First, I never write reviews. I look at them all the time, but rarely take the time to write one myself...I felt it was needed to offset some of the reviews I've read here... I recently relocated to Williamsburg and in the midst of packing up and selling my home, I lost sight of my car inspection. It was already over due. I called American Pride and they were able to get me in the same day and even helped me get back and forth to my hotel from drop off to pick up. I am a widow and often get hit up for 'added repairs and services'...(I think being a woman dealing with car things, makes me a target). Given some of the other reviews here, I was a little worried that would be the case. They couldn't have been more kind, were courteous and no added 'recommended services or repairs' were pushed onto me. Just a passed state inspection and ready to go. Thank you American Pride. We were first time customers, car a/c blowing warm air. In by 8am called before 5pm the car was ready. Picked up the car and a/c was blowing cold.... next morning a/c blowing warm again. Called in and they were unable to fit us in for 5 days ? In at 8am ... shortly after a call with um, ya need an $800 hose, um ya no we can't provide a detailed estimate.... um, yeah parts take 6-8 days. Honestly, I lost any confidence this business had the skills to provide this service. I took the vehicle elsewhere ... there diagnosis completely different with a written estimate detailing the condenser as the worn part, the part was ordered and installed in less than 3 hours at about half the cost, with a written warranty. I went back to American Pride Automotive, with the rusted worn condenser and asked for a refund of the $276. misdiagnosis and repair that they claimed to have provided and the Service Director could not for the life of him admit to his businesses failure. So, I gave him and honest chance to save a customer and instead has lost any chance at our business, but for $276 he's bought a lifetime of bad advertising for American Pride Automotive to all our family and friends. I looked at the other reviews for this business and see it's a pattern.... that's a shame. read more

We went for a state inspection. Arrived on time with no one ahead of us & 90 minutes later we were presented with two pages of things totaling $3400+! APA was using this time to find things is what we suspect. Our SRX passed inspection--none of the items suggested where related to the passing of inspection! For an auto that is driven less than 250 miles in a year, we just couldn't believe these pages of repairs. None of these were mentioned in the previous yearly inspection! We were probably considered old and not knowledgeable on auto issues; plus having a Cadi SRX had money to spend! We lived in the area over 20 years being retired contract mail carriers. Am down on Vacation, pads on one wheel worn out. Drop off late one afternoon, get "diagnostic review" - All tires, all brakes, wiper, battery cable... on and on. Ask them to do the one set of pads, Am told over 350$ (pads are 50-70$ at the store), fine. Next afternoon, caliper slide is an issue - one more day and another 375$. Technologically, good shop consistent communication - pleasant staff. Took advantage of the situation to charge 2 1/2 times what it should be. Very disappointed. read more

Good luck! These people are crooks Bought a truck, with a brand new engine that they warrantied and installed however we have since learned it was installed improperly. We have been fighting this for four years. Just had to call the manufacturer and get the engine reinstalled because they don't stand behind any of their work.(American pride) I've been shuffled around and spent thousands of dollars, unnecessarily in attempt to figure out what was wrong with the engine they installed as new and then wouldn't stand by. If you take your car to get inspected, I guarantee you're gonna have about 10 things on your list that need fixed. Good luck. CROOKS! I picked up my truck today and upon paying for it, I asked a few questions. 1) Why are your costs for an oil change 30-50 percent higher than Valovoline, Firestone and lastly thre dealer A) Firestone in Williamsburg- $90 1. American pride 112.24 2) Auto trans flush and fill- Vavoline, firestone, toyota dealer between $180.00-200.00 1) American Pride- 240.25. C) A charge to inspect the suspension, 100.00. 1) I never agreed to this cost 2) American Pride did not inspect or diagnose anything, they simply repeated what I told them the potential problem was ( coil over shocks all the way around). Then quoted me 1400 dollars to replace them...which 1000. 00 dollars was labor. the average labor cost to do this on my vehicle 400.00 dollars and I already have the parts to do it. D) The front desk person could not give me there labor rate per hr. The perosn simply said " its what the computer says it costs" I asked for the Manager, He told me he did not know what his own shops labor rate was and it is not listed ANYWHERE.... Highly suspect!!!!!! E) I asked for Contact info the Owner, I was told he doesnt take phone calls and I was handed a scribbled on card with an email address on it. Conclusion- Go to Valvoline to have any fluids replaced, go to any other shop in the Williamsburg area and you will get a much better price with much more transparency into the costs of things and you will feel much better about not being completley screwed over. read more

