The entrance is quite small and unassuming, and the initial interior looks cramped, but the restaurant does have a nice back area for additional (and quieter) seating. As for the food, Amber promotes itself as Asian-fusion, which is why they have a culinary smorgasbord of dishes from all over Asia on their menu. We ordered the Pad Thai (the cheapest thing on the menu at $18), and the Ume roll combo (what we believed was the best value on the menu at $25 for 3 rolls). The Ume roll was surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) bland and the salmon/yellowtail/tuna all tasted exactly the same. The Pad Thai fared better and actually had some sweet/spicy notes, but it was nothing special. Overall, while I didn't have any major complaints about the food, I probably wouldn't go back. Everything on the menu needs to be $5 cheaper, in my opinion, to be worth ordering, otherwise I feel like I'm getting robbed.

A pleasant surprise! My friend and I were really craving sushi, but the spot we were originally trying to go to was full for the night. After searching on yelp we found this spot close by and decided to give it a shot. The interior looks small at first, but there's an entire other section in the back which we were led to. It was super cozy. We decided to share the ume roll combo and the sushi generation. The ume roll combo was quite generous in terms of portion for the price, and came with spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and hamachi. The sushi generation had three types of nigiri and the same spicy salmon roll. All the fish tasted pretty fresh, and I really enjoyed the rolls in the ume roll combo! I liked how it was really simple with just the fish, rice, and seaweed. This probably isn't the highest quality or best sushi you'll find, but if you're really craving it this definitely satisfies that. Good service as well!

Amber has always the freshest and highest quality sushi at affordable price. And definitely the best lychee martini in New York City! Hands down! The staff is also extremely friendly. Highly recommend

Very low key spot, but great food and great vibes. I got the veggie dumplings you get 6 for $10 which such a great deal for this area. We got there pretty late- and the service was great and quick. Waitress was nice and super chill. Food was great can't really go wrong with some dumplings and texture was good too. Giving it 5 stars because everyone loves a place that isn't overpriced and in this city it's hard to find something that isn't.

Amber restaurant offers a nice selection of lunch specials at competitive prices. Sushi & sashimi as well as Thai dishes & "fusion" Asian cuisine are the cornerstone of their menu; the menu offers a wide range of options (besides sushi) to choose from. This week I tried 1) 3 Maki Rolls. The salmon & yellowtail rolls were better than the eel. All were fresh & delicious! Recommend. 2) Thai Basil flank steak. A bit too much oil /fat for me. Needed a little more spice/flavor. Good portion size. Enjoyed the rice. 3) Salad & Miso soup - both good. Overall, really liked the sushi rolls. Excellent lunch menu. One of the best sushi spots in the neighborhood.

Great lunch special deal!! The mango chicken platter was good, my cousin said it needed more rice. The ratio was a bit off. All the sushi dishes were very solid! The sashimi pieces had a good cut of fish and the rice ratio was perfect. The fish quality was also pretty quality and tasted fresh! The sushi / sashimi lunch special comes with miso soup and salad. The normal lunch special plates come with miso soup, salad, and either dumpling or mini rolls. The service was good, pretty standard. All the tables were filled, yet it wasn't that loud for a smaller space!

Amber is located about a block west of Central Park, and is convenient, somewhat affordable, but above all, is home to some excellent, delicious food. We got there at around 5.30 pm, and while the place was virtually empty considering it was early dinner time, they were fulfilling many, many to-go orders. The server was really friendly, and made the experience all the better. We ordered a spicy Sushi combo which was $23 (iirc), a rather good deal for 3 types of spicy Sushi: yellowtail, salmon, and tuna. The sushi was well made, well put together, and we enjoyed each bite. It doesn't stand out, but at the same time, doesn't disappoint either. The other entree was the Amber Shaking beef, which is meant to be spicy. It was slightly spicy, and is a bit on the saltier side. However, we thoroughly enjoyed it! The beef pieces were excellent and I just really liked the dish, which comes with taro chips on the side. The taro chips are so good, as well, and I wished for more. It comes with a side of rice. Overall, it was a really pleasant experience, and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for Japanese food near the Central Park area, if you don't want to be spending a fortune on food.

