Perfect spot for a special night out! I have so many great things to say about this place. First, the atmosphere is so romantic!! You can really tell that a lot of love went into the creation of this restaurant. Everything from the open wood-fire grill to the custom silverware is thought out and beautifully executed. The atmosphere truly transports you somewhere special. Next, the food! Everything I tried I loved. The appetizers were a great start, especially the Chipa, which is a cheesy bread, and the OG Empanada (ofc). The Asado banderita and rib eye are a must try if you like steak and the peppers and Potato "rescoldo" style stole the show for me personally. The Ode to DDL - "A la minute", which includes dulce de lecha soufflé and ice cream, was the perfect finish to the all around great meal and perfect for my sweet tooth. Also the drinks were spectacular. I had the Mazamorra and my partner got the Alta Lemonade, both N/A and both so good. Finally, the staff. Everyone was so warm, attentive, and knowledgeable about the Argentinian culture and food they serve. The head chef and head of house know what they are doing. This is somewhere you take someone when you really want to impress. Sure it's a bit pricey but if you appreciate quality and technique, it's so worth it. I highly recommend. read more

Went here for my birthday and boy am glad we did! If you want the most incredible curated menu then this is your place. Everything is above and beyond amazing. Caryn Adam (one of the lovely owners) has put together an incredible staff! Like a well orchestrated machine, everyone works together and everyone knows the menu and gives you recommendations. You can tell they are happy to be there and they take pride in their job and they love it there. The ambiance is beautiful. From the beautiful plates and bar-wear to the plating of the food. Everything is curated beautifully. The food is inventive and like nothing you have ever had before. This restaurant is not inexpensive to say the least but everything is worth it. Had an amazing time!! We got a free tastings of their wine vermouths, they were delicious I ended up finding the bottle online and buying the rojo vermouth. Anyways the food was interesting and delicious. Yes it was a little pricey but for the man hours placed into cooking the dishes I think it was worth the value. We got the second bread option that came in layers, it was really good. Then the empanadas were good, very moist meat concoction inside. We got the pork which was moist and juicy even though it didn't come with a sauce. And paired it with the peppers which were delicious. It was a great experience and worth trying. If they do the vermouth and empanada tasting event at the restaurant, I will def want to go. read more

I was really excited to try this new restaurant in the area, but unfortunately left feeling underwhelmed. The evening started with a complimentary cocktail, which was a nice touch and was delicious. While I don't mind paying for quality food and a great experience, the portions felt quite small for the price. For example, the bread was $17 for a single, small piece. My partner and I also shared the ribeye steak, which was unfortunately bland (even with hollandaise sauce on top) and quite fatty. At $75, it was not a good cut of meat. We mentioned that the ribeye was bland and fatty to our server, who said he would pass the feedback along to the chef. On a brighter note, I did enjoy the Crudo Criollo. The cocktails were good, and the interior has a chic vibe. Still, I don't see this being a spot I'd return to regularly for dinner. I could see myself coming back for drinks at the bar, but overall the food and pricing didn't quite live up to expectations--especially for the valley. read more

The hostess, Paula, was extremely uncaring. The only reason I chose to sit outside was because of the heater next to the table--she knew this, as I specifically asked her about the heater and switched from an indoor table to an outdoor one because of it. The moment we sat down, the heater stopped working. She didn't seem to care at all. I had to ask someone else for help, and they tried to replace it with another heater, but she wouldn't allow them to. I eventually had to approach her directly and then ask multiple other staff members before they finally switched it. Five minutes later, that second heater also stopped working. Not once did she check on us or acknowledge that two heaters had failed and we were sitting there cold. On top of that, four of us were left hungry because the jidori chicken was undercooked--still bloody--and the pork had a bad smell. We spent over $500 for four people and still had to go home hungry. This was by far the worst restaurant experience we've had in years. To make matters worse, the restaurant charges a 4% "employee health fee." At such high prices, plus a tip of more than 20%, it's unreasonable to expect customers to pay for the staff's insurance on top of everything else. The restaurant should cover their employees' insurance--not pass that cost on to diners. read more

