He called me back within 30 minutes after I left a message for him and came by a couple hours later to pick up my 40-year-old sewing machine, which had 3 problems and had become unusable. He called me back a few hours later to tell me that he resolved all the problems and he returned the machine to me the next morning. I know almost nothing about sewing machines and my machine stopped working. I called up Mr. Ruiz on a Sunday night and he asked me a bunch of questions and talked me through a few things that could be the problem. Johnny is wonderful! A kind and responsible gentleman who is knowledgeable, not only in sewing machine equipment and repairs, but in the actual sewing craft. My 35-year-old Singer stopped working in the midst of a project. Johnny quickly assessed the machine and needed repairs, which were quite unique and challenging. Because the work would be costly (labor intensive) and may not be reliable over time, Johnny honestly advised that, though it would be my decision, it would not be worth the repairs. He offered several alternate models, all refurbished and in good working condition; he took the time to ensure I understood the differences and answered all of my questions. I opted for his best recommendation, a model similar to my original Singer which I am accustomed to using. Johnny didn't charge me for his time working on my original machine and he sold me a "new" Singer at a very reasonable price, which is working great! I had machine serviced from Sew Much More. They charged $90, told me my machine was not really worth servicing, kept it a month and returned it with the tension set so far off it was unusable. Then I called All City Sewing Machine. Johnny offered to coach me through setting the tension over the phone, but was willing to pick up the machine the next day- I actually sent two of mine with him. He charged less, delivered them both to my door the next day. The tension is perfect and the stitch is beautiful. He even threw in some extra needles. All City Sewing Machine really is as good as it gets- better than you can imagine. read more

Mr. Ruiz is the sweetest and took care of me in one afternoon. I had a 60 year old Singer Stylist and it was irreparable without spending a fortune due to years of sitting unused and broken, which was sad for me as it was my grandmother's. Mr. Ruiz happened to have one the same model as my Grandmother's that someone had donated him and he sold it to me for the cost of repairs (less than $100!!!). I just called based on the other yelp review since my machine was giving me some trouble... the gentleman walked me through several steps over the phone to troubleshoot and got my machine working perfectly! I found a 1950s Singer in San Marcos, brought it over to him and he had it back to me the next day in pristine shape! I inherited a 1950's singer with some issues that I tried correcting myself, but just didn't have the skill set. I called Johnny, he met me in North Austin and picked up my machine. Completely, 100% positive experience - This is who to call if you are seeking (a) to buy a good-quality re-conditioned sewing machine (the long-life kind, made before everything became made of plastic), (b) advice on a used sewing machine before you purchase one, or (c) service or repair for your existing machine. If you don't live in Austin, it's worth the drive. I called Mr. Ruiz after seeing all 5-star reviews on Yelp. I'm a novice with sewing and purchased a used Necchi 3205FA on eBay for my daughter who had recently learned to sew on the same machine (taught by a friend). When I first called, he asked lots of questions about the machine and said if I'd called him before I bought it, he could have advised me on it (first good sign). I met him in a church parking lot the next day since he was picking up a machine from someone else already. He serviced the machine and had it ready for pick-up the same afternoon. He also confirmed that the machine was a really good one, and that despite an apparent replacement part that was not original to the manufacturer, it was in good working order. Also, when I met him to pick up the machine, we chatted a bit. He is not only an excellent, old-school, experienced and knowledgeable service/repair person but importantly, a very kind human being. What a pleasant surprise to find such a gem when looking for small instrument repair. As of a few days ago, he has a re-conditioned machine available for ~$85. Based on this experience, his word is worth more than any warranty. read more
