Water heater wasn't creating much hot water. American Weathermakers had replaced my air conditioner in the summer so we called them. Service tech opened a faucet and took temperature and declared it's either a dip tube ($450) or we need a new $1,400 water heater (unit is only 6 years old). Called the manufacturer of the unit and they walked me through the error codes on the gas control valve and determined it was the temperature sensor. Purchased gas control valve on AMZ for $100 and installed and now have immediate and ample hot water. Disappointing that American Weathermakers didn't even look at the gas control valve that clearly indicated there was a problem with the temperature sensor. read more

So disappointed. Like Jerry S., it took a long time and over a dozen service calls to get our situation fixed, only to find out a year later that there were further issues. Nothing worse than being pregnant during a heatwave in Chicago and not having air conditioning. Except for being treated like crap from a company that you end up spending almost five grand with. The service technicians were all polite and on-time, so they do deserve the minimum one star but that's where the niceties end from me. I'm not sure if they're lower level employees are untrained or just completely inept, but the first few technicians misdiagnosed the issue. Finally one determined that it was a coil that needed to get replaced. The coil cost almost two thousand dollars and the tech that came to install it literally gave up during the installation process. He left our basement in disarray and smelling like burnt hair from trying to solder the coil. So we went from having minimal A/C to no A/C and were told that they needed another part and would not be back for five days. When I called them back to let them know this was unacceptable, I was treated very rudely by the appointment scheduler who had a "what do you want me to do about it" attitude. When they did return, they were able to replace the coil, but still the temperature in our townhouse did not drop. I called them to return and they sent out several additional technicians over the course of a few weeks and were still unable to diagnose the issue. Finally they sent a senior technician over. He was like the Mr. Wolf of air conditioning and knew what the problem was as he walked up to our front door. The actual unit was leaking. He opened the unit and showed me where the leak was happening. So now, we needed to spend another $2,500 to get the unit replaced and a new thermostat. Finally we were back in business. Or so we thought. Temperature still was not dropping. As it turned out they didn't install the thermostat correctly. Seriously? I can install a thermostat. Why can't a professional do it? this company is unbelievable read more

It took a long time - more than two years - several service calls and a fair amount of money, , but my A/C unit is now working fine. We recently had several days in the 90s and high 80s and it was very comfortable in our unit. My earlier comments are as true today as they were when I wrote them. But getting different service personnel involved made all the difference. Steve, whose note appears below, was professional in his dealings. The technician, Frank, who we were worked with the most was knowledgeable and, more importantly, dogged in working with us to resolve the issue. It took several calls, but the causes for our complaints were found and corrected. As noted, we've used American Weathermakers for a decade or so and never had a significant problem until this situation - which was major and took two years to resolve. But, with a different service manager and technician, it was ultimately resolved and I am satisfied. They lived up to their promise of customer satisfaction. Jerry = = = = = I'm drafting a letter right now informing these folks that we're headed for court after their Service Manager hung up on me. Seems he didn't like my questions about his telling me that we shouldn't set the thermostat lower than 70 with the over-sized $5,000 air conditioning unit they installed last year. Apparently my asking for documentation to that effect irritated him as did my questioning about whether or not his installers would have checked for proper airflow when the unit was put in. (He told me no: they were there to just install the unit.) We've actually used these folks for 10 or more years and never had a problem. We were on a contract most of that time for annual inspections and had a few service calls on a decades old unit. The new unit, supposedly with greater capacity, simply hasn't worked well. We had doubts earlier this summer, thinking an exceptionally hot spell may have just been too much. But it's 60 degrees outside right now - and 78 inside. The unit has not been working right all week. Their Service Manager offered to come out for a free "pre" service call assessment, but when I started asking questions about his statements, such as the unit not being able to deal with thermostat set temperatures of less than 70, he got nasty and finally hung up. Their corporate President is, unsurprisingly, unreachable. Instead they tell me to go back to the guy who hung up on me and has left me in the lurch for service. These people are bad news when it comes to supporting the equipment they sell. I would not recommend them. N.B: The person who hung up on me just called and said they were sending a serviceman this evening. We'll see what the outcome is. As it stands, I am not a happy camper with regard to this company and am quite disturbed by statements that the $5,000 air conditioning unit will likely fail if the thermostat is set to lower than 70 degrees and that the installers checked only the unit itself for proper operation. It's a long story, but here it is in broad strokes. I had been using American Weathermakers since 2010 when I first got my 2 flat building and was satisfied with their service. However, in 2018, I called them because my air handler for my A/C was leaking water from the bottom. AM suggested the drain line was clogged charged me $278 to blow the line out. That didn't solved the problem so I called them back a couple days later to let them know, and they suggested I have the drain line rebuilt because (according to them) it wasn't pitched properly. I declined, cuz it worked fine for the first 8 years I lived here, and the issue clearly wasn't the pitch of the drain line. Unit continued to leak until 2020, when I decided to call another company, about the issue. It took the other company 5 minutes to diagnose it as needing an R-22 freon recharge. I looked back on the AM invoice from 2018, and they checked the freon and wrote down the pressure and I had it confirmed by the other company that the pressure was INDEED LOW back in 2018 based on what AM wrote!! Draw your own conclusions. So, I had to pay for a repair I didn't need, and a service call from another company and for a freon recharge from yet a 3rd company. Now the unit is working fine with no leaks. UGH. Will never use American Weathermakers again. Oh, and when I wanted to discuss the matter with them, I was ignored for weeks and had to keep hounding them, and their customer service manager was arrogant, argumentative and in denial mode, and offered me a paltry settlement compared to what I'm out due to their misdiagnosis of a simple problem. read more

