Best tasting sub I've had in quite some time! This is a no nonsense lunch counter with limited seating. Lots of choices for hot or cold subs. My cold roast beef sub was served on pipping hot bread and was soo delicious with provolone, lettuce, tomato and mayo. With chips and a ice cold beverage from their fridge, it was $10. For the price combined with the quality of what you're given, I give Al's 5 stars. I have consistently had good subs here...I generally get the chicken salad, but have also had the Lady Cafe and one of their hot subs (the one with pesto chicken...can't recall the name) - all are very good...and for $4.50 for a small (which is enough for one person trust me) - who can beat that? Line to the right is for cold subs and line to the left is for hot. At the least, have that decided before you walk in the door! We came on a Saturday, right when they opened so can't speak to how quick the line moves but the guys were friendly and efficient. I had the Al's Special with prosciutto, basil, mozzarella, and tomato and the boy had the chicken salad with lettuce and tomato. Boy, the smalls were a hefty sandwich (10", perhaps a foot long?) so I can't fathom how a large would look like. I thought Al's Special was fine, nothing special despite the name and definately not a huge fan of the bread they use. The subs here are ridiculous. Know what you want, take your sandwich, pay & go. Things move fast here so please do not expect a leisurely experience & get out the way. If you want a good sub at a great value this is your spot. If I could offer one critique? Keep the bread in the oven 30 more seconds-- needs a little "browning" to prevent the bread from being gummy. Best place for a lunch break sandwich. Their sandwiches are HUGE, absurdly cheap, and packed full of delicious ingredients. Even when it is packed (which is most of the time) your food is ready almost instantaneously. Usually if I have a longer day at work I order a small sandwich for lunch and eat the other half for dinner because there is so much food! Excellent value here and the subs are tasty. Solid ingredients and you can get a large with chips and a drink for under $10. Beware if you don't like a big lunch...the large size is definitely a lot of food. Chicken Salad or Steak and Cheese are my favorites. Try to get your food early as it gets wildly packed at peak times. It doesn't bother me as they have an army cooking and taking orders here. WOW. I had to come into the area for work and I was roaming around for a quick lunch. One of my coworkers had suggested grabbing a sandwich from this place. While walking over, I saw the longest line ever...way out the door! I said to my coworker...."uhhh you sure?" However, this line moves quick! Not more than a minute later, it was my turn to order. I was pretty hungry and was debating whether I should get a small or a large. My coworker ensures me that I should get a small. I had originally thought that he said this due to the fact that I am pretty petite, but no...this sub was about 12-inches and was about the same size as subway's foot long. And it only costs $5.50! It definitely tastes better than the subway's foot long though! I ended up ordering the "Oven Roasted Turkey" and it was very tasty and I went back a few other times for this. The Chicken Parm was also delicious if you are looking for a hot sandwich. As mentioned previously, I was super hungry and devoured the entire sub :-) So if you work around the area, this is a great stop to pick up lunch. I don't think there's a single bad thing I could say about Al's (except that they aren't open 24/7 but that might be asking a little much) which is why I think they are one of the few places that warrant a 5 star rating: quick service, most competitive prices in downtown Boston, yet still delivers a great sub. The rolls are fresh and all the subs are good however, a few of my regulars are, the chicken salad (I don't even typically eat chicken salad), the eggplant parm and the chicken parm. read more

Al's has very tasty, HUGE, subs for prices that cannot be beat. The bread is probably the best part of the sub, warm and crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. My favorite sub from Al's is their chicken salad. It's nothing fancy, just a basic chicken salad with mayo and seasoning but its DELICIOUS. They also have a solid Italian sub. It could be filled a little bit more with meat, but since the sub is so large you don't really miss not having an inch of meat in the sub. The large's are almost impossible to eat by yourself, you probably won't be able to move afterwards if you do. One of my co-workers and I have been splitting a large sub for lunch lately. It's the perfect size, and since a large is $8, we both pay $4 each for a filling and tasty lunch. I would definitely recommend Al's for subs if you are ever in the Faneuil hall area. An additional note, if you don't know what you want stand back away from the counter until you figure it out. Al's gets busy and they like to keep the lines moving. Most people pretty much know what they want, so your best bet is to get out of the way until you figure it out. read more

