Glad Fu Lam Mum was closed today otherwise we wouldn't have tried this yummy place across from them. We've always seen this restaurant but never thought to try it out. We were a party of five, celebrating my husband's actual birthday. The bistro tables were meant for 2 but they pushed two tables together and made it work for us. It was very chilly and luckily we bundled up, aside from the heat lamps they provided. The soup was delicious. The right amount of kick and flavor! All our dishes were absolutely delicious. This review is for the Amarin that opened up in the old Hong Kong Bistro location. The service was fine. The guy that I think is the owner was friendly and we chatted for a while. The waitress was fast and friendly. The food was average, but $3.50 for hot water and a tea bag is just way too much. I guess I'll bring my own tea bags or thermos with tea when I go out to eat from now on. Honestly, I don't think I'm going to go out to each much anymore if this is how much it costs. $26 with tax and tip for lunch? Too much for me. Before Covid I would go out to lunch 4-5 times a week. In 2023, I'm only going out 2-3 times and usually to Panda or the Taco trucks on El Camino. Restaurant prices are just too high for me. The places where you get food to go and they spin that iPad around with a tip request also turns me off. Reliably spicy, flavorful food - slightly oily, reasonably priced. My favorites are their Basil fried rice, house special rice, Musammun curry with garlic/ginger rice and of course mango sticky rice! Always been a fan of this place for thai food on Castro. I especially appreciate that fried rice and noodles are actually fried, not just cooked so you get the slight browning. My friend and I had a late lunch on a Saturday in the newer 147 Castro location. We waited awhile for a clean table to be seated. Then we waited some more to order. They seemed understaffed in order to service a full place. The decor in this location is more casual than the traditional eatery across the street. We shared the yellow curry chicken, pork pad thai and brown rice. The pad thai looked different than typical and had big pieces of pork in it. We ordered our yellow curry as mild and it tasted more medium spice. We ordered a bunch of different dishes so it was a good sample of veggie spring rolls, angel wings (so tasty by the way), samosas, pineapple curry, etc. We did arrive just before closing but we scored a table for four super quickly. The patio area was packed which is reminiscent of night markets in Asia. The sauces were also very flavourful. This is definitely one of the best Thai places I have had in a long time. On a Monday night, my party of 2 were seated right away outside. Service isn't that attentive, but I think they're understaffed so take it easy on them! The roti was flaky and good, and I really liked the peanut sauce it came with. A good portion for 2 people. I got the pad see ew with tofu. I like how they always ask if egg is ok/ if I'm vegan! I'm not vegan but I appreciate the option to have it eggless. The serving size was good. It didn't have too much of that pad see ew, kind of sweet/caramelized flavor. It tasted pretty bland. My friend enjoyed her red curry, but I thought it should come with a side of rice since it's $16. A great Thai spot right in the middle of Downtown Mountain View -- it's located right in the middle of the street and had tasty food and fairly quick service. Our party of 6 was seated almost immediately on a Saturday night and the food came out not too long after we ordered. They also have a fun table style in the front. I got the Panang curry with white rice and it was SO tasty! It wasn't too sweet and had a yummy mix of veggies and tofu. The pineapple curry is the best! Never had lychee in curry before, but it added an incredible flavor. However, would not recommend the drunken noodles - no flavor and the noodles were stuck together. The papaya salad was pretty good and so was the roti - the roti does have a lot of butter/is heavy. The green beans with tofu were also pretty great! Would say that the difference between medium and spicy is pretty significant, so be careful when ordering! Nice wooden furniture, peaceful music, dimmed light and nice tableware put it on a level higher than a lot of Thai restaurants in the area. Like many other restaurants around the area, the prices are a little steep-and understandably so because the overhead is just absolutely ridiculous. Amarin is probably some of the better authentic Thai food that I've had in this area. An older gentleman (whom I believe is the owner) walked over to greet us and even made some recommendations. We ordered the Khao Soi with vegetables, which was a coconut curry from North Thailand. It was so flavorful and rich with chunks of kabocha squash and pieces of tofu. We also ordered the spicy basil pork belly, which was super delicious! My caucasian friend was slightly disappointed at the spice level even though he requested it to be a medium-high spice. The owner stated that he would give him a chili sauce on the side instead because he was worried that if the dish was made too spicy, he wouldn't like it. Fair enough. But I think if you like spicy hot, I would kick it up a notch on his level of spiciness. Both the food and service were great. If I was really craving Thai food, I would probably go out of my way for this spot. Parking isn't terrible either as there are parking garages around. This is a review for the new small restaurant on Castro. The food was delicious. The service was very slow, even at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon. It took a while until we got our food. Some people who got in after us had their food well before us. We ordered BBQ beef salad, Spicy Basil fried rice, Boat noodles beef, Crispy Pork belly and Satays. Everything was delicious. The different flavors, were amazing. I would give this restaurant a five star review but because their slow service I am only giving them a 3 star review. As far as the food goes, it's pretty below average Thai food. Flavor-wise it's okay, but I ordered medium spice level curry and it came completely unspicy. The meat was also completely cold in some places. My main gripe is the extremely poor service. I arrived part of a large group, which we informed them in advance, and we weren't sure why they were being so rude to us all. First, one waitress said in a degrading way that she needed to take a table away, which was alright because thankfully our group was smaller than intended. Later, we waited around 45 minutes before they came to ask us our order. After waiting a while for food to come out, someone else started delivering plates but rather than ask who ordered what, they would throw down the plates and slam them against the table. The last straw was when they started yelling at us for supposedly mixing orders up, which was completely unprofessional. You don't outright shout at a customer. I've never experienced worse service at a restaurant, and I suspect it's because 18% gratuity is added on automatically for groups larger than 6 people. Can't pay me to eat here read more

I have been going to Amarin Thai for many years. I want to be fair in this review so I will break out the actual food vs. experience dining. The food: honestly 5/5. I was full, the taste was amazing and they always get my order correct even if I make adjustments. The experience: I usually go mid week for dinner-- I haven't experienced the same "packed place" others have commented on. I can tell you they're not the friendliest place I've been to. I haven't had any specific 'rude' encounters but yes, they're not friendly. They also don't care if your soda is empty unless you ask them to refill it. I do hope they step up their customer service but I do think it's better during the week. Taste wise... again, 5/5 read more

The description on Yelp does not do it justice, it is so bussn. It was egg noodle in a curry sauce, topped with fried noodles. Amarin has to be one of the best Thai restaurants in the Bay Area. I visited on Sunday with my family. The menu had a very nice variety of dishes, some of which I hadn't seen before in other Thai restaurants. All seemed delicious, by their description. I ordered the Khao Soi with chicken. The menu description said it's a soup, which I wasn't too interested about, but after the waiter explained that it wasn't really a soup, but it was served with plenty of curry sauce in the plate, I went for it. I wasn't disappointed. The food tasted great, and I can say it was one of the most flavorful Thai dishes that I have ever experienced. The rest of my party also loved the dishes they ordered. The waiters were all very nice, prompt and accommodating. It was certainly a great dining experience. This restaurant was a great discovery. We'll be regulars at this place from now on! read more

They weren't skimpy. There was less tamarind sauce flavor than I'm used to, but I thought it was a good thing. A squeeze of lime bumped it up. Tom Kha - It had enough lime juice to be balanced. I'm not a huge fan of coconut milk. This is an exception when there is enough acidty. Crying Tiger - Can't go wrong with grilled med-rare steak. Grilled Pork Neck - This has a great unique texture.