I've had my car there back in the spring and again in the fall and both times I didn't walk out with less than $2000 in work. Seeming a bit unbelievable after the second time one day later, I had lights going off, warning me and announcements from through my radio warning me that I had an engine problem. My wife took her car to be inspected. They would not pass the vehicle because of a hairline crack in the side mirror. BS since the car has passed inspection several years in a row without issue. So, okay we had the mirror repaired (very expensive). Once repaired they then magically found another issue. Quoted $700 to repair this latest find. I had the vehicle taken to another mechanic. He inspected the supposed problem and there was absolutely no problem, it was a complete lie. This company is obviously very DISHONEST, and you should avoid doing business with them. Wish I had read the Yelp reviews in advance, take a look. Our story is very familiar. If the State of Virginia wants people to drive safely, they should get rid of dishonest inspectors like this one. read more

I went to the shop American pride in Toano for my car inspection. After waiting for more than an hour, the results is my car fail and need a repair something. It's OK , so I made an appointment for this and waiting for they Oder part . But when I take my car to go home , what the heck when to start the car is shaking so bad and show up a drive strain warning light . I never see this thing before and I still drive my car very smooth every day and before I come there for a car inspection. I have a question with the front desk and the answer is they didn't do anything. I went home and ask around what is the drive strain meaning and the answer cause is when you speed so fast the car will have that warning . And I never drive over 60 mph , so then when they test my car in the road the technician did it and they don't want responsible about that . Updating my comments. American Pride has gone down hill in the last few years. In the last year, I've had three disappointing experiences. Most recently, I was quoted $1,600 to do some brake work. I paid the fee for having the car looked at, and decided to take it elsewhere. The same repairs cost me $400 at that shop. I took my car to get inspected by them, was told that there were about $1400 in repairs that needed to be done in order for it to pass, one to include paying over $500 for a parking light repair, another was saying my entire suspension system was bad (never any issues with this, or any issues that would indicate the suspension system was bad), among several other things to equate to the $1400. Took it for a second opinion and NOT ONE THING they had listed (with the exception of the parking light and it didn't cost anywhere near the quoted price, at less than $100) was correct. They are a true racket and most of the time when you go into their shop speak to you like you are stupid. Very condescending. Great place to have your car serviced! Everyone that works here is so nice and accommodating. We were visiting from out of town and had car trouble. They got us in to check out the car quickly. They're very expensive. They charge you almost $200 to diagnose anything they found an issue with. They couldn't align my wheels but they still charge me for an alignment and then to find why it wasn't aligning, I'd had to pay to diagnose what the issue is. Will never go back there. read more

I went to the location on Ironbound road which isn't listed. I went there for the state inspection and they didn't more then the inspection which I wasn't expecting. I got there early and they took my car early. I have some things that need to be fixed in my car and they took my the top ones that need to me fix. They told me some serve issues that no one else address compared to when I take my car to the dealership. I will be definitely taking my car there from now on. Mixed feelings about this place. I wish 3.5 was an option on the ratings. Several times they pinpointed problems I already knew were wrong and fixed them perfectly. Another time, they said I needed a new alternator. I popped the hood when I got home, noticed a loose battery connection, fixed it. It's been 4 years, still haven't replaced the alternator. It made me almost not go back but given the age of my car, I chalked it up to an armchair diagnosis / human error. Definitely get second opinions before major repairs. I opt for the dealership as my first choice, with them being my second... if I can't / don't have the time to fix it myself. read more