Live fire cooking has gotten pretty trendy, but I can't think of another restaurant that comes near Alto's execution of it. The food is extraordinary--perfectly blistered but never burnt, insanely flavorful, traditional without being old-fashioned. And the service is world-class. Living in the neighborhood, I was really excited for this place to open last year. Unfortunately, the meals have been increasingly lackluster through the months and things seem to be going downhill. My disappointment only deepened when my husband and I popped into their nice lounge area for a couple of cocktails on a Saturday night. I don't mind paying $30 for a margarita (which was delicious btw), but the ambiance better be great as well. Instead, we sat at an empty bar next to a couple of overly intoxicated guests who were being fed free drinks by the bartender, who was obviously their buddy. Not a big deal, but again - when you're paying for a premium cocktail experience - it just doesn't cut it. We also heard servers coming to the bar to complain about their guests in the dining room, which lowered the experience even further. We were prepared to order a few more drinks, but after about 15 minutes of bad vibes we'd had enough and continued our night elsewhere. And seeing as how empty the dining room was on a Saturday night, we were not alone in our thinking. read more

We enjoyed the layered bread and cheese bread appetizers, the empanada was delicious, the short rib was very tasty, the $93 rib eye should have been amazing for the price (and seemed smaller than 16 oz). The problem was the service, which was slow and uneven. After finishing cocktails, our server never returned during dinner to offer any additional drinks or wine, which would have been nice with dinner. In fact, he never checked on us after the dinner was served at all. Coffee orders also came late, after we had finished dessert already. They also failed to bring serving utensils and plates for shared dishes. I'm not sure if the issue was that they were understaffed or just unorganized, but service was pretty lacking and took away from the overall experience. read more

I dine out a lot at highly rated restaurants & I will just say that the $93 rib eye "special" was subpar at best which was a real shocker considering they are a self described open fire - South American pampas restaurant. I have had authentic Argentinian grilled meats cooked on open fire & this did NOT take me there. It was served tepid, savorless, tough & overcooked. They indicated that they only serve it med rare & it still came over cooked. The waitstaff also agreed it was overcooked, said they would mention it to the chef but they did nothing to make it right. The other items prior were better thankfully, but when you are paying TOP dollar for a meal & the supposed star of the night is a dud, it's a real bummer. I haven't reviewed anything since like 2011, but the sheer disappointment prompted me to write this. And while I'm not a food critic by profession, without flexing where I've been in the world and what I've eaten over the last 15 years, let me just say, I know food. It seemed like the focus of this restaurant was everywhere else but the food. Decor, great. Drinks, great. Friendly servers, sure. The cute little leather side saddles for the CC machines, okay, nice touch. But the blandness of the food was on a level that truly left me confused. It didn't seem possible that someone didn't taste the oysters and go "wow this needs a lot more." And for a restaurant that draws inspiration from Argentina and Uruguay--cuisine that is known for rich flavor--patrons will expect just that. Believe me, diners will forget the little decorative rocks the oysters were served on, but they'll never forget the oyster. And you can't have patrons thinking the studio city farmers market empanada guy has a leg up on your $20 empanada. I'm mindful that this is a new restaurant and that there are growing pains when it comes to the speed of service, kitchen coordination etc, but, what comes out of the kitchen needs to be a hit from day one because that is not the first time that dish has been prepared. And presumably, the dish and recipe would have been taste tested several times long before opening. It does not make sense to put out bland food 4 months into a Ventura blvd opening. While issues with infrastructure and logistics are common with a new restaurant, there is truly no worse feeling than paying hundreds of dollars for food that leaves you unsatisfied, and plainly, bamboozled. And if I do return, it will only be for a cocktail and the bread. read more

