I feel like I got ripped off because this place has such a high yelp rating yet the food that we tried was overall just fine. About six dishes two out of the six were good, the others passable. I'll start with the positive... I love a huge space. I feel like people could talk if they want to and a seat would be available. The downside to a huge space is because the restaurant was so large, because it was pretty empty. It seemed like a strange vibe, like a deserted amusement park. The two standouts were the crispy rice appetizer, which was very flavorful and had a great texture and I'm surprised to say it, but the burger was great. There was a sauce issue here. On the steak and the scallops there was a little bit of a heavier sauce and a little bit too much of it. Every time we see that I feel like it's covering up something. Our scallop orderer describe the scallops as the worst , good scallops he's had which fits for several categories of the establishment. The steak was also good but the sauce was heavy. My husband orders steaks at diners and at fine dining establishments, and he described the steak as fine, but he couldn't taste well it because of the heavy steak sauce. The burger was also very saucy, but I didn't mind that. I would appreciate it if Yelp had a label to specify if a restaurant is a hotel restaurant because I would've done some extra research had I known. Typically hotel restaurants are not my first choice. Our waiter was odd. A couple questions were asked, and the reaction he had was that the question was strange or hard to answer. I've never had the experience where I would felt judged on the way a question about the menu was phrased. Also service was a bit slow for a near empty place. Food was a three, experience was a one, rounding down to reset the overall rating of this place. While not the warmest greeting by the host, the rest of the experience at Alder & Ash was better. There were no tables in the dining area, and chose to sit the bar area instead. The seats are low and back far back. All of the food choices were great! We started with the four dip sampler, each were a winner. I chose the pork shoulder which came on a bed of orzo. Hostess was not super friendly, but waitress took care of us. This seems to be a popular happy hour spot, so I'm glad we had a reservation. Happy hour wine glasses and small plates are $10. We started with a plate of oysters which were so fresh and delicious. For our entrees we split a shrimp scampi and steak frites. I appreciate that they split the scampi into two small plates for us. The steak was tender and juicy. For dessert we had a salted caramel ice cream on a chocolate tart. The tart was hard to cut because it was so cold. But the flavors made up for it. Was there for lunch with a group and we took the room not far from the entrance. The main area looks like it's at least mid-sized. For food, I got the chowder to start. Typical New England style creamy chowder. Tastes decent, and the portion is actually fairly big. For mains, I got the ahi tuna poke bowl. It's actually a good sized bowl of sushi rice with seasoned tuna, avocado, edamame and other veggies. They had some jalapeno pepper in there to give the mixture some heat. I like it. Saw other people's entrees like the burger and club sandwich, and portions for those were big as well. Took some time for the food, probably because we were a large group. Overall a good meal. Service is interesting can't tell if they enjoy their job or just frustrated because a conference was in session our server was super unpleasant at first. But another server made a good recommendation because the drink on their cocktail were overly sweet and unbalanced. Ambiance is pretty modern meets classy. Comfortable and inviting. The restaurant is BEAUTIFUUUUUL - quite large with a full bar. Our server was fantastic and helpful. The food is also delicious and great amount of crab/fish. I came in the afternoon on a weekday so it wasn't busy. I believe there was pay to park street spots, but we walked from Pike, so definitely doable. Just a note: the restroom is outside of the restaurant. When you step out, you're actually at the Sheraton and there's a code to enter. read more

Had the opportunity to stop back in at Alder and Ash and I'm excited to say that they have a new chef whose food finally matches the quality of service. As always the vibe was great. This time we had the tuna tartare, scallops, salmon, bread pudding and a couple mocktails/cocktails. The tuna tartare was refreshing and I enjoyed the larger chunks of tuna contrasting with the crisp chips. The scallops and salmon items are newer interpretations by the chef, both flavorful and well cooked. I enjoyed the bread pudding at the end of the meal from the chocolate to the vanilla ice cream it all worked. Loved my happy hour experience here! I chose it because my friend and I were going to the paramount that evening for a show and this spot was around the corner. As soon as I arrived the hostess and bartenders were very welcoming and friendly. I quickly ordered some bites and a cocktail before the happy hour prices ended. Luckily the food came out quickly. I tried the veggie tempura, the fancy tots, and salmon fried rice. I really liked the salmon rice out of the apps I had. Then my friend and I split the pasta with bolognese. It did not disappoint!! An amazing place to unwind and recharge in the middle of downtown Seattle and literally right next to the convention center. Ambiance is spot on, you can't ask for a better lunch/dinner location that's clean, well-lit, comfortable and modern. Very relaxing and spacious with a dining room and a bar/lounge space. Food was also excellent - we went twice, once for lunch and another for dinner during the week we visited and got the Alder and Ash burger. The fries are perfectly crispy and the burger is tender and juicy. Top notch! Only drawback for us was their service. Don't get us wrong, the servers were very kind and friendly but it was really hard to overlook the lack of attention. We waited at the booth for 10 min before we greeted by anyone and eventually seated, despite it not being busy (in fact the lounge only had 1-2 other tables) and the server was mostly chatting away with another guest. We also struggled to get our waters refilled on both occasions we came. Finally, my husband ordered the brussels sprouts twice, our waitress acknowledged it, and then we never got it so we just let it go. Overall it was really really slow and felt unattentive. We came here for breakfast and we had to wait for 30 minutes because they didn't enough staff working. Due to