I've been coming to Alexander's for the last three years and have always spoken so highly of this restaurant to others. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was disappointing. They changed the menu and removed some of the best items that made this place special. While the server was friendly, the food took a long time to come out--and when it finally did, it was cold. The restaurant wasn't even busy, which made it more frustrating. Sad to say, I don't think I'll be returning. read more

Loved the huge chunks of garlic bread. They use a lot of fresh Roasted garlic here--with their breads, on their pizzas, etc. Loved it! A wonderful Thanksgiving at Alexanders on 30th which surprisingly found us, as visitors to San Diego, pleasantly meandering amidst a quaint residential area in North Park. I had researched venues for dinner and Alexanders was highly lauded, and for good reason. The ambiance was upscale and modern, impressively and romantically decked out in white with a back patio area projecting retro movies silently on a back wall. We sat in the patio which was also decked out in cool white hues and surrounded by white sparkly lights above. Beautiful. We were greeting warmly and professionally with service attentive throughout the evening, making the meal a great choice for a relaxed Thanksgiving. Alexander's had a special menu with ample options for a lovely 3 course meal. For the First Course we opted for the Lobster Bisque and the Roasted Fresh Garlic and Brie Cheese. The soup was delicious and the Brie was welcomingly warm and decadent. For the Second Course we opted for the Oven Roasted Turkey, Beef Burgundy and the Butternut Squash Risotto. The flavors were en pointe and generous. And of course for dessert everyone enjoyed the pumpkin pie, a perfect ending to a wonderful Thanksgiving Meal. Highly recommended! read more

I was so excited to try this place for my friend's birthday dinner but was met with very questionable service. Our initial party reservation was for 7 but unfortunately 2 weren't able to make it. They were trying to have our group of 5 sit on two tables with 2 chairs on one side and 3 people fitting on the booth side. Didn't feel very accommodating as I do not want to bump shoulders and elbows with the person I am sitting next to while trying to enjoy my dinner. We had to ask multiple times to add another table so we'd be more comfortable. Upon receiving our bill, we noticed we were charged an automatic 20% gratuity for a large party of 6+, when we only had 5 people. When we spoke up about it she said it's because they used an extra table to accommodate and stated that was typical tip rate and then proceeded to ask how much we were going to tip. Also my friend's bolognese was tasteless/seasonless compared to everyone else's at the table who ordered the same thing. If I could give a 0 I would, will not be retuning. read more

I'm glad I went back to try it again after a long time and I was pleasantly surprised that it's still as beautiful as ever and the food was stellar!! Lovely spot with a teeny parking lot My partner found this spot and we dined on Valentine's Day. Alexander's was decked out for the holiday with flowers and candles - lovely ambiance. It was a prix fixe menu so my review is limited to that experience. We had salmon volute, beef pappardelle, cheese plate, shrimp tomato bisque, an arugula, strawberry and giant cheese salad and enjoyed cheesecake and tiramisu to finish. The only surprise was crostini with the cheese plate - as we were expecting chewy bread instead of toasts. The food was really lovely and the staff went out of their way to connect with us, even on such a busy night. We were at Alexander's and they had changed the menu but not on the website so that was the start of the problem we ordered the gluten-free pasta. They were out of gluten-free pasta. The service was extreme slow and it was so dark that we couldn't even see what we were eating. It was so cold in there. We asked them to shut the door several times and I got up and shut the door myself several times, but the worst was when I called the restaurant the next day to talk to the manager I left a message three days in a row for them to call me back and they did not care enough to do that. Love the place! Atmosphere is clean and contemporary with great upbeat house music. We were seated in one of the private booths which gave for some privacy and romance. The food was absolutely outstanding! To start, we got a charcuterie board & moscow mule type mocktails. Followed by baked brie with roasted garlic (omg yummmm) their house made cesar & the halibut special. Everything was unbelievable and service was impeccable. So glad we finally made it here! This is the absolute perfect place for a date night. Bread: homemade. Fluffy, light. It was great but also we could have gone without it. Good but not phenom. Honey, goat cheese and bacon appetizer: SLAPPED. The textures on this are 12/10. It is both sweet but savory but crunchy. This was probably our favorite thing. Mac n cheese (we added bacon): hard to decide if the appetizer or this was our favorite. This is gluttonous. But ohhhhh so perfectly so. Super cheesy, large portions, phenomenal. Could share with 2-4 people. White Table: our least favorite thing. The pizza crust was bleh and the cheese and chicken were thick. Not the most flavorful. Crème brûlée: tasty! More custardy than others but still delightful. Service was solid. The maî·tre d was quick to help and checked in on us and he wasn't even our waiter. All the wait staff were lovely. They have an outdoor (with heaters) and an indoor. All chic looking. Everyone ranged from casual nice to date night dress up. Parking here sucks but this whole intersection is like that. With that said never takes more than 5 minutes to drive in the surrounding neighborhoods to find a parking spot so it isn't too bad. We walk here rather often. read more

