We decided to celebrate a friend's birthday at Amaya because it has an amazing outdoor patio and seating. This was our first time and we all loved it! We felt very safe with all the Covid protocols in place. Our favorite starters were the delicious beet salad with goat cheese and a touch of wasabi, scallops cooked perfectly and steak tartare with quail eggs. The main courses also did not disappoint, especially the sea bass. All the desserts were a hit, we loved the creme brûlée and homemade gelato. We had a lovely evening dining al fresco at Amaya. We arrived early for our reservations, before the restaurant opened. I was HANGRY after swimming all afternoon and walking around the property for 1 hour. I was super cranky when a nice gentleman came out to inform us the restaurant would be closed for 30 more minutes. I did not take the news well, and my hubby strongly insisted I go back to our hotel room and eat a snack. When I returned, the super nice gentleman had brought a snack tray from another restaurant for us to snack on before Amaya opened. What superb service!!! (This was not even our server for dinner.) When Amaya opened for dinner, we kept our same table and were greeted by our warm and excellent server, Macy. She made our dinner relaxed, intimate and wonderful. We went with several of her suggestions. The shrimp pizza. This pizza is personal sized. It was tasty, and my least favorite dish of the evening. It was good, but I would skip it next time. The scallops (Macy's favorite dish) were FANTASTIC! MMMMmmmmmm =) Dover scallops perfectly seared, served with a delicious woody, mushroom mix, and pork belly. There was a copious amount of delectable sauce. I love sauce. This was my favorite dish of the evening! The pasta with tomato sauce (I cannot remember the exact name). We switched gears and went with the pasta. It was a bit chewy for my liking, but my hubby loved the texture. The sauce, however, was exactly to my liking. Again, there was tons of sauce and the sauce was fantastic. I would order the pasta again. Be aware it is very al dente. My hubby needed to head to the spa, and we were both stuffed so we skipped dessert. This restaurant is pretty fab. We stayed at the Fairmont for two days and ate breakfast and dinner at Amaya, both days -- everything we ordered was exquisite. For breakfast, the Grand Mar Mimosas were really good and the Huevos Rancheros were excellent. There's a really nice patio you can sit on outside with great views and a fire pit. For dinner, we highly recommend the Scallop appetizer and for a main dish don't miss the Squid-Ink Pasta Carbonara; we love Italian food and have eaten in some of the best Italian restaurants in the world (including in NYC, LA, Italy and London) and this was definitely the best Carbonara we've ever had. read more

Went for a weekday early lunch with a friend to celebrate a birthday. It was deserted! I had to questioned whether they were open yet. They were, but just empty. Nadja took us under her wing and showed us her favorite table with a beautiful view. She and the rest of the staff were wonderful, the food was good and cocktails were great! The specialty drinks we ordered were some of the most perfectly crafted, balanced and creative I've had in a long time (which I know will depend on the bartender on shift). I had the iberico ham and manchego grilled sandwich and my friend got the Cobb, which was beautiful. I'm not a sweets person but my friends toasted banana bread with a ice cream was the BOMB. This place really is something else. I picked a winner when I chose Amaya as one of our picks for Restaurant Week. We went out 5 nights to participating restaurants, and they were by far the best spot. There was a little mix up, when I used the online reservation system on the Open Table. They scheduled it for the night before, and when we arrived, they had trouble finding it. Finally they found it, informed us that somehow it was in their books for the night before, but still told us they would squeeze us in. We grabbed a drink at their bar and took in the gorgeous ambience that was all around us. We got all fancy, because we knew Amaya was top notch. I had the beet salad as the started, and the cedar smoked salmon as the main course. The salmon just melted in my mouth, and had the most aromatic flavor to it. They had a mule as one of their specialty drinks, and it was really refreshing. Every single thing about our night was top notch. The host, albeit a bit stiff, quickly hooked me up w/ a complimentary newspaper of my choice, seated me straight away and never gave me the "oh, just one?" line that some other restaurants do when you're dining solo. The server enthusiastically suggested only one thing: the buttermilk pancakes. "You'll absolutely love them!" he emphatically declared. So I reluctantly got them (b/c junk carbs = bad! boo) with a side of pork sausage links. Yup, he was right... the absolutely best pancakes I've ever had, so rich & full in taste yet fluffy & ethereal in texture, plus the light GBD factor (golden brown & delicious) was even throughout the surface of the pancake, no burnt edges, just bang on perfection. The pork sausage was incredible, too, just spicy enough w/ a proper snap of the casing, delish when drizzled w/ the slightest trail of syrup. I'm 4 years late on this review, but nonetheless, it still needs an homage for being such an amazing restaurant. I never knew this restaurant existed until I was working as a nurse in one of the villas at the Grand Del Mar back in 2010. When it was lunch or dinner break, my supervisor would send us nurses to have dinner or lunch here at Amaya, all charged to her villa. Amaya has outdoor seating and the view of the garden outside is absolutely stunning, the patio is a nice balance of shade and sun on a gorgeous day (which, in Del Mar, it's always a gorgeous day!) I'm sure the menu has changed a lot but I can say that the charcuterie plate we used to share never fails for an appetizer to share. I also had their broccoli soup and it was out of this world! Also, the pork chops and the rib-eye are both great choices! This is a wonderful restaurant and the service is impeccable. Don't feel intimidated by pulling up your car to the valet and parked up next to the ferraris, just know that you're there for the food and people are very nice! read more

