Try the soup!!!! Alexander Michaels is a wonderful old school Charlotte spot. Think dimly lit bar room with fantastic soup and sandwiches. Service is friendly and prompt. I've heard the burger is very good. For me the soupS are the star here. They have the spicy crab bisque every day which I don't find to be very spicy just a mild bite with a good amount of crab. Today 2 colleagues and I all had the chicken noodle soup, (soup of the day) and it was the best chicken soup I've had outside of my mom's kitchen. Both colleagues loved the soup with one saying it was the best chicken noodle soup he ever had. The turkey sandwich was pretty simple but very good. As we raved to the server about the soup I'll repeat our suggestion, make that chicken soup an everyday thing or at least regular (Wednesdays perhaps) and I bet you will see some traffic especially during the winter! read more

Spicy crab soup was hot and delicious. I tasted a strong flavor of tomato in it though, but personally not a bad thing. Just must of been a tomato base soup. Ruben was one of the best I've tasted. Perfect amount of all ingredients. The 1/2 burger was a great size and filling. I got American cheese and bacon as my two add ons. They gave you a generous amount of bacon. You can add the soup to your meal or get it as your side. Atmosphere was very cool. Lots of history. It's said to be haunted, that's why we went on Friday the 13th. Check out the wood around the bottom of the bar! Our waiter was overly friendly but fine! He quickly got busy during the lunch rush, so he didn't have much time for extra conversation with customers. I was in Charlotte for work and a coworker suggested I give Alexander Michael's a try for dinner. I was alone so I chose to sit at the bar. I was quickly greeted with a smile by Natalie, the bartender. Natalie let me know their Wednesday special was buttermilk chicken which came with gravy, mashed potatoes and an additional side. She said it was very good, and popular. Man oh man she was not wrong. It was a taste explosion in my mouth. So flavorful and juicy! For desert I had the lemon blueberry cheesecake, goodness!! This long standing restaurant has been in the qc many many years and this is only my 2nd visit. I remember my first visit being just ok but the 4.5 star rating made me curious enough to return. They are located on a dead end street off of Graham. It's very dimly lit inside and the bar area is pretty large with lots of tv's. The staff was really nice and are very familiar with the menu to offer recommendations if needed. The food is still the same..........average......they have many pasta dishes, wings, salads, sandwiches, etc. I had the crab soup, which for the first time of me having tried this soup at many other restaurants, this restaurant had imitation crab in the soup....no words. I also ordered the 'what it is' pasta dish, which was very dry blackened chicken over cajun cream sauced rotini(and it's not fresh as the menu states)......so I would like to rename it 'what it was' which was definitely not worth $17. read more

Came here with a group of fellow dive bar/local spot enthusiasts and MAN it didn't disappoint. Literally every thing was good. Stroganoff, honey chicken, reuben, quesadillas, whatever we ordered it was good. Including the catfish. The "what it is" is probably the best thing I've tried here. Price is right, location is great to walk off the food or beer afterwards. Don't hesitate to head here - just don't go when I'm trying to get a table. read more

Alexander Michael's is like an old, trusty friend. No matter how long it is between visits, every time you're reunited, it's like no time has passed at all. We only make it to Al Mike's a few times a year because it's just so tucked into 4th Ward -- parking is tough, there is occasionally a wait, and quite frankly, we forget about it sometimes. When we're in the neighborhood though (usually for the 4th Ward home/garden tours), a visit is a must. Service is always laid back yet attentive. They don't mind if you linger but you never go without something you need -- mayo, another napkin, beer refill... The food is solid, too. My favorite appetizer is the potato skins. Their crab soup is to die for. And, I know it sounds weird after I just ticked off apps with bacon and seafood, but their vegetarian quinoa black bean burger is my go-to entree. Alexander Michael's is a steady .300 hitter with gap-to-gap power and a solid glove. Not the flashiest player, but after a number of seasons it's hard to ignore their consistent production. London Broil sounds boring, but luckily I had faith in my Yelp brethren. Along with the spicy crab soup, this is my go to order. They have tons of great entrees and pasta dishes, too. What a nice gem tucked into the beautiful Fourth Ward area. So much history still gleams the streets and the inner walls. AM has a sort of dimly lit seating area with a bar that stretches for most of the main seating area and is well decorated with historic woodwork and cabinetry. Not sure who Alexander Michael is but baby let me tell you he cracked the code ! The sweet tea tasted like old school McDonalds sweet tea so I knew it was about to be lit! The restaurant feels like a tavern, so it's a little dark inside, which is fine. We were seated at a small table near the back. It's not a huge restaurant but there was definitely enough space to feel comfortable. I ordered the What it is and my boyfriend ordered the honey chicken pasta (the two bestsellers). Both were delicious but the What it is is the BOMB ! The Cajun Alfredo sauce is to die for. The chicken on the honey chicken pasta was a little more grilled and the chicken on the What it is has more of a blackened coating. Both were really well seasoned so we didn't have to add any salt or pepper. My boyfriend and I were both pleasantly surprised and kept saying we couldn't wait to come back! read more