This is a review for the location on Ironbound Rd. in Williamsburg. I have been here 2 times now. The staff is very friendly and they do a good job of communicating with me during the jobs. They email detailed diagnoses with images before starting. They also aggressively look for things to fix on each visit, so if you drop by for an oil change or a state inspection, don't be suprised if you get a call recommending hundreds or thousands of dollars for repairs you weren't expecting. This can be good for your peace of mind, knowing they are carefully inspecting your car, but as far as your budget goes, you may feel like you are being upcharged when you visit. As far as I can tell, they do good work, so I have no complaints about the knowledge of the staff or the quality of the work. I'm also not a mechanic myself, so who really knows. Yelp describes a 2 star review as: "Could have been better." What could be better is the transparency of their pricing. If you are getting something replaced, try asking them for an itemized breakdown of parts and labor, and see what they say. After my last visit, I asked Jesse at the front desk for an itemized breakdown of parts and labor, because I was curious how much the parts cost, and how much time was spent fixing my car. I was told that the price quotes are "packaged" as parts and labor together, and that they were not able to give me any specific information about the cost of parts, the cost of labor, or the time spent fixing my car. I tried to rephrase my question, and asked if they could just show me a receipt for the replacement parts they purchased. He said, "again, our prices are packaged, parts and labor together so I am unable to do that." This company's billing conventions do not feel proffessional. This is a first for me; for a mechanic to not be transparent about the cost of parts and labor. It also makes me wonder if they actually used the part they promised on the original estimate. As of right now, I really have no way to be sure, which isn't a great feeling. I looked up the part numbers from the invoice on the Internet so I could try and gauge the price breakdown on my own. My invoice lists the price of a clutch (MBK1010), a flywheel (LFW444), and labor all "packaged together" with the labor costs total of $2,223.39. I found the cost of the clutch at Autozone to be $334 and the cost of the flywheel at RockAuto.com to be $92. $2,223 (total) - $334 (clutch) - $92 (flywheel) = $1,797 (labor?) So according to the information I have on hand, the cost of labor to replace my clutch was maybe $1,797. The most I have ever heard of a mechanic charging per hour was $200/hour, and again, I was not able to get this information from the front desk, so I will assume that rate to be generous. That means they maybe spent something like 9 hours replacing my clutch. Now, I believe that they may have also replace a bearing, or something else, but all I have to go on is this receipt with "packaged costs" which makes no mention of any of that. Another internet search claims that on average, to replace a clutch, it would typically take between 2 to 6 hours. So let me again point out, that the staff here is very friendly, they seem knowledgable, and as far as I can tell they do good work. My car seems to be working just fine so far since the new clutch was put in. And I am perfectly happy to pay good money for good work. The issue here is that I don't have a full picture of what exactly I paid for. It's requiring a lot of faith that they really spent 9 hours replacing my clutch, or that they used the exact part they listed on the invoice. Or maybe it only took them 4 hours and they charged me like $400/hour for labor. I have no way of knowing. If they did other fixes to the transmission, as part of the clutch replacement, it isn't listed on the invoice. So in summation, if you bring your car in here, and they quote you a price you are happy with, I will definitely recommend them. I can see they work hard and I believe they do want all of their customers' vehicles to be in tip-top shape. If, like me, it will bother you to not be provided with an itemized breakdown of parts and labor, then just know what you are getting into here. They will offer you a loyalty rewards program (I have almost $200 in credit after this last visit which included several things besides the clutch replacement at a total of $4,400). They will also offer you Uber rides to and from their shop while they have your car. Great. Would I rather have gotten a friend to drive me back and forth, and traded that loyalty discount for a lower bill in the first place? Absolutely. At the end of the day, I will probably even take my car back to them in the future, because I don't really know any better right now. Seeing proof of purchase for the parts and a breakdown of labor costs would do wonders for my opinion of American Pride. read more

I brought my car in for my state inspection. My car came back and failed inspection due to the headlights being "illegal" we haven't had the car for more than a year and a half, and the dealership we bought it from passed inspection when we bought it. American Pride tried telling us they could replace the headlights for $700!!!! I told them absolutely not and took my car back to the dealership where we bought it from, they did a complete Re-Inspection and said the headlights were in fact not Illegal. I highly do not recommend taking your vehicle into this shop for anything! If you don't know any better they will try and get your money!!! read more