First time here and it did not disappoint, great food, I got the penne pasta with chicken, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, spinach with a vodka sauce it was soooo good. Tonight, I had a reservation at Alexander's on 30th for my little sister's 21st birthday dinner, with a party of 14 people. Unfortunately, the night got off to a bad start and only went downhill from there. Right away, we noticed how disorganized things were. Two guests at our table ordered the same appetizer, but they were sitting on opposite ends of the table. Instead of bringing them out separately (as any restaurant should), the waitress brought them out on one plate, as if they were meant to share -- even though they had placed separate orders. We had to ask for them to bring out a second plate, which is something we should not have had to clarify. To make matters worse, we weren't even greeted upon arrival, and it took 15 minutes for our server, Jennifer T., to come introduce herself. Then it was another 15 minutes before we got our drinks. When she first approached us, we made it very clear that my sister was the birthday girl and that any questions or issues regarding the reservation should be directed to me or my mother, since we were in charge of the reservation and seated at the head of the table. Despite that, Jennifer continued to speak with other guests at the opposite end of the table instead of checking in with us. Throughout the entire evening, she never once asked if we needed refills, how the food was, or if we needed anything else. The only person who got a refill was my fiancé -- and only because he had to ask another waitress himself. Even then, it took another 15 minutes to receive it. His pizza was incredibly salty, to the point that it was practically inedible. On top of that, I had privately asked a different staff member to bring out a cake we brought from home as a surprise for my sister. That person agreed -- but minutes later, Jennifer loudly announced that the cake was coming out, completely ruining the surprise we had planned. It felt careless and thoughtless. Finally, when the check came, we were shocked to see a $28 cake fee added -- $2 per person -- simply for using the restaurant's plates and forks. At no point were we informed of this charge in advance. It was just added on with no explanation, which felt dishonest and unfair. This was supposed to be a special night, and instead it was frustrating and disappointing. Between the lack of basic service, the ignored instructions, the ruined surprise, and the hidden fee, I would not recommend Alexander's on 30th to anyone -- especially not for a special occasion or large party. Came in for dinner Valentine's weekend to all of the mood lighting in this intimate space. The host was welcoming and sat us in a tall booth to ourselves. We ordered a bottle of wine and the roasted pepper bruschetta to start and had the chicken piccata and pink pasta as our mains. Everything was delicious but tasted more homemade than restaurant style. And I'm not mad about it! Portions for the entrees were filling and left us enough for another dinner the next night. We've been eating at Alexander's for many years. We live in the neighborhood. One of our favorite salads was totally different tonight and not as good. We tried minestrone soup that was new to us. It was not the same quality that we are used to from this restaurant. Some of the garlic bread was good as usual, and some of it was like a crouton! Dry and crusty. Something has obviously changed. After being on the "notify" list for a Tuesday reservation on Open Table I was finally able to get a reservation for a Tuesday evening. Our reservation was for 5:00 (when they open) and there was already about 15 people in line. It was freezing and we had to wait on the line even with a reservation. We made it to the front about 5:25 (I called to let them know we were in line so that we didn't get a no show). I'd had the lobster ravioli before so I tried the lemon ricotta rigatoni. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, but the dish was really dry. I would have preferred some type of sauce with it. The soup of the night was delicious and I ordered a bowl to go as well. Overall with two glasses of wine each, two salads, two cups of soup, one build your own pasta and the lemon ricotta ravioli we spent $100. So much for $8 pasta night lol My friend built an Alfredo pasta and said it lacked salt and pepper. I did secure another reservation so I'll be going back tomorrow and trying a pesto cream pasta build. read more