I've been on the Grand Del Mar property a few times and had never had a chance to stop in for a quick bite at Amaya. After a recent North County Shopping outing, we decided to come by for Lunch. It was a Sunday afternoon around 3PM, and only a few tables were seated. We were offered a limited menu, as it was too early for dinner and too late for Brunch. It was a little disappointing because there were only 5 main course options:: A Crab and Corn Pasta, Turkey Burger, Grand Burger, Gourmet Grilled Cheese, and Rotisserie Chicken. My party of 4 ordered our meals and we waited over 30 minutes for our plates to come out. Another party of 2 that came well after us, got their entire meal before we did. We nibbled on a couple baskets of their Pretzel Rolls. They were pretty good, but we were famished and were annoyed that we were waiting forever. Our 2 soup orders came out with the second basket of rolls. Although the French Onion soup special of the day was tasty, it was tiny, and a rip off at $9. When our food did finally come out, one of the burgers was not prepared properly. They apologized for the screw up, sent out a new burger, and comped it on the bill. The manager, Nick, stopped by our table a couple more times just to check in on us, which is nice, but it shouldn't have been because of a kitchen screw up. The atmosphere is really beautiful here. Patio seating was really nice. A wedding was being set up in the courtyard area across form the Patio dining area. The grounds are gorgeous. Just spending the afternoon walking around here is nice. Would I eat here again? Yes, but only if I was already on the grounds. I wouldn't make a special trip out here to try a $16 burger off a lunch menu that wasn't that great. read more

I happened to be in San Diego today and the fiance had told me to pick lunch. I really couldn't think where, but I knew I had to go to the Grand Del Mar to look at their suites. So I thought to try lunch here as it got good reviews. We were asked if we wanted to be seated inside or outside. It was a nice sunny day so I chose outside. It was a beautiful treat to eat lunch outside. If you have never been to the Grand Del Mar before, it's my favorite hotel/resort in San Diego (to me at least). Their lunch menu featured starters, sandwiches, and entrees. Sandwiches - 3 options: the grand burger: $14, the turkey and prosciutto paniniL $9, and the reuben sandiwch $12. Entrees ranged from $14-18. They start you off with sun-dried tomato bread with a blue cheese spread and a bowl of olives and peppers. The bread and spread and olives/peppers were rather enjoyable. The fiance ordered the burger and I chose the panini. Excellent choice for me. This was one of the best paninis I have had. It looked small, but with the fresh, just-made chips, it filled me up. It had a sweetness and when i looked into the layer, there was a purple colored marmalade/spread which went excellent with the turkey and salty prosciutto. The fiance said his burger was cooked well and tasted really fresh. It was included avocado and chips. The fiance said it was "too fancy" for him, but I love the Grand Del Mar and all it has to offer so it was fine and perfect for a lunch. I'm interested in trying their other entrees as well. I know I will be back here - great food, great view, great service. And we even came in wearing jeans and they didn't treat us any different from the rest of the 40+ crowd who all came prim and proper. read more

MISSION: Visit every place named Amaya... Well, because my name is Amaya, duh! I spent a nice casual weekend in San Diego and made it a point to come to Amaya. One thing, they dont offer discounts for people named Amaya. They really need to change that policy. Management, if you are reading this.... time for a policy update. Amaya is located in the gorgeous Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego. When you enter the property follow the signs for the villas, thats where Amaya is. There is valet parking at the hotel. Which is free, or they didnt charge me. Either way I didnt pay. Once you walk into the building make a left and go down the stairs. Amaya, as well as the rest of the hotel is decorated beautifully. There is a nice, dark wooded bar area and the reception desk ahead. The main dining room is very spacious as well as the outside patio overlooking the property. Amaya Burger ($19) - ground beef | chipotle mayo | aged cheddar | brioche bun. My burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare temp, really delicious house burger named after moi. Actually, it was a lot of burger now that I think of it. Not one of those expensive small petite burgers. One thing that I loved the most was the taste of the meat. You know that seasoned--grilled taste you can only seem to get at home. Yeah, it