First night. Just drove from airport. Time difference confusion we needed to grab dinner earlier than we'd like since it was after 9pm here. Oops. Menu main dishes like bison, which my husband had and loved too authentic for me. I ordered safe appetizers to make my own dinner. Tortilla Soup very different from California light version and I loved it. Thick, spicy, corn mass taste with light cheese and strips of chips on top. Excellent. Corn muffin with chili chunks instead of bread or chips and salsa. Fabulous. We asked for more. No problem. I had crab cake appetizers for dinner. One crab cake on nice bed of healthy green salad. We are nowhere near my Monterey Bay home and the soggy, but tasty, crab cake seemed aware of not being exactly fresh off the boat. Plenty of food. Bread pudding looked delish, but we were full. This was a unique dining experience for our anniversary. Ate dinner in the teepee the salmon was the best I have ever eated ,extremely crispy but cooked perfectly. Pea and arugula salad was excellent . Wait staff was attentive with out being obtrustive. Laurence the manager was so professional, communicated quickly and made us feel pampered. We weren't that hungry so we decided to split a sandwich and a salad for dinner. The Cobb salad had noticeably fresh ingredients and a great blue cheese dressing. The prime rib french dip with the green chile and cheese was the best we've ever had. It was too much food for the two of us. I wish we had been hungrier. The fact that we weren't and yet ate it all was because it was so good. They have an additional menu with Native American cuisine that looked like it might be worth trying. Came here alone on a Saturday night 8PM in February while staying at the hotel. A pair of woman sitting next to me who arrived 20-30 min after I did finished their meals and received quicker service than I did. I was sitting there 1 hour 20 min total for one person to eat. Staff did not acknowledge me for at least 10-15 minutes after I got there. Ordering every course took way too long for waiter to acknowledge me so that I could order. Food was also mediocre. I got chips and salsa $8. Carne Asada quesadilla $15. They did have a really good live music entertainer that played a Native American flute. If I had more energy, I would have picked another restaurant off-site. read more

On our one night in Santa Fe, we drove onto the Santa Fe Inn property looking for Amaya and found it was easily accessible from the back part of the layout. It was a large covered outdoor patio (no walls on two sides), beautifully set and decorated. We luckily got a table right at the edge by the garden. Food was wonderful and our waitress was the BEST! I had the stuffed roasted poblano pepper with a chili sauce which was NOT mole like the menu implied. (I can't stand mole sauce!) My husband got the tuna poke and loved it. Tuna was raw. We enjoyed the whole relaxed dinner and evening and hope to go back next time we're in Santa Fe. read more

Beautiful patio. Some of the best service I have seen. Menus a bit limited and pricey. Nice change from the usual New Mexico food. I had the squid ink seafood pasta. We are staying at the hotel and had dinner here twice. Wanted to do 4.5 stars. The first night I had the elk tenderloin with chokecherry sauce and it was great, perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful. The margaritas are tasty as well, especially the hornitos and the prickly pear, which is not too sweet. They have a good kids menu for the less adventurous, but well executed and reasonably priced. Today I ordered the other special entree, the Chile and honey rubbed quail with wild rice and chard. It was tasty, but there was one tiny deboned quail, and very little meat. Whenever I've had quail as an entree it's always come with at least two, and usually there's a little more meat. I was seriously hungry afterwards, even after sharing half a creme brûlée. The desserts also need work, a little more local flavor and more gluten free options would be great. read more

This is one of my top 3 places for lunch in Santa Fe. I take clients knowing they'll find something memorable on the menu. I often get the Picuris (named after the pueblo) chicken salad and also LOVE the tortilla soup. This place is subtle and sweet - and very southwest. It's not an east coast or west coast style - it's truly southwest. In the summer, the outdoor patio with the native flower gardens and tipi make it an even better attraction for my out of town guests. read more

Food was absolutely delicious. I had the duck, my boyfriend had the filet mignon and my mom had the sea bass and they were all excellent and flavorful. Portions were good - we left very satisfied. Atmosphere was wonderful in the open-air dining area. Service was very kind and attentive when they stopped by, however we did have to ask for water refills, and our waitress didn't come back much after we got our food (it was near the end of the night, so I imagine everyone was getting ready to close up). Nonetheless, we were enjoying ourselves and weren't too bothered by this. In a city of amazing food, I don't expect a lot from a hotel restaurant and bar, but Amaya was a surprising find. The bartenders and servers were all kind. The cocktails are creative. We had breakfast here one morning - enchanting breakfast burritos filled with tasty meats and potatoes, and smothered in red and green chile sauces - delightful! We stopped in for dinner on a weeknight, and it was one of the worst restaurant experiences we've had in quite a while. First, the positive comments: 1. The outdoor seating area is quite nice. 2. The wait staff are very friendly and try to be helpful. 3. The prix fixe menu is quite inexpensive. That's where the pep talk ends. Perhaps it was a bad night, but Amaya seems to be suffering from bad management. First, it was chaos at the reception desk; in addition to the host there seemed to be three or four other people doing seating, and none of them seemed to be communicating with the others. Second, the wait staff did not really seem to be up to the task of working at a fine restaurant; for example, when I asked a question about one of the wines on the list, the waiter's answer was to bring us the bottle to look at. I don't blame the staff, because clearly they have not been properly prepared to work in a supposedly nice restaurant. Then there was the very odd cork incident. The bottle of wine that we ordered had a problem with the cork, which disintegrated upon removal, but the waiter was able to salvage the bottle. A few minute later, he brought us a cork from a different bottle and set it on our table! It was worth a good chuckle, but not exactly indicative of fine restaurant practices. And then there was the food. My salad was badly overdressed (to the degree that the dressing almost choked me), and the grape tomatoes on the salad were sad and wrinkly. For main I ordered the poblano chili stuffed with tofu and roasted vegetables. This dish had absolutely no flavor! The only reason I am giving two rather than one star is because the desserts were decent, the staff tried hard, and my wife also enjoyed her soup. But I would definitely not recommend the place to anyone. read more

