The open at 11am on Saturdays and we got there right at 11am, the staff was getting everything ready and setting up the tables. I was craving sushi badly and I looked up sushi restaurants in El Cajon on Yelp and I went with the restaurant with most stars plus it was close to where I was shopping. I don't live in El Cajon, so I had to trust the review on Yelp. I felt good vibes as soon as ai walked in. The host/server was polite and welcoming. They play relaxing yet upbeat music in the background. I normally order an assortment nigiri, but thought, "What the heck, let's try something different, but with salmon." So I ordered the tiger role and sweet potato tempura. It was perfect. It hit the spot! I will have to come back and try their nigiri. I might add, the rice portion to the tiger role was perfect. If you're in East County and looking for a no-frills sushi spot, Ami's it. Ami has been a staple go-to for those not trying to risk it at newer spots. This spot has definitely remained consistent with quality, presentation, and prices. It's also my go to spot for Vegas Rolls that don't cost an arm and a leg. Ami is a more homey spot, with minimal fight for seating. While it's a bit outdated on the inside, their sushi remains progressively good and decent. Be sure to check their specials on the board by their window. They change often and is usually offer some great entrees. We ordered a Vegas Roll, Fried Gyoza, Egg Rolls, and the Chicken Teriyaki special that came with Cali maki. It was cheaper than the menu price and looked exactly like what I'd receive. The Vegas Roll is my absolute favorite and it stays amazing. It hit the spot and cured my craving. Not too much eel sauce or spicy Mayo, so I was about it. They provided a decent amount of wasabi and ginger for those who mix wasabi with soy sauce. Gyoza and Egg Rolls were cooked perfectly and filled with meaty fillings. I loved it. I would've ordered mores fried gyoza if we hadn't ordered everything else. The chicken teriyaki special was super good. We really enjoyed the teriyaki sauce, zucchini, broccoli, and cauliflower. I placed an order online and went to the restaurant to pick it up. I told a guy working there that I was there to pick up an order and they said they didn't have it. So there was a back and forth as to to where the order was and apparently they had computer problems. I understand the restaurant was a little busy but felt like they were not prioritizing the fact that the error was on their part and that they should correct it right away. The guy who look like someone in charge asked me what my order was multiple times. He didn't even look on his computer. I waited about an hour before I got my order. They didn't even apologize at any point for the error nor did they offer to comp soup or something while I waited. Finally after I got my order, which they just handed to me again with no apologies, I get home and the food is horrible. I waited an hour probably an hour and a half total after ordering initially to get very mediocre food. Very disappointing. I'm never ordering from this place again. Customer service goes a long way. We used to come here for Happy Hour when we lived in SD. This was our go-to sushi joint. Decided that we wanted sushi for dinner during our little weekend getaway. Drove 20 min to get there from the hotel, but was worth it. Didn't disappoint. Ordered a Lemon roll. The ponzu sauce was on the side. Be careful putting it on cause it can be overwhelming. For those of you who might be hesitant about the lemon flavor being too much, it isn't. It's a thin sliver so the lemon doesn't overwhelm the rest of the roll. The Caterpillar roll had the eel sauce on the side. I put that over the whole roll cause I like eel sauce. It was a perfect amount. As for the spicy tuna hand roll, they did not skimp on the spicy tuna. By the way, the salmon skin roll is good too. I used to order that back in the day. Every bite of each roll was flavorful. HOW is this place still open? I have had better 7-eleven sushi! We have tried this place more than once because we really wanted to like it, as it is within walking distance of our house. But it is just not good no matter how much we wish it was. Everyone we have asked about this place says it is bad so I don't really understand why there are people there when we have gone in. The salad tasted spoiled. Tried two rolls; Vegas and dynamite roll. They were the stars of the order. Got it through door dash and waited over an hour; first dasher showed and then left 5 minutes after waiting for my food that was still being made way too long after it should have been ready. 2nd dasher was quick and efficient. Overall, this place didn't impress me in a time that they should be taking that extra care and competition is stiff.
