Once again, Alinas never fails to deliver. My wife and I frequent Alina's, whether it is for a nice evening out, a few cocktails at the bar by the best bartender(s) in the valley for Martinis ( orange bitter manhattan my fav), or our very own rehearsal dinner for our wedding. Alinas is one of the most consistent fine dining experiences we have yet to discover in the valley. The best part of Alinas aside for the outstanding food, is the greeting coming through the door. The kitchen pass is open to the entrance, and Chef Martin never fails to smile and greet every patron coming through, making you feel welcome and familiar, even if you have never been at Alina's before. His wife, Maritza runs front house, and the staff are all impeccably trained. I cannot recommend enough. read more

On my way to my hotel, I spied this restaurant, which presumably had positive ratings. I got a take out order of "Palermitana", vegetarian angel hair pasta dish with rapi greens, garlic, pig oil nuts, sun-dried tomatoes and an "Avocado Salad". The pasta was oily and bitter, presumably due to the rapi greens. Although the pasta was prepared satisfactorily, the lack of balance of this dish made it an expensive insult to my palate, costing $22 for the failed exercise. Hoping that the salad would be able to offset the poor entrée, I opened the the container of the salad, only to find an excess of dressing, absence of goat cheese, soggy lettuce, and over-ripen avocados. The dressing certainly did not rescue the salad. Although the restaurant may have had a bad moment, since it was closing time, I still felt compelled to report this failed expensive opportunity at an "Italian cuisine with a Mediterranean flair". read more

It has been a few years since we have been to Alina's. Went last night and ordered calamari appetizer and veal saltimbocca. The calamari came out immediately. It was served with a horseradish sauce - nothing fancy. After being served the calamari immediately we waited close to 45 minuets for the entree. The menu called it veal saltimbocca but it wasn't and it was overdone. It was rolled. The sauce was more like a Marsala and it was hard to find the prosciutto. The portion of meat was healthy but the sides were barely detectable in the plate. I recommend changing the name of the meal or perhaps serving saltimbocca. I know the trend is to provide an eclectic dining experience - so then don't have a traditional name for an entree. This is the fourth time I have been to Alina's but I feel like they are moving in a Different direction. It is a nice family run establishment but that's all I can say positive right now. read more

So disappointed. Had a reservation set a month in advance for 5 people at 7:30. We arrive a little early to an empty hostess stand. When she finally returns she nods me in and literally starts screaming "Meghan, Meghan" to seat another table. We waited twenty five minutes past our reservation time and when we finally get seated ( in the basement) it's at a table for four. We explain reservation was for five and so she wanted to just stick a chair in the edge of an already cramped table. I asked what else we could do. She explained we could wait but it would be the same table setup anyway. So we stayed. Our waitress could not have been more agreeable. The food was mediocre but then two of the five of us got sick on the way home. I definitely will never go back read more

Came here on a Saturday on recommendation from a family member. It was a special anniversary for my husband and I. The place was hopping. So glad we had a reservation. Had a cocktail prior to seating. The hostess, Maritza, said she could seat us even though it was early. As my husband reached for his wallet to settle the bar bill, I saw the look of panic come over him. Forgot his wallet and I didn't even have a purse. Too far to travel home to save our reservation, Maritza, calmly gave us an immediate resolution and showed us to our table. My husband ordered the Seafood pasta, and I had the Filet Mignon all while listening to the fabulous piano music. Through the meal, I observed Maritza, not only hostessing, but setting up tables, bringing drinks, and taking phone calls. I love a team player, when the team needs an assist. Turns out she was the manager! The food was amazing, and so was Maritza, for saving our special evening, which could have been disastrous. I would highly recommend this restaurant as the food is amazing. My only afterthought would be that if you want a quieter evening, to try it on a weekday night. First time, went on"date night" Tuesday and chose the "Piano room." Wonderful food in dated setting. Recommended. Ed's piano accentuated a delicious meal. Cameron, our server, was prompt & attentive without hovering and unobtrusively paced service at several tables perfectly. My rack of lamb with gorgonzola, wine reduction and caramelized pear was balanced. My wife's shrimp and scallop scampi boasted full yet pleasing lemon & wine flavors. Meatball app was heavy on garlic but enjoyable. The bottle of Stonecap Merlot included in the prix fixe was fine. Spring mix salad had good house dressing. The tiramisu was nontraditional, (whipped cream rather than mascarpone?) with only mild coffee & cocco and no alcohol, but was pleasantly fun. More costly but better than most Pioneer Valley eateries. Decor from the 1990's feels like my parent's restaurant, needs updating badly (!) to attract under 50 y/o, but quality of food and service saves the day. Go for the food and service. read more

