I used to really love this place but my last visit was hugely disappointing. Really seems like the quality of the steaks has plummeted but the prices don't reflect that. If you're charging $40-$50 for a steak, it should be better quality than I can get at HEB, right? And I ordered rare and it came medium. The service was good otherwise and the wine was great but the decor hasn't been updated since at least the 90s. Not surprising that on a Saturday night it was half empty. ALC is a special place. It's an piece of Austin that hasn't changed into something you don't recognize and somewhere you want to avoid. Instead, it's a place you look forward to visiting, in a group, with a friend or late night style to sit and have a steak salad and a luscious glass of wine. They have hands down the best steaks in Austin. They are so yummy. They go down like butter, they are tasty and juicy as can be. When you cut into them there's an ease to breaking the meat with a knife that I've never experienced with a steak anywhere else. They dedicate their best efforts into making their steaks stand out and I crave it. This is also the kind of place that has management standing by at all times. We dined here on a Monday evening right when it opened so we received good and quick service. There is limited parking and can be difficult to find if you are driving from up north on Lamar. We ordered the buffalo lamb chops and they were OK. I didn't order them for the table, but it wouldn't be my top of my list to order either. I decided on the top sirloin and others chose the bone and rib eye. The steak came out medium rare which is good. I also added the sauteed brussel sprouts which had a light kick to it, which was nice. I wish I added another side since I was hungry after. I tried a bite of the asparagus with chimichurri sauce but it tasted very bland. The top sirloin was decent. It had a nice flavor and since I don't like adding sauces to my steak, it was nicely done by itself. I did not like the ribe eye. I found it very dry and chewy. Okay- the bottom line was that I could have chosen any restaurant in Austin for my 30th birthday and I happened to choose ALC Steaks because not only did my local (ATX born) peeps recommend it but it has always made the top lists of the best steaks in Austin. Call me cliche, but I eat steak every year for my bday and I don't stray from tradition. I am not an original Austenite, I was born and raised in Delaware so I am very familiar with steaks from Philadelphia and New York City. I must say that nothing disappointed at ALC and it definitely made the list of one of the best steaks I've ever had. The quality of the meat alone and the way it was cooked was absolute perfection. There was not one piece of grizzle or tough meat on any piece of our steak. The grilled shrimp and lump crab meat were outstanding quality and fresh. Not to mention the roasted garlic steak sauce was so amazing to us that we put it on almost everything we had and wanted to lick the plate (they should bottle this). And the complimentary bundt cake was phenomenal. The service was great and we appreciate that we were secluded making it seem more private for my birthday dinner. Without any knowledge, we booked a table for my 60th birthday for six of our friends. We had a great time. The service was stellar- a friendly fellow named Michael was our waiter and Austin advisor on music venues. Great steaks and prime rib cooked perfectly. A good wine list with reasonable pricing and selections from good quality California producers as well as Barolo and Montepulciano from Italy and Riojas from Spain matching the high quality beef. I go to the Truck that's downtown every other Tuesday... it's so good! I almost always get the quinoa salad with steak. Their quinoa said is surprisingly good and healthy for a steak truck. Their shrimp is also really good. I'd get there early, if you can, to skip the line (even though they're surprisingly fast) and make sure they don't run out. They cook the steak medium rare unless you ask otherwise, but they won't ask you how you want it done. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for 10 years and finally got around to trying it for a friend's bday dinner. Hello, complimentary birthday dessert! The location on Lamar near House Park is very Old-Austin to me. An unassuming building on the outside, dark and sexy on the inside. The service was truly fantastic, an institution that has been around this long can certainly attract some top talent. The steaks are some of the best in town, I loved my ribeye and the birthday boy loved his NY strip. They're known for their dipping sauces which are a bit gimmicky and perhaps completely unnecessary since the steaks are so good. Imagine having a bite of the most mouth watering, flavorful, smooth textured piece of meat melt on the tip of your tongue. This is exactly how the filet mignon tasted, the seasoning was incredible and the taste was sensational. It came with your choice of sides. I chose the garlic mashed potatoes which had the right amount of garlic and hint of salt and pepper. The only reason it received 4 stars was that during our time, as I took my last bite, the server came and scooped up