It was sticker shock and I am someone who eats at nice places and spends money eating. The cocktails were absolutely delicious . The food very was disappointing in terms of portions. They mentioned everything was shareable and I disagree. The bread course was the size of a mini pancake, there was nothing to share honestly. It's too small for even one person. We ordered multiple bread courses and every person had a small bite, at $12 per slice it's pricey. The salad was small at $25. We had multiple appetizers and the portions for each was small.. Steep! It was a tiny piece of skirt steak. No side, nothing we asked for 1 oz of chimichurri we were charged $5 as the steak had no flavor. .we remained hungry. $300 for two people and 4 tiny dishes . $18 for a teeny portion of bread . We came home and made something to eat . Sadly i don't think this place is going to make it . The neighborhood really needs a high end place like this . But no one will return twice . Worst dining experience I've had. Decided to celebrate my birthday here with 2 other couples. I was excited to try this new restaurant as it was so close to my house. The hostess was friendly and we were seated in front of the open kitchen, giving us a great view of the chef cooking. We didn't realize the tables are communal but it didn't bother us to sit with strangers. The wait staff was overwhelmed, which is to be expected by a newly opened restaurant. Unfortunately, the food was bland, lacking in flavor and It came out far to slow. After 2 hours, we had only received appetizers but no main course yet. We didn't complain though & I would've never written a review just for this. However, 20 minutes after ordering his drink, my husband reminded the waiter that he hadn't received it yet. The manager, who was helping him at our table, proceeds to tell my husband, "yeah, I think you guys have had enough drinks" & walks away. The restaurant is very loud so we think maybe we didn't hear her well or that there is some sort of misunderstanding, as we never finished our bottle of wine bc we didn't like it. We didn't complain about it either. Four of us didn't drink it. We had a first round of drinks before that so My husband ended up giving me his drink & ordering a new one for himself. Surely, she thought he was ordering his 3rd drink maybe? I was trying to figure out what the confusion was. I got up to speak to the manager, who proceeded to ignore me and wouldn't even look me in the eyes. It was very surreal. Nobody in our party had ever been cut off from drinking or treated so poorly at a restaurant. Most of us are in the restaurant or hospitality business so we know this is not normal. I asked the manager for the bill & let the chef know we were sorry but we would be leaving, as this was no way to treat customers. The manager returns with a handheld credit card machine & no itemized receipt. I'm not even sure what I paid for. I just wanted to get out if there so badly so I paid the bill. The whole night was frustrating & to top it off It's a very expensive restaurant with small portions so I spent almost $600 and ended up having to finish our meal next door. I can not recommend Alto. The owners need to train their managers correctly so they treat people with respect. read more

Came here for a girls night out and the ambiance and service was excellent. The food 1/5 in my opinion. Prawns and fish were super fishy didn't feel fresh. Meat was super tough, potatoes were weird felt like creams sauce not potato. Bread super small portion for the price. Beets flavor too smokey, avocado salad was way too bitter. For a place so beautiful and staff so wonderful the chef really needs to try their own food otherwise they will never survive for a long time. I was thinking it was just me, but after going through the reviews, here, i can see i'm not alone. Thoroughly underwhelming. Certainly, beautiful space, but it stops at that point. To sit and have two appetizers, one that took close to 30 minutes (1 tiny empanada), and two glasses of wine for over a $100, just not worth it. Plus the fact that not one person came to check on me the entire evening in the front area, until i walked over to the manager/owner? To please get my check. I did let the management know when they asked how my experience was. One seemed like she could care less, and the other seemed to appreciate the feedback. Plus, don't throw a healthcare adder on the bill. Charge more for the food, or pay your employees more. I do hope it improves as the space is lovely. read more

Very cute restaurant, but food was a miss and had an experimental Michelin vibe. Not a place you'd go to get full, or really ever go back to. We ordered: Bread- ONE piece of bread with buckwheat butter per order. I thought it was good; my friend thought it was too heavy. Burnt avocado salad- not particularly tasty Empanada- good, but ONE empanada per order Surf and turf- good, but we were informed at ordering that the price had been increased from what was listed on the menu. Beets- bad Potatoes- not good, not bad. Crisps on top tasted exactly like Ruffles I don't feel like this food will last in the valley. They really need to redo the menu to something people want to go back for. We were also charged a 4% health fee when the check arrived. read more

My wife and I brought her parents to Alto and I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience. Every item, from the moment we were greeted by the hostess, to our last bite of dessert, our experience was absolutely stellar. Our waiter was so comfortable, patient and knowledgable about the entire menu. He had recommendations but was not pushy or salesman like. He seemed to genuinely love what they offered. My wife enjoyed the excellent Alto Negroni while I blissed out to the Jardin de Altura (Tequila Altos, Fig Leaves, Cointreau, Magnolia Nectar & corn salt rim, herb oil floating in drops on the top). This drink was delicate and nuanced and utterly devine! The Chipa (cheese bread) and Criollo (layered wafer bread with herb butter) let us know that we were going to really enjoy everything. We had the OG empanada, Burnt Avocado Salad for starters and the Pork Txuleta, Special Black Cod and Cordero Patagonia (Lamb Saddle) for entree's. Finished with Chocolate Sabayon and a Pistachio special dessert that was just wonderful. I appreciate that they are really aiming to represent South America with their wine list. Even though I don't personally enjoy them, they were interesting to try. Awesome experience, I will definitely be back soon. DOn't miss this place, it's also a great date spot.