Much of the food just wasn't very good: the sweet potatoes were canned, the desserts were store-bought, the dressing was over-peppered, the buffalo short ribs had a nice flavor but were very fatty, the cranberries were bitter, etc. The turkey was moist and the pumpkin pear bisque was good. My husband and I stayed at this hotel and arrived hungry, mid afternoon, from an early morning East Coast flight. Ana at Amaya was our introduction to the fine beverages and cuisine served here. We went there for a birthday celebration with a group of 10 seniors. It was important for the wait staff to speak French or at least attempt a French accent with their English. Happy birthday was sung 4 times, but that might have been because it was a Thursday night and the restaurant was empty. The food was fair; my friend's lamb was ok, my "sea bass" was in a broth. ? Wife's crab cake was like mother used to make from a can. The infused pressed watermelon salad was good, I was told. The Alfresco setting with a live musician performing Native American songs on the flute and singing was simply enchanting. And the food was out of this world. Where to begin? My wife's sister and husband had come from Idaho for Christmas in Santa Fe. Their 27th anniversary was on the 27th. We wanted to find a nice restaurant for them to celebrate. Based on the reviews we read here and the menu we decided on Amaya. First issue was only two of us were going to have wine and they only had one red on the menu in a half bottle, and they were out of that selection. Maybe two or three half bottle choices would avoid that situation. We ordered an appetizer which was brought at the same time as the salad. Bread was brought after the salad with butter straight from the refrigerator, which is really difficult to spread on cornbread. Two of the four entrees were brought and the second two 5 minutes later. My sister in law ordered the Green Chile French Dip which came with no chiles and au jus that was to salty to eat. We sent it back and everyone else was done by the time the replacement arrived. My wife ordered the New Mexico Lamb Chops that consisted of three chops which were maybe 1oz. a piece and overcooked and slightly burned. My Tempura Relleno was very good but it was the only thing on the plate no garnish or presentation at all. The last thing ordered was the Quail. It was liked but the "rainbow chard" that was one of the sides was really most likely kale and certainly not rainbow. The manager did comp the French Dip and did finally bring the lemons for our waters, being the third request and coming at the end of the meal. For a meal for 4 that came to $140 I would expect better. I also might suggest to the owner that long sleeve t-shirts worn by the wait staff might be a bit to casual for the image they are trying to portray. read more

I won a gift certificate to Amaya in a raffle, so I went there for dinner on September 21, 2009. Nice place but it was smaller than I would have guessed for a hotel of their size. The food was good. I had the roasted chicken which was delicious, but my portion was rather small. My companion had the steak which I was told was also very good and was a much bigger portion than my meal. Appetizers were also good and fair sized portions. We did the pre fix dinner which included dessert and if I hadn't checked the bill they would have double charged us for dessert. If I had people visiting me, I would bring them there. read more

We stayed at the hotel Santa Fe and the restaurant is in the hotel. Pleasantly surprised what a wonderful place it was! We arrived on a Saturday and the ambiance was so nice we thought "maybe we will just eat here tonight". Didn't think to make. A reservation and the place was packed by 7. But we got a table. Service was lovely. My husband wanted a burger even tho it was only on the lunch menu and not the dinner menu and they made it for him. I had the crab cake appetizer and salad which rivaled a New England crab cake. Saved room for the almond pear torte for desert. Yum! Waddled upstairs to our cozy room. Price was very reasonable also. I actually wanted to eat here again the next day but we decided we should try somewhere else. read more

Took my husband, sister and father to Amaya for New Year's Eve dinner while visiting Santa Fe - lured by the opportunity to hear Native American music while we dined. The food was excellent (although not necessarily what I thought Native American food would be), service was prompt and attentive (although not all of the servers were Native American themselves as I had expected), the surroundings festive, and the music (solo woodwind and solo guitar) provided a very nice background to an elegant dinner. Portions were large enough that two split plates were enough for all four of us - especially considering the good appetizers and the tasty desserts available. Gruet, a New Mexican Sparkling Wine, which had been recommended by our cousins in Albuquerque, was available from the extensive wine list. And after a little mix-up about whether Jack Daniels makes bourbon, my husband was able to get a very satisfactory Maker's Mark bourbon on the rocks to go with the quail appetizer. read more