So again with the moving and everything going wrong at the last minute... So it's 11pm and the power goes out (not a usual thing without a storm) and I didn't think anything of it...until the next, hot, blistering, mid-July, only-2-days-to-have-a-house-clearing-moving-sale, day...when I realize the more I crank my AC up, the more nothing happens. Low and behold...someone stole the condenser!! YES. That's a thing. They backed up in a truck...cut the power (ohhhh that's what that was!) and lifted my whole AC unit off into the netherlands of scrap-parting or whatever the heck you do w/ a huge box of metal. What to do? Call American Weathermakers. They were super understanding and friendly and had someone out the next day to give me an estimate. For insurance purposes I had to get 2 quotes and they came in well below the competition. Not too long after I was back to sweater-weather in July in my apt. Just in time to move out and leave the cool to the next owners. Regardless, everyone was really friendly and they even offered to bolt down the unit for me at no additional charge! We had been using American Weathermakers for a couple years prior to this incident and had no extremely horrible issues. We liked some technicians more than others, of course. Their quotes were normally a bit higher than their competitors. That happens.... This past summer 2018 we had an extreme flood in Vernon Hills and our sump pump went out. Unfortunately, i was out of town when this happened and my wife had to deal with the water in our house, the mitigation process, and replacing the sump pump. American Weathermakers took advantage of the emergency situation AND my wife and i by charging us $1400 for a new sump pump and installation. That's right $1400! They took advantage and completely ripped us off. When i returned home, i called to see if they made a mistake and overcharged me accidentally but to my surprise they didn't. They wholeheartedly ripped us off and took advantage. I will NEVER use them again. read more

We bought a new house with home warranty. Before moving in, we found a water puddle by the furnace. Called American Weathermakers and the technical recommended replacing the evaporator coil, which is about $1500. Realizing this is something that should be covered by home warranty, I filed the claim online and the instruction was having the service provider contact the home warranty about the diagnosis and cost. This is simple enough. However, American Weathermakers refused to call the home warranty company without giving any legitimate reasons. I made a trip out to Northbrook to help my elderly great aunt take care of her central AC repair. She picked these guys because they quoted her a cheaper price than all their competitors. They tried to upsell the repair and give her more stuff than she needed for just herself, but that's why I was there to kindly say no and let them do the work they were there for. I check in on her occasionally and she has no problems whatsoever with her system. It gives both of us peace of mind to know that she'll be comfortable this summer. I'm actually thinking about upgrading from my current situation (window units scattered across the house), and if I go through with it, these guys will be short list. read more