Meh. I've experienced better. This resaurant is basically the samething as it was when it was Carmelina's. The food was OK. The Service GREAT. The Drinks Great. A BIG disapointment was that we asked for a quiet table for four and wound up being seated across from a party of six adults and four children. The whole place is VERY NOISY! all of us had to lean-in to hear each other speak because the noise and surrounding conversations were bouncing of all the hard surfaces. Hard wooden floors, and no drapery around the windows causes this restauarnt to feel like a garage rather than an upscale restaurant. I was expecting a complete re-do. Carpeting on the floors, Drapery on the windows, Dividers to seperate large parties or families, An expanded entrance with the Hostess stand and some sort of waiting area or coat check area. Our request was obviously ignored when we were shown to the table across from a large family and their birthday celebration. With the high prices that this particular restaurant charges I will be going somewhere else to have some quiet atmosphere, along with good food. read more

Our appetizer was delicious, but it was small and expensive for what it was. I ordered the tuna for dinner and it was very good. However, my husband ordered a steak and it was overcooked. When it comes to great Italian food in the area, none exists. Alina's probably does the best job, but it leaves a LOT to be desired and comes across as mediocre. The dishes served here aim to be "upscale Italian" like you would find in Boston's Northend or New York's Little Italy and while they retain the price, they don't carry the satisfaction or flavor. I've been here twice to give it a fair shake and left moderately disappointed each time. The bar options are good, but that does not overshadow the food and the cost. If you keep your expectations in check, Alina's is OK. I wouldn't recommend it, nor would I avoid it. For a celebration or memorable evening, Alina's would not make my shortlist. read more

I am not one to give 5 stars, but Alina's deserves it for being the best around this area. I was in Western Mass from California dropping off a kid at college. My family and I live in San Francisco and are used to eating really good food with natural ingredients on a regular basis. We ate around Amherst for a few days and were unimpressed until we found Alina's for dinner. Alina's is truly an upscale Italian restaurant that could compete in any city. It isn't cheap, and can easily run (with wine, coffee, and dessert) up to $50 per person. But if you want top-quality cooking in the Amherst area, this is the place. The Duck Arancione Confit is one of the best duck dishes you'll ever eat. I eat alot of Asian-style duck, and ate duck all over Italy on a recent trip. Alina's duck dish was right up there with the best. It is half a duck confitted and served with a surprisingly light orange juice/cognac butter sauce. I also had the Palermitana, a lighter, non-red-sauce Sicilian veggie pasta dish, made tasty with pignoli nuts and golden raisins over angel hair pasta. This was really different, but very flavorful, and perfect if you are not super hungry or don't want a meat dish. Most of the dishes come in two sizes: entree and appetizer sizes. The entree size is $5 more on most dishes and worth the extra cost because the cheaper, appetizer sizes are way too small if you have any appetite. The after-dinner espresso and desserts were great. The wine list is impressive. Our server, Kristen, was very friendly and gave us lots of info about the area. I should point out that we felt very welcome as an inter-racial family (an earlier post raised a concern about service toward minorities). We are definitely returning on our next trip. read more

Clean food. ingredients presented in their fresh, whole, natural, but well seasoned state. Someone in that kitchen knows what they are doing. Garlic shrimp, well seasoned and acidically balanced. brasato, a phenominal well rounded hearty meaty plate with a stick to your ribs type braised in veal reduction. black garlic beef: seared beautifully, sweet, salty, black, garlicky, buttery and pretty. linguine Alina, creamy essence of lobster and shelfish with lots of seafood, rosemary and capers..strange combination but keeps you digging for another forkfull. All phenomenal flavors and presentation. Although slightly noisy, every thing about this place including the service easily makes up for it. 5 stars ALL THE WAY. read more