the plate before my fork was empty. This happened To my colleague as well. I had the steak frites for lunch the other day with both the chimichurri and jalapeno horseradish sauce. The fries were nothing unique, but were very good and even better dipped into the sauces, and they stayed crispy throughout the meal. The steak was rubbed and seasoned nicely and had good flavor but they aren't using super premium cuts here as there were definitely quite a few gristly and chewy bites. It was cooked to a nice medium though and had plenty of pink inside so at least it wasn't super overcooked and the serving size was decent. The Chimichurri sauce had a lot of herby bright flavor and was heavier on the oil than vinegar. The jalapeno horseradish sauce was creamy and not overly spicy and was really good as well. I had an arnie palmer (lemonade tea mix) and that was tangy and good as well. All in all, I enjoyed the meal and would eat here again, even though it made for a bit of an expensive trailer lunch at almost $15. read more

First of all, ask your waiter/waitress to recommend a bottle of wine. They are most likely drinkers, and will know what they are talking about. We got a red called Sterling I think. It was only $40 and super delish. It complimented our meal perfectly. Start with the escargot. Let me say that again. Start with the escargot. It's six little tasty snails soaking SOAKING in delicious garlic butter. After you eat your snails, do not let them take the dish away. Dip your bread in that shit and keep eating! I had the 7-8oz Filet Mignon, medium rare. They brought it out medium rare. Deliciously warm and pink all throughout the middle. BONUS TIP: get the gorgonzola butter on the side. IT IS RIDICULOUS! It makes your steak even meltier and tasty than it already was. Add a loaded baked potato and some perfectly steamed veggies and BOOM! You can't even eat all that food. Especially after that bottle of wine. Man, you will feel good after this dinner. I only wish that I hadn't been too full to get the creme brulee for dessert. Next time, AL&C. Wow. This is so not what I was expecting. I'm not sure what I was expecting. Okay, fine, I do. I had that *other* restaurant in mind with a very similar name. And this place is in a strip mall. It'll be fine. Yes, I'll meet you guys there. I was the first of a large group to get there. First of all, it was much darker inside that I had anticipated. My eyes quickly adjusted and I was almost in awe of the decor. Dude, this is like a fancy place. Or something. I hear "Land and Cattle" and think of cowpokes and big huge steaks and baked potatoes. Just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover...or its name. I actually waited quite awhile before the rest of the gang came along, but the server still treated me like the full party was there. He let me sip my tea and read my book and checked on me periodically. When the rest of the gang got there, I ended up sharing the spinach salad and also sharing the pasta with lobster. For apps we had fried mushrooms and the grilled chilis with goat cheese. The apps were all delicious. We all shared a delicious raspberry tart for dessert. VERY tasty! Only in Austin do you have scary life-size posters of John Wayne next to artsy paintings with abstract things like misshapen trees and people in business attire next to people in shorts and boat shoes. The food was awesome. It takes a lot for me to be impressed by a steakhouse, but ALC did the job. I will walk you through my hopes, dreams, and thoughts... but for the sake of time, I will just walk you through my thoughts... about the food, specifically. The rolls were crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and nice and hot. A great start to the meal they were. Next, the buffalo lamb chops were jammin',. The flavor profile was simple, but different. The fried chops were juicy and savory, and the hot sauce paired perfect with the mild blue cheese. Who would have thought to turn a total drunk food style of cooking into a refined lollipop? Slightly disappointing, the New Mexican Green Chiles were filled with cheese.... and that is it. The zippy chiles had some goat cheese stuffing and nothing else. Unique, but boring. Ah... the steak. Actually, the steak was pretty mediocre. It was a bit underseasoned, but at least fairly tender. What I really enjoyed was the sauces. Each one was delicious. Sure it was $10 for a few little spoonfuls of sauce, but that $10 was well spent. The roasted garlic was rich and smooth. The Maker's mark had a nice kick to it. The Bearnaise was great for artery-clogging. The house steak sauce was tangy. I could have easily put this stuff on anything. In fact, I put it on my smooth and fluffy mashed potatoes, sweet carrots, and sauteed spinach. Alas, a feast fit for kings... how much will it cost you? Wow. This was my first meal at ALC and wow. We decided to go on a whim. We arrived at about 7:30 on a Thursday night, which might be why we had no wait. I ordered a Belvedere Dirty Martini and I swear, it was hands down the best martini I've ever had. Ice cold, six olives, perfect. Not too much vermouth, but just enough to make it really smooth. We started with the Shiner Bock Mushrooms which