tasted like that. I also had 2 glasses of Prosecco and a Muffin. I loved all of it, especially my waiter. Stunning decor and a very beautiful resort. We toured the resort before we went in for dinner. Service was excellent. The bread is really good, especially the pretzel rolls. Appetizer: Beef Carpaccio: beef was really good quality, not overdressed, and just enough capers to bring in a little saltiness to the dish. Corn Chowder: bleh, don't waste your money on this. Main Course: Lamb: well seasoned, cooked to medium rare, and tender. The sauce is just okay, but the meat was cooked perfectly. Crispy Skin Sea Bass: fish was really fresh, and moist. A very clean dish, where all no one flavor overpowers the whole dish. Nice and balanced. Dessert: Concord Grape Ice Cream: Tastes just like grapes! Haha, not too sweet and a little tart, a good way to finish. Creme Brulee: Not too sweet, and it is very smooth. The fruit helps cut the richness of the creme. Atmosphere is extremely nice, wait staff is attentive. Only thing keeping it from being 5 stars is the food. Although everything is good and nicely executed, it didn't make me go "wow! Being it was my first night at the hotel I didn't want to venture off too far so we stayed local. The restaurant and bar had a great ambience. We sat outside with heat lamps which was perfect! Our waiter, Ryan, was awesome! He was a sommelier and knew so much about wine and was able to help us pick a perfect bottle in our price range. The food was good but not 5 star hotel restaurant good. For the price I expected better. We got the margarita pizza for an app and it was nothing special. I expected lots of basil and fresh mozzarella but it was a regular avg pizza. I got the sea bass for my main. The fish was very tastey but came w a side of sausage which was weird and a few potatoes that were tossed in a cold parsley type of sauce. There was a lot of randomness on my plate. My husband got gnocchi which was tastey. Dessert we got 3 scoops of gelato. Let's start with the positives first. They have a beautiful outdoor area that is very welcoming and spacious so it's great for social distancing and makes you feel comfortable. The service is great as well. However the few food we had were either mediocre or just all right. Paying $28 for a sandwich with frozen French fries and an average sandwich seems like a rip off. I don't care paying more for quality product, but the food under delivered, at least for the lunch menu. Not sure how dinner is, but based on the lunch menu it doesn't sound promising. read more

There are very few times that I find a fine dining establishment to be excellent. I worked in the restaurant industry for over 10 years and believe highly in quality of service, food, cleanliness, price and ambiance. This place hit the mark 100% in all of those categories, which is very hard to do. I was highly impressed and fell in love with this place. This was the first time that we've been here and the funny thing is we live less than 3 miles from this place. When we drove in through the gates it felt like we entered into another world. The golf course was to the right, on our drive up to the restaurant, and it was stunning and I don't even golf. It was so green and lush. When we walked inside I felt like I was stepping into a Roman castle. There were huge ivory pillars, gorgeous marble floors, beautiful oil paintings and so much detail in everything. We came to celebrate my birthday and the hostess new right away, from my husband's reservation, and wished me a happy birthday, which was really nice and made me feel special. We sat outside and there was this beautiful courtyard to look at and beautiful trees and architecture. Our server was super personable and never missed a beat. We never had to ask for more water or for our plates to be cleared. All of the staff was amazing! The food was phenomenal! The pricing was not ridiculous either for what you get, I felt like it was fairly priced. I ordered a Sicilian flatbread as a starter, which was ridiculously good! Then I ordered a New York red wine braised steak with garlic mashed potatoes for dinner and almost died and went to heaven. For dessert there was this amazing lemon tart with a real 24k gold flake at the top...say whaaa?! First time eating gold. Of course I paired it with one of my favorite drinks, Jameson on the rocks. The Grand Del Mar is a little off the beaten path, but once you get there, you won't want to leave anyway. Great property, and looks more massive than it actually is. Everything is conveniently located, with the rooms in a sort of zig zag pattern with the rhyme to the reason being that everyone gets a nice view, whether it be the golf course, the canyons, the pool, etc. Amaya is a wonderful restaurant on the 1st floor of the hotel. It serves a wide range of food, with entrees starting around $29. Appetizers and such around the $10 range and sides from $6 and up. I had: Mixed baby greens - delicious and with the right amount of dressing Lobster bisque - nice chunk of lobster claw on there and consistency was smooth and creamy Mushroom risotto - fabulous Yorkshire pudding - good, but I actually prefer the one at Lawry's Pan-fried salmon - great crispy skin and cooked just right. Chef prepares it not cooked all the way through, but I asked for it cooked through. It was perfect. The others at the table who enjoyed the roasted chicken with herb gnocchi (yum) and the halibut, both gave them high ratings. Service was excellent and decor was nice. Hubby and I absolutely loved our breakfast here. Sitting