if you want happy hour, get the fuck out of here" she got extremely upset. Would have like to have tried the Yoo-hoo martini, but the blonde bartender (only one on staff) didn't seem to notice there were a bunch of people trying to order drinks. The young guy bar backing seemed confused too. Also there was no host or hostess on staff and awful music blasting made the whole experience worse. After waiting to be acknowledged for 10 minutes to no avail, my party of four took our business elsewhere. The girl was making drinks terribly slowly also. Maybe she had been working alone all day because her boss is cheap and didn't want to pay another bartender to work Saturday. This is why I do not feel bad for the bars and restaurants going out of business- it's not "unemployment" that's keeping people from working for you. Fire island is an affluent vacation spot and many bartenders would love to work there for the summer season. CJ's is a great no frills bar and restaurant a short walk from the Ocean Beach ferry. The 10 oz burger with sweet potato fries is delicious and large enough for a shared lunch. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is beachy casual. Be prepared for classic rock playing constantly (great quality speakers too) and a fairly loud crowd at the bar anytime of the day. Great happy hour beer specials. I had the island's signature drink, the Rocket Fuel, and frankly it's not much different than any other tiki bar's frozen pina colada, and at $14, I'll opt for the beer next time. read more

Ummm can you give 0 stars??? What a horrible place to eat. We arrived just as they took out the dinner menus which stated it was pasta night. Ok we'll - not what we wanted but dealt with it. Since I had my 2 kids with me they said there was no kids menu but we could get them anything but the steak sandwich. I then asked for chicken fingers and they said they ran out. Ok. Then a burger and that was non problem but it could only be ordered for the kids? I was forced to order the pasta specials. We had the pasta with bolognese sauce, and pasta chicken pomodoro. The chicken was a thick fatty slab and the bolognese was more like sloppy joes both were very spicy!!! Needless to say - it sucked and the staff was very awkward. BF & I visited Fire Island this past weekend for the first time as daytrippers for my birthday; we docked at Sailor's Haven around 9 AM and walked down the beach to Ocean Beach later in the day. After a morning in the Sunken Forest and on the sand, the town of OB was a charming (though crowded) change. We vaguely planned to eat somewhere in town and wandered until we found somewhere that caught our eye. At 3 in the afternoon on a Saturday, CJ's was pleasantly airy with a lot of people at the bar and a lot of empty tables--we were looking for somewhere classy but chill, which is precisely how I would describe the atmosphere. We were seated by the window, which I loved, and our server, Jon, was immediately attentive and warm. Ordered the famous "Rocket Fuel," which (having tasted nowhere else) was delicious and well-priced. For food, I ordered the lobster roll lunch special and BF had the fish and chips. Both plates were served with fries, and everything was so good that we were eating off each other's plates. I felt compelled to write a review after reading all the negative! This was a great place on a great day. I would not hesitate to return the next time I'm in Ocean Beach. read more