were piping hot. Our waiter told us that we should, "cut and blow". After I recovered from my 12-year old boy-like laughing fit, I did just what he said and yum! Crunchy, salty and a little spicy (due to the dip). Nice. I had a rib eye cooked rare and it was amazing. Normally, I only order prime rib when at a steak house because seriously, I cook the absolute best rib eye in the world so I don't want to be disappointed. However, I knew ALC had a great reputation and I prefer a fattier cut of meat, so I went for it. I was NOT disappointed. Honestly, it wasn't as good as mine, but the closest I think I'll ever get. The meat was tender, and still really red in the middle with very melty fat (a hard balance to reach). The sides were sauteed spinach with garlic, a caramelized julienned carrot, and garlic mashed potatoes. I wasn't in love the potatoes (a little dry for me), but loved the rest. My friend had the Ahi-Tuna, medium rare, and it came out perfectly cooked. It was still red but without the slightest bit of overcooking and very well seasoned. We passed on dessert because we were too full, but man, that was a great meal. There were a couple of detractors though. One? The really cute guy across from us had on no wedding ring when we first spotted him. He spotted my friend and by the end of the meal, low-and-behold, sported a ring on that left ring finger. Klassy. Also? My friend's boyfriend came in wearing a pair of awesome Madras shorts with a blue ringer t-shirt and constantly checked his blackberry which he kept on the table all night. I've eaten here a couple times before (years ago), and I remember it being a decent steakhouse on my other visits. Probably a 3.5-4 star rating IMO. Good quality cuts of beef, nice selection of sides, and competent waitstaff. Oh how the mighty have fallen. My brother picked out this place for a semi-fancy Father's Day dinner for the old man. Dad was confused at first and thought we were going to a Texas Land and Cattle chain. Little did we know that TLC was probably a better choice. Walking into ALC and trying to a find your seat when there's still daylight outside is an adventure in itself. After you stumble around in near darkness, your eyes will finally adjust to reveal that you are not in the Batcave but sitting inside a restaurant! What's with the ultra-dim lighting? Not all of us can find our food via echo-location. * The jalapeno calamari led off -- deep fried in tasteless batter with some lukewarm fried onion ring pieces and jalapenos mixed in. The honey mustard and marinara sauces didn't help either. Big skip. * Now batting, overpriced wine! Hooray for 400% markup on a cheap bottle of Cabernet! At least they couldn't screw this one up. * And the cleanup hitter! My 10oz New York strip that I asked to be cooked medium was more medium well to well done. The guys who ordered rare rib eyes also had theirs a bit overcooked a notch to medium rare. The carrots and spinach sides were ok. Kinda sad that I enjoyed the baked potato the most out of everything on the plate. The food wasn't necessarily that bad, but for the price I expected much much more. The biggest disappointment of the evening was with our "service". One of our side dish substitutions wasn't filled, 3 out of 5 entrees served to the wrong person, water filled once -- in fact, the guy only briefly showed up once after our entrees arrived (20 seconds later). It wasn't even that busy. He seemed more concerned with fetching drinks from the bar and disappearing for long periods. Our dude was inattentive, slow, and hard of hearing (not very bat-like at all). That's right, beardy -- I'm talking about you. I guess he didn't have to give a damn since it was an automatic 18% gratuity on parties of five or more. Total BS. The table next to us also voiced their complaints (different waiter too). I'm hoping this less than stellar visit was a fluke. Yes, I made reservations over a month ago. First time in a few years we were able to go out on Valentine's day. After the hour drive in traffic I was ready to unwind and enjoy a great meal. ALC was definitely the right choice. I gained 10 lbs tonight and I don't won't regret one single lb (until tomorrow morning). There was no wait for our table and the dining experience began a few minutes after we walked in the door. He started with a Shiner Beer and I started with a Moscow Mule (WOW - love the ginger in the drink). We moved on to Seared Ahi Tuna (made so perfect it just melted in my mouth) followed by a Caesar salad. Next up. He had the 16oz strip and I went with the 10oz sirloin and 7oz lobster tail. Everything was cooked to perfection. The side veggies (spinach and carrots- not mixed together) were cooked just right. As if we weren't ready to be rolled out of the place in a wheel barrel - we opt'd to share a Texas Pecan Tart. This was one of the most amazing pecan pies/tarts I have ever dissolved in my mouth. It's truly a Texas sized tart (more like a mini pie). To top it all off - the service was excellent! Now I must figure out how to roll myself into bed and drop into a food coma. read more

