The "new" capacitor Bob "gave" me in place of the factory-issued one he stole.
    Joshua K.

Bob is an incompetent crook who stole a part of my HVAC. When my air conditioning broke the night before July 4, I sent several requests on Yelp. Bob responded promptly and showed up the following morning. At the time, my system had started working again, but I thought someone should look at it. After viewing the condenser, Bob assured me that the issue was I needed a new "capacitor," which would be $200. I said ok, and he installed it. After he did, the air conditioning stopped working all together. When I asked him about error messages on my thermostat, he said he doesn't know anything about Carrier units (the top selling HVAC in the country!). After admitting he didn't fix it, Bob told me that he wouldn't charge me and that "at least I got a free capacitor." The next day a professional from a legitimate company came over. When I mentioned the new capacitor, he told me that the one Bob installed was used, broken, and rusted out. The issue was the motor, but now I needed to pay for a new motor AND a new capacitor. To add insult to injury, Bob got black soot all over my windowsill and door. DO NOT USE THIS GUY. Also note that some of his over-the-top five-star reviews are from people outside of the DC area, which is very suspicious.

    AC Unit

Bob is terrific. He's responsive, efficient and gets the job done quickly at a very fair price. He showed up for the appointment at my townhouse in Capitol Hill 10 minutes early and he replaced my furnace and AC unit for literally half of what Michael & Son's wanted to charge me. He also connected a Nest so I could control the temperature from my phone. Everything is working great. I am an attorney and always do my due diligence before hiring a contractor. I received multiple quotes, talked with multiple contractors and Bob was the best. Save yourself some time googling various companies and just hire Bob. He's absolutely no-nonsense.

The main problem and downside is that they are very expensive and overcharge. Despite the Yelp page saying that the company provides a "free estimate", I was quoted $49 for the technician to travel. In addition, if I had not chosen to go ahead with the repair, the company would have charged me an additional $150 diagnostic fee. Essentially, despite the yelp profile stating a "free estimate", it will cost you closer to $200 to get a quote. I see this as false advertisement. In addition, when the technician concluded that the problem was the capacitor, I received a final quote of $600. When I googled the price of the same capacitor online, the price range was in between 75$ - 150$. Essentially, they are charging a premium of at least $450 per replacement for a single part (capacitor). Despite their professionalism and quality work, I do not recommend this company for the reasons stated above. If price is not a concern for you, and you would rather pay twice the market value for a job then you should definitely choose them. EDIT: I actually googled the price of a capacitor and offered to buy my own. I was told that by the technician that if I purchased my own capacitor that the company would not install it. In conclusion, they did not address any of my concerns. Unfortunately, after reading the other bad reviews, there seems to be a consistent pattern of discrepancies between what they tell customers and what they instruct technicians to say on site. Making an honest living is so much more rewarding than making it dishonest living.

At the initial visit, the technician/owner diagnosed the tank as rusted and leaking from the bottom and said it needed to be replaced. Champion quoted me $3,250 for the replacement and scheduled it for Tuesday. At the emergency visit, the gas to the heater was shut off, but the water supply to the leaking tank was not isolated. The heater kept dripping and wetting the carpet outside the closet. I called the owner, Gus, because I was trying to understand why the water had not also been shut off and how my tenants were supposed to safely use the plumbing while waiting for the replacement. My tone during that call was information collecting, not accusatory. I was trying to understand what had been done, why the tank was still leaking, and how to minimize additional damage. Gus became defensive and told me, "I never told you I turned the water off." I was not blaming him. I was asking a pretty basic question about an active leak. It was Labor Day weekend and during that call it sounded like he was at some type of social event and did not really want to be bothered. I understand it was a holiday weekend, but I had paid $200 for an emergency visit and was dealing with an active leak at a rental property less than 24 hr after the visit. At the end of the call he abruptly hung up, and right before it disconnected I heard him say, "fucking people." The replacement was still scheduled for Tuesday. He knew I had three tenants in the property and that they effectively could not use the water at all because running water was making the leak worse. Tuesday came and the scheduled arrival time passed with no one showing up and no communication. I reached out asking for an ETA. Only then was I told they were fully booked and had to "pass on the opportunity." No rescheduled time was offered. When I later followed up with Gus through Yelp asking why they no showed and why he could not even give me another appointment time, his response was, "that's on you my man I don't deal with rude people." I completely disagree with that characterization. My tone had been focused on gathering information about the leak and how to manage it safely, not accusing him or his company of anything. If he decided after our phone call that he did not want the job, that is fine, but the professional thing to do would have been to tell me before the scheduled appointment. Instead, they just did not show up and I had to reach out after the appointment time had already passed. To their credit, they did refund the $200 emergency service fee. I had to find another company to do the replacement. Unfortunately they could not do it until Friday, so my three tenants were left without usable water for several more days. That company also only charged about $2,600 for the replacement compared with Champion's $3,250 quote. After all of this I went back and read the negative reviews more closely and wish I had done that first. There are multiple reviews describing similar experiences with the owner becoming defensive or offended when customers ask questions or raise concerns. After my own experience, those reviews made a lot more sense. They did correctly diagnose the failed water heater and they refunded the emergency fee, but the way everything was handled after that was unacceptable. Scheduling an urgent replacement, not showing up, not giving any advance notice, knowing three tenants were without water, then telling me "that's on you my man I don't deal with rude people" because I asked questions about an active leak is not how I would expect a professional company to operate. I would not use them again.

After an 8 p.m. call on Thursday, a technician was at our door by noon the next day. Unfortunately, we discovered that the compressor in our system was completely gone. Mr. McMurray came out shortly afterward to size a replacement, and the new system was fully installed, up and running by 3 p.m. Monday. And this was no straightforward installation--it was a top-floor unit in a condo building. Throughout the entire process, Mr. McMurray went above and beyond. In addition to getting cold air back into our apartment, he patiently answered all of my questions, explained the process from start to finish, shared advice on how to better maintain our system, and worked directly with our building manager to ensure everything went smoothly. As an added bonus, replacing the old system gave us the opportunity to upgrade to a much more energy-efficient unit. We've already noticed an impressive difference: our energy usage is lower despite the heat wave, and the air in the apartment feels fresher than it ever has before. If you're looking for high-quality, good-value service from a company that genuinely cares about delivering excellent customer service and stellar workmanship, I can't recommend McMurray Heating and AC highly enough.