First off - the sandwiches are good and the prices cannot be beat. Also I have seen how huge the lunch rush is and how hard everyone works to keep the lines moving. Now my complaint - some of us eat after the lunch rush (after 2PM). When I go in, everyone working is no longer into working (except maybe cleaning). Getting someone's attention to take your order is not prompt. Getting the cashier's attention to pay is not prompt. Everyone behind the counter is having a good old time and no longer cares about the customer. This needs to change. The owner needs to not distract the cashier about the drawer - let me pay first and acknowledge me waiting to pay. The person with the pink hair seems to be distracting everyone and makes me the customer feel like I don't matter - at least defintely not a priority until she stops chattering. The lunch rush is over but I am still looking for fast service too. My time is valuable to me as well. I hope someone from the restaurant reads this and makes an effort to improve the customer experience after the lunch rush. read more

The prices and quantity at Al's are unparalleled in the Financial District, but for me the thing I love most about Al's is that they know how to move a line. I get half an hour for lunch and everywhere in the area is jam packed during the lunch rush. Even when the line is almost out the door at Al's you will get your food quickly. Al's employees are not afraid to let you knowif you are holding up the line or making others wait needlessly, and for that I am eternally grateful. The food is great, particularly their Chicken Salad. I'm only not giving this place 5 stars because I take my hoagies very seriously and unfortunately, I don't think their Italian, the standard measure of hoagies, is quite good enough to be considered elite. Regardless, the price and no-bullshit attitude make this place a very strong reccomendation. read more

Word of advice, if heading there during lunch hours be prepared for craziness because its that popular around the financial district are there. If you're a newbie to Al's, there are two lines (Hot subs on the left, Cold subs on the right). If you don't know what you're getting, stand toward the back and make a decision! Don't hesitate or get finicky when you have your order being taken or you will get yelled at! Lastly speak loudly if during busy hours because it gets noisy. So impressed! I recently had the prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, basil, plum tomatoes sandwich with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. $7 for a "small" that I would categorize as a large. The chicken salad (best with provolone, onion, and tomato, says I) is a dream, a miracle, a revelation. In a word, it's good, and certainly worth the crowd and testy service. Whether or not Al's is worth classic status is another matter. The steak and cheese is nice enough. The roast beef or State Street are worth a try, though they're only on par with other sandwiches in the area. The bread is soft and best when warm; it's definitely the star of the show. The vegetables are shockingly fresh and alone put it leaps and bounds beyond the Quizways of the world. This place is a great deal for lunch, I work right across the street so it's an easy choice when you're not sure what to get. I always opt for the "bag lunch" which is a decent sized sub, bag of chips and big 20oz bottle of soda for $5.75, I haven't found a better deal. The cafe special with prosuitto (sp?) fresh mozzarella, basil, tomatoes, and balsamic is my favorite. Everyone in there is super nice too, even if the line looks long it always goes really fast so don't be scared away if you go right at lunch time. Ok, well, I just started working downtown, and I decided to give this hot spot a try. I ordered the eggplant parm. It was not good. It was huge, yes. But good...no. It was a big mushy mess, actually. The batter on the eggplant was just mushy. The bread was outstanding, but i threw most of it away. It certainly was cheap, but I felt like I got what I paid for. This is by far my new favorite sub place! I really wish I lived near this because I will truly miss how good this tastes. I tried their chicken salad sandwich and I was in love! It is known for being the "best chicken salad in Boston" and believe me it surpassed that by far. Not only did it taste fantastic it is such a great value. My suggestion is if your there with others that wouldn't mind sharing the same sandwich you buy get the large because the small is half the size and only $2 less. Their service is amazing I went there during "lunch rush hour", and it's amazing how well they can prepare great food so fast. Another suggestion if you don't like tons of people by you try not to go during "lunch rush hour" because it gets pretty crazy in there and can get crowded. Another thing is they don't have much seating, so maybe plan on not sitting in there. Overall this place is fantastic on a new level, I'm glad I got this experience. The bread, ohhh the bread at this place is their secret ingredient. A flaky and crunchy bread that melts in your mouth with each bite. Not to mention the mayo, which tastes homeade.