When I was a kid I found a bunch of colorful fabric scraps, shoved them into a glass bottle, filled it with water and called it art. And I would have never remembered that if I hadn't gone to Austin Land and Cattle. The Interior was almost Old Mission style, but the artwork was....uh...framed mosaics of fabric scraps. I was ahead of my time. Our fillets were perfect as were the accompanying veggies and steak fries. $40 for a 16oz fillet is a lot in principle, but there was nothing else that we could complain about. The meat was very flavorful and the texture was perfect. Their in-house cutting and ageing techniques perfectly achieved the most tender and tasty fillet I've ever had. The sauce offerings were "take it or leave it". We tried two, the Bearnaise and the Maker's just for kicks, but they were totally superfluous (not bad, mind you) and I wouldn't recommend wasting your $6 unless you feel a need to go euro. Carrots were buttery and sweet. Greens were not bitter and the steak fries were tender and had some nice flavor all their own. We arrived early with baby in tow. Little Gaby is now 7 months old and every meal is an adventure with her. We feel as though "the next meal out may be our last". We now feed her a solid meal as we eat and the peace is kept. We made sure to spill cereal and slobber all over the place but the waitstaff was very welcoming. The waitstaff should have had a bit more knowledge of the wine menu beyond being able to explain what is "flying off the shelves", but that's the only criticism I can levy on that front. After months of taking you through many Asian and seafood adventures, I was REALLY craving a steak and "land" delivered perfectly. This place was awesome! I was in Austin for SXSW when a group of co-workers and I went to this steakhouse on a recommendation. It was surprisingly dead for a Sat. night, so I was a little skeptical. Regardless, once the food came out, we were in heaven. The atmosphere is charming yet casual, the service always outstanding and the steaks--the best. I had a flavorful bone-in ribeye while cousins from NY opted for the NY strip (of course). All were perfectly cooked to order, sizzling hot and tender and delicious to the last bite. Topped off with tasty sides, a nice wine list and a good beer selection (displayed on an iPad), ALC has been my go-to spot for steaks for the 20 years I have called Austin home. Completely disappointed!! I will rate the steak as 4 (quite delicious), but service was 2.5. I've lived in Austin since 1998. I've seen this place next to the tavern and always wanted to go especially after reading reviews etc. But for some reason, I never stopped by, until this past weekend. A friend from out of town was visiting and wanted to eat steak. I suggested Perry's, but he did not want to dress up and go downtown, so off to Austin Land & Cattle we all went. I was excited. Years of thinking about this place.... And that's where it went down hill. You go in and you see a full bar right at the entrance. Yes, I love full bars. We sat down to order and I ordered one of my favorite drinks: a sazerac. This will tell me immediately if it is a full service bar. Nope, they cannot make a sazerac. I did have a black & tan though.... Next, our table of 5, asked about the steaks. If you are a waiter at a steak restaurant, you should KNOW something about the steaks you are selling. Perhaps our waiter was new, but he couldn't tell us anything and said he could get someone else. I would think they would train new-hires about their job first before putting them out as a waiter. Third and most important fail. I am specific about what type of steak I want. I want medium rare. Mmmmmm. My sister and brother in law wanted their steak "medium well." Not my idea of a good steak, but that's what they wanted. Well the COMPLETELY mixed the orders and my steak turned medium well, while their's was medium rare. Once you get a steak and take a bite and/or are prepared to eat and have to have it taken away to either be re-made or cooked more, it's game over. You've lost your appetite. My sister's steak was re-cooked, but incorrectly the second time. My new one came out RARE and not MEDIUM RARE. FAIL. However with that being said, the steak was good. Actually pretty darn good, but it was not as enjoyable as it could have been b/c of all the issues. The garlic sauce was good, but when I eat steak, I want to taste the flavor of the steak, so as such, used the sauce sparingly. I will also say that the carrots were DELICIOUS. They were so sweet. I have never tasted carrots THAT GOOD. We did mention it to the manager and he comped us our drinks. I was disappointed, but that won't mean I won't ever go back here. One word. Disappointed. I've eaten at ALOT of steakhouses in Austin and ALC is just not near the quality of most others. I had heard nothing but great things about this place so me and the bf were pretty excited to try it out for vday. Started out with oysters rockefeller which were overcooked. Then both had some ribeyes which were good but not great. Mine came out overcooked initially, had it sent back and got a perfectly cooked medium rare. However, it was not as flavorful as a ribeye should be. All I can say is that if your going to spend $40 on a steak, go to Perrys, Flemings, or III forks. ALC just doesnt not compare. Also, I have to say the service was not that great either. Actually had a waitress come and call out food to us that was for another table. Y'know... eh. I came here for Steak & Blowj0b Day (Feb. 15) to treat my boyfriend to a yummy steak. He took me out to Ruth's Chris when he got his first paycheck at a new job, and three months after receiving my first paycheck I was finally returning the favor, and chose AL&C for the occasion. So, good things about AL&C: 1. Delicious steak. I don't think mine was cooked the way I wanted it; it was more on the rare side than medium-rare. But whatever. It was yummy. No need for sauce. 