Yelp's description of a two-star rating fits my Alina's experience perfectly: "Meh. I've had better." I was expecting more, and what I got was an Italo-American rehash, and a poor one at that. As you can see from my other reviews, I am fair. I give reviews across the board. I am not impressed by pomp, circumstance, large menus, complicated "themes," or any other restaurant gimmicks. I am impressed with care, locality, seasonality, and clean flavors. I asked our server if the lobster raviolis and the potato gnocchi were made in-house. No. Okay. Chef gets points for being honest. But I am not going to pay $23 for frozen lobster ravioli from Boston. Ditto with the gnocchi. My husband, however, was willing to do so. And the lobster ravioli came topped with an overly thick tomato cream sauce and shrimp. And sausage. And chicken. More meat did not mask the fact that the lobster in the lobster ravioli was nowhere to be found. I had a pasta dish which was, again, coated in an overly thick cream sauce. Heavy on texture, sluggish on the palette. A muddled flavor. I was looking for something cleaner. To their credit, the fried calamari appetizer was the only time I have ever in my life eaten calamari which was not rubbery. In fact, until Alina's, I had assumed that calamari was simply rubbery and was to be avoided like the clap. It's not. At Alina's, it's tender and encased in a light batter. I would not go back to Alina's, nor would I recommend it to anyone. read more

My wife and I wanted to try this place because it's owned by the same chef that worked as head chef in Carmilina's (See Hadley, MA). Unfortunately our experience was not as good as expected. We sat at the bar and as compared to other restaurants, it's not as comfortable. The atmosphere is a little loud because of the openness of the space. Our waitress was the bartender and she did tend to our needs well enough. The food was okay. By that I mean that I was expecting a bit more "wow". I had the Shrimp Fradiavolo and I have to say it wasn't very spicy. Basically tasted like shrimp spaghetti. Not even a hint at any cherry peppers either. My wife had the V-One Cannelloni and frankly it looked like, and tasted like chicken enchilada's. The wine list and selection is actually pretty good and I was impressed as to the house's ability to encourage different selections. So, although we were not overly thrilled with everything we do understand they have not been opened very long and are willing to go back and try again at some point. Maybe in a year or so. read more

That being said, it's very overpriced for the area and relative to the food quality. $21 for a simple chicken dish? Maybe in NYC with NYC-appropriate food quality expectations, but $21 in Hadley for chicken picatta seems like a bit much. If the food were 50% better, the prices would make more sense. read more

Attire: Dressy - Not really! Ambience: Intimate - Not really! Noise Level: Quiet - Not really! By 7pm we had to shout to be heard. We had a pleasant dinner at Alina's, but it wasn't because the food was "world class". It was not. We had a pleasant evening because we enjoyed each others' company and the wait staff was EXCELLENT. We arrived as the doors were opened, which was a good thing as the crowd descended fairly quickly and the noise level skyrocketed. The food was average at best. We ordered the crab cake appetizer. Each cake was round, and probably similar in size to a golf ball. Three per order. Ours bordered on raw, although they were tasty. Two of us had a pasta dish that was so spicy hot it was difficult to eat - and we like spicy! The scallops in the dish were delicious and cooked to perfection; most of the pasta remained on the plate. We will give Alina's another try, and will order based on experience, with a more careful eye to the menu and more careful questioning of the server. It is worth a second try. Okay all you hungry people, this place is a hidden gem in downtown South Deerfield. If you weren't a regular to South Deerfield, you would likely not be aware of this place. But thanks to yelp, you now are! We have now visited this restaurant 5 or 6 times and after each visit, we've been really excited about our meals. Its a great place to pop into on a week night for a quick bite and/or on the weekend for a nice date. There's a cozy bar or a dining room depending on your preference. They have a decent wine list and there's always good desserts to chose from. My favorite dishes to date are: Spring Risotto and V-ONE Cannelloni. Alina's is possibly one of my new favorites in the area. I'd highly recommend checking it out. read more