So disappointed. We had a party of 12 tonight a surprise dinner for my best friend. The service from the start was terrible. It was as if the server knew the 20% gratuity was guaranteed so there was minimal effort. Drink orders took forever, she wouldn't even look at half of the table and try to scurry away so no one else could order anything. Dirty plates the entire meal. I asked her to please wait to bring the desert and candle until we could clean up the table a bit and she didn't care, just dropped off the dessert any way. I truly enjoyed my experience here. The ambience was great. They have an indoor and outdoor area. We ordered the bruschetta for an appetizer and split the 30th street salad, which was amazing. I ordered the Chicken Piccata, and my parents ordered the Chicken Florentine. I absolutely loved my dish, but I wouldn't recommend the Chicken Florentine. It was a bit heavy and not as flavorful. We came here on a Tuesday evening and we actually were able to find parking in their own parking lot. they have very limited parking in their own lot, but were lucky to snag one. Otherwise you do have to find street parking or either neighborhood parking and walk. We made reservations online and that saved us, because some people were trying to do walk-ins and were declined due to the wait or their walk-in waitlist being closed. We got seated right away and they did give us their specials menu, and we did not realize until after ordering that they had a regular menu. We did not mind ordering off their specials menu, but just thought it was a little funny they did not offer the other menu. Our server started off attentive, but then slowly throughout the night barely came and it was hard to flag him down. We think they did forget to bring out the bread that we ordered, and finally when they realized the bread they gave was cold. The Pink Penne Pasta was fresh and hot (good)! The flavor was diverse and with great textured due to the pees, tomatoes, and bacon. The tomatoes especially were not too soft or firm and melted away in the mouth with juicy rich flavors. By far the beat part of the dish. For the price (30$ each) both quantity of food was fair. We dined there on 9/24 and were very happy with the service and food. This was a total redemption from the last time we were there 49 months ago. We won't bring up what happened 49 months ago that led me to have to make food at home, but I will say that we had a 5 star experience this time. Our server was really nice and gave us great suggestions. The inside of the restaurant is designed like their sister restaurant in Pt. Loma called Old Venice which looks really nice. They started us off with their complimentary Garlic Bread which is very crave-able. We split a house salad and for the main course we ordered Chicken Picatta without Capers and their Tuscan Seafood Pasta with Egg Linguine instead of Squid Ink Pasta and had them and some Red Chili Flakes for a kick. The Monday Tuesday build your own pasta deal Is amazing. The price is unbelievable for all that you get. The portion sizes are generous and everything comes out hot and fresh. The restaurant was really packed last Tuesday and it seems to be a new norm for the wait staff. However despite the few hiccups we had they took exceptional care of us. There was a gentleman in a suit that checked in on us several times making sure our needs were met by our waiter. The wait staff was pleasant and very accommodating and patient. I would love to go back here and highly recommend. Many dishes can be made vegetarian and vegan. Also do not skip dessert or wine my girl friend couldn't stop talking about how delicious the mascatto was. Highly recommend dining here for a romantic date or just with friends . Beautiful place.