the staffing issue, service was delayed when we were seated. However, after we ordered the food arrived pretty quickly. The portions are pretty good, the prices however, is a different story. They charge us 4% for surcharge due to blah blah blah cost, which I don't agree so I took it out the tip. If its necessary to add a surcharge, raise the prices. They have several $10 bar bites but my absolute favorite that I will sing from the rooftops about, is the Salmon Crispy Rice. It is SO good! And honestly, it's quite filling. Because I'm a glutton for it, I could seriously eat two plates but one plate alone does the job. The best way to describe my experience at Alder & Ash is, "A for effort." It's what I thought after my main course, and what my husband mentioned after leaving the restaurant too. We came here for Seattle Restaurant Week for my birthday. If I was solely judging the food, this wouldn't be a 5-star review--it was all the other things added up that pushes this review to 5 stars. I'll break it down: Service The hosted greeted us, noticed in the notes it was my birthday and acted so genuinely enthused to have us come for dinner. Our kind waiter, James, acknowledged it was my birthday and brought out 2 complimentary glasses of champagne. Wow! My dad, asked James if they carried "fresh squeezed lemonade." (A peculiar request, but something he always inquires about at restaurants, ever since I was a kid). While they didn't, my dad still ordered it anyway. And, a short while later, the bartender came out with freshly squeezed lemonade. They could've easily brought out whatever they had on hand, and it would've been fine. But, they really went the extra mile--the lemonade was delicious too. I was very touched by this gesture. Beverage temperature Nowadays, a lot of restaurants just serve room-temperature water. So, I was pleasantly surprised when the table water was chilled. And, all the other beverages--champagne, and beer were also cold. Portions/value The portions are huge. Since we were there during restaurant week, I thought that they may skimp on portions, but they didn't--it is a great value. If you're going during restaurant week with someone else, order different appetizers and desserts, as they're big enough to share. Food My parents really enjoyed their meals. I thought the food was pretty good. Although, I would skip the crispy rice next time--too thick, and the rice was gummy on the inside. Short ribs were pretty solid, but I would try something else next time. My favorite was the dessert. Unfortunately, the soft serve machine was down, but the other desserts that we ordered--profiteroles, mango sorbet, and raspberry sorbet were excellent. The sorbets were very refreshing. Wanted to come back for SRW after my fantastic experience at a yelp elite event. This time I was seated at one of the tables at the far back for lunch, and it had a very classy vibe and a decent amount of people were having business lunch or single patrons doing their phone meetings. It reminded me of the hidden bougie restaurant we had at my business school, where we took VIP guests. I love that Alder & Ash creates different vibes in different sections of their space and it's such a perfect space for a venue. The 2-item $20 course for SRW was a steal and had an extensive amount of choices, and I was able to try some of their signature items like a fish chowder and their painted hills beef burger. The staff and particularly our bartender was very attentive, good energy & rapport. He recommended the Nice Margarita and sold me when he said it had coconut. It was delicious. This delight of a gem had some of the best black cod I have ever eaten in my life! Sushi samba and nobu got nothing on Alder and Ash's black cod! It was buttery and flakey all while melting in your mouth. I also sampled their smoked old fashioned drink, but the smoke was a bit overpowering and bitter. The rest of the meal was delicious and would highly recommend going there for their outstanding seafood!! It was also a cute place for a date night or celebrating a birthday. We sat at the back of the bar lounge area....where it was comfy and quiet. Shortly after, our server stopped by to welcome us and to take our happy hour drinks order.....we did so, along with a couple of happy hour snacks to start. We ordered the Tempura Vegetables....which comes with a basil aioli dipping sauce, and the Great Northern Bean Hummus.....which came with a few slices slices of toasted sourdough. With these two snacks, we ordered a glass of red and white wines each. Ok, so, I know this place has only been opened for about 3 months, so there's still room for improvement. First of all, the tempura vegetables was just broccolini....that's it. Second, the batter used was so thick and so cakey, we had to remove most of it just to get to the broccolini. Third, it was quite greasy. This is definitely not "tempura" style. The hummus was not too bad....went nice with the sourdough, but we didn't finish it because we didn't want to fill up on bread before dinner. Unfortunately, the "Tempura Vegetables" was so disappointing , and the humus was just an ok "filler," that we decided not to stay here for our dinner. We just finished our drinks, paid the check, and left. We really think the happy hour menu has to be re-worked with food items that people actually like, and will go well with a happy hour drink. Unfortunately I didn't realize before my arrival that the restaurant was part of the Sheraton Hotel in Downtown. This combination (restaurant of the hotel) usually made me realize I don't like my experiences because of the type of clientele they serve and menu is typically small, with lots of fried food and/or not really good. Small selection with all dishes coming with fries. The best dish we had was the appetizer, ahi tuna tartar. Definitely worth to order. Main dish we ordered their stake dish that was not on the temperature we ask for (medium rare), it was over cooked and the mussels that were okay. ALL dishes come with fries. Maybe I didn't check well the menu but I can't recall to see other side options. I think what threw me off the most was when I ask for bread and they brought white sliced bread. I think how this restaurant is classified and rated the menu was so so and prices were high so I felt mislead. Our dinner was almost $200 and I think was over priced based in other experiences. This restaurant has also the 4% fee included on its bill (I feel robbed when I get that in my bill) that goes 100% to the restaurant not employers plus we add tip for the waiter and staff (which we were fine and happy to leave). read more