2. The veggies on the side were fantastic. There were steamed carrots that were so sweet and succulent I was gobbling them up. The spinach had garlic and something else that totally covered that bitter taste spinach gets when it's cooked. So, food? Good. The not-so-good: 1. Our waiter was pretty much MIA for most of it. He appeared to take our drink orders, then ran off. Fifteen minutes later, he took our food order, then someone else delivered our food. My date and I finished eating and waited for our waiter to come back so that I could order dessert. It took so long that we decided we'd be there for another hour finishing up dinner, so instead I put my credit card on the table as a hint for the check. The expo who'd brought us our food -- NOT our waiter -- spotted it and ran it for us. THEN our original waiter came back to whisk away our leftovers to box them and to bring us the credit card slip. In short: service could be better. If I'm gonna pay $30 for a steak, I want to be doted on. That kind of service I got at Ruth's Chris... I didn't get it at AL&C. 2. My in-laws were in town and we wanted a great Austin-esque dinner, frankly, I was disappointed. I thought that Austin Land and Cattle was supposed to be the best local steakhouse in Longhorn country... but I've had much better steaks in Austin for the same price. I ordered a Fillet and had it cooked Medium. It was cooked well but it seemed way too salty. All I could taste was salt. I was assaulted by another patron after he harrassed myself and my girlfriend. Jordan the manager essentially did nothing. They finally had to ask the other party to leave and they thought that was sufficient. They didn't even comp us a drink or desert. NOTHING. We called to talk to another manager "Katherine". They offered us $100 gift card (the first meal was almost $200). You cannot eat at this restaurant for $100. Why would I pay money for another meal at a place that helped ruin my anniversary dinner with my girlfriend. Once I mentioned YELP, Katherine (the manager) said they were really gonna comp the whole thing......then WHY tell us an hour earlier that we were only getting $100. Scared of YELP, Katherine? My dog who can barely talk could run a restaurant better. There are a dozen (at least) better steakhouses in Austin......I suggest finding them, unless you want to eat in an establishment that has no class. read more

So disappointed!!! I was craving a good steak and nice evening out with my family. We also try to do local as opposed the the chains when possible. While the ambiance is always great at ALC, last night might have literally put the fork in the place for me. The waiter was rude and less than patient. The green chili goat cheese appetizer was great. The drinks were good. When we ordered our steaks, the waiter was very dismissive of my daughter in law the entire evening. When she was ordering the sauce for her steak, after being called back because he started to walk off after 3 of the 4 of us ordered, he then interrupted her and completely ignored what she was saying. The food arrived. My husband and I ordered medium. My husband's steak was well done and the waiter took it back to redo it. Mine had a little pink but within a few minutes of eating it , it was more than well done. I should have sent it back but at that point .... I ate half the steak and my delicious baked potato and called it day. We had a great night with our kids but not because the $400+ dinner! And we don't do expensive meals like this often so when we do...we expect a lot! Will not be back anytime soon! read more

Crunchy and delicious on the outside, soft and buttery on the inside. That's not bread. That's steak! It feels both like a trendy Austin dive and a classy steakhouse at the same time. Hidden behind something (descriptive, right?), Austin Land and Cattle is almost at the corner of 12th and Lamar. The parking lot is a narrow one-way lot, so take the first spot you see, unless you wanna be doing an illegal U-ie back into the lot. The waiting area is nice but not obscenely large or packed beyond reason on a weekend. There are two small, tucked away party rooms which are always filled with muffled hooplah. The bread is nicely sized in case you have willpower, and deliciously plentiful and soft in case you don't. I will tell you this is a professional steakhouse and not Texas Land and Cattle, so order your steak no warmer than medium, or you'll miss part of the experience. If you follow that advice, you should get a nicely seasoned steak, with a thin, crispy, slightly burned layer that's filled with flavor. Beneath