This is a hidden treasure, whose combination of food, service and live jazz combo make it the equal of some of Boston's best restaurants. To find this in the middle of sleepy Hadley was a wonderful surprise. The seafood is fresh, the generous slabs of steak are cooked to perfection, and the jazz in the Piano Room makes for a romantic birthday celebrations. Enjoy! read more

I'd heard a lot of great things about this restaurant so I was excited to go. Called ahead and the woman on the phone told us there was another party coming in at 6pm so we would only be allowed to stay for an hour. Already off to a rocky start. As we were seated the waitress made it a point to let us know she was the one who answered the phone and wanted to let us know (again) we would only be allowed to stay for an hour. The meals did not come out until about 5:40pm, which we had no problem waiting for. However we were interrupted again after about 11-12 minutes of eating letting us know the party for 6pm had arrived and we needed to leave. She asked us who wanted to-go boxes and brought the check. We had no intentions of staying late at all, however none of our party had even finished eating. I had never been rushed out of a restaurant so quickly before, I do not think I will ever go back solely after that experience. It was such a shame since I would have really enjoyed the night had we not constantly been reminded we needed to leave. I also think the waitress assumed she could push us around since we were younger (early 20's). Overall would have been a lovely dinner had the service not been so disrespectful. read more

Just ate here for the first time, greeted by the Hostess and made to sit at the bar because of our attire, we are construction workers who travel extensively throughout New England, asked for bread at the bar and our plates were served to us as if we were playing a hand of cards? This restaurant is by far the best in the area. The owners are so accommodating and honestly strive to make their costumers happy. The pasta dishes, specifically the alfredo ones, have the most rich, intricate flavors that I have ever tasted. The steak is amazing quality and again, the sauces that accompany them are incredible. The service is wonderful, and so is the good. My family has traveled all around the world and this is easily our favorite spot around. I would recommend it to anyone. read more

I came here with my mother ( reviewed below), my 3 children, my sister, my husband and extended family and we all received top notch service. The scallops were indeed delicious & I will second that the steak with a gorgonzola topping was one of the Top 5 steak's I've ever tasted. Going back, I tried a variation of calamari & linguini with shrimp which was great. Compared to our norm, I found a $35.00 bottle of wine very reasonable. Definitely will come back! read more

This is our favorite special occasion restaurant. The food is lovely. I had a lobster ravioli there that I still think about. The lobster filled ravioli were amazing and the sauce was full of big chunks of tender lobster as well. We also had some braised beef that was divine. Last time we went we did an all appetizer meal and loved all but one of the 6 we tried. The space is romantic and elegant without being stuffy or pretentious. It is a family business owned by a husband and wife team. The husband is the chef and his wife runs the front of house. They and the rest of the staff are sweet and charming and this creates an environment full of warmth. The service is consistently very good as is the food. read more

Those two stars seem so forlorn up there. To be clear, I've only gone to Alina's once and that was because my husband's boss gave him a (generous) gift card for the restaurant. We have a toddler, so a free meal out while we left the kiddo with a friend is worth 4 stars at least, yeah? And truly, we had a lovely time. It's just that the food was, really, like the Yelp caption says, "Meh". Gummy gnocchi (though with a tasty sauce); grey, sad, under-seasoned swordfish; portabella "carpaccio" that was just maddening.......all in a very old-school Italian-decor setting but without the charms of such........it's making me blue just thinking about it. Decided to use our Fine Dining gift card for this location. Both meals ordered were very good, atmosphere was nice, and staff were pleasant. It was very crowded, so i highly recommend making reservations. Given the size of the place and the piano they have in the room, the room is a bit loud, but otherwise nice ambiance. I'd like to give a special thank you to the manager working that night (Friday 2/22). The Fine Dining gift card didn't actually work as a gift card (fault of the Fine Dining company), but the manager was very patient working through the issue and made a special effort to ensure we were happy.