Single-use plastic spoon and plastic individual soy sauce packets. All not asked for or needed. Going straight to the landfill.

Hello, We love your food but were so dissapointed to find plastic spoons in the order when we didn't ask for them, as well as loads single-use individually plastic wrapped soy sauce. We are eating at home and don't need any of this. I cringe to imagine how much waste you are causing your take-out customers to put into the landfill each day. Not to mention the food was delivered in an unnecessary plastic bag (they have been against the law for years now). The food would have looked far more appetizing if delivered in the simple paper bags, the outer plastic bag was not needed. Please consider not sending these items anymore, or atleast ask if people need them before loading bags with them. 3.5 Stars but rounding up to 4 Stars. I used to go to Amber alot when they were located across the street, in a much larger and much nicer space. But rent in the UWS is no joke and they moved to its current, smaller (& not as nice) space a couple of years ago. Service and hospitality is still great, however, their food, albeit still good, is just not as good as it used to be. I still go to Amber sometimes because they have great Lunch Specials! Today's lunch: My friend had two sushi rolls of his choice, which came with soup and salad. He said it was "okay, same old, same old" but good value at $11. I had the chicken with green curry, which came with choice of mini appetizer (I picked sui mai), soup AND salad for $13. Now that is alot of food! By the time my green curry dish came, I was getting full and only ate about a third of it, and took the rest as a doggy bag...lunch for tomorrow! The food was good but not great. Green curry was super mild and not spicy at all. Still tasty but a little "dummied down" for the UWS. Would I return? Sure, as my friend said, it's a good value lunch. Amber is still a pretty good option for this neighborhood!

Ambiance was good- I think the restaurant can lean towards the more casual or a little more formal, there isn't a specific vibe. The food was good- not the best sushi I've ever had, but it was good! The service was also good. The food came in a timely manner.

Hit up this joint off the beaten PATH and get a feel for your initial vibes into Meatpacking District up the street a bit. Calm, artistically cultural space with soul-fire enthusiastic employees. Made my guest appearance feel welcoming. Food is fresh and clean. Talented rolls for the right price. I want to come back here. Bar at the front offers accommodating seating options for back or window preferences. Take a date or a comfortable five party. Ask for Rudy--he knows truth. Great tasting fresh sushi. I highly recommend the lobster roll. The only downside was the service being a little slow. However, it seemed more like a staffing issue--I saw two waiters working the entire inside and outdoor seating areas. I came during lunch. read more

Overpriced. Sorry, the food is good but not $20/plate good. -I ordered the chicken drunken noodles which were supposed to be spicy. NOT spicy at all. So i asked for hot sauce which made it better -hubby ordered Thai Basil with steak. This tasted better than the drunken noodles. -each is about $20 (or more?) which was a bit overpriced to me. Two fails/one visit. Got to this restaurant at 2:20 on a Friday for their lunch special - which ends at 3. After I'm seated, the waiter says "we aren't doing the lunch special today", with no explanation. I order the Thai basil chicken and it was very disappointing (essentially just overpowering plate of red onions). I took one bite and moved it to the end of the table. The waiter came by and said "I'm guessing you don't like it". I said "unfortunately not, I'm sorry". He came back with the check, and charged me anyway without any apology or offer for something else instead. read more

This sushi place is really nice and quiet, and it is the perfect place to go to for dinner. The wait for food on a Friday night was only around 3 minutes! I ordered the salmon avocado and Philadelphia roll. The salmon avocado roll was very good, but the Philadelphia roll was quite disappointing. The rolls were nicely priced. The atmosphere of the restaurant for dinner is dim and peaceful. I enjoyed my dinner here. read more

Just a few steps down from street level is a little treasure. Staff warmly welcomed us. Fellas sat at the bar chatting like pals with the bartender. The waiter was friendly and attentive. Ordered steamed shrimp shumai, zesty chicken, and the Asia style seafood fried rice. Everything was hot and delicious. Very much enjoyed. The menu has a nice selection of items. The decor was tidy and warm and inviting. Music was nice. The ambiance was good for intimate chatter. I'd definitely come back here. read more