that layer is magic beef. It will magically turn from a juicy piece of steak to pure buttery glory in your mouth. If your taste buds aren't doing a happy dance at this point, you're either a vegetarian or you've burned yourself from eating too quickly again. It happens when the aroma just engulfs you like this. Excellent meal. I am typically disappointed by steakhouses because I have been to so many and always get a filet so there's not much room to be "wowed", but tonight's filet and ribeye (which I usually dislike) were as good or better than any other steak I can recall. My filet was easily the most tender I've had, not over-seasoned, no random chewy strand in the middle, and it came out appropriately rare but still warm enough on the outside. My wife's bone-in ribeye was by far and away the best example of marblization in a steak I've seen - great flavor dispersed throughout and not a bunch of thick fat to cut around. The service wasn't bad, but it was slow to arrive and hurried when they did; typical symptoms of what you would expect from an understaffed crew, but nothing offensive or negative. It was a busy Saturday night so I will give them the benefit of the doubt and not take off a star. Also, the price was in line with other steakhouses when you consider it comes with sides - spinach, carrots, and your choice of potato. Always hated how most steakhouses make you choose from a bunch of enormous sides which makes it hard to get a variety when you're not with a bunch of people. BTW - even though this is a nicer place, we were a party with 4 kids ages 1-6 and it wasn't awkward - the place is pretty loud with many out-of-the-way tables. read more

This is hands down the best steakhouse in Austin. No frills, just great steaks cooked to perfection, great martinis, and great service. Also, one of the best happy hours in town. Where else can you get a steak sampler that includes rib-eye, sirloin, and filet with a martini for $16? Hard to not like a place that gives you free steak, huh? That's exactly what Austin Land and Cattle Company did this week: gave away a steak sampler (small portions of fliet, ribeye and top sirloin) for nada. I'd driven by this nondescript building a billion times, so it was nice to finally step inside. ALC is nice (definitely more upscale than the similarly-named chain restaurants) but not too swanky to be comfortable. Our steaks were fantastic, of course. Also as part of the promotion we got discounted margaritas (light on the sweet, which I like, even if it is a trick to make them seem stronger), skinny French fries (YUM), sweet potato French fries (BIG YUM), and a cup of spicy sirloin soup. The only thing we paid regular price for were the New Mexican goat-cheese-stuffed chilies ($8). And the most expensive thing we had was the least satisfying. In all, a brilliant marketing idea and a nice dinner. But it may take another giveaway (or a better job) to get me back there; it would be nearly impossible for two to have dinner there for under a bill otherwise. read more

One of my goals when visiting Austin this summer was to eat a great steak. After all, that's one of the things that TX is known for, right? The concierge at our hotel recommended Austin Land & Cattle, because we prefer to eat at independent restaurants rather than chains, whenever we can. My rib-eye and my husband's NY strip were perfectly cooked at medium-rare. The sides were mediocre at best, however. Our loaded baked potatoes were somewhat dry and the pile of shredded cooked carrots and steamed spinach seemed like an after-thought. The crusty rolls were served with a butter that tasted slightly rancid. Good thing we ordered the Shiner battered mushrooms. They came in a huge pile to the table, hot and fresh, with an awesome chipotle sauce. Would we come here again, the next time we're in Austin? Not likely. Our experience didn't make AL&C a destination dining spot for us. read more

Yes, it was that easy of a choice to make because life rarely gets any better than this and especially for me because it all goes downhill from here. If I was on death row, ALC would be my last meal. Don't skimp on their great homemade cocktails because they can turn a dinner party into a dinner PARTAYYY. On my recent visit, I had the T-Bone because why should I, a free American, be restricted to just one cut of meat? The steaks are perfectly cooked and even when they aren't they will change that. A half eaten filet was entirely replaced because it was overcooked and even to the protests of my brother in law, they did it anyways. Your waiter will present you a variety of steak sauces but the Chimichurri and garlic sauces are decidedly the best. Had the fried mushrooms as an appetizer and I had to force myself from filling up on them because they were that good. "It was just alright for me dawg"... why do I always feel like an a-hole for giving a place 3 stars when nothing was wrong? I mean... it was GOOD. But it didn't knock my socks off. The steak I ordered was medium rare, the steak that showed up on my plate was medium rare so ya know, that's always a bonus. Mashed potatoes tasted like mashed potatoes. The waiter was friendly and courteous and the food came out in a timely manner. But it was just... aight. Perhaps I was expecting my meat to be meatier? I'm all about a $40 strip steak but this seemed more like something I'd get at the Outback, than a $40 steak from Ruth's Chris or Perry's. My husband got the fillet and it was kind of flat and squishy looking, not all thick and succulent like a fillet should be (or maybe I'm just a meat retard). I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but I wouldn't be bummed if I had to. read more

