I had a dreadful experience at the previous gelateria I tried, which involved a $30 delivery order for a single pint at the urging of a friend who swore up and down it was worth it. I kid you not, half the container was carb filler, corn flakes or some such crap. That friend is still trying to regain my trust. If you told me then that my next gelato attempt would be a $40 delivery, blind, I'd attack you with my rolling pin and screaming "Sparisci!" God, whyyyy does gelato have to be so expensive? At the very least, this gelato was phenomenal. All 3 flavors had me slapping my mother and the poor woman was stuck in 2 dimensions behind a picture frame! I know I paid too much but I don't feel ripped off. It was more of a treat for my husband. I got the ~2 pint...err...trough lol...with 3 flavors. Salted Caramel, Gianduja, and the L'inimitabile. Not to toot my own horn here, but I can get by in Italy on my eloquent-as-a-banshee Florentine when up north, thanks to my doctorate degree in taking my sweet ass time at CCSF. I can even wield what little Salentino has remained with me after all these years when I'm in Puglia. Trying to pronounce "L'inimitabile" in my head has been nothing short of self-inflicted emotional terrorism. I'm not the type of person to care where an ingredient comes from, even when it's exotic and upscale-sounding, because best-case scenario it's after midnight and I am rifling through the production standards of that crop in its homeland while all my actual obligations are put on hold because I'm not allowed to take my medication after 6pm. Madagascar vanilla was fun. Let's guess how many baby lemurs I've slaughtered for this passing indulgence. I prefer everything local, like this boxed wine from the Tenderloin. Franzia, cara mia! Ever since my annual visits to Italy 20-25 years ago, I have been trying to find that "Nutella" flavor that used to be EVERYWHERE (I now know it wasn't literally Nutella but some hodgepodge of chocolate and hazlenut with the shade of brown of a German chocolate pie) in both Italy but also local gelaterias here like Naia. L'inimitabile is the closest but it still isn't quite there. Unfortunately, your product is too expensive (certainly for delivery) to be a regular visitor to our door but I do see us indulging on special occasions and possibly waltzing in when we are in the neighborhood! All the Naia locations disappeared but they apparently still ship product to supermarkets. I contacted Naia asking about that Nutella flavor they used to carry and they completely ignored me. I would've accepted a vague threat like "if we told you, we'd have to kill you" but ignoring me comes at a price. Maybe I'll leave a withering comment as a footnote in my review for a competing gelateria, then if you stumble upon this years down the road, I hope the embarrassment moistens a liquid charge down your pant leg. read more

Just across the street from Chinatown's famous gate, Amorino is a fun place to get fun rose petal designed gelato, especially when you're able to pick and choose multiple different favors limited only by the number of petals on your gelato flower. Great place for gelato and sorbet! I got a small cone with two flavors: lemon and mango. The lemon sorbet tasted like I was eating a frozen lemonade and the mango sorbet had a strong mango flavor. They have free samples and the service was good! There is seating inside and outside. read more

While visiting San Francisco's Union Square, I wanted to enjoy a sweet treat, but being a visitor, I didn't know firsthand where to go. A quick internet search brought up lots of results for dessert shops, but it wasn't really clear which was better than the other at a glance. There are no shortage of bakeries, ice cream and gelato spots...many with favorable reviews. With so many to chose from decided to search photos and was pleasantly surprised by the images from the business Amorino's. I was stunned by the beautiful presentation of their gelato in the form of a beautiful flower. They stood out from the pack immediately and I had to go see (and taste) for myself. I'm so glad I did...from the moment I walked in the staff was pleasant and welcoming. They answered my questions (and I had a lot because there were so many flavors to choose from). This cute little gelato cafe is right in front of china town. There were three workers behind the counter but none of them greeted us as we came in (the last customers were leaving & we were the only ones who came in at that moment). So I already didn't feel welcome. Luckily, there was a kiosk where you can order. I always find that super convenient because I can take my time looking :). One of our orders was incorrect (they gave us one scoop when it should've been three different ones). Because we luckily had our receipt, they corrected it. I ordered the stracciatella & mint chocolate chip. I find the consistency to be more icy than creamy which is what I look for when eating gelato. This place was right next to my hotel, luckily, I only visited them once. It was a little confusing if you don't know the way the order goes. You pay at the register first, then you move down the ice cream display case to pick your flavors. They also allow samplings. And the flower gelato is just adorable. Yum! read more