I can't tell if I'm a bigger fan of their delicious food or Thomas, the best server I've ever had in my life. Amber's sushi is delicious, but they also offer amazing entrees and drinks (try their green tea margarita!). Thomas is as equally amazing -super kind, funny, and attentive, this guy has me coming back for more. I've been here twice so far. The first time was just before a concert at the nearby Beacon Theater and my boyfriend and I were running late. Thomas was super understanding of our schedule and accommodating and I loved the experience so much i brought my parents to Amber while they were in town. The parents had stellar reviews (rare) and were impressed by how Thomas genuinely cared about our experience. Top notch guy! read more

Ordered miso soup, steamed edamame, and a few sushi rolls. Miso and edamame were good. Our friends got sauteed edamame and theirs was not so good (it smelled and tasted liked burned oil). The rolls ranged from ok (shrimp tempura) to not so good (spicy tuna, where the fish smelled bad). I won't come back. read more

You get what you pay for here - good sushi for the price, nothing super impressive to rave about but definitely a solid casual sushi spot. Pick up experience was good - the order was ready as soon as I got there. I really liked how the spicy Mayo too, better than most places I have been to. Fish quality is eh, nothing that will blow you away but again it's reflected in their prices so no issue there. Definitely recommend for anyone in need of a quick, casual sushi spot in the neighborhood. read more

My co-workers and I get the sushi roll ("favorite 2 or 3 roll") lunch special delivered to our office about once a week. It's a good deal at $10.50 for 2 rolls, salad and miso soup. The quality of the food is average but still better than other inexpensive sushi lunch places we've tried. There has been a time or two where the sushi has not tasted very fresh (!) but most of the time it's pretty good. Not somewhere I'd go for an amazing dinner out. They do have other lunch specials: pad Thai, other Thai type dishes so it's a cross between Japanese and Thai food. I think the miso soup is actually pretty good and not as salty as some sushi places. The pad Thai doesn't have a ton of flavor so I always ask for extra lime but it's comforting and fine when I'm in the mood. All in all a fine lunch bet but nothing that will impress. I've never eaten at the restaurant. read more

Solid Japanese restaurant close to Lincoln Center and the Museum of Natural History. I had visited the old location and thought that one was quite cute-this one is on the small side with nothing standing out. The soup dumplings were blah so I would skip them. Some of the best tasting and beautiful sushi I've had. It is a combination of the service, presentation, and unique combinations of the usual ingredients. This is the second time I've eaten here, and it is as good as the last time, almost exactly one year ago. And for a New York City establishment, it is reasonably priced. Mediocre. Don't come here, there are plenty of other sushi and Asian places in this city. If you do decide to come here, don't order the veggie sushi roll. It was terrible (and I've had some great vegetarian sushi before). We came here for lunch today, and the waitress was completely unprofessional and not even remotely friendly. We asked if there was any way to add cooked salmon in a roll and the waitress said no. Then asked to order the peanut avocado roll as one of our rolls in the lunch special, and the waitress said that would be fine. Come to find in our bill that she charged a full dollar for the peanuts in each roll without letting us know it would be extra. Mind you, there are much more expensive roll options in the lunch special including fish, and this one just simply had peanuts and avocado. Our sushi was falling apart when dipped in soy sauce, and wasn't tasty at all. Disappointed, as Amber's East Side location used to be one we would frequent often. read more

A true gem! My roommate and I were craving some takeout sushi and chose this spot on the walk home. Loved the whole experience -- amazing service while waiting at the bar for our food. Small, cozy counter and dining room, kind of hidden from Columbus Ave. We had a couple of kitchen tapas, rolls, and the shrimp shumai. Everything was tasty and nicely presented. Service was friendly and efficient. Definitely will return with friends when in the area. read more

I cannot believe how terrible this place is. The inside is so small and not even clean. They do have a small outside area. We did sit there. This service could not have been more horrible. The sushi wasn't even good. The server did not smile, forgot half of our order, was rushing us out, did not ask us if we wanted anything else or any more drinks, and overall was just rude. I would definitely not recommend this place and I would not go back or order from them again. It's a shame because the one on the upper east side is excellent. read more