on the patio and enjoying elegant food felt like we were in the middle of Tuscany. Seriously. The place is somehow posh, yet family friendly. In fact, many kids were playing on push toys along the patio, and it wasn't annoying because there was so much room, the food was delectable and it was still quiet despite the kiddie activities. (I have a little one, so I'm not against kids... just saying we were on date mode, not parent mode.) I can imagine gorgeous wedding being held under the arbor across the patio. Our server was impeccable. We shared: + The Proscuitto and Melon appetizer - this seasonally perfect! The proscuitto was exquisite in flavor, not too fatty, and the melon was uber juicy. Crack of pepper and bit of EVOO topped it. + the Crab Benedict - ORDER THIS too! real lump crab meat (not a crab cake!) under a perfectly balanced spicy hollandaise. One of the two best Benedicts I've ever had. The other one was on Lanai at a 5 star resort. +Old Fashioned Waffle with cinnamon cream and roasted pears. Wow. Staying at the Grand an we had a $50 resort credit to use. Having breakfast for 2 easily burns through the credit. Don't come here expecting to be stuffed because you will come away very upset. Portions are quite small that's for sure. What you are paying for is the ambiance, the view and the 5 star service. We ordered Egg white frittata, spinach, tomato, goat cheese; flat iron steak; blueberry muffin, and mango smoothie. For the price all were received in small portions. Nothing special with the breakfast except the mango smoothie. The frittata was ordinary and the goat cheese is an acquired taste. Steak was tender and juicy. Blueberry muffin is a little different in that it had white sugar crystal toppings. The most unique tasting item I ordered was the mango smoothie. It is sweet and rich distinct taste. Though I probably would not buy an $8 12-16 ounce beverage, I enjoyed it. Pros: breathtaking view in the patio, free wifi, impeccable service Cons: just driving to the restaurant you can feel your wallet get thinner, you will still be hungry afterwards Service - 5 Amenities - 5 Ambiance - 5 Parking - 3 Food - 3 Price - 3 I do not think I could reasonably justify returning just for the restaurant, but if I am staying at the hotel and have a resort credit, I would probably try dinner next time. read more

We came here last night for their restaurant week dinner menu and I have to say $65 for a three course meal and a wine pairing, was quite well worth it. I came here for Restaurant Week with my dad, my sister and her boyfriend. The valet guys were a little rude but ok. I got to Amaya. Down the stairs to the right. I was early so I wet to the bar to order a glass of wine. Had to actually tap my fingers on the bar counter to get some attention. Once they noticed me, I ordered the Ridge Zinfandel. Yummy at only $15 a glass. Then we were seated and our waitress was great. The manager Nolan (?) came by a few times to ask how things were. But again, that darn bar service. All the drinks were late except for the wine pairings. So annoying but again Nolan to the rescue. He comped all the non wine pairing drinks. Awesome! Now for the food. Okay the Catalan shrimp in a chile lime broth. Yum. Magnificent. The broth was so delicious I could have had it the rest of the night. I wish it came with a spoon. Spicy and flavorful. Next course the petite filet served on a bed of short ribs. What? A meat lovers feast. I ordered my filet medium and it was cooked perfectly and it melted in my mouth like butter. Delicious. We went for Restaurant Week--3 course for $40. For appetizer, Catalan-Style Shrimp was outstanding--absolutely so tasty, with 6 big juicy shrimp iin a tasty lime and thai chili broth. It came with 3 small slices of baguette. That was five stars. The pork chop was juicy, large, and filling (although I thought it could use a sauce) and was accompanied by a "potato hash" mixture (various vegetables in a stuffing like consistency with some crunch, perhaps croutons) We ordered the beef tenderloin medium rare, but it came medium and my husband thought it was a little too rich. The appricot cake dessert was great with a side of ice cream. We were seated at a big booth where the table was so big that the waiters really have to reach over all the way to deliver or remove your plate. The service was great as far as being prompt in between dishes and our water was always full. Even the water servers knew how the dishes were prepared! The squash soup was Luke warm, palate cleanser a grainy terribly flavored green apple sorbet that resembled the texture of play dough, the portion size of the halibut main was shameful and better suited for a child. Extremely disappointing for the Grand certainly does not deserve a redo for any special occasion. The Grand Del Mar is one of those "special" places where you are whisked away from the busy hustle bustle and can find yourself in the formal dining room or outside on the garden patio eating beautifully prepared food with nary a sound from other diners or the waitstaff. I've been privileged to eat here many times and each time has been a superb experience. Excellent food, attentive staff and no need to rush. Just linger, let the food move you, let the wine sink in and relax every muscle in your body. Whether you are enjoying the tomahawk ribeye for two or the lobster benedict for brunch each are equally rewarding. Is it expensive? Yes, but it's well worth the cost and investment of your precious relaxation time. So go ahead, treat yourself. You deserve it. read more