I really wanted to give Austin Land & Cattle a 4-star rating. It's local, organic, and they pay attention to their ingredients and methods. I wanted to glow about it , but I just can't. ALC dining history: I've been here 3 times-- once to try it out, and twice since for Valentine's Day. Last year's V-day menu featured a 16 oz. Chateaubriand that was just fantastic (though, really, how could you mess that up?) So I chose to go again this year and enjoy another 4-star experience. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out. The setting: Valentines Day (a Tuesday), 9:30 PM reservation The service: The hostess was very nice. Our server was friendly enough, but extremely casual. Her attitude made me feel like we were at Chuy's and we were her flip-flop wearing friends who'd come to visit and eat free chips. Both of our previous waiters had been very classy & professional, so this was a surprise. She was not helpful selecting a bottle of wine. She hadn't tried the majority of the wines I asked about, and when I told her I wanted a big, bold red, she recommended a weak-tasting Claret. Luckily, she did let me sample the Claret (because they sold it by the glass), so I was able to avoid that mistake. The wine I ended up ordering was still a shrinking violet compared to what I wanted. She also recommended an appetizer we hated and didn't notice our disappointment or ask how it was. Otherwise, service was fine. We would have loved her at Chuy's or some local diner. Not sure fine dining is her forte, though. Food: I'll give sub-heads for people who want to scroll past the starters... Scallop appetizer: Our waitress recommended the "giant" scallop appetizer, which the menu said was crusted with panko and sesame seeds. It was on the special menu and turned out be the biggest disappointment of the night. The scallops were small and overcooked. I've been seeing scallops twice as large in the Whole Foods fish case for weeks. Additionally, the scallops were not crusted with anything. We counted maybe 10 sesame seeds spread between the 3 scallops, and not a single panko bread crumb. I almost asked her if she brought the wrong scallop appetizer, but there was only one on the menu. They were dry & rubbery from overcooking, and they had an oily dipping sauce (sesame oil, I think), that didn't help very much. They were also bland. Asparagus: We ordered a side of asparagus because we love asparagus, and we were very disappointed. It's a hard vegetable to get wrong, yet... the tips were burned (charred), and parts of the stalk tasted like char. They were all very skinny and didn't taste like asparagus at all. The flavor was overwhelmed by the char flavor and by some sort of thin, sweet sauce or marinade that had been poured over them. Spinach, Carrots, potatoes: The sides that came with our steaks were really excellent- julienne carrots, fresh spinach, and potatoes (I had mashed potatoes, he had a baked/loaded). The spinach was cooked perfectly. The carrots were covered in butter (delicious) and tasted sweet and fresh, with just the right texture (not too mushy). STEAK: And that brings us to the main attraction- the main reason I eat out, and the best thing on any menu- the steaks. He had a ribeye; I had the 12 oz filet. He ordered his medium-rare, I ordered mine very rare. I have a habit of pointing to something very red to emphasize my point when i order a steak. It should be at least as red as a 5-star review. He was very pleased with his ribeye, though I thought it tasted a little too charred and a little bit like lighter fluid. It was good-quality meat, though. Both steaks were a little under-seasoned. I am a true steak lover, to the extent that I almost never order a steak with a sauce on top and I appreciate subtle seasoning. When I cook my own meat at home, I use only salt, pepper, and sometimes garlic powder. I never add salt to my food at the table. Yet, I still found these a little bland. My filet needed a little something extra to really make it sing, but it was still a good piece of meat, and it came out cooked correctly (and evenly). I finished most of it at the table, which is a feat for me, considering it was 12 oz. Next time, I think I will try a new place or just go back to my favorite - Sullivans. read more

Great steak for a great price. I ended up getting an 8oz filet and it comes with the sides. Most steak houses will charge you extra for family style sides, but not here. The restaurant was not too noisy with most tables filled. Our service was flawless. And the steak was cooked to order and it tasted really good. There was not one single negative thing about this place. Five stars for price versus food quality. I'll be returning next time i'm in town. read more