Ordered delivery from Amber and tried the Shrimp Shumai appetizer, the Crunchy Spicy Sea Scallop Roll, the Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll, and the Spicy Snow Crab and Flying Fish Roe Roll. The delivery took longer than expected (and the appetizer arrived cold) and food was decent - not the best sushi I have had. Also, we noticed the prices here for maki rolls and special rolls in particular are slightly higher compared to some of our other go to delivery sushi spots. Although the food was not bad, our experience here was only mediocre and I wouldn't necessarily order from here again. read more

What's with all the negative review? First time here so not sure if they recently changed chef or something. This place have great solid sushi and their pork dumpling was great. Price is reasonable too! Most importantly, THEY DONT HAVE THICK RICE AROUND SUSHI!!! Thank you for doing it right. I hate it when there's a centimeter thick of rice around the sushi. Great place for lunch. Plenty of food, good variety and fresh. Recommend their lunch specials as we had teriyaki salmon, mango chicken and teri chicken was all superb. The sushi plates on neighboring tables looked fabulous. Service was excellent and the hidden natural light in the backroom seating area was a nice surprise. When we lived in Manhattan, Amber was our go-to sushi place. We were in the area and decided to go. Lucky for us, we walked down a different block and saw the sign. They had moved 2 months prior across the street. The place is much smaller but the quality was the same. The sushi and special rolls were delicious. I usually get the sushi/sashimi combo for one and it was great! The pineapple fried rice was delicious as usual. We will continue to go when in the area. read more

This tiny place, once on Columbus Ave, is not only incredibly friendly and efficient, the food is flavorful, creative, and delicious. The sushi is very fresh, and the Tapas are superb. Prices in the restaurant are more than reasonable, and the staff is attentive and kind. Delivery from Amber is always on time, hot, and in 4 years of ordering from them, never wrong. While I can't vouch for authenticity but I can vouch for a delicious bite. Sazanami Hamba-Gu is notable for their Japanese Hamburger Steak, which is a hamburger without the bun, a very popular dish in Japan. Their version was served on a platter with rice, vegetables, miso soup, and chawanmushi. The patty itself was very juicy and tender and noted on the menu as a beef and pork combination. I included some addons which made my entree far more pricer. The fried egg was a good call while the double cheese probably wasn't necessary. I got the recommended red wine demi-glacé and another with the soy onion. The red wine was better in my opinion. Also got a tonkatsu to share and while the breading was very good the pork was a little drier than other ones I've had. I'd skip the tonkatsu and stick with the Hambu-gu as that was definitely more notable. Service was friendly but the entree does take time to prepare. I'd say think twice if you are in a hurry.

I think the eggs are cooked with cheese, and as someone who typically does not eat cheese, I didn't mind it. I don't know if I'll be back again - I think the concept of an asian twist on the classic diner does sound intriguing but difficult to execute. I also wasn't a big fan of the wait time. If you typically like heavier, diner food then this spot might be the place for you!

I loved watching the staff prepare the noodles while waiting. My bowl was huge and absolutely delicious. It was very spicy as promised, but not too spicy that it was rendered not enjoyable. I looked at other orders and everything looked delicious, leading to only semi-regret of my choice. My lemonade was very good. I'm very much looking forward to returning.

4 stars for delivery. 3 stars for dine in. This is my go-to spot for evenings when I just can't bear the thought of cooking dinner myself (which is a lot of them). I pretty much order the same thing every time -- miso soup, tuna avocado roll, salmon avocado roll, 2 pcs yellowtail sashimi. The sushi is consistently good quality and the delivery is usually lightening speed. A few times they've forgotten to include something, but they always bring it right away and remove it from the bill. It's incredibly well priced, especially compared to other options in the area. I don't love the signature rolls as much. This is more of a "stick to the basics" kind of place in my opinion, but my husband has had a few of the more adventurous rolls (soft shell crab, etc.) and has always liked them. It's not a place I would eat-in, though. The space is actually cute and has a pretty solid locals scene -- lots of people always at the bar eating solo and chatting which is nice -- but it's pretty dark and small and if I'm bothering to go out, I want to go out to a place that I don't order in from multiple times a week :-) so I guess they're delivery is too good to make it a place to dine in...?
