Wowowow .... Visited Alimento twice, my most recent being today -- 6/27. It's a small deli shop that offers gelato, sandwiches, and pastries. They also have quite a large selection of alcohol and cigarettes-- which could make for a good quick pick-me-up. I visited on a Wednesday night and got myself a cone with two scoops of Hazelnut Brownie + Stracciatella -- which were honestly so yummy. It was stretchy and soft and made for a perfect dessert after dinner. You are allowed only two samples though so be wary of your choices. Today, when I went -- I was excited to try their sandwiches, I was looking at the menu and the Alpino caught my eye. Normally, not a fan of bacon but this sandwich was fresh- the mix they offer in sauces and veggies were so good. The sandwich was refreshing to eat with a decent amount of turkey slices they packed in. The bread was also toasted and gave a nice crunch with a soft interior to every bite. The sandwich is admittedly a little pricey, but I would purchase again. Now the customer service, like other reviews may have mentioned was a little off at times? It didn't feel friendly or welcoming at times and when I was ordering I felt rushed or ignored-- I was trying to order two sandwiches to which, she immediately began to make the first one without a single word. I chose to wait until she was done because I wasn't sure when I could let her know about the other order as she was moving back and forth between stations, but she finished and I let her know about the other order to which she said, "How many more sandwiches?" Honestly, that comment did throw me off a little, but I told her this was the last one and she did make it quite quickly. Now, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt as she could be tired or not feeling the best-- but I would say I just wished she was a bit more acknowledgeable toward the customers behind the counter as it did make me discomforted by her lack of response and also the reaction she had when I let her know about the other sandwich. She did at least tell me to have a good day afterwards, so I do hope this isn't going to be a reoccurring incident as I really do love coming to Alimento for the gelatos and sandwiches. (~_~;) I would recommend coming here if you're visiting around North Beach! Alimento makes for a great lunch spot with their sandwiches or a nice sweet treat with their gelato. ^o^ read more

There were so many flavors of gelato available along the L-shaped counter that it was hard to settle on a flavor, but I eventually opted for a scoop of black cherry chip gelato in a waffle cone. It was really good, but I had to eat it kind of fast because the gelato was really soft, and it was hot outside, causing it to melt faster than usual. I made it to the last few bites before it started dripping so not bad. Funnily enough, I'd passed by Alimento countless times before but had never tried it. I was on my way out of town while walking through Little Italy and I wasnt really hungry until I walked by like every spot and this place caught me when I saw someone eating this sanny with good looking bread. I walked past it and got like a block away and was like maaaaaan shiiiiiittt Im turning around lol. I went back and came to get a sanny and Im happy I did, I was planning on eating it on the walk. The place has a lot of choices like a regular deli youd find in the northeast. San Francisco has definitely the best Little Italy as far as choices to pick from and its really big and spread out. I had the Goodfella. Roast beef, prosciutto, salami, provolone and basil. I added the pesto and olive oil and replaced the provolone with fresh mozzarella. Best part was there was an old ass lady who made the sanny and she loaded it lol. The bread makes the sandwich and it was really soft and crunchy. Soo good. This place had been my go-to for gelato in North Beach for years now. My top flavors have to be either stracciatella or lemon cookie :) Inside is always busy whether night or day, and they allow customers up to two samples of the gelato flavors. I've read that they also make sandwiches, which I would also love to try one day. When you pay at the register, they have all kinds of yummy European chocolate that you don't see at many places. The cannoli's are also so mouthwatering, and they have a variety of different kinds per preference. I've never enjoyed my gelato right out front but I see many people sitting down every time I've visited. They also slide their front window all the way open to create a more ventilating and welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend for amazing gelato and other goodies :) read more