We stumbled upon this place right next to our hotel a few weeks back and were thrilled to take advantage of the 10% discount for hotel guests (just show your room card or mention it at the register, easy!). Walking in, the ordering process is a little unclear, even after two visits, I'm still not 100% sure of the "right" way to do it, lol. But don't let that stop you! They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and while the indoor area is a bit cozy, I love that you have options so you're not stuck outside when the weather isn't cooperating. Now, onto the good stuff - the gelato! My go-to is Stracciatella and I happily stuck with it both visits. My first time, I was in a bit of a rush (checkout waits for no one!) so I went with a cup. Big mistake, not because of the gelato, but because I had NO idea they do the most adorable flower/rose design on a cone. Super IG-worthy and honestly reason enough to come back, which I did! On my second visit, I went for the Small Signature, which comes topped with a macaron and your choice of 2 flavors. I only wanted Stracciatella they doubled up on that. The pistachio macaron was a touch softer than I prefer but still totally yums. The gelato itself? Absolutely delicious and honestly, it's hard to go wrong with good gelato! My husband got a Small Pistachio in a cup and I naturally had to sneak a taste. 4.5 star My friend and I came in on a Thursday night, and it wasn't as busy (got very busy after we left). I got the classic cup with 2 flavors: vanilla & stracciatella. Close to union square, so parking can be a challenge depending on when you go. We walked up fairly late on a weeknight and it was nearly zero wait time. I will say the caveat to that is they had already ran out of multiple flavors. Even so, they have SO many flavors there was still a large variety to choose from. I was in the mood for something lighter and refreshing so I elected to go for the sorbettos. I really appreciate that they do not limit how many flavors you can have by the size you select. They have multiple options for sizing on cups and cones which is v v nice. Downside may be that they are on the pricier side, again being located in union square, this is understandable. I ultimately got 3 flavors : mango, raspberry, and blood orange. They were all delightful and very true to flavor. Think eating a smooth frozen version of the exact fruit. Blood orange was my favorite - highly recommend giving it a try if you're a citrus + dessert fan. It is a fairly small shop but there is a small seating area in the back of the store. I use to go to the Amorino all the time in Beverly Hills when I lived in SoCal and also to the one at the Livermore outlets. Sadly, the outlets location closed down. But luckily, I still can get my fix of Amorino right in the heart of San Francisco, just steps away from the Chinatown Grant entrance. My favorite flavor is the yogurt gelato and it is perfectly tart and creamy. Sometimes I would get that flavor by itself or combined with strawberry which makes a lovely strawberry yogurt flavor. There was one time that the yogurt flavor tasted very off, like super sour and maybe spoiled. Always, always, always sample the flavors first before you make your selection. I wouldn't want anyone stuck with a flavor they don't like or with something tasted spoiled. Luckily, on my most recent visit, the yogurt was perfect and it is the main reason I come back. Staff is fine at this location. They always seem to be on their phone and whenever they make the roses, it is somewhat sloppy. Service is fine and not like it use to be. My husband and I stumbled across this little ice cream shop on an evening walk in San Francisco. He loves ice cream so we had to go in and get something. I forget the flavors we got this night, but their flavors are usually all good. It doesn't taste too sweet or too artificial so I did not object to a sweet treat this night. Came here on a Monday evening for a post-dinner dessert. It wasn't busy and there were plenty of places to sit (with outlets). I decided to play it safe and got a small cup with tiramisu and pistachio. The portion size is great, as they really do pack the cup with a lot of gelato. The texture of the gelato was soft and creamy, which was good. However, the flavors were a huge miss. I wish I sampled them before choosing but usually places don't do tiramisu and pistachio wrong. The tiramisu was way too sweet. The pistachio... didn't really taste like pistachio? I'm not really sure how to describe what it tasted like... The gelato here was amazing! The hot chocolate was average but we would come back just for the ice cream. Just watch the charges we ordered a few things and got overcharged for a gourmet hot chocolate but only given a small regular one. The line was too long to wait so we just cut out losses. I'm always eating gelato when I'm traveling in Europe and in the states. Rarely does gelato measure up here in the states. This gelato does. It's a small shop with limited seating. It is elegantly decorated. The staff is friendly and quick. The scoops are sculpted to look like flowers. Lots of creative flavors along with the traditional flavors. I opted for the blueberry cheesecake. The cheesecake element didn't really come through, but the blueberry flavor did. One of the better blueberry gelato or ice creams I've had. read more

I have been to Amorino in London, Paris and Lisbon and always had 5 star experiences. I was excited to find one in San Francisco, but unfortunately, the experience was terrible. No one was at the counter when we came in, but my husband and I were able to order at the kiosk. Then a young man appeared and completely ignored us, even though we were the only customers there. He seemed to be restocking so I said, "Hi, we ordered with the kiosk." He sort of nodded without speaking or making eye contact and started on our order. We sat down and the music was uncomfortably loud and with explicit lyrics. I was glad we didn't have our kids with us this time! The spoons and forks were also turned the wrong way so that when he got the spoons out of the holder, he touched the spoons rather than the handle. I hope the manager either trains the staff in customer service and health food regulations or hires someone else. It's a great location, so it's a shame this one is not a good experience.