Came in to Charlotte on business and saw this getting consistently good reviews on Trip Advisor... So glad I stopped in! This place is overflowing with charm and character, and their drink selection is The waitress recommended the NoDa IPA and I'm so glad she did! So hoppy and bold; paired really well with the blackened fish I got and the crab soup, which is as good as everyone says it is! Blackened fish was *a hair* salty for me, but I've been watching a lot of chopped so maybe I'm being judgy. Went great with some beer tho! FYI the cook on the fish was phenomenal; as someone living in DFW I appreciate good fish when I can get it! TBH I would be just find having the NoDa IPA and the crab soup by itself though, both very comforting and filling. Yum! Decided to try and grab a table on Friday night for an early birthday dinner with my wife. We walked in at about 815 and were seated immediately. The service, food, and vibes were all outstanding. This is not a super fancy more of a pub vibe but it's really awesome that the restaurant is in a house type property. The food is pretty amazing. We both got pasta dishes and they were both equally delicious. Literally could not stop eating. We skipped desert as we were rushing out. I thoroughly enjoyed the service as well. I had someone bring me to AM about 13 years ago and have brought many colleagues here over the years. This is the first time I brought my wife here but I have told her many times about this hidden gem. We both started off with the crab soup which we both thoroughly enjoyed. For the main course she ordered the honey chicken over penne pasta and I ordered the meal called, "what it is" which was Cajun chicken over spiral pasta. Both meals were very tasty and different in flavor. Her meal had a savory and sweet taste and mine was a bit spicy and creamier. Both meals had a pile of Parmesan cheese to mix in the hot pasta and chicken. Also both meals were of ample portion size. We ended up taking about half of each main course home. The service was excellent and the waitress was very helpful suggesting the two main courses. This has always been one of my fav places and now it is one of her favorites as well. This restaurant is on a street where there are some beautiful houses we parked on the street. When we walked in we were greet by the friendly bartender that cleaned off a table for us very quickly which really impressed me. As soon as we were seated Kaylor our waitress came and got our drink orders. We arrived at 8:15pm and were done with drinks and dinner by 9:15pm it was fast service but we never felt rushed but the complete opposite. Kaylor gave us her honest opinion about the dishes we asked her about. Everything was delicious and you can tell it's their own recipes and that they took pride in making each dish. Top notch casual local watering hole in a part of Charlotte called "Fourth Ward." It is inside the 277 perimeter and not far from the skyscrapers of Uptown. In addition to a number of great local brews on tap, they have an excellent menu of bar grub that's better than most places. We came here last minute for lunch at the recommendation of my sister and it definitely did not disappoint! There was no wait and we got seated really quickly. The atmosphere inside was great, true irish pub with a wood bar, dim lights, and old pictures signs all around. The food was awesome as well, I got the London Broil and it was essentially a really good and tender cheese steak. The roll was super fresh and the steak fit really well with the cheese they used. My girlfriend got the Reuben and it was tender but the dijon mustard was a little overpowering. My mom got the Tuna salad plate and said it was good as well. Overall Alexander Michael's was really tasty and pretty affordable. We stopped in for a super casual dinner after flying back from a weekend trip, but you could do anything at this bar - business meetings, lunch with friends, romantic dinners tucked into a corner. Serving up all the bar classics with surprisingly good food too. We split the stroganoff and a salad and have absolutely no complaints. What a hidden gem! I have been here twice now and I can't wait to return again. This is a small house converted into a restaurant. I did not notice a hostess stand upon arriving, but each time a man has always been quick to come over to get our name. We've had to wait each time almost 30 minutes (party of 2 then 5), but it was the weekend and it is on the smaller side. So, it's to be expected and totally worth it. There is a large bar to grab a drink or an appetizer. OK, now for the food. House nachos! Or I would say fancy nachos. Pictures this, flour tortilla wedges covered in cheese, black beans, black olives and tomatoes. I've had them both times and I love them so. Plus, it's huge! For my entree, I've had the Honey Chicken pasta and Feta Chicken Pasta. The Feta chicken pasta is full of veggies (peppers, broccoli and onions) and it's light. I'm always looking for the local favorites (a grateful thank you to Katie from the Mint Museum Uptown for the recommendation). I have to say that the reviews for this wonderful local American pub are not misleading. Dark old school interior with lots of bead-board wainscoting, a tin ceiling, and a variety of vintage print material adorning the walls, the place is comfortable and inviting. The place was full and bustling on this particular Tuesday night (despite being past the dinner hour). The host (who I think has been tagged as "Ken" in an earlier review was friendly and found me a table for one immediately (a great corner booth that gives a good view of the establishment) and my waitress, Traci, was flawless. Clearly a neighborhood haunt, a wide variety of clientele were enjoying the evening making for some pleasant people watching. I really enjoyed my time at AM's, but I must confess that the food was good, but not great. The spicy crab soup was tasty, but not nearly spicy enough, and the 4th Ward Beef Stroganoff had a nice traditional flavor, but the sauce was too thin to stick to the meat or rotini or my ribs. My personal business travel rules discourage me from eating at the same place twice, but if I were in need of a good comfort food meal in a place with some good energy, Alexander Michael's would be on my short list. read more

What's not to love about Alexander Michael's?! Located in the historic part of the 4th Ward and family owned and operated- it is a true gem and like no other place in Charlotte. It is small and cozy with an an intimate ambiance but very casual vibes. The restaurant is especially charming during the Holidays when they decorate...lights and garland galore! Whatever you do, order a cup of the Spicy Crab Soup to start. I seriously dream of this stuff- it is SO good. Cream based soup with big ole chunks of crab. The fried pickles are also an awesome starter. For dinner, I always order the House Salad with blackened chicken and Honey Mustard dressing on the side. It sounds boring, but it really is incredible. Thick cut red onion and cucumbers on the salad the blackened chicken is so moist and flavorful. The honey mustard is also house made and has a kick to it- YUM. My husband always orders the Chicken Pita and gets a side of honey mustard to dip it in. I have tried a few of of the pastas, including the "What It Is" house specialty and the Chicken Marsala- both were delicious and packed with flavor. Small beer and wine menu (makes total sense given the size of the space), but they have a full bar as well. Even through there is pretty much always a wait during dinner time (no reservations), they turn tables quickly and you can always snag a drink at the bar. The service is always quick and friendly as well. I truly can't say enough good things about Alexander Michael's- do yourself a favor and check it out! read more