Stopped in here after a long walk around North Beach and this was the perfect treat to end the day! Got a cookies & cream gelato that was so good and reminded me of my favorite gelato from Dolce Spazio in the South Bay (still the better one but I'll take Alimento being a quick walk away)! We were in the city and wanted to get an authentic Italian sub without the long weight of the more popular spot. Alimento is small galley style shop that is a mix of a gelato spot, deli, coffee shop and convenience store that sells cigarettes and alcohol. Two of us got the speciale and one got the alpino. The sandwiches are flavorful and fresh although the bread did tear up the roof of our mouth. We also tried the gelato which was pretty but just OK. My wife had a Americano and it was strong and hot just like we like. There's a limit of 2 flavors for samples. I got excited about trying their Cardamom gelato, but the employee told me there wasn't any left and that was actually mint chip one, which was disappointing. The employee was very prompt and quick with helping me, which I appreciate. I got the Spumoni, and the medium was a generously filled cup. Texture-wise, it was a bit icy and hard for me, not as buttery and smooth as other places. The flavor was great though; I loved the chopped nuts in it. The Stracciatella I sampled was also very good! While walking to my chosen lunch spot, I kept noticing how many "new" businesses that weren't there between 2020 and 2022. I used to take my goddaughter, the furry variety, along this route and there were so many boarded doors and windows. As I walked, I took photos of places that piqued my interest. She told me that the small size was not available. I am saving this for a future visit in case something appeals to my stomach for a future lunch. I passed on her offer, paid for my gelato, and walked to my car. The hazelnut brownie was rich but the flavors seemed a bit muted and not bold. The brownie pieces didn't really stand out and the hazelnut didn't add much to it. I will probably try the lychee one next visit. The gal at the cashier was very nice and friendly, helping me with a smile throughout. Late night ice cream run One of the best Sorbet place I've tried yet! Lots of flavors and the texture plus flavor of all the flavors are so good! I would recommend getting a fruity flavor (mango!!). 2.5/5 stars cannoli was disappointing. It was stale. Everything was stale, even the filling. 5/5 stars Mango Sorbet. We just recently had a very warm weekend in the city so warm and so some late night gelato dessert was in order. The perfect follow up after Tony's. The store was buzzing with people. I genuinely believe people are just looking for ways to get rid of their extra money. There is no recession in this part of the city. People sitting fat and happy. Laughing: ha, ha, ha... he, he, he. Things are great in Little Italy - and its so nice to be a part of it. In addition to some desserts I get some Molinari and some Speck Italiano. If you don't know what that is you haven't been living and your not from here. Prices for things doubled since my last review in 2016. Its been 8 years and I'm only aware since I looked at old photos and an old review right before writing this one. Prices slowly creep up in a way you don't even notice it. I walked in and didn't think the prices were high at all. Thing were just in alignment with other similar places nearby. I love old familiar places like this. They withstand the test of time. Great also was the patio and seating areas. Its gotten to the point I can't really enjoy desserts in the comfort of my own home without sharing with Mr Moose or locking myself in my bedroom. The whole experience screamed unsanitary. I watched the lady make my sandwich without changing gloves once while touching multiple surfaces, then wipe those same dirty gloves on an already filthy rag before continuing to handle food. The cross contamination was hard to ignore and I had a bad feeling the entire time. Sure enough after eating the sandwich I got sick and had the worst stomach ache. Prefacing this first to say I'm not really a dessert person but also when I was in Italy I got gelato every day after lunch and dinner for almost a week so I've sampled my fair share. The gelato was really really wet, like it did not hold its shape very well whatsoever. Yes, admittedly gelato should be softer and silkier than regular ice cream hardness so I was expecting some softness, but this gelato would be in the ribbon stage (shout out to my bakers out there). I ended up with Spumoni and Hazelnut. Both flavors were balanced and not overly sweet. I liked how Hazelnut had a creamy, rich, nutty taste. I have been coming here for a few years and it makes me sad to write this review but I felt I had to. I live in Hayward and will take the drive just to come here for a sandwich something me and my daughter enjoy doing. Today we did just that. The woman who was making the sandwiches was rude. Her demeanor was frustration when I was ordering my sandwich there was even a sigh. Once she made mine my daughter decided instead of us sharing one she wanted one herself, I then asked politely if I can get one more, the same. The response ? Nothing. I look is what I got and an eye roll even as she made the other sandwich: it was completely empty today so I don't understand the negativity. The sandwiches are about 20.00 each, which is a stretch so coming from the east bay to buy a sandwich as a treat and to be treated the way we were is disappointing. Not a single word of thank you , how can I help you, or even here is your sandwich. I had no idea it was placed on the counter until I was told by my daughter. The lady at the cashier was I bit friendlier I suppose. We usually sit outside and order gelato after, however we decided we did not want to further support this business. I will be looking for another deli where I am not treated like a burden but rather a customer. I can understand if I was rude but I was not.
