I had a lousy experience with Dyan, a designer/salesperson at Dan's. After making an appointment to…read morelook at fabric samples in their showroom, we were disappointed because we didn't find any appropriate fabrics (end use: upholstery) in the colors of my daughter's room. The man who was on site that day was nice but not helpful. In emailing Dyan later, I wrote that perhaps we should have come when she was there, because she might know the memo books better, and could point us in the right direction to find an upholstery fabric in a lavender or lilac color. Her response was that "Lavender and lilac are not popular in today's fabric industry, but we do have a selection of white upholstery fabrics." First of all, she's wrong. Mills and fabric houses offer plenty of options in lavender, lilac, and other shades of light purple. Just look at Kravet's, Robert Allen's, or any other to-the-trade website. I worked in that industry for 20 years. Second, that wasn't what I asked. I asked for her help, and I was told the color I was seeking wasn't popular and I could try a white fabric. (Of course you have white fabric!) This was not helpful, and to be told that what I was looking for is not popular is borderline rude. Her response put me off so much that I've delayed the project for a year. I'm now beginning the process with another upholstery shop and am reminded of my negative experience with Dyan at Dan's. Maybe if you get a better salesperson, you'll have a better experience. But I'll never recommend Dan's.

I visited this shop yesterday after seeing a canvas listed as "in stock" on their website. I'm…read morenewer to needlepoint and was excited to browse in person, especially since there are only a couple stores in the South Bay/Peninsula. When I asked about a specific canvas, I was told it was not available. I mentioned that the website showed it in stock and had an active add-to-cart option. The response I received was unexpectedly dismissive and in a condescending tone. The woman behind the counter said: "Amazon has trained you to expect things you see online to be in stock," followed by an explanation that their website does not really support online orders, at least not yet. I completely understand that inventory systems and websites don't always match. Had this simply been explained in a straightforward way, I would likely have purchased a different design/kit while I was there. Instead, the interaction felt condescending and uncomfortable enough that I chose not to continue shopping. For a hobby that relies on welcoming and guiding newcomers, tone matters. This was not my first experience with needlepoint, but I can easily see how it could discourage someone just getting started. Because of this experience, I won't be returning. I'd recommend new stitchers seek out another local store where questions are encouraged and customers feel comfortable spending time (and money).