My tenant called last night at 2 am, it's cold (like 7 degrees), the furnace is out, his kids are crying, his wife is threatening divorce and the dog is going to bite him and it's all my fault. Bottom line get it fixed now or they are going to a hotel and want me to pay for it. So a frantic call to American Weathermakers (these guys should wear capes) and a tech is at my rental property in an hour, and has things going shortly there after. I am mystified by the negative reviews. Our furnace was destroyed when our sewers backed up in a recent storm, and they sent someout the next day and we ordered a furnace. A week later the installer (José) was great. He had the patience of Job, and did a fabulous job with everything and was courteous and friendly even when approaching during the ninth hour of the install. He even discovered that our other furnace was improperly wired and the fan speed was too high for the A/C, so the air didn't have time to properly cool when passing over the condenser. Now everything works so much better than before. We are still waiting for the chimney cap (they brought the wrong size) but hopefully they will follow through with that. UPDATE: Without being reminded, they called me, scheduled the cap install and completed the job. It has been warm, and the A/C is so much colder thanks to José. Based on my experience, would definitely recommend them. read more

I see that there are mixed Yelp reviews, but we have used this company for over 20 years and have generally been very pleased with their service. I recently called American Weathermakers at noon on a Friday because we had no hot water. I was sure I would have to wait until Monday for a service call, but a serviceman was dispatched to my house within three hours and fixed the problem. Similarly, it took us a great deal of time to decide that our furnaces actually did need to be replaced. As part of our decision-making process, one of the company executives came to our house at no charge and answered the many questions we had about the safety of heat exchangers in furnaces installed in 2000. I thought that this was a case of going above and beyond for a longtime customer. read more

When I called American Weathermakers, I asked if they have cameras that could look through my vents because no air was coming out. The repairman came with no camera and asked me for a piece of cardboard and tape and put it over a vent in my furnace room. He said that was the problem and charged me over the initial quote. Of course, there was still no air coming out. I called again and said I needed the camera that snakes through the vents. The next person who came only had his cell phone camera. This place is a joke and they refused to credit my money. I finally got the problem fixed by a reputable company who had the correct equipment. I have had American Weathermakers service our air conditioner and furnace for years. I am part of their "club" where they do two service calls a year - spring and fall. Since I have had them as my service provider, I have never had a problem. If I did, I know that I am on the "first list" of customers to serve. I would also give this company ZERO stars What a joke!! I just wish I could go on to WGN radio, where they advertise and tell them about my experience.I'm just sorry I joined their Comfort Club before checking out their work. I must say, the first guy they sent out to just do a "Winter Check-up" was very good. He said that I did need a new Humidifier, and that's when all the problem started. A new set of "technicians" came out a few days later to install the Humidifier. They spent a good three hours installing the unit. Then as they were pulling out of my driveway I thought I better check my thermostat as they said they had to turn it off when doing the install. The thermostat was blank so I ran out of the house and flagged their truck down. They came back in and spent another hour by my furnace, telling me they had blown a fuse and that is why the thermostat wasn't working (Duhhh). So they replaced the fuse and left, failing to reset the programming I had originally on the "smart" thermostat. Next morning we had NO hot water and the house was freezing due to the fact that they failed to both re- program the thermostat or inform me that the unit needed to be reprogrammed. Worse yet, we had to shower in cold water because for some unknown reason they had turned off the water heater and forgot to turn it back on! I was really pissed with the service and ineptitude of their service people so I called the company and asked to speak with the owner. The receptionist asked me what the call was about and I asked her if she was the owner, she said no. I said again that I wished to speak to the owner. She put me on hold for about three to five minutes when a service manager came on the line. I again asked if he was the owner and I was told the owner was too busy to talk right now. "Too busy" to talk to a customer?? How the hell do these guys stay in business if they can't even talk to one of their customers? Anyway I did rant to him and told him about my experience with American Weathermakers and he apologized and offered no excuses or solutions or even "what can we do to make you happy?" sort of comment. But wait! It gets even worse! Two days later I went down to our basement and was met with a flood, water running out of our laundry room into our finished basement! The damn pipes they installed running from the water heater to the humidifier sprung a huge spraying leak showering our basement with water throughout the night! I was furious! I immediately called AW and told them to get someone out to my house immediately. Guess what she said? "We'll get someone there as soon as possible." Really? ASAP? How about "we'll have someone there right away?" In their defense, a new technician did show up within about 30 minutes and he was excellent in the work he performed. I am sure had they sent him out originally we wouldn't have had all of these issues. Since all of this happened I filed a complaint with my credit card company, refusing to pay for the service call and the equipment with the hope that the owner will call me and I can give him a piece of my mind. Do not for one minute think this "family owned" business will act ;ike your personl good neighbor. Far from it. They may be family owned but they run their business like some huge corporation that cares little if nothing about you, the customer. read more