Brought my car here to diagnose a high pitch whine and intermittent transmission engagement issue. The service person told me I needed a level 2 diagnostic for $199 to identify the problem. I agreed to this service because I needed to know specifically what caused this problem. Later, the service person informed me that the entire clutch assembly needed to be replaced for $1,600. When I did not approve this repair the service person said "I guess you can drive it till it dies." When I picked up my car the mechanic told me that the issue could be the clutch, the transmission, or something else. An out-of-town mechanic diagnosed a problem with the clutch specifically, not the entire assembly, and charged me $621 for diagnostic and clutch repair. Additionally, my car needs a valve adjustment which is a common issue with my make and model. I contacted American Pride asking for a refund since 1) they failed to sufficiently diagnose the issue I asked them to diagnose and 2) they failed to diagnose an issue common to my make and model during the $199 diagnostic. In response Billy called me and told me that since their guess turned out to be partially correct, I had no cause to complain. I said that American Pride staff did not agree about what caused the issue, and that quoting a $1,600 repair for an issue that hadn't been specifically diagnosed was wrong. Billy then said that to diagnose the specific issue, they would have had to "open" the part of the car that was making the noise. This admission confirms that American Pride failed to sufficiently diagnose the issue I asked them to diagnose. Billy offered no response to my complaint that American Pride failed to identify that the car needed a valve adjustment. Billy insisted that I send him the paperwork from my out-of-town mechanic. I agreed to send the paperwork if American Pride would refund my diagnostic. Billy said he had to check with his boss and call me back. This was a month ago and Billy has not called me back. read more

In addition they were 30% more expensive than my regular service shop. They got my car fixed in one day and for that I am thankful but... very predatory in their charging. They sent me a link with picture of everything being inspected, and they recommended that I change the brake fluid. My car was due for inspection, appointment time was a week later. Was told would be available before noontime. After getting a call nearly 12:30 informing me with a pleasant apology. When arrived to pick up vehicle I get this very expensive quote on recommendations for service to my vehicle that was not even related to the state inspection when I asked why they even offer all that he started cutting me off in the middle of asking him questions and called me combative with me only asking questions I was not raising my voice except when he started interupting me when I was simply asking questions, My recommendation is to get a more proffessional service advisor. 3.5 stars read more

I'm from Illinois, knew I had to stop and find out what was wrong with my 2009 Ford Escape with 270k miles that I just can't replace right now. Jake and team dropped everything to take the time to diagnose a few issues, only one of which was unexpected. Two issues were absolutely necessary right away. Out of the other three, Jake explained what each one meant in terms of consequences of not fixing right away. Decided one of them needed to be done. Absolutely fair pricing. They were able to replace front brakes, CV axles and motor mounts within 24 hours - which is astounding! I've never experienced such terrific service with any kind of repair to anything I've owned. I would be caution with American Pride. I see a lot of folks recommending and I went to American Pride based on their recommendations. Twice I have been disappointed by there service. August I took my car in to be looked at and requested my door arms be removed. They just broke off the arms and never removed the hardware. This week I figured I go in and have them look at my car since I was getting water in. I mentioned that they never took off the hardware from the last service. Short story....they found no leek and quoted me over $3k on other stuff that they never mentioned in August and they wanted to give me a quote to remove screws from the door. Plus, I had an 8 AM schedule and my car was not taking into the shop until about 4:30 pm. read more

We were traveling though and knew we had an issue due to a wheel noice. They were kind enough to check us in first thing Monday morning and told there would be a free check but hour later manager calls to say there would be a full diagnosis report check of $220. We need to understand the issue and now was a few miles away so told them that was more than need but if that was what they need to let us know what was wrong we had no choice. The report came up with anything and every thing to fix on the car and what was not entered car facts. Again more than need and suggesting over 5k of total work on a 10 year old car. They recommend at least 2k of work to address the noice issue. Unhappy with this report We got another opinion that led us to one part to replace at only $513. These other guys Meineke, diagnosis for free and made a simple adjustment to another issue mentioned for the other $1500 estimate at no charge. They may do fine work but this approach did not work for me and would not accept there full report as only looking to do more than necessary for someone from out of town not addressing what was need to get me back on the road trying to get more money than necessary. Unfortunate as did not meet my exceptions and believe they rather replaced parts than figure out if really necessary. read more
