I don't know what they put in the bread or what magical place they bought the cheese from, but my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Sweet and it almost had this slight earthy note too... hard to explain but good. It even had that little design on top, like the ones they do on cappuccinos. Didn't expect that but it was cool. She immediately recognized us and was so warm and welcoming. She even asked me to relay her greetings to my sisters when she greeted us and again when we were leaving. A Heartfelt Review from a Longtime Patron I've been coming to this restaurant since the late '80s--back when the owners' children were just kids and their parents greeted you with warmth and pride. Over the years, I've watched their family grow, and I've always appreciated the care they put into their food and the genuine service they offered. It wasn't just a meal--it was a tradition. But sadly, that tradition feels like it's slipping away. Since the expansion to two locations, I've noticed a steady decline in both quality and service. It's disheartening, especially because I've spent years recommending this place to friends and family, confident it would impress. Lately, though, it's been one disappointment after another. I tried ordering the split pea soup--something I've always loved--but it wasn't available. Not once, not twice, but three separate times. So today I settled for the chicken and rice soup and a double cheeseburger. What arrived was a far cry from what I remember. The soup, once hearty and satisfying, had barely five pieces of chicken. No crackers, no roll, no butter. Not even mustard, mayo or ketchup for the burger and fries. Just a flimsy packet of cutlery with one salt and pepper packet for the entire meal. It felt careless. And the cheeseburger? It used to be a standout--thick, juicy, made with quality beef and real cheese. Today's version was barely a quarter pound, and still priced at $18. Honestly, McDonald's offers more for less--and that's saying something. I never thought I'd have to write a review like this, but I'm heartbroken. I've eaten here a few times during the past couple of months and really like the place. The service is great and the prices are reasonable. The food is typical diner food, but that's to be expected. I also like it because it's clean and quiet, no annoying television or radio playing in the background that most restaurants seem to think they need. My only complaint is the coffee, it is the weakest and least flavorful coffee I've ever had. Even the Golden Nugget on Lawrence has better coffee. I would give this place 5 stars if they would do something about their weak, tasteless coffee. read more

I am one of those people who has to work every Sunday so, I'm not willing to spend 45 minutes waiting to eat at M Henry (that's my fav!) Most diners are just ok but, Alexanders is a step above without the trendy attitude that has become so prevalent. The service is friendly and attentive. The food arrives super fast. the omelets are light and fluffy and you can get pancakes instead of toast. Ok, so the coffee sucks but, the fresh squeezed orange juice makes up for it. We order the window special....which just the fact that they have a special permanently written on the windows says a lot about the place! Come as you are. No judgement. I've lived in the neighborhood for years and have visited Alexanders quite a lot. I've always been satisfied with the food and the staff is always great. I used to get breakfast there at least once a week. Lately, I have noticed that the prices seem to be eeaking up a bit. I hope this trend does not continue. It's starting to price itself out of the neighborhood. You actually get better food, a larger quantity, and a lower price at IHOP. But, I still like the neighborhood place. read more

This review is for the Rogers Park location. We had our breakfast and when it came time to pay we were told they couldn't accept cash. There were no signs up about this, no warning from our inattentive waiter when we sat down. Imagine having to send food back not once, but twice. It was almost three, but I finished my food…read moreout of spite! Respectfully, the kitchen needs to get it together. I ordered a 2-2-2 combo with eggs over medium, and a "smaller than a kiddie size" amount of home fries. The two bacon strips were absolutely fine. Crisp, not overdone, okay size, no notes or complaints. The eggs were fine for over easy, but a liquid yolk does not an over-medium egg make. This idea of being underdone applied fully to their batter-based products. The first batch of pancakes was so gooey in the middle, I could taste the raw flour still. I caught my server, and sent them back for being "hilariously underdone." When the new batch arrived, the interior was no longer raw, but still more gooey than a pancake has any business being. When asked how the second batch was, I responded with "Are they supposed to be gooey inside?" The response comes: "That's just how we make them." Detecting I was still not very happy, the server, to her credit, offered to switch them to something else, like a waffle, which i agreed to. Out comes the waffle... guess what? The inside was also more gooey than it is supposed to be. Perhaps the only thing that allowed me to finish was that the exterior was crisp enough to eat without the soggy-bread consistency of the pancakes. "That's just how we make them" is not an excuse. Somewhere out there is a person who likes "medium-rare" chicken. They are entitled to their preference, and the health disasters that come with it. This person also has no business cooking this way for anyone else. An extreme example, but I trust I've made my point. Then we arrive at the home-fries. As a standalone item, this was enjoyable. They were deep fried, and seasoned such that they required neither salt nor pepper. One problem: the portion size was their standard, rather large size. Look, if a spot has only a standard size, then fair enough, but inform the customer requesting a baby-size portion accordingly While the service was pleasant being welcoming and friendly, there's a lot more to it than that. The potatoes are one example. Another is the bottomless coffee mug was not refilled in due course, and when it was, a new cup of black coffee was brought, completely ignoring the creamer container now filled with used napkins, neither removing it nor providing a new one. Also, when food is sent back, unless we're talking about a deep dish pizza with its prep time, one would hope it would be prioritized and sent out fast, though based on how long it took to get a second batch of underdone pancakes, this was not the case. Finally, we arrive at the prices. Due to the abject failures of the meal, I ended up being charged only for a (too-big) order of home fries, a single waffle, and a coffee. All of that, after tax, came to $22.75. This isn't expensive, it's not even overpriced, it's downright highway robbery. Final verdict: one word: No! I *did* enjoy the coffee, and found it strong and tasty . Otherwise, Dollop Diner not only hit rock bottom, but they started digging. Maybe the heat from the planet's core would help them not serve raw pancakes?

Super friendly, helpful, attentive without hovering. The food: My Reuben was okay. Solid. Extra kraut, check. The french fries were crispy outside, moist inside, very good! My companions food looked great - standard eggs, bacon, pancakes, sausages. Well done! The interior - looks like it was recently remodeled. It's not stylish, it's not threadbare. It's somewhat hilariously tacky with weird murals, and photographic "Welcome to Hilltop" compositions. It's diner food. It's basic. It's good!

I had the thanksgiving wrap which was quite good and had stuffing, sweet potatoes, turkey, and cranberries in a wrap. Unique and tasty. My gripes are two fold. The service was sub par with the staff not being attentive. In addition everything on the menu is about 10-20% higher than it should be. Yes I know the economy is squeezing restaurants but charging $18 for a wrap and having the side be à la carte for an extra $5 seems excessive. Especially if you're passing on a credit card fee to consumers. Gripes aside, I would recommend this place for a quick bite as it fills a much needed diner niche in Andersonville.

These are the exact kind of scones I've been looking for since the late 90's. I chose a blueberry and a chocolate chip. It truly is a taste of heaven. Great location and super cute inside.
