My gf lives around the area and introduced me to this place. It's ok. Not the best. But I like the very causal approach. You come in, and pick your own seat. HH is not bad, and they have Hana Sake (one of my fave) on special. Their large sake is more than plenty for more than two people. My BF and I ordered it and we couldn't finish it. I mean we got pretty tipsy lol! Service is great in a way that the girls are all pretty sweet, but orders get forgotten or they don't come in order. I've had my app come after we've eaten all the sushi. Everything I have have been pretty decent. But not something to write mom home about. The sashimi salad tho is what keeps me coming back. This place is way over priced for their specialty rolls. $12.95 for a caterpillar roll is just wrong. Over priced by like $4.00. Even their regular rolls are at least $1.00 over priced. Just because you offer a hot combo that comes with sushi it doesn't mean you should package those two together. The sushi wasn't even room temp, it was almost hot. I understand delivery sushi can be questionable but we've ordered plenty from other places and this was the worst. Had to spit out the salmon bite from my sashimi salad as it tasted rancid. Very rude customer service. Ordered through DoorDash and asked for a side of spicy mayo. DoorDash driver was very nice but the representative at the store said he needed to pay $2 to receive one spicy mayo. That's ridiculous considering that I have ate there before and they do not charge for a side of spicy mayo. On top of it the person at the story was very rude which is uncalled for. Every year I come to San Diego with my hubby for Comic Con and to visit friends and family. Last year, the friend who we stay with introduced us to this place and I was eager to return. One thing I'd like to start with is that in Reno, we have a lot of AYCE sushi joints. San Diego, while being close to the ocean, does not. Go figure. I'm used to a whole lot of smaller rolls from the AYCE places, so I made the mistake last year of over-ordering food because I was expecting a lot less. The portion sizes, for me at least, are HUGE! I'm glad we were sharing because I don't think I could eat them all by myself. I'm going to be honest. What initially drew me to this place was the lure of sweet shrimp (amaebi). Many, many years ago I was able to find it in Reno, but the restaurants have since discontinued it. At least, I haven't found one that still has any. Also, it was always tiny, like baby shrimp. At Ami Sushi, they serve two massive sweet shrimp nigiri alongside their deep-fried shells. I can't really eat the shell too easily, but once I pull the eyes off the heads, I am more than happy to scarf them down. Though we've tried a few different rolls before, the ones we chose this time were the Monkey Roll (which was sweet and savory thanks to the tempura banana in it), the Sweet Hawaiian (which didn't really strike me as Hawaiian in any way. I expected something tropical, like pineapple, but no, just tempura shrimp and some other normal stuff), the Sunrise Roll (which had lemon and jalapeño along with the fish. It was pleasantly tangy and refreshing on that hot afternoon), and a Futo maki (a nice, sweet roll that uses the often forgotten tamago). On the side, we also got a mixed sashimi platter which came with a delicious little salad with a light vinaigrette dressing, rice, and another little sprout salad of some sort. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a condiment or what, but I ate it straight and it was tasty. It also came with some miso soup but it wasn't very good. If it hadn't been included, I wouldn't have paid for one, and I love miso soup. We also got the takoyaki appetizer. I had intended to take a picture of them but we love them so much, we started eating them, piping hot, right as soon as they were brought to the table without even thinking. If you've never experienced one of these tasty gems, imagine a hush puppy stuffed with octopus and drizzled with eel sauce and spicy mayo. We asked that they leave off the bonito flakes because it's too fishy tasting for my hubby. There is a place in Reno that does these, too, and I could seriously eat dozens of them. For all that food for three people, plus a large sake, the bill came up to around $90, which we split. So, not exactly the cheapest lunch but hey, when on vacation it's okay to splurge, right? read more

This cute little restaurant is found inside a little shopping center. Came here for a quick lunch since I've been craving sushi. They have a good selection of different sushi rolls, sashimi, salads and many other appetizers. The hostess and server were kind, other than that nothing noticeable. The only thing that was annoying were the rolls themselves. You couldn't pick them up without it falling apart as you took it of the plate; this was with those wrapped in seaweed and those wrapped in soy paper. MY FOOD POISONING STORY FROM AMI SUSHI!! I went to Ami sushi around 6pm on Saturday, it was the only meal I had that day, besides some toast in the morning. After eating the sushi I didn't feel that good but I do have a sensitive stomach so I brushed it off, I took nausea medicine and went to bed around 10:00pm. I woke up at 2:00AM and started getting sick, I was sick for two days... it was horrible. I GOT FOOD POISONING. I finally started to feel better on the 3rd day and decided to call them to let them know. The host answered and said the manager wasn't in so she'd get my info down and have him call me right away. I never received a call that day or the next day... I had to call back a few days after and the host said the manager wasn't in AGAIN. I told her that a manager or supervisor should be in at all times to deal with issues like this. Coincidentally he walked in right after I said that. I got on the phone with him and told him what happened and all he said was that I can come in to get my money back.... I was so mad at this point but I wanted to talk to him face to face. I was hoping I'd possibly get an apology when I came in but no. I came in and the host went to talk to him by the sushi bar and he walked to the back!? So I told the host what I wanted to say to him. I also told her that she shouldn't have to deal with this and I know it's not her fault. The hostess was so sweet and I really appreciated her concern. Moral of the story is Ami Sushi sucks. Myself and a coworker came in later afternoon the the place was pretty crowded. Lots of dealership guys from across the street were here. That tells ya that the foods good if they keep coming back. Used to be higher on my radar but that past few times I have gone, their fish has been anything but fresh. The restaurant being dead every time we walk in, they are not too speedy with service, the workers look like they don't even want to be there, and the fish looks questionable. I've been going here for probably about 3-4 years, of course occasionally because I do believe there are better sushi places, but I thought it was great for being local. Oh boy has it gone down hill though. I've been twice in the past 4 months about, and both times I ordered similar things with salmon in them. Both times the salmon looked drowned-out in color, a slimier texture than normal, and not firm. Meaning, the fish itself looked like it was squishing and almost dissolving into the roll with the touch of my chopstick. The first time I noticed, I didn't think much, just avoided the questionable pieces, but the second time... made me decide I will never be eating here again. No other than the fact that I don't think they prepare their fish correctly anymore. My bf and I have been sick with what we believe to be salmonella (with some research) for the past 4 days and I wasn't even going to write a review. But knowing there were other people in the building and multiple to-go's coming in and out, I can only imagine who else might be dealing with this. If you're a sushi chef, you should know exactly what good fish looks and feels like, and that sushi chef should have known better.
