My friends and I wanted a place with classic breakfast food (as opposed to the frilly stuff of pricier restaurants). Alexander's gave just that. It's a typical diner with good food. I've had the biscuits and gravy with eggs and sausage (possibly the biscuits were a bit dry, but covered in gravy it didn't really matter) and another morning I got pancakes with strawberry topping. My go to spot for when i just want to have a bite to eat, or chill with a friend or colleague. Great tasting food. Very pleasant staff. Been coming here for years. Food is nothing spectacular, but that's why its good. Simple, homegrown diner with simple cooking. Above average, but you or yo momma can probably cook it yourselves with a decent amout of time and a lot of care. i prefer to pay them to do it, because they're really great at it. Have tried well over 2 dozen of their menu items, between breakfast and lunch (this has been over the past 5 years). They always have good specials too. Great pricing as well. DANGER - RECYCLED BREAD!!! And other UNSANITARY practices!!! I've been going to this place for years and always thought that it was "OK" until yesterday. We decided to sit at the counter for the first time. Behind the counter, directly beneath it in a large drawer, the dinner rolls/bread is stored in a white plastic garbage bag. (That seems fine to me.) Some of the waitresses use tongs to remove the bread; that's great. They place the bread in reused "baskets" with cracker packets, etc... Keep in mind that those cracker packets likely have been in that basket for a while with potentially countless of other customers' hands touching them. Then, one must take note of the bare dirty baskets that are used, ones that are not wrapped with cloth/napkin. HERE'S WHERE IT GETS REALLY GROSS. I noted that over and over, in the cases where there were LEFT OVER pieces of bread in baskets from departing customers, that bread is thrown back into the "bag/drawer" beneath the coffee counter. I thought to myself that I must have been hallucinating. Then I saw it happen again! I was really bothered by this and THEN when we received our check, I saw our waitress promptly take "OUR" unused, but still "touched" bread and throw it back into that bag/drawer. She used HER OWN HANDS to do this. It is sort of weird, because some use tongs, others don't, but all seem to "reuse" the bread. I've been FIGHTING A COLD and now someone else likely will get my cold. Now think about how many other people have consumed contaminated bread. I'm sorry to whoever may have eaten the bread that I may have contaminated, but after all it was MINE in the first place and shouldn't have been reused!!!! (Maybe I was the 2nd, 3rd or 4th person to have that same piece of bread on the table in front of me?) I thought about bringing this up to them since I witnessed multiple of the waitresses doing this, but I didn't want to make a scene. I don't really think I ask for too much in a breakfast place. I expect that if the menu says that it's fresh squeezed orange juice and they're charging $4 a glass for it that it doesn't come out of a carton that I could buy at Jewel. I mean, they don't have to squeeze it in front of me, but it should be squeezed on-site, and, preferably, in the last day or so. I also think that blueberry pancakes should have, you know, blueberries, not some canned blueberry pie filling stuff. Maybe these shouldn't be the standards by which a breakfast place should be judged, but, with only those two criteria identified, it's astounding how few places are actually, you know, decent. Alexander's has real orange juice, straight from real oranges that you can see right there behind the counter. The blueberry pancakes not only have blueberries, but, man, they must've put a whole dang pint of blueberries in there. Plus, gotta tell you, the price is right. the food is awesome and the waitresses are very nice. My favorite dish here is the labamba skillet. I've had different variations of this dish, but none quite as good as Alexander's. Other dishes I've had are Greek omelet, the pancakes, and the Alexander special, all of which were very good. read more

I love a good stack of pancakes and Alexander's wins the award for Best Pancakes in Chicago. I don't know what they are doing to make them so good, but I could eat them forever. There is a really weirdo waitress who works there, though, and I wish they would fire her. She kept serving over the brass railing rather than walking around to the table and she came really close to dumping food in my lap not once but three times (one time was soup). We were also trying to have a conversation and she kept coming over and talking to us, with kind of a smart mouth. I've avoided the restaurant because of her, but I will come back for the pancakes. As a neighbor, the great staff at Alexander's have to deal with me at my worst, just having rolled out of bed and in dire need of coffee and some nourishment. Yet, they always greet you with a smile, or after I've received my food, a sarcastic comment if I ask for more coffee (but it comes immediately!). There are always a wide array of specials - something to fit anyone's taste. The staples for breakfast are what we go for, and they never fail to please. We have been here a few time. Maybe 5. We have brought our family from out of town and the people who work here are so nice and service is good but I will admit the food is not so good. The omelette are over cooked and the game was full of grizzle. their hash brown potatoes are always w burnt pieces. Very over cooked. I ordered a club to go and the bread was stale and one piece was cut so small I threw it out. Turkey was sliced super thick. I ordered a burger and the bread was stale again. The folks here are really sweet and nice. Everyone from the waitstaff to the customers -- all were very accommodating. We have a kid+car seat, and I believe the couple in the booth actually sped up the last bits of their meal to let us sit down. I have to disagree on the review of the Mousaka . It was wonderful and just like I was in Greek town!!! All Mousaka has potatoes. And the eggplant , meat and sauce is just perfect!! This is a true neighborhood diner and a Rogers Park gem. Definitely come for breakfast. I've only been twice for lunch--once had a grilled cheese and once a tuna sandwich, both serviceable but not totally satisfying. But the breakfast items are great. The pancakes are light and fluffy, the eggs are always done just right, etc. But the best thing about this place is the service and family-owned feel. Sometimes I like to have a cup or two of coffee and then switch to diet coke, and every time I've said so the waitresses have asked if the coffee was okay. Even after I reassured them that it was fine they usually left the diet coke off the bill. There also have been a couple times that I didn't feel well and didn't eat a lot of my meal, and both waitresses were similarly concerned and made sure nothing was wrong with the food. And as it is they're very attentive. Service this good is hard to find. read more