Well they made it back out (eventually) but I also called a bunch of other places in the meantime. Their technician said there could be a leak and that it would cost ~$300 to check and if they found the leak (in the coils where it was most likely to be) it would be about $1300 more to fix. I told them to forget it- I knew there was a leak (DUH!) and didn't need to give them another $300 for them to tell me that. I mean they could have at least offered the test free seeing as they effed up last time and already had my money. So now we are looking to replace the system because it is so old and uses the old and terrible freon. We got a quote from American Weathermakers, but even though the price looks OK, I just can't trust that they will do a good job based on how they handled this and the "knowledge" of their technicians. I'm sticking with AVOID on this one. read more

Total rip off. They were polite on the telephone and a technian came out on time (which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1). They charged a couple of hundred bucks for a basic scheduled visit (which is way too much, I later found out). My A/C was shutting off at 78 degrees before it reached preset temp of 72 degrees. Frank said the problem was the thermostat. I asked him if changing the thermostat would resolve the problem of the A/C shutting down prematurely, he said, yes. The thermostat was their brand, and I paid $256. Nothing changed. Same temperature readings. A/C still shut down at 78 degrees before reaching 72 that Frank himself set it for. After the installation and I reported no change, instead of saying he was guessing, he became very defensive and said that I told him that the fan, also, not just the A/C, had shut down before reaching 72 degrees. Makes no sense. So, either he's lying or he really believes the fan had something to do with his recommendation to change the thermostat. So, he didn't make sense. In the meantime, I told him not to order the compressor, he recommended to replace, so, I could have more time to decide when to replace and by whom (cost: $2,500 work order he had e-mailed). At that point, Frank turned around and charged an additional $100 for the thermostat making it $356, (lifetime warranty that expires if I sell my place) and added an additional $241 for his time (2 hours total). It was my decision to replace the thermostat, but, that was based on his definitive "yes" that this would resolve the problem, which it did not. Since his office approved the additional $341, I would not recommend this business, as a whole, either. read more

So my husband joined the "Comfort Club" the last couple of years. The idea is that if you pay up front, the services for the year are covered. Guess what? We joined in the spring, after our spring check-up. IT WAS A CALENDAR YEAR. We essentially paid double for fall only. It was only AFTER the spring visit was concluded (and the bill presented) that they told us it wasn't covered, even though they called and made the appointment by referencing "Comfort Club." PLEASE be careful if you choose these guys. They already cost an arm and a leg, so I strongly recommend you avoid the whole "Comfort Club" thing like the plague. read more

They provided same day, emergency service (my garage / shop heater stopped working on one of the coldest day's of the year) and without any crazy up charge. In my experience that's almost unheard of! When he arrived, Jayson was friendly, knowledgeable and well prepared. His work flow was very logical and efficient, being an engineer that really impressed me. I would give zero stars if I could. Called for air conditioner. Mine broke and I didn't have time to go get the part and repair it. The guy showed up, opened the unit and said it needed a new contact block. He said with labor and the part, it would be 284.00. I said that their radio ad says if they aren't there in an hour you get 60.00 off. When I told him it had been 5 hours since we called, he said he would ask the office. 20 minutes later he knocks on the door and says he's done. Then he says the bill is 340.00 and subtracts 60.00. I called their office and they said the part was 240.00!!!! I called Rheem and got the price of the part. 12.95!! They are liars and criminals